I hate to have just found this place now that we're moving. They keep the restaurant section open until after 11pm and the lounge/bar until 1:30am, but sometimes you have to deal with terrible drunk white guys singing karaoke in the lounge. For $12.05 we got an entire large meal and split it (#13 combo), complete with pork spare rib slices, pork fried rice, the best general tso's chicken I've had in quite some time (garlic-based, not spicy!), six small cups of hot tea, 'egg flower soup' which was basically chicken noodle soup without the noodles, with egg drop added, and orange sherbet for dessert. I'm only offering it 4 stars instead of 5 because I know their meat quality could be better, but overall it was a great late night meal and I'll probably be back in the next couple days, especially when two of us got out of there full for $15 with tip. I'd kill for this place to deliver.

They have such good food here, when my sister comes to visit this is the first place she wants to go out to eat at. I hace a realitive sho has a heart problem and has to be on a low sodium diet. All you have to do is let the server know and they will cook your food with no sodium or MSG. Of course there is some exceptions like the fired shrimp - due to the batter that the use.

The fried shirimp is great just let your server know that you want them extra crispy that that is how you will get them.

The staff is wondeful, the food delicious, and lots of parking. Canton Grill gets 5 *****'s. :)

Canton has just gone down hill. Obvious low quality meats is the biggest bummer. Used to love the place and still think they have the best Pork Fried Rice and Crab Puffs. Any more, it is a guerentee that you will get a nasty piece of chicken, and BBQ pork highly laced with fat. everything else is ok but nothing any better then other places.

Upon walking in, the place leads me to expect to see regular, old fashioned alcoholics sitting at the bar drinking and smoking. The place is old and it smells that way. While the food was inexpensive, they didn't have much in the way of selection and it was all greasy! It left a sick feeling in my stomach.

The Canton Grill is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Portland. I love their Canton Special chow mein, fried rice and the egg rolls are the BEST! The atmosphere isn't ever what I've gone for, it's definitely family friendly but a little dark inside and if you don't like Karaoke, go for lunch instead of dinner. The food though, wow!

How could anyone recommend this place?
The egg roll wrap was raw on the inside and very greasy .
The shrimp fried rice had only a small amount of shrimp.
The chicken egg foo young was strange tasting, like they had added a bunch of flour to it.
They can't even get the condiments right. I asked for duck sauce and got catsup!. When I called them on it they told me that was their homemade duck sauce. This is a first...a chinese restaurant that serves catsup as duck sauce.
Horrible, just horrible!

This restaurant was my grandfather's favorite when he was a child, my father's favorite when he was a child, and has now been mine for the past 20+ years. My wife is pregnant and we are sure that our fourth generation will experience this incredible restaurant for years to come...if my wife doesn't eat them out of business in the next 8 months :). Great comfort food, fun Friday night outings, open late for the 'post-bar' stop. Only downfall is the part of town...it has become pretty sketchy... but it isn't the restaurants fault and you can't really expect them to move after 60+ years. Don't forget to rub Buddah's belly on the way out!

This restaurant has been around for years, and I know why. They have wonderful food, and they can make virtually anything with no msg or salt. I have a fairly large family, and they had no problem seating us in a minimal amount of time. I think my favorite thing on the menu is the curry rolls and general tso's chicken, I recommend trying them if you ever decide to visit.

To be perfectly fair, Canton Grill serves the best (IMHO) *American-Style* Chinese food. It's some of my Comfort Food.

Their most popular dishes don't come from Szechuan, Hunan, or any of the regions of the China we have since learned about. So what? This is history, kids! This was the only "Chinese" food you could get back when "Father Knows Best" episodes were new. This was exotic to a lot of our American parents and grandparents. I speak to those of us who can remember when Going Out To Dinner was a major family event. Our parents had to Save Up to take us out. This food takes us back to a time when we couldn't get a bowl of pho to save our Euro-Ameri-centric lives and none of us had even heard of sushi.

In the entry way, they have posted menus dating back to the 1940s. The prices have changed, but you can still taste what our families saved to enjoy. The service is just as friendly and loving as ever, at least.

There are some "real" Chinese dishes on the menu, but it's that celery-and-bean-sprouts Pork Chow Mein (with the crunchy noodles underneath) that makes "Mister" and me choose Canton Grill when we feel like treating ourselves to some memories and satisfying our cravings.

My father took me there when I was probably four or five years old. There, I learned how to use chopsticks! In my little world, the Number 3 combination (Fried Shrimp, Pork Chow Mein--see above--and Pork Fried Rice) WAS Chinese food. That was all Chinese children ever ate, in my mind. Imagine my delight when we tried the Fried Won Ton for the first time...

That's what Comfort Food's all about: the quality of the memories and the efforts to reexperience them. That's what's so precious about the Canton Grill. Oh, and Number 3 combination is still there, and still called "Number 3." How cool is that?

First, unlike a lot of other restaurants, Canton Grill recognizes those over 55 as being eligible for a "senior" discount (I'm 56). The service is friendly and fast and the food reminds me of what seems like days gone by ... when Chinese food tasted like the Chinese food I remember ... not corrupted by definitions or expectations of effete snobs who may "specialize" in a given cuisine (but not on MY taste buds).

One note. The hours of operation shown are incorrect. They open at 11AM promptly every day.

When I get sick of all of the crappy fast food I eat this is my favorite alternative. Give me an order of fried rice and and fried shrimp with some hot yellow mustard and I am set! Great late night, just call ahead and pick it up 15 mins. later.

I have been going there for years. The food is great, a few dishes lack the authentic taste, but who cares about a few dishes? Do not even look at the American Menu, these people are authentic Chinese trying to cater to us, they don't do American food well. The service is usually good, however they do replace Waitress#1 quite often (I believe this position is the only one filled by non family/ someone who hasnt been there the last 5-15 years) and Waitress one causes the service to lack greatly. However, you can meet the owner any night of the week, friendly serivce, good food.

I would recommend not going too late at night, they offer karaoke in the bar, and unless you want to join he tone deaf locals - its a little difficult to attempt to tune them out during an otherwise enjoyable experience.

But everything else was less than mediocre.
The Chicken Subgum Chow Mein was too much onion, not enough celery.
The Pork Fried Rice had no pork, it was dry, and a funny dark brown color as if it had cooked too long.
The Sweet & Sour sauce was good, but the fried shrimp we ordered it for were small, soggy chunks.
The BBQ Pork was dry and over-cooked.

The Egg Flower soup is AMAZING though. The best I've ever had.

I visited the Canton Grill years ago before I discovered the out of this world Chinese at Wong's Garden on Woodstock. The food was nasty then and it's still nasty. I thought maybe over the past 14 years it could have changed..... not even! YUCK!

First off the service was good. The staff was friendly and we were promptly seated. Karaoke in the background was amusing. *sigh* But the food. The pork chow mein had little to do with pork or pan fried noodles (google image "Chow mein" and see what it's supposed to be Portland, for you have been lied to!), and more to do with celery and onion chunks piled high. A mound if you will. And the pork spare ribs.. should have been more appropriately named, "Pork Spare Marrow." A bowl of bones is unappetising to say the least. In fact, we had to use our soy sauce saucer as a designated bone recepticle with little "meat" left behind. Heed this warning: Avoid at all costs. Unless you like smokey Karaoke. In which case, drink but eat before you go.

Canton Grill, on 82nd and SE Division is that little Chinese Food place that always delivers a quality meal for a competitive price. They have the very best Pork Fried Rice and BBQ Pork in town and I personally love their Sweet & Sour Spare Ribs.
They have a smoky bar as well that has pretty good Karaoke nightly, although to be honest, I haven't been there to sing in a few years.
Well worth the trip.
Our family has gone their my entire life... so that's over 35 years.

With the sounds of karaoke wafting in from the bar, eating sweet-n-sour chicken was never so fun. In addition to full-sized dinners, they have a "Mini-Combo" menu where you can pick different items, from egg rolls to sesame chicken, making your perfect combination when the appetite isn't as large. The staff is also pretty friendly.

PROS: price, EXCELLENT sesame chicken, small portions option
CONS: The singing can sometimes be so bad!
