I have not stayed in downtown Portland before, but was looking for somewhere to stay for my honeymoon. Ended up getting a great deal on one of those discount sites and then when we showed up after our wedding ceremony and reception, all dolled up of course, they upgraded our room to a suite. A very pleasurable stay even if we were only there for one night. They also have bikes to check out but I think they only have two. I liked the fact you could bring your pet. Hung out in the morning in the sitting area with our coffee. Loved the fish in our room. Bedding was great and it was quiet, no street noise. Great animal print robes, fabulous giant bathroom. Service was great and they quickly brought us some forks to eat our wedding leftovers and they had already displayed the bottle of champagne that my new inlaws had gifted us. Overall great stay, no complaints. I would definitely stay there again.

I've stayed at 5 star hotels all over the world and my experience at Hotel Monaco was phenomenal. Never have I had such a pleasant stay. Monaco is very pet friendly and does not charge any fees for pets, so hard to come by. All the staff were so sincere and genuine I truly felt that they wanted to be there. Not to mention helpful and easy to talk to. The atmosphere in this hotel is upscale but very comfortable. I felt like I was visiting a friends chateau. Extra Impressive reception! Quick, pleasant check as well as a smile every time I left or entered. Hotel Monaco can be assured of my business for many years to come. Keep up the AMAZING work!

My husband and I stayed here for the 2nd time last weekend. We ordered the "romance" package and it was worth it. Sparkling wine, rose petals, late check out, breakfast "in bed," free valet parking. We had the larger King Size Suite which was perfect. Prior, we have stayed in a Grand Suite which is very special - just right for a wedding night!

Unfortunately, this stay, the neighbors next door were very loud (sounded like young women partying - this is 1:30 am). We called the front desk and they really didn't do much except try to reach them by phone - and they wouldn't answer. Oh, well.

But, we were still able to lounge in bed until 1 pm which was a special treat. This is a great hotel and we'll be back.

We love staying at the Monaco. I think that maybe our dogs enjoy staying here even more than we do. Everything the staff here does makes you feel welcome. I love Kimpton hotels allowing pets, offering the beverage/wine hour, and offering a great hotel experience.

Just another chain hotel trying to differentiate itself. Cocktail hour is a nice touch though and we got better advice about where to go and what to do by networking the other guests than through the concierge. It's a good step up from a Hilton though.

We took our kids one long weekend for a drive to Oregon and ended up in Portland. We were undecided on what hotel to stay at and didn't want to go to a regular Best Western or Hilton hotel. So my husband went online to hotwire.com and typed in 4stars and up for a hotel and found Hotel Monaco.

I was so impressed with the size of our room. We thought we were only going to get a typical hotel room with 2 queen beds. But the rooms were set up with a separate living area, more like a suite. And the sofa in the living area had a pull out bed. There was a french looking sliding door to the bedroom. This room was so impressive and the view of the city was remarkable.

PROS: Nice hotel with lots of nice features
CONS: It can be pricey - without a deal from hotwire

I was bowled over by the service and the lovely appearance of their lobby and guest rooms. Highly recommended for everyone! They even gave my kid a goldfish in a bowl for the two nights we were at the hotel! (The goldfish's name was Gary - how cute!) Art the Lobby Dog is adorable and clearly loved and well-cared for by the staff. The restaurant Red Club has just been renovated and the food we had for breakfast was great. The location is also very handy for local restaurants and shopping. One front desk clerk gave us amazing lunch and dinner recommendations and seemed to know the city very well indeed! We very much appreciated the personal attention and will definitely be back next time we are in Portland!

Okay, let me be fair. Their front desk, room service, and valet was exceptional, and we really received out-of-this-world service. Honestly, some of the best service I've ever had at hotel. The one-star rating is because housekeeping lost my wedding dress for a period of time, and then it was returned to me stained.

Coming from out of town, my wedding dress had been carried on the plane, and I needed it steamed the night before my wedding. No big deal, right? I had them pick it up around 3, and when I returned from the rehearsal dinner at 9, it wasn't back in my room yet. Long story short, it had been placed in another bride's room, and it took them over an hour to locate it. The next day, when I put it on, there was a black ink stain on the upper left part of the dress (right over my chest) that became apparent to everyone. It was the size of a pen mark. It wasn't huge, but because my dress was satin, it was noticeable on the texture. Because of the timing, there was nothing we could do, and I had to move on with my day.

I did let the hotel know after the fact, and they gave us a coupon for a one-night stay, which corresponded to the excellent customer service I had received during my stay there.

I have since had me dress cleaned by a nationally recognized dress preservation company, and the stain didn't budge, which stinks.

Moral of the story...don't let them touch your clothes, but still a great place to stay.

I come here every so often, when I need to get away from the usual scene and feel pampered. The staff is courteous and attentive to your needs. The renovation is fabulous and the service continues to climb higher and higher in excellence. The location is perfectly situated for downtown activties and events. Highly recommended for in-laws who are visiting, romantic evenings and bachelorettes. All fit this unique hotel!

What a great experience! The service was ridiculously good. I've never met a friendlier staff and felt more at home in any other hotel. This boutique style hotel is beautiful! The decoration from lobby to room was like stepping into a Interior Design catalog...I walked through the hotel eyeing every corner for decor ideas! From the front desk to the valet guys down below, everyone went out of their way to chat with us, offer directions or places to see, and were just generally nice. Coming from Los Angeles, this felt like another planet! Great place to stay, especially for the money. A hotel like this should cost $300-$400 in any other big city! I highly recommend!

In portland last week and stayed at the hotel. While it is slightly off the Main Drag it appears that everything in Portland is within walking distance. Very close to Powells Books, the Pearl District and the Waterfront.
The rooms were very spacious and comfortable and the service was friendly.
The hotel Concierge did a great job at directing to some great restaurants in the city and we will be back because of it.

This hotel is up there with the best of them. Not only is the decor fun and funky while maintaining class, the service is unbelievable. The staff bend over backwards to make even the most mundane of hotel stays something to write home about. I recently stayed for a business meeting and found the entire experience (meeting not included) delightful. My dealings with the sales/conference people went smoothly and they worked hard to accomodate my group's every need. The front desk and bellmen, etc. really made the stay special by remembering my name and making genuine, friendly conversation with me throughout my time there. The wine hour is also something else; during my stay the hotel brought in Voodoo Doughnuts to compliment the wine! It was kitcshy and cute--not to mention delicious. One last thing is Art, the hotel Lobby Dog. His big personality is like icing on the cake. The special touches this hotel is committed to are why I will look for Kimpton hotels whenever I travel.

Planning a wedding long distance is hard enough without the extra headaches from hotel monaco.

We planned to use this hotel for out of town guests for our wedding, but regret the day we contacted Hotel Monaco. They drafted a contract and blocked in our rooms based on PRELIMINARY conversations. Then showed no flexibility and were unwilling to accomodate us for a larger number of guests. we needed to increase the number of rooms and they REFUSED. they also refused to allow guests to come the night before.

Reservations, sales, and the director all told me the only choice we had was for guests to pay full price for friday night and get the discounted rate on saturday. Wrong there was another choice, we booked our block of rooms at the Westin.

The last weekend of Spring Break, my boyfriend and I decided to take a weekend away for ourselves and stay downtown. We found Hotel Monaco through Citysearch and decided to try it out. We got a great deal from their website by making reservations 14 days in advance. When we got there, the people were great, but discovered that we did not have a plasma TV and DVD player in our room, which the site stated we should (and what we reserved for). After my boyfriend mentioned this on our way back to our room before dinner, the front desk person was great. She stated that some of the renovations were done, but that was one that wasn't. They had the TV's and DVD's but didn't have the furnature yet to put them in. For our trouble, she gave us a complimentry contential breakfast for our room, and free Valet parking (which at $27 was great!). We had a wonderful nights stay, and great service all around. Not only that, but dinner at the Red Star was wonderful! We would love to stay there again for weekend get aways, not to far from home. It's a great hotel to stay even if you just want a place to crash downtown after a night of partying!

WOW...I do not know where to start. My girlfriend and I had tickets to the Capitol Steps show on election night, and decided to make a romantic night downtown out of it. I tried to get in the Heathman, Paragon, and the Vintage Plaza, but all were booked. When I was talking to the Vintage Plaza they informed of the 5th avenue suites and it was another Kimpton Hotel, so I jumped on it. I booked a king suite with the Romance Package. From the get go I know it was going to be a good night. We arrived at the hotel and used the valet parking since it was included on our package. The check in was easy and everyone was really nice and polite. The interior of the hotel was almost 18th Century Georgian with a little modern thrown in. Very nice. The free wine reception was nice also, although we didn't stick around very long since we had champagne in the room, plus I am more of a bourbon man, which just by chance I had nice bottle with me. When we walked into our room, our mouths dropped. The room was awesome and very big. A nice big bathroom that you could increase or dim the lights in. The sitting room was nice and the rose petals on the bed, champagne on the table, with romantic music playing on the radio...very nice touch guys...keep up the good work. The Red Star was also top notch. I will rate them on their on page. We will definitely be back!!! If you want to be pampered and have a relaxing stay.......this is the place!!!!

What a difference between this place and other. I live in Portland, so, don't usually get a chance to stay in Pdx hotels. A few months ago, my wife and I were stranded Dowtown with the ice storm - decided to make the best of it and have a romantic night out on the town. We looked at most of the 'in' hotels... Benson, Heathman, Governor, Lucia... 5th ave suites was in the same price range as the other (actually, $25 less if I remember correctly) but, you get so much more - very nice suite for a room, excellent service, nice atmosphere... Have to go, so I can't go on.. But, this is definitely the place to stay in Portland.

This is a chic and well-kept hotel in the heart of Portland, close to shops, food, and even has an Aveda spa in the lobby. Love the decor (lots of reds and golds), free wine tasting every weekday evening, and lots of cute extras. Room service dinner was fancy and delicious. My room was quiet and comfortable. I would stay here again.

The hotel is so cute and the staff is wonderful. I felt like I was in the midwest, where you typically get the "southern treatment." From the bellman to the concierge, I felt like I was getting more than my money's worth. The bed was very comfortable in the cute corner room I got.

The one downside would be the location. The entrance is on a one-way street, so make sure you know where you're going when you get there.

    I'll definitely stay here again.

My girlfriend and I stayed for just one romantic night at 5th Avenue Suites. During check-in we discovered our room was upgraded at no charge. I opted for one of their romantic packages ahead of time and we were greeted with sparkling wine on ice and rose petals. The package also included comped valet parking and continental breakfast. Their online reservation system was full featured while remaining easy to use. Their staff was professional and friendly. The hotel and rooms were in great shape -- very clean and accomodating. Wireless internet and wired internet were both available. Location was exceptional, just a couple blocks away from shopping, great food, and nightlife. I would not hesitate recommending this hotel.

This hotel itself is amazing. It is truly a classic. The rooms are all uniquely designed with beautiful wallpaper, art. The bedding is lavish and cozy and the bathroom is more than adequate.
On that note they also carry all Aveda products in the bathroom and have a Spa built into the hotel downstairs.
The Hotel is central to pretty much everything and has a pretty decent restaurant built in as well.
My only complaint would be the staff has their ups and downs.
More than a few times I have had to deal with incompetent front desk people. If it were not for that they would be getting the full 5 stars.

This hotel is pretty luxurious. It is old, but the building is renovated. Get a suitethey are more spacious. The room we stayed in was comfortable. The hotel is in a great location. The bathrobes were sure something. You have to park your car underground, I dont know if that is good or bad. The staff here are friendly and polite.

I travel alot for work. When ever I am in Portland, I always make it a point to stay at the 5th ave suites (or sister property the Hotel Vintage Plaza). These properties are the best mix of reasonable rates and 5 star service. The hotel is always very clean, staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. They also offer free wine tasting between 5-6 in their lobby. My vote for a the best hotel in Portland.

PROS: Great rooms, staff and restaurant

love staying here it is by far an above average hotel, beautiful 1912 style, high ceiling in the rooms, water pressure massage showers, nice decorations, wine tasting by the fireplace, and pet friendly. We stay here about twice a year with our Dachshund. Its hard to find a nice hotel that will let you have pets. If you get a street window room make sure you are on the 4th floor or higher you can sometimes hear noise from the street. Also the parking is expensive, but you are right downtown in walking distance to everything. Other than for that this place is wonderful!

The rooms were clean, service was good......and the central downtown location make this hotel a good bet. Parking is expensive if you have a vehicle...and Portland's transit center is so good, I'd suggest going against a car unless you really need one.

I stayed a whole week at the Fifth Ave Suites in July 2004 and really enjoyed it. The free wine tasting every afternoon is a great touch as are the great suites which give you two rooms, two tvs and a great bathroom.

My wife and I have stayed at a few places in downtown and have mostly got what we expected.
we stayed here on her birthday, and was very pleased with the room, the service, and the people.
although expensive (for me), the value was well worth it compared to the other places we have stayed in downtown portland.

I had read reviewers' comments about shabby rooms. However, when we most recently stayed at the hotel (Feb. 2004), we learned that all of the renovations have been completed. The guest rooms are beautiful -- new linens, paint, slipcovers on furniture, etc. We have stayed at this hotel several time over the past 7 years. The service has always been wonderful and friendly. Highly recommend this hotel.

Was at this hotel for the week of July 4th The staff from the Front Desk to the Room Service was ABOVE and BEYOND what I expect to get at a 4 Star property. Friendly at always courteous.

The Red Tavern does the food for RS and it was excellent, Bell & Valet knowledgeable as well as friendly. Office Sales staff congenial at the evening Wine Service. Rooms were a bit shabby but Bellman explained that they are going through renovations in the entire hotel. Great Location, close to everything. Aveda in the bathrooms beautiful Lobby and Rooms are impressive (even in their worn state) will be MUCH better I expect once they replace all of the linen.

My parents stayed here for my wedding they had a upgrade from a normal room; the room was HUGE and very clean, classy and nice. Out of all the hotels I have stayed in around and in Portland I would go back to 5th ave in a heart beat. I stayed at the vintage plaza and it didn't compare to the quality at 5th avenue!!

We reserved a suite for five nights, but found the accomadations so dingy and dirty, we only stayed for one. The furniture was worn, stained, and mismatched. The sheets were gray in color instead of white- and were so questionable as to cleaniless we slept on top of the comforter. A four star hotel this isn't- more like an overused motel 8. The parking in the parking garage was so small, we had a tough time finding a spot for our medium sized rental car. Our "suite w/ a spectacular view" proved to be an interesting view of the granite wall of the buiding next door. If you are vacationing in the beautiful city of Portland- choose a different hotel than this one.

We waited an hour just to park in their garage. Then we went inside and checked in the room was nice I expected a little bit fancier but not bad. We ate in the restraunt and the food wasn't any good. So I think next time I will stay some where else down town.

From what I can tell, this hotel is probably the best in Portland. I stopped in town about 2 years ago and just needed a place to sit between meetings. The 5th Ave. Suites was right there. I stay in the Four Seasons, the Ritz Carlton, and many other swanky hotels. This place is run by Kimpton - a top notch hotel chain running places like the Monaco and the Alexis in Seattle. I am going this weekend, but expect the best. I saw only quality all over this place & was treated with respect and absolute kindness. Top Notch! And very reasonable.

the front desk staff were very rude to us. it could be because we are in our 20's. they were very nice to other customers that were in line but those cusomers were in there 40's. We had no hot water in our room and I had to argue with them to switch rooms so i could shower. It was way over priced for what we got. So if you don't look like your a rich business man don't expect to be treated nicly.
