The place is awesome.. they have amazing prices and they still serve good quality food. The place is really famous in Pittsburgh, so if you are visiting, you should really go there. Make sure you understand your fries won't be as a side xD

I like this place. There aren't any bells and whistles, you know what you're going to get. The prices are pretty reasonable too. Great place to stop in and grab a sandwich!

We went on an east coast trip and our last stop was Primanti Brothers. Stayed the night in Pittsburgh just to go there.
What can you say!? It's a must. Delicious great service, amazing food. If you have heartburn bring your tums, or in my case gallbladder, your pain pills. It was worth every bit of it. I can't wait to go again!

Went here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. Never again. I went into the bathroom as the fat cook was coming out. He obviously destroyed the bathroom as it was nearly unbearable in there. He didn't wash his hands! He went right out and

This is by far a must see and eat in Pittsburgh! I've been here dozens of times. I have personally talked with all of the staff who are both friendly and happy. However, this is not a smiley FAKE place like most places. The food is amazing

Hi, I visited today from the Atlanta Georigia area. I enjoyed the sandwhiches and very prompt service, However...Not once did I get a smile or acknowledgement when I requested the order or side items. I was given the item, but when I would

They apparently don't know what a broom is. Food & paper all over the floor. The rest room is in the basement underneath the kitchen and FILTHY. The cheese steak sandwich barely had cheese & the steak was bland. We also had the sweet sausage sandwich & that was bland as well. I'm not sure if the best thing we had was the bread on the sandwiches or the saltine crackers we had with the terrible chili (just mildly hot, but NO taste either!)

The ketchup on the table tasted a little bit stale (refillable bottle, so the old ketchup is mixed with the new) and you NEED the ketchup to make everything taste like something!

Subway, Quizno's or Miami Subs will give you a tastier sandwich any day. Don't waste your time or $.

That said, my dad liked his egg sandwich - but he was really hungry so I don't know how valid his review is.

As a tourist, I went in on 5-19-2010 with high expectations after seeing it on Man Versus Food and was really disappointed in how the sandwich is just average and I'm being polite when I say average. I got the Cheese steak and what I got was a gray square piece of meat. I guess if you are drunk and can't taste the food then this is your place. I hope there is a better sandwich shop in Pittsburgh.

Pros: Service is fast, cheap prices

Cons: Staff is rude, sandwhich is not very good, no credit cards

My husband brought me to Primanti Brothers in the Strip District for the first time about 5 years ago. The place was packed to capacity and the service was a bit slow, but we had cold beer in front of us and no place to hurry up and get to. The menu board is on the wall and said all sandwiches come with fries and cole slaw. AWESOME! I like fries and cole slaw!!

The waitress set my waxed paper wrapped sandwich down in front of me and I looked at my husband in horror. The fries and slaw were ON my sandwich! They were TOUCHING each other - a big no no in my world. However, all it took was one bit and I was hooked. The Italian bread was fresh, the cabbage of the cole slaw was crunch and had just the right amount of flavor, the fries were hot and salty and everything blended together so well. I have had a couple of different sandwiches there, but I usually get the steak and cheese or the bologna and always an Iron City beer.

It's not fancy, the Strip Dist. shop is in an old building, it's clean, but don't expect high gloss chrome and glistening surfaces. It's old brass and wood where thousands of hard working people have come to grab a bite to eat and head back out to work. Don't expect plates and silverwear - food is served on wax paper sheets with plastic utensils. It's just perfect.

Pros: History, cold beer, great sandwiches

Cons: Croweded at times

The sandwich, steak and cheese, looked like a big mac, the sandwich literally had no flavor. The waitress never checked on us and we never got refills. The floor was littered with french fries and all kinds of stuff.

Not going back.

I first ate at the original Primanti Bros restaurant back in the 1980's and it was a hunger-busting experience. a generous portion of pretty good, quality meat, piled high on the sandwich, with a small amount of fries, and the coleslaw/tomato topping. I went back there last week and things had definitely changed. I ordered The Pittsburgher Cheese Steak sandwich. The joke was on me. I thought that I had ordered a steak sandwich. What I got was a previously frozen hamburger Patty, topped with a mound of greasy French fries, all for the extravagant price of $5.99. Basically, it was a French fry sandwich and it was awful. The quality of the food at Primanti Brothers has deteriorated. I don't know who would still want to eat there.

When I first moved here, this was the place where my friends took me to eat. It is real local color and cuisine. Unique, hearty and fun! It was as much a rite of initiation as it was a meal - down to earth, belly - filling comfort food! Primanti Brothers is the perfect way to make Pittsburgh home.

The food there is one of a kind but there is more than one Primanti Brothers in Pittsburgh. So if you want the best Primanti Brothers food you have got to go to the original one in the Strip District. I loved the sandwich's and after going to the original I love the experience.

We went there after the Steelers game and were highly disappointed. The waitress acted as if we were bothering her to order anything and the food was a few tiny pieces of something in the bread. My son was so sick that he threw up outside of the restaurant and in the hotel room and remained sick for a few days thereafter. It was a horrible experience. Never will we go back there even if it is the only place open in Pittsburgh!

Did you know Primanti Brother's steak sandwich is actually a beef hamburger pattie with TVP (Texurized Vegetable Protein, the same burgers with soy served at schools and prisons? Sandwich costs less than .75 to make.

I went to this place with a completely open mind and was expect a pretty solid (if not decent) sandwich. I can say this because I live in DC and did a 4hr drive on a whim to have one of these 'infamous' sandwiches that I had heard soo much about. I went to the original location and was really expecting a down home setting - simple but good food without all the frills. And that's pretty much what I got. But it most assuredly was not a sandwich that was worth all of the hype and reputation that it has received over the years.

I had 3 sandwiches (cheese steak, roast beef, and double egg) and none of them left me feeling all that impressed. I drove 4hrs, was basically starving myself to fully appreciate this place, and still ended up walking out thinking 'what in the hell is the big deal?'. I honestly would rather have had a bite from my local deli down the road to repeat the 'quality' of the food. Its not to say it was bad, but it was just very mediocre. That's it. If you have some time and want to say you went there, I recommend it. But if you're looking to have an mind blowing experience that Pittsburgh folk seem to describe from this place, you're not gonna get it.

Its a signature sandwich of the city alright...messy, simple, and not all that good.

Cons: Underwhelming with a lot of hype, Parking is huge pain, seating is an issue if its busy

Primanti Brothers is known for their huge sanwiches made with the freshest bread ever. The sandwiches are very unique and stacked high with meat, cheese, fries and cole slaw. They are a meal in themselves. The price is also reasonable for the amount of food that is between the bread. Better be hungry if you order one of these sandwiches!

Being from out of town, I asked - what is the local flavor of Pittsburgh. I figured these hearty steelworkers know good food the same as Kansas City locals know BBQ. Well let me tell you brother, this is not it. Sure it was cheap, $8 for my sandwich and a beverage. But wow was it hard to swallow....the sandwich was fresh enough, but the meat had no flavor, the cole-slaw was boring, and the whoel fries thing is just goofy. Believe me, I went in with an appetite, and an open mind to something new that I would love, but this just did not cut it. Gimmick for sure! Filling, absolutely. Tasty, NEVER. Memorable, yes, but not in a good way.

Pass. You will not regret passing on this one.

Primanti Brothers is the one famous restaurant that you HAVE to go to when visiting Pittsburgh. If you don't, you haven't experienced Pittsburgh. The sandwiches are amazing, with the fries and coleslaw thrown on there, which originated back in the days of the steel workers when they didn't have a lot of time for lunch. If you're an "on the side" kind of person, this place isn't for you. It's also a great late-night spot after a long night at the bar. Don't expect anything nice or upscale or amazing service-- expect paper plates, plastic utensils if you get any, very low prices (cheap beer too), and genuine people-- truly representing Pittsburgh.

I spent the afternoon being disappointed by Mineo's and Aiello's. After a workout at the hotel, I burned off the bad taste of Pittsburg-zza and thought long and hard about hitting Primanti's. The hype surrounding the famous sandwich was sure to fall flat, I mean the pizza was a complete bust. With the Steeler game on TV, I decided that I would go see how the vaunted Steel City Fan celebrated their game day/night, and went to Primanti's. HELLO!!!!! If Primanti's has been in decline like so many reviewers say, then I'm a monkey's uncle. This friggin sandwich is AMAZING. I had the #2, and wish I had ordered a second one. I cannot be eloquent about this darn sandwich. I cannot pretend to be a wordsmith, I can only say I am looking forward to waking up tomorrow, going for a run, working up an appetite and going back to Primanti's for more. I will NEVER tell people to try the pizza in Pittsburgh, but I will tell them to goto Primanti's early and often. Primanti's saved the gastronomical day, hooray!!!

Seems the more restaurants they open, the worse the food and quality gets. I talked about these sandwiches to an out of towner for months. She finally visited Pittsburgh and I took her to the original location and it was so dirty she didn't want to sit down. There wasn't a table with scraps and glasses piled on it, and the place was almost empty. She looked over the menu and asked the tattooed person at the grill a question and he told her he was too busy to answer questions. (there were two tables with 5 people total at them, not including us). We decided to leave and give our money to another establishment when I girl came in saying there had been an accident out front and could she use the phone. Again, the tattooed guy told her no, he was too busy and no one but staff used the phone.

Nice.

There are plenty of other places in Pittsburgh to get a Primanti type sandwich to put put up with rude employees and dirty tables. I'll pass and just order one somewhere else from now on.

My friend refers to Primanti's as "that place where the street with the used rubber on it was cleaner than the restaurant".

When I first moved to Pittsburgh just a few months ago it seemed that virtually every local I spoke with recommended me to eat at Primanti Brothers. Apparently, Primantis is something of a legend around here, but I'm sorry, I just don't get it!

Naturally, I took the advice I'd been given and visited South Side's favorite eatery on two occasions to check it out, but left feeling underwhelmed. So, why go twice? Well, the first time I ate there it was okay... kinda... nothing special, but it was okay. The bread was good and fresh (not that I would expect anything less) and it filled a gap.

Second time, I ordered the three cheese sandwich (at least, I think that's what they called it). Again, the bread was fine, but the fries were undercooked and hard in the middle, even though it wasn't particularly busy that day, and the sandwich was topped off with a huge helping of an unpleasantly over-sweet cole slaw. Added to that, I had to really search to find what little cheese was in there, and it was all served up without so much as a "please", a "thank you" or even a welcoming smile.

Hmmmm! A case of the "Emperor's New Clothes", perhaps? Sorry Pittsburgh, I've eaten at some great places since coming here, but as far as I'm concerned, Primanti Brothers isn't one of them.

Needless to say, I won't be going a third time.

We ate at a suburban branch (north versailles). Service was poor. Sandwich had dry bread and a small pathetic amount of meat. No hunks of meat whatsoever. It was the cappicola and cheese. (which IS lunchmeat, but I remember more meat in the past).

Been eating here 20 years & can say I've had everythng on the menu & its all been GREAT! If you want true Primantis go to the Strip (Market Square is OK) forget the others; ESPECIALLY THE NEWER SUBURBAN LOCATIONS; which have catered to the yuppie suburban crowd; adding items @ suburban locations that no true Pittsburgher would want or expect from the Primanti tradition.
Always wonderful bread; tomatoes always fresh, cole slaw superb & vinegar based (southern style), french fries are definitely to die for meat & cheese are always perfect. TRUELY THE PERFECT SANDWHICH! For the best quick meal around get the Capacolla w/ cheese; a bowl of their heavenly chili & an IC Light. Dont ruin the sandwhich with ketcup, etc. Just use the hot sauce that is on every table; that is all you need.
A MUST DO WHILE IN THE BURGH; drunk or sober!!

I would eat there every day if it wouldn't make me huge! I'm not big on coleslaw so they always hold that for me, but other than that - pile it on. Very messy but fun!

PROS: OH so very delicious
CONS: locations

Primanti Bros is a "Must Have" when in Pittsburgh. Their sandwiches are awesome. They are stacked a mile high with meat, fries, and coleslaw. I wasn't sure if I'd like it...but it was definetly the best sandich I have ever had. We also had the smothered fries which were top of the line! The whole experience was fun and exciting. The staff was great and I even walked out with a t-shirt as a souvenier! I heard about this place on the food network and it is definetly a "BEST OF" that I have ever had.

I found "P" when I was in hs. Now that I live 1083 miles away, it is a sojourn when I get back to PGH. I've tried the others-nothing like the Strip at 0200 hrs! The wife didn't care for it, kids loved it! We make our own "Primammi's" at home for a taste of PGH. Now if I could only find Iron City out here!

when i first went to WVU, my friends frmo pittsburgh insisted i try primantis. i think i got the hot sausage, but when i looked at my sandwich, i thought they got the order wrong. all i saw was undercooked, dry fries and thick, tough, dry cole slaw. finally, after scraping off most of the slaw and fries, i found my blandly cooked sausage, which of course was not spicy in the least. does it even matter what you order there? its all gonna taste the same with the overload of cole slaw and fries. on top of it all, the bread was sort of sour tasting. i could have made a better sandwich myself with ingredients bought from Aldi.

My husband grew up in Pittsburgh and brought me here for lunch while visiting family. What a great sandwich! Do not eat breakfast or anything before going to Primanti Brothers as their sandwhiches are HUGE. You also must have your sandwich with an Iron City Beer for the full experience. Enjoy!

I have to admitt, I do miss the days of goint to clubs in the strip, and then hitting Permantis @ 2:30am till 3:30am.

These Guys have the best sqandwich any where.
I have been living in NYC for 6 years and there is no deli here that can compare to permantis.
the famous Katz Deil cant even compare their sammich is $12.50 and there is no Slaw or fries on it. carnegie Deli forget about it.

We need a Permanti brothers in NYC
Would need to Import some Burgh Boys to work there.

If you're looking for a fun place to grab a filling meal quick, and cheap, this is a staple! The atmosphere is one that suits you...it's relaxing, fun, personable. The food, a unique classic (hard to find these days), fit the atmosphere. Nothing fancy, just good and the way you'd want to eat ...not with a fork and knife, but relaxed. An all-in-one sandwich that has stood the test of time and eras, it's worth the trip. Would you go into a fun place to order quiche? I think not.

I really did....I just couldn't. And I have to say that I am from down south and I am used to my foods swimming in grease and enjoy the occasional deep fried delight. I just though that the sandwiches were very bland and soggy. I have tried about 4 different varieties and find that the bread is bad, the fries are soggy, and there really is no taste at all. I was very disappointed. And the main review says they don't serve beer??? What???

Pirmanti Bros is the best value in Pittsburgh, plus it has become a tradition of the city. Get a whole meal in between two pieces of bread. You'll love it. Big food at a big value

I remember visiting the South Side of Pittsburgh as a young, fresh-faced 21-year-old woman. Oh yes... I remember the day just as if it were yesterday.... I started as a sober ride to Pittsburgh and ended in drunken mass chaos. After spending practiclly all of my money at numerous bars, I was insanely hungry but had limited funds. That's when I discovered the magical wonderment that is the Primanti Bros. Ragin' Cajun Chicken sandwich. That thing saved my life that night. Ok, well, maybe not, but it certainly filled me up and made the ungodly painful hangover I had the next day a bit more tolerable. EAT THE CHICKEN SANDWICH. YOU'LL SEE THE FACE OF GOD.

After moving to AZ, there is nothing I crave more than a Primanti Brother's Sandwich. Some may say it's perfect for after a night at the bars...but I love 'em any time of day!

If you wnat to experience a true taste of da 'burgh, Primanti's is where it's at! I make sure every trip back to PA has a Primanti sandwich on the schedule!

The last two times I've been to Permanti's are my last two times. Both times I took out of town guest because it's the "Pittsburgh thing". Never again, Sandwiches were dry, overpriced, and waitresses seemed to hurried to be friendly. I'll take the O in Murraysville of Mike's Diner in Cheswick for best value

W.PA is a fantastic blend of ethnic groups- they are what the Steel City was built on. Why shouldn't the best food in PGH epitomize the characteristic so unique to PGH? The food awesome, service exacltly what you should expect and prices affordable. I've never had a beter made-to-order meal. It was started in Strip District for working men. Good, filling, original eat-on-the-go food that the average person can afford. And quit dissing the slaw! In most areas of the country, (contrary to what KFC tells you) slaw is vinegar-based and Primanti's happens to be some of the best I have ever tasted. Don't change a thing! Perhaps the people that don't like it should frequent somewhere really original & tasty like McDonalds. Yum. As for the rest of us - keep up the good work. It's good to know that we can still count on good food in PGH.

I was looking forward to trying my first Primanti Sandwich - I heard so much about it and even saw it on a Food Network show. However, when my I bit into the sandwich I realized I had wasted $5. The bread was not good Italian bread (quite crumbly), the cole slaw wasn't the good creamy kind (it was basically cabbage soaked in vinegar), the fries were soggy and excessive (all I could actually taste on my sandwich was a huge pile of undercooked fries), and the "cheesesteak" was nothing more than a sort of hamburger with a very small amount of cheese. To choke down my dry, greasy sandwich, I had to dump mounds of ketchup onto it. I think people praise this place because it is known as a Pittsburgh institution. Or they have eaten there after a night of drinking and think any food is tasty!!
