The food here isn't bad at all. It's pretty good. I will come here again and try more of the other food. Need to try it!

I made this reservation based on the great reviews. There were 8 of us. Initially, the waiter was funny, in sort of a rude, condescending way. Then it was too much! He asked us if we wanted expresso. \r

I went with a group of friends (party of 8). They had no ice to chill our wine (and keep in mind it's a byob) plus they rushed us to seat the next group despite us making a reservation weeks in advance. Will not go back.

From the Moment my group of six from out of town walked in we were treated very rudely by our waiter. He was condesinding if not down right rude the entired time he waited on us. He did not commuicate accurately what the dishes were, and so we did not get what we expected. He also dissapeared out on to the street for most of our service to do who knows what, and so the chef was the one who took care of us, when we could get his attention. we waited quite some time to get someones attention so we could get our bill, and they refused to split the ticket even when we asked them specifically before hand. I have been all over the country and the world, and it was by far the worst service i have ever had. I was higly dissapointed as many locals had recomended this place, but i guess you have to be a local in order to have a good experience at this restaurant. Food was ok, but forgetable.

La Locanda was a fantastic tiny little restaurant in Old City. The restaurant is so small that you immediately feel at home. You can tell that the staff love working there, which makes the experience all that much better. The food of course is the most important part of the experience, and there is no let down there.

I have been here once. Great Italian food with great staff. Mussels are fantastic and the homemade gnocchi is incredibly rich. They don't really take reservations (do it in seatings), so be sure to call ahead to see what the deal is.

La Locanda is my all time favorite BYO in Philadelphia. I have been here easily over a dozen times for everything from dates, to birthday celebrations, to casual dinners out, and every time it is a fabulous experience. The food here is phenomenal, the mushroom crepes are heaven on a plate, and the tiramisu is the best I've ever had. The only thing that tops the food at La Locanda is the staff. They are so friendly, accommodating and highly entertaining. The last time I was there, the waiter had my mother laughing so hard she was crying! There is nothing bad I can say about La Locanda. But if you want to go on a friday or saturday night, be sure to make a reservation by wednesday, otherwise you won't get a table.

We had a party of six so they picked our appetizers and it was all done family style. Very good. We all had a meal, something different and then we shared! Again awesome. We shared a few desserts and all had expresso, no plain coffee - of any kind. Bill, including tip was only 260.00 - not bad for ALL the food. Took a taxi back to the hotel.

What a great place! cheap and good plus you feel like you're sitting at your family's house. It's bustling and noisy but that's what makes it so fun!

My husband and I visited the restaurant last night. We had an ok experience. We both had specials and mine was a fish that was breaded sauteed then baked. This cooking resulted in a dry and bready dish that they should really consider taking off the list. My husband had a pork chop that he said was ok, a little overcooked. The highlight of the meal was the homemade ricotta gnocchi. They were light as a feather and the sauce was excellant. We ended the meal with a delicious tiramisu which they gave us on the house because our table was right next to the door where people were waiting to be seated. if you go make sure you ask for tap water as you will not be given that option, they offer mineral or still bottled water. I ordered the still thinking it was tap but guess what....$ 5:00 for a bottle which we didn't finish. If we go again I would get an appetizer and a pasta course as the entrees really are home cooking that you may already make yourself.

I went this past Saturday and I have to say this was an amazing experience! My mother and my boyfriend?s parents were meeting for the first time and this was the perfect spot for dinner. I had read other reviews and I wasn?t sure what to expect. I've been to many BYOBs in Philly and I wanted to try something new. First off the food was marvelous. We had the $35 prix fixe menu. Basically you choose an appetizer, pasta, entree, and dessert off of the complete menu (anything you want.) There was so much food! And the flavor was remarkable! The mussels (I had mine in the white sauce) and gnocchi were to die for! Everyone in our group was raving about how great the food was. The menu isn?t huge but that is nice as everything they do is perfected. My boyfriend had one of the best mahi mahi?s he has ever tasted (and he is into his fish.) Not only was the fish good but it was covered with a ton of other seafood. Be sure to leave room for the tiramisu as it melts in your mouth! They have oso bucco on the menu every night and you won?t be disappointed. Like other reviews it was just like stepping into an old school Italian home. You need to take the waiters suggestions and follow their lead; they know what they are talking about. Also they are true Italians and will not be dancing around you to make you happy, like they say ?this isn?t Le Bec Fin!? They treat you like old family friends with a bit of tongue in cheek. Make a reservation for one of the 3 nightly seating and plan to be there for the full 2 hours. People that say they were rushed must not have been listening when they made the reservation as they clearly say that it will take 2 hours to eat but you can only have 2 hours as they must seat the next patrons. If you need more time I suggest taking the 9pm seating. Be sure to bring plenty of wine and be ready for a good time with family and friends. If you are an uptight stick in the mud I suggest you go someplace else, they would probably too.

My wife and I first visited this BYO several years ago and have been big fans ever since. The menu is small and simple but offers amazing food, and because of the small menu your food arrives at the table very quickly. The portion sizes are perfect and generous. The servers are friendly, warm and make you feel like you are sitting down at your grandmothers house rather than a restaurant. There isnt one thing on the menu I cannot recommend. Be sure to make reservations early in the week for a weekend date. Sitting outside in the summer is nice but 3rd street can get a little busy. The best seats are in the corner by the kitchen or near the window...request these when you make your reservations.

I recently organized a girls weekend for 14 ladies. We ate here on a saturday night for dinner. I was a bit anxious about it due to never having dined here before, and reading some other reviews it seemed it could go either way. Well- I am so glad I choose La Locanda. The whole experience, really could not have been better. The place is small but they had no trouble accommodating such a large group. We sat right near the kitchen. The place was charming, welcoming and warm. Our waiter was just perfect. The food was delicious. We were not rushed at all - although we did follow the suggestion of about one bottle for every 2 people which was plenty. They put our white in the freezer to keep it cold and re-corked anything we didn't drink. Our waiter made a big fuss over the bachelorette, without us asking him too, and really made us feel special. We felt like we were at a big family party! We had the apps family style as they recommended and there was so much food, we really didn't need the entrees we had ordered. However we were all glad we did they were so delicious! Everything I tried was great- although the mussels, gnocchi and espresso were stellar for me. A great kick off to such a great night! Thank you La Locanda!!! We will be back.

I was very disappointed since a good Italian friend of mine and several other friends had raved about how great this restaurant is so I was really looking forward to a great meal, good ambience and a fun time with a group of my friends. What I experienced, however, was quite different.

We had reservations and knew we needed to get out in time for the next group's seating which was 2 hours after ours. Still, the wait staff rushed us throughout the meal and kept pushing to make sure we knew we had to be out on time. I felt like we were being treated like kids.

That, coupled with very average Italian food made for a meal worth keeping in mind only for the fact I won't be returning. Even my Italian friend who was there with me and had said such great things about the restaurant admitted the food wasn't good the last two times they'd gone.

There are DEFINITELY better Italian places to eat in Philly. I'll for sure be going to one of those instead.

This is my first time writting a review, and I just had to do it because my experinces at these restaurant have been so good over the past several years. This is a small restaurant with a big heart! The waiter will greet you like and old friend and exclaim excitedly that a clean plate "is jusst what we like to see". The food is hearty italian fare, and the specials are always delicious.

Amazing, amazing, amazing. Small and intimate. Our favorite place in the city. The specials are always incredible, and the muscles are the best I've ever eaten. Love the people who work there even more -- always smiling, always happy to bring you more amazing food. The place is small and can get very warm, but it's very cozy and has so much character.

I never write these things. But this was such a bad experience I need to tell you-never come here. The waiter was rude, kept interrupting me and my girlfriends to take our CAR KEYS to move our cars (like we want this a** in our cars)....he made the whole experience unpleasant, and I when he stopped tornado-ing around the restaurant for a minute I told him this and he cursed at me. He shouted the specials to the whole restaurant, but then was interrupted when he had to seat a table that walked in, then interrupted the whole place again to bark the specials again. The meal tasted like something I would make when I was out of main ingredients and didnt feel like running to the store. LASTLY, check your check when you pay. He likes to add his own undeserved 22 percent gratuity--dont try to make a wish if your friends bring you a bday cake, because he yells at you to get it over with.

I've been a patron for more than 10 years, and I haven't even been alive for more than 20. My dad used to take me here when I was a child, and it stuck so vibrantly in my head that when it came time for me to start going out on my own (with friends or a significant other) this place was the first place I went. The food is always brilliantly prepared exactly as it's ordered, and the price (though somewhat expensive) reflects the quality of the meal. They're a small place, so you can't expect it not to be crowded and loud, and they're popular, so if you want to sit for more than half an hour after your meal, they'll probably start asking you to leave. If you go in expecting those things (as you should, for the type of restaurant) you won't be disappointed. The wait staff is friendly and treats you like family, the view of the kitchen is fantastic while you're waiting for your food, and to this day I still use Joe's rules in my every day life: no more than one bottle of wine per two people, and never put cheese on seafood.

Remember: always have cash (they don't take cards), and bring your own wine.

My family and friends hosted a dinner party for my 30th birthday last weekend. First of all they had the table that was finishing up before us leave so we could sit down! They told us they do family style appetizer samplings for large groups (which really meant they bring everything on the menu x2) and you can't order soup if you are in a large group; they opened every bottle of wine that was one the table, left the white wine and champagne sitting on the table (b/c they are a byob restaurant that does not have ice buckets!!), they didn't give the option of bottled water or tap just brought bottled, the waiter was rude and would make comments as he was walking away from the table, there was a fight in the kitchen for about 15 mintues, food was burning and the area where we were sitting filled with smoke, we were rushed to order our entrees... but then waited over 30 minutes for them to come out, one guest was yelled at for asking them to leave out the tomatoes from the shrimp dish, another guest was yelled at for not telling the waiter to save the crab cake appetizer for her entree b/c she was supposed to know they did not have anymore left, they did not come and offer any more water when the 2 little bottles ran out for the 14 guests, one guests flounder was very overcooked and was yelled at for not sending it back but she could not b/c no one came over to the table to see if we were ok, you got yelled at if you tried to stand up b/c you were in the way, did not offer coffee (oh that's b/c they don't have coffee) or dessert, brought out the icecream cake for my birthday and it was melted, poured our champagne in wine glasses b/c they don't own champagne glasses, not even 4 minutes after the cake was served and champagne, they were asking us to finish up and get out, there were 3 bottles of wine just opened, 2 big bottles of champagned gone to waste. The only positive thing i have to say about this place is the mussels and homemade gnocci were pretty good.

We had a family gathering of 18 people on a Saturday night and although I heard the food was incredible here I was nervous about trying to pick a place that would please all 18 people. As we walked out of the restaurant there wasn't a person from our table that wasn't impressed with the food and the atmosphere. The servers were friendly and made the experience fun. The staff is incredibly enthusiastic and proud about their restaurant and they have every right to be since we were impressed with every dish that arrived at the table. Our family became their family and we'll be back for sure!

Walk in the door and you're smacked with the smell of garlic and bread. A minute later your greeted and seated at a table in this small but cozy restaurant. The server greets you and rattles off the evening's specials while from the open kitchen pans clatter and clang and orders are shouted in. Don't be mistaken, this isn't a fast food, informal joint. It's a family place and they treat your like you're one of them. The prosciutto is amazing, the eggplant pate is delicious. You can't go wrong with the scallop appetizer. I ordered the spinach and cheese gnocchi and my friends had the 3 cheese raviolli and flounder, all of which were as rich and delicious as you'd expect from this place. The portions are HUGE, so bring a bottle of wine and take your time with dinner. If you happen to finish or leave room for dessert, they have some great options, but I've never made it that far. Go there for the authentic atmosphere, awesome food and great customer service!

Pros: Great ambiance, Food, Service

Cons: Parking, Busy on weekends

.

The smell of garlic hits you in the face as you walk in and the heat from the kitchen makes you sweat, but in a good way. The food is amazingly fresh and delicious. The service is authentic and very loud, but loud that makes you laugh as everyone else in the small room listens to the specials as they're belted out to your table. The price is noce and the menu has classics not drab americanized dishes.

Very good BYOB. Food was excellent. Try the Crab Cake appitizer and the Ravioli of The Day. I was there on a busy Friday night. It was pretty crowded, and very loud. Wait staff was friendly, and the bottled spring water is free.

The local favorite Italian of many Old City dwellers surpasses many other great Italian places in Philly with its unforgettable melt in your mouth pastas and desserts, the tell it like it is friendly servers and intimate cozy one room restaurant. We bring all our out of town visitors here and are never disappointed. A great place for groups or a date -- we try other places but always come back here as often as possible -- just remember it's cash only and a BYOB -- make reservations for the weekends as it gets packed!

After not being here for many years, we decided to try it again on a recent weekend evening. Some things have changed and others have not. First of all, it is still cramped, noisy and rushed. It is still a BYO; they still only offer bottled water and espresso. They still don't allow you to put grated cheese on seafood pasta. I happen to agree with this; however, if you're paying good money, you should be able to put anything you want on your food. Speaking of the food, it has canged for the worst. The homemade pasta was so overcooked, I could eat it with a spoon. The tiramisu was good. There are so many great Italian restaurants in the area, I can't imagine why you would go here.

My wife and I live in the neighborhood and this used to be our favorite restaurant. She still loves it, but a few of the recipes have changed, including my favorite Veal dish.

True to the BYOB, you are free to bring anythything, including Beer, Wine, Soda, etc. They only offer still and sparkling water and espresso.

Reservations are recommended, especially if you plan to dine on a first friday. I also believe they are closed on Mondays.

La Locanda del Ghiottone is the best restaurant I've ever been to, period. The food is spectacular, the atmosphere is romantic and comfortable and the prices are unbelievably great, but what makes this place even better (and topping the delectable mushroom crepes they serve is quite the feat), this place has the absolute best staff. Joe, the maitr'e d is incredibly funny and knows a ton about Philly history and Joe Messina (the man in charge) is the most accomodating and professional guy in the business. The open kitchen provides a great view of the experience in the kitchen and you can feel free to go right up and ask them questions while they work. I can't describe enough how much I love this place.
It's a great date spot, a wonderful family dinner spot and it's definitely a place you can go by yourself and get a great meal and no doubt the staff will keep you company.
I wish I could have brought this place with me to San Francisco!!!

We made reservations about a month in advance for a party of 8 for my boyfriend's birthday. The staff was wonderful in accomodating our large party and offered us a little bit of everything from the appetizer menu "family style"... everything we tasted was absolutely delicious. Our entrees were fantastic as well (I had the chicken stuffed with gorgonzola- yum!) and the tiramisu was the best we'd ever had. We were all completely blown away by our experience at La Locanda and the bill at the end didn't ruin our night either!

We were waiting for the table that this party refused to get up from. We were informed theywere 45 minutes late for they"re 8 oclock reservation. We had a 10 oclock reservation on a busy Saturday night. The staff asked very politely, twice, if they would allow someone else to sit, one man at the table said that his friend was not finished with his wine, which was less than half filled. Then he stood up and began to give the waiter a hard timethen he was told to get out. These people received more than they"re fair share of time to eat, as we did not sit down till10:30. This is a small , happy atmosphere with outstanding food at reasonable prices where a party of 4 could eat well for under a 100 dollars. It"s not a five course, 1000 dollar meal where you need to stay for 4 hours.

As soon as I took my last fork full, I was handed the bill and asked to leave! 2 min. later we were asked to leave again. I WAS LIVID! I went up to that waiter and said that I thought he was very unprofessional and how dare he treat his customers this way. He said, "I was rude?" My friend's husband then backed me up and the waiter just continued to yell at us. The waiter and this FAT lady from the kitchen HOLDING UP a spatula were chasing us out of the resturaunt telling us to NEVER RETURN. When I called my friend that night who has gone there before, she said, "I forgot to tell you about that part. They do that a lot to people." I will NEVER STEP FOOT in that resturaunt again. Actually I think we are now on La Locanda's most wanted list!

The latest visit last night to perhaps one of the best restaurants in Philly didn't disappoint. Our table was ready about 20 minutes prior to our 9:30 reservation. The food, as always, was very good. The tuna special was large and cooked well, and included delicious tidbits of other other seafood. Be warned though about being pressured to order the antipasto - it's expensive and the serving for 2 was more than enough for our group of 5. It can also be a little loud, and it's frequently boisterous as the scene for numerous celebrations. There were 5 birthday parties there.

On our way to La Locenda to celebrate a friend's upcoming wedding, after an hour's drive, someone from the restaurant called and said rudely, that the reservation was cancelled. No apologies!!The explanation was there was no accomadation. When my husband mentioned that they had prior reservations, he was asked what part of the explanation did he not understand!!! A few minutes later, my husband gets a call from La Locenda, now saying that they could come on down and that seating was available. When my husband mentioned that their reservation was cancelled just a few minutes ago, the person realized he had called my husband again, instead of the some other dinner party. He immedaitely became apologetic and his tone became very nice.No amount of good food can convince me go to a place that disrespects their customers, especially those with advance reservations. Especially a place that is so cramped.

Unbelievable restaurant! The food was absolutely amazing! I can honestly say it was the best Italian food that I have ever had.
This little BYOB has so much charm and the service was wonderful. If you like a family owned restaurant atmosphere this is for you. It's a very loud and happy place and you will leave smiling. It is small though so I recommend making reservations. We were with a party of 14 so they can accomodate larger parties.

Besides from the food and the restaurant's convenient location near Olde City, the best part of this restaurant is the service. The waiters are friendly and helpful, and the manager even came to serve us himselves. Also, if you are looking for a restaurant good for groups or just couples, this restaurant is great for both.

My boyfriend and I love to go here for a meal on an off night - (tues - thurs). The mussels are unbelievable! We have to get them everytime. Salmon is wonderful and I've never had a special I didn't devour. Weekends are very crowded (must be the great food).

I went to this place with a large group, we were told that they "do something special with large groups" (our group was 12) and that they would do "a sampling" of the appetizers. It wasn't a SAMPLING, it was EVERY appetizer, twice. Very good food, we just would have appreciated if they TOLD US they were giving us full size portions of every appetizer and not what they called "a sampling." Other than that it was fantastic!

Outstanding food, great service, reasonable prices. This place is NOT trendy, just the way I like it. We had an early reservation (6 pm on a Saturday night during the Fringe Festival) so the place was practically empty. By 7:30 it was starting to fill up, but we were not rushed to leave. They start you with warm bread and three dipping sauces. The sauces were so good it was almost impossible not to gorge yourself. The mushroom crepes were melt-in-your-mouth-to-die-for, the stuffed veal chop special was amazing, and the tiramisu was some of the best I've ever had. 2 entrees, 1 appetizer (big enough for 2), and 1 desert came to $60. I was a little disappointed that we were charged $4 for the water (it was brought in bottle form and we were not told there would be a charge) but not enough to not go back!

Excellent food, beautifully romantic atmosphere, and a reasonable price. Having severely over-estimated the traffic, we arrived about 30 min. ahead of our reservation and the waiter never let us forget that. We were rushed through our meal and the waiter noted loudly to the hostess next to our table that people showing up early "ruin the seating the entire night." Kind of a poor note to leave on...but otherwise a wonderful experience.

Last Friday I had one incredible meal. An array of anti-pasto, a veal chop (medium) with a blueberry demi-glaze, asparagus, and small roasted potatoes, and a little bottle of carbernet I happened to pick up on the way there.
Remember to bring cash and when they have lasagna, drop everything at try it. It will literally melt in your mouth.

It's the neighborhood restaurant I always dreamed of -- great, friendly service; wonderful food; fair prices. Seating with reservations is always prompt. The restaurant has a sensational way with fish and seafood, but everything is top-notch. Just remember to bring cash, since it doesn't take credit cards.

The staff and the food at La Locanda are the best you will find. The Management truly care about your dining experience. The relaxed atmosphere is second to none. La Locanda is one of my two favorite Philly BYOBs. It has a romance and authenticity to it and is charming and quaint. It can get a little noisy and crowded on weekends, but the food is delectable and the service friendly and knowledgeable. Its a must see/taste.

A small close knit place with great food and atmosphere. Be prepared to wait for a table, it's a small spot, but it's definitely worth it. The food came out so fast we thought they brought it to the wrong table we were so amazed!! For an appetizer, you have to get the mushroom crepes!!! Out of this world!! I got the bronzino fish and it was fabulous. Definitely a spot on my list that I will be walking to more frequently!

This place deserves a visit. The kitchen is open-sight, you'll see how they cook for you, no tricks. Pasta is the real one - try the fettuccine - tasty, solid, with fresh ingredients. Seafood is fresh and matched with tasty vegetables and greens. Service is kind and attentive. Bring your own wine. Really worth the price.

We all agree that this is one of the most unique and comfortable high class Italian restaurants in the city. I've gone with most of my friends and my boyfriend and they all want to go back again.
The service is great (don't let the thick Italian accents throw you), the food incredible (some of the best seafood), and the ambiance is unsurpassable. They don't take reservations but you can wait at Anthony's Pub and they'll call you when your table's ready.
