Visited a year and a half ago with two friends and Enjoyed it very much. The waitress at that time was Elizabeth and she was a doll. Despite the negative reviews posted in the past year, through caution to the wind and visited again with my wife and two other friends just before Easter. Ate in the lounge since it is more informal with the same great view. We were seated immediately, everyone thoroughly enjoyed thier entrees and the waitress, Heather, could not have been more pleasant or attentive. I feel sorry for those that experienced an unpleasant visit, but for me, they are ""2 for 2"". I will be sure to visit again the next time I am in Pittsburgh.

I agree with the review of "Disappointed". Everytime we go there I have to tell the waiter just a little bit of sauce on the fish. Before that my fish whether it was the mediterranean grouper or a special of the night was always floating in the sauce. I actually thought I received the wrong order. It looked like a piece of fish in a bowl of soup. I'm not too eager to go there anymore even though we love fish.

Extremely disappointed! It has been a few years since my last visit to your restaurant. In the past, I routinely brought out of town clients and co workers to the restaurant for the view and the great food. Tonight my dinner was awful. I ordered Grouper Monterey style. No recipe anywhere would smother any fish with at leat 16 oz of artichoke hearts, olives, tomatoes and mushrooms. When my plate arrived, I thought I had been given a cassarole by mistake. If you are really trying to be a seafood restaurant you should look to the Fish Market or SteelHead Grille for guidance. Don't think I will ever return to Monterey Bay except for cocktails and the view. I can have better meals at many other establishments. Maybe you need a real chef to prepare meals. Wasn't impressed with the catfish my Mother had, nor was my husband impressed with the New York Strip. We ate at the Capital Grille on Sunday and the food was sooooo much better! You need to have more than a view to keep customers returning...or maybe that doesn't matter!

If it weren't for the glitz of the main dining room the Monterey Bay Fish Grotto wouldn't rate the one star. How this place stays in business is beyond me. Well, there is the awesome view. Outside of that this visitor was UNIMPRESSED at best.

As a journalist, my travels take me all around the country and to every type of restaurant. Monterey Bay Fish Grotto is situated atop Grandview Avenue overlooking the river and Heinz Field but its attention to customers is sliding uncontrollably off that perch. In all my dining experiences, I have never come across such deplorable customer service.

The waitress was as absent minded as she was untrained, often forgetting simple things like a place setting. To be honest, I believe she actually forgot about our 4-person group all together. It took us over 2 hours for what should have been a 50-75 minute meal. Since the most complicated meal ordered at the table was a simple broiled trout, there was no reason for the extended wait.

if you think our wait was long, think again. A couple at an adjacent table ordered the Special (and highly priced) 5-course meal at the same time our table ordered. They were still waiting on their second or third course as we were leaving.

Lastly, what could be said about the manager on duty except he's sorry. He has absolutely no idea how to run a restaurant. After the food arrived, he made his appearance. I'm still trying to figure out why since the service failed to improve. This staff should take a few courses at McDonald's University where customer service is job #1. If there was ever a reason to shun high-priced fare and stick to the bustling pubs operating throughout the Steel City this horrid excuse for an upscale restaurant is it. Just say no to Monterey Bay Fish Grotto and save yourself a headache and plenty of coin.

After a long day of travel from Atlanta to Pittsburgh about 2 weeks ago, this restaurant came highly recommended. While the view was excellent, the service was terrible. We waited a very long time for menus, then drinks and it took a couple of hours before our food arrived. Part of our order was wrong and the food was not good. Management was called to our table and he offered us desert which at that point we had no interest in. The manager took our valet ticket and had our car brought to the door but we still had to pay for parking. Do not go there hungry. Or just go check out the view from Mt Washington across the street.

I made a reservation for my wife's birthday. The staff called my home and blurted out the confirmation request. Needless to say, it ruined my surprise and disappointed my wife. If the staff is this poorly trained, it won't be worth it.

I have eaten here in the past and is was always a pleasant experience. However last night was a complete disapointment. Food was not good, wait staff unprofessional, Cocktail smalll and watered down, Lemon sole (overcooked) could not have been more than 2 ounces with nothing else on the plate. When we left, we imediatly proceeded to a real restraunt. If convenient parking is the only requirement for dinning out, then this is your place.

I used to LOVE this restaurant but it is not what it used to be and there are much better restaurants in Pittsburgh.\r
\r
Pro: The main course (fish / crabcakes) are still good as is the view.\r
Cons: The current chef is the main issue as three of the dishes we had were awful: \r
1. The clam chowder soup used to be my favorite. I hadn't been at the restaurant in a while so I was craving my old favorite (which is what you are accustomed to getting in restaurants). I ate one bite of their new version of the soup and set it aside to be taken away. It is disgusting and easily the worst I have ever had!!! It was extremely thick but not rich thick, it was like they put in a pound of flour.\r
2. Shrimp Fried Rice: Odd choice on the menu but I had to get it as I like shrimp fried rice. My mistake. It was not good. This guy needs to go to China Palace to get a better idea on the dish as I could have made what he made at home (and I am not a good cook).\r
3. Grilled Brocolli side: Best way to describe this is eating a dead pine tree branch. Yuck!\r
4. Still no lobster on the menu which is just silly for a seafood place.\r
\r
Bottom line, if you are going to spend $150 on dinner you would be better off going to Ruth's Chris, Grand Concourse, Capital Grille or the Fish Market. I know this sounds crazy from someone that used to love this place but I couldn't believe how bad my experience turned out to be. :(\r
\r
Anyway, I rarely write reviews but had to take a few minutes out of my schedule to keep others from making the same mistake that I did. \r
\r
Trust me on this one...

Pros: Wonderful food and view

We have dined here a few times. We find the service impeccable, and the food has been great every time we have been here. Often, we will just have hors d'oeuvres in the lounge and enjoy the view. However, we have seen valet at times be quite aggressive with the vehicles, and are often less than patient. We did complain, and the manager was very apologetic and advised it would be handled. I was very impressed with how this manager, Tom Mielo, handled the situation. Hopefully future such issues will not occur. All and all, the food is excellent, the service is great, and the view is unbeatable. If they reign in their valet staff, it will be a completely well-rounded affair.

put all the glitz and glamor and this is place just boils down to an overpriced restaurant that serves average tasting food. the view from the restaurant is nice but I would not consider the dining experience romantic.

I have dined here many times and I have never had a bad experience. We always have great service and the food never disappoints. Even if you aren't able to sit by a window, there truly isn't a bad seat in the house. Definately get the crab cakes even if it's for an appetizer.

Great food, a great view, and poor service await you at this restaurant on Mt. Washington. We started our meal at 8PM and didn't finish until after midnight, having to wait an hour between courses. There was very little attention during the gaps. As the evening grew later, it was clear that the staff was much more interested in preparing for the next day than catering to their diners. We eventually even had to ask the hostess to find our server to get the check. This place could be truly great if the service were better.

I LOVE this place-- everytime I want a romantic night out in the city, I take a ride up the Duquesne Incline and eat at Monterey Bay. The view is amazing, the menu and wine selection is impressive, and the food is delicious, especially the crab cakes, which are not fried and are the best I've ever tasted. It is a little pricey, but definitely worth it-- they fly their fish in fresh daily. Love it for special occasions, big groups, and romantic nights. You definitely need a reservation and if you're late, expect to wait to be seated for a looong time, especially on the weekends.

Went here once it was bad. Went again it was still bad. Over rated-Food, ediable, but not excellent & nor extroidnary , especially for the high end prices. Sloooooooooooooow service even if their not busy, professional, but toward the not so friendly side! \r
Atmosphere is about the only thing that it has going for them.\r
\r
A lot of other places downtown that are better!

My wife and I had a wonderful evening from the service to the food to the view. My wife loves salmon and when they told her they typically serve it more on the medium to I think medium rare side she went to well done which is more her speed and loved it. She had the teriyaki style. I had the Swordfish parmesan it could not have been better. Very rich but delicious. I travel a decent bit and found the prices pretty reasonable for a high end restaurant. Another couple was also with us and one of them had the Ahi Tuna served rare. I tried a bite of the Ahi which was just as good as a great piece of sushi (if you like sushi). I?m not a desert fan but did taste my wife?s cheesecake (can?t remember what kind) and it was very good. Dinner took a while, a couple of hours but we enjoyed the evening out.

Went there on a weekend night with a client. It was pretty bare so you thought we'd get good service and food. Boy, was I wrong! We all ordered lobster bisque and we all sent it back. It was strong tasting. One of the guys said his salmon was raw and sent it back. The waiter said that's the way they prepare salmon here. I call it bait! My fish was just so-so...nothing to write home about. The prices were outrageous. Yea...you pay for the view! I will never go back there!

I took my girlfriend to Monterey Bay for the first time in December 07, We fell in love with this restaurant from the time we were shown to our table. We were seated at the widow overlooking the city, the food was so good its beyond description. The Swordfish and the blackened Mako shark has had me fantasizing about returning ever since. Service was great, the atmosphere even better. This place Im sure now is one of Pittsburgh's greatest attractions.

If you really want to have a special dinner or make a great impression on someone special to you. take em to dinner at Monterey Bay.

After the nice reviews here, and elsewhere, we decided to try Monterey Bay and see the view from Mt. Washington. The view was, indeed, very nice on a colder, clear January night. We came early, since the window views are ""first-come, first-serve."" Even at 5:06, the best tables were already taken, but we had a nice view of the sunset. Our waitress was good, although better service can definitely be found elsewhere in Pittsburgh. We ordered a seafood combo for an appetizer, which was delicious. My swordfish special was tasty, but nothing special. My husband ordered black cod, which was well-prepared and delicate, but better food can easily be had around town. Considering the bill for the two of us (with one of the cheapest bottles of wine on the list) came to $140, we think you can find much better food for less elsewhere. In short: great view, good service, good (but not great) food, too expensive.\r

Obviously, this place has great reviews so we were in Pittsburgh and had to try it. Our experience was not at all what we thought it would be. The view is beautiful, for sure, and we had a window seat to enjoy it. That was fantastic. We had a appetizer on the specials menu which was wonderful... prawns stuffed with goat cheese and wrapped in bacon... amazing. We upgraded to the lobster salad and we found it to be just... ok... and rather overpriced for what you get. On top of it, our entrees came out about 5 mins after our salads so we were rushing to eat the salad before our entrees got cold. Our entrees were just mediocre. I had tuna that was cooked well but just completely bland... a big slab of tuna with no seasoning at all. My boyfriend had shark that was just, again... eh, ok. Our server felt bad about our entrees coming out so fast so she offered to buy us dessert... which honestly, we weren't planning on having... but since that was the only thing they were offering us we took it and shared the creme brulee. It was delicious. \r
\r
I would recommend going for the view but our bill for dinner, without alcohol, was over $100 for 2 of us and I really just felt the food was... eh, ok. You can spend much less and have fantastic good elsewhere.

This restaurant is now located by the Monroeville Mall. My wife and I decided to give it a try because we had heard from friends that it was a good experience and the food delicious. The food was good, not great and the service was excellent! We did not enjoy the atmosphere at all though. We were seated in a corner booth which was not private at all. We experienced high traffic all around us. Our lasting memory of the place was good bread but horrible atmosphere for the price you pay to treat yourself. If we had a better seat that might have changed our first impression but the atmosphere felt rushed and made our dining experience less enjoyable. We have not been back since.

I took my fiancee here the night we were engaged. I didn't pop the question at the restaurant, but I easily could have! What a classy place and amazing wait staff! The views are excellent as well. However, the absolute best part of the MBFG is the amazing crab cakes...they are a MUST have!!! \r
\r
I highly reccomend! Oh, and free dessert to celebrate our special night! (Thanks MBFG!)\r

Pros: INCREDIBLE crab cakes, great service, very generous (gave us free dessert for special night)

Cons: Price can be slightly high, kind of noisy, but not intolerable

Great food, great service, great view! I highly recommend this place for the best dining experience in town!

Monterey bay has great food and good service (but not top noch). my fish/seafood is always well prepared. Their wine list is pretty good. Traditional decor. Get the crab cakes.

Showing up on a Monday evening after 8 pm, who knew we would need a reservation, but thankfully another couple didn't show so we slipped into their spot. What a great view of the city, and even though the hostess was less than friendly, our server, Sherrie, was fantastic. She explained all the specials for the evening and even showed us some of them as she brought them out for other customers. My boyfriend chose the crab stuffed sea scallops, while I had the Barramundi...outstanding! Sherrie highly recommended it. As an appetizer, we tried the combo platter, which included a fabulous crab cake, a skewer of ahi tuna, swordfish and salmon...the ahi was to die for...and 2 cajun shrimp...very spicy. To end the meal; however, you cannot miss the Steaming Chocolate Latte...it's warm chocolate cake souffle in a coffee cup covered with whipped cream and lightly dusted with cinnamon. Three chocolate sticks made to look like steam are coming out the top...it just takes your breath away...but if you don't like chocolate...what's wrong with you? The chocolate truffle cake was okay, but nothing special. The atmosphere, while a bit noisy was very nice. They were very busy so we weren't surprised by the noisy atmosphere. The only problem with the whole evening was waiting for cabs...hey, Pittsburgh, where are the cabs? You have to call for cabs?

wow, what a disappointment. Went back to pittsburgh on a visit, and we went up to Monterey Bay to see how it was. The decor is kitschy at best-- with weird gigantic palm tree paintings adorning the fixtures leading to the lights, and dirty windows in the tiny waiting area. \r
\r
The server announced she was college student, and then went through the endless litany of specials. curiously, the menu's insane array of fish were all dressed the same five or six ways. \r
\r
to say our service was attentive would be an understatement. we were interrupted constantly. ""how is your meal? very good."" ""you enjoying everything? very good."" It became a game to see if we could actually chew without an interruption. \r
\r
curiously enough though, when it came time for the after dinner coffee-- THEN we were left alone for 20 mminutes, until we almost just asked for the bill and said the heck with the coffee. \r
\r
The dinner arrived early, much to everyone's surprise, including our server. so we had to rush our appetizers. the portions were of the mammoth size normally found at places like the olive garden. and while the food wasn't bad, it wasn't terribly special either for the price. the best thing I ate was the sashimi. it was so fresh. but it was raw so i can't judge the cuisine based on that. \r
\r
believe me, we really wanted to enjoy the experience. it had been recommended to us. But it just had this vibe where people who work at t.g.i. friday's the day before are now working in a four star place. it felt so amateurish. and judging by the complaints we heard in the elevator back to street level, we weren't the only ones who felt that way.\r
\r
there are better places on mt. washington to go for the food. not to mentiont he view. skip this one.

I am a travel agent and tour guide and whenever I have guests in from out of town, we always begin at sunset with a drink in the bar. A killer view especially if there is a game and they have fireworks. The bar is also a great alternative for dinner if the window seats are all taken upstairs - the only caveat being Pittsburgh still allows smoking in their bars!\r
\r
In all the years I have gone here, I have always enjoyed the food and wine and think the prices are right on for fresh-daily fish served 30+ different ways plus this includes soup and salad and sides. Anyone who complains about the prices obviously doesn't fine dine very often or hasn't ever left Pittsburgh. $140 for dinner AND drinks for 4 people?! - that's a bargain for fresh seafood - go back to Red Lobster if you want hushpuppies and ""sea stix"".\r
\r
The aspect of the menu I enjoy the most is not only are there many fresh daily choices of fish but you can mix and match any preparation. My favorite by far is the blackened sesame seeds with soy butter with almost any fish choice. And for those that are not seafood fans, they have a few delicious non-fish options too. The wait staff is consistently kind and helpful to a fault - once or twice I have had to tell the younger ones to just relax and let us just enjoy our meal because they were too attentive. Honestly, that is my only criticism.\r
\r
I would chose Monterey Bay without any hesitation for any occasion or just a great scenic place to meet for cocktails as a great way to start the evening.

I took my father here when he visited for the first time. Firstly, the waitress forgot our drinks, after we sat there for 15 minutes without any service. We were seated next to the kitchen, even though I made reservations 3 days prior. When our food was brought, it was served to us cold. They offered us a dessert for our troubles, but why would we subject ourselves to further disappointment?! Avoid this place. Prices are high, parking can be difficult to find if you don't want to pay for valet, and the food is poor. Many other great restaurants in the Pittsburgh area. I'd rather go to Mitchell's Fish Market for much better food at a better price.

The four of us had really high hopes for the Fish Grotto. Sadly, the best part of the meal was the service. Followed by the Mango Cosmopolitan. Each fillet of fish was hidden underneath a pile of various garnishes which easily overpowered the delicate flavors of the fish. We ordered the Black Cod Sale Fish, Grouper, and both versions listed under Boston Scrod. The Grouper was the worst as far as being able to find the fillet under the garnish. With the average dish being $22+ (some as much as $30) and our tab just over $130 (with cocktails) for four people, I'd have to say that we were all a little underwhelmed with the experience. The view is amazing, though. If you ride the incline up to Mt. Washington, turn right and head up the hill when you leave the station. Be sure to take a camera.

Forget the national chains in town. If you want upscale seafood, head to MB Fish Grotto. The food is excellent and the view is classic 'Burgh. If you've got clients in town, this is the place to take them. My only issue with the place is the dated feel of the dining room decor. Hopefully, they'll remodel soon to an interior that suits the impeccable food and service found here on a nightly basis.

On a recent trip to Pittsburgh, a group of 10 of us dined here. I cannot say enough good things. The food was fantastic, the service was wonderful, and the view was spectacular, there's not a bad seat in the place. The price was not bad either for this quality of restaurant. If I ever get back to Pitt, this will be my first dining spot.

This restaurant is five star, all the way. The dining area is at the top of a high rise building, and the night view of Pittsburgh alone from high atop Mt. Washington is worth the price of dinner. Dinners ARE fairly pricey here, but very delicious and elegantly served.

My son took me here for Mother's Day one year, and he does not enjoy fish. He was able to order an excellent Chicken Vincenzo and I had the Seafood Coquille.

Monterey Bay knowledgable, friendly staff serves up wonderful food in a romantic setting with some of the most breath taking views of the city. From start to finish, it was one of the best meals I've ever had.

My boyfriend oreder the ahi tuna and I got the crabcakes. Being from southern Maryland, I've had a lot of crabcakes in my time. Monterey Bay's were the best, hands down.

I highly recommend this restaurant. It's worth every penny.

This is by far the best restaurant in Pittsburgh. Everything about Monterrey Bay is superb: food, service, ambience, view, romantic dining, etc. They even have an excellent martini menu. In my opinion, for the quality of food that is served, I think that the price is very reasonable; the portions are generous; side dishes and salad are included. If you like seafood, try the crab cakes; they are wonderful. If you don't like seafood, the filet stuffed with spinach and feta cheese is SUPERB!!

Fantastic view, great fish and seafood!

Their crabcakes are wonderful, probably the best I've ever had except for one other restaurant in Maryland. And I lived in New England for many years! Reading some other reviews, I could not believe some people were complaining about the crabcakes: they must like their crabcakes with fake crab and deep-fried for 30 minutes :-)

Two tips:
- If you want a table near the window to admire the fantastic view, come in early (around 5pm on Saturday or earlier). They give the best tables on a first come first serve basis.
- If you want to save a couple dollars on valet parking and can walk a block or two, there is usually parking available in the side street next to the restaurant.

I'd heard great things about this place and was thrilled when we were invited to dine there (not on our tab!).

Bottom line, the food's nothing special. Okay they have a billion types of fish there, but if you don't prepare them in a way that tastes good, what good is it? There were 8 people in our group, 7 different dishes. 4 of us ended up picking at our food. 2 of the remaining 4 in our party ate theirs, but described as ""just okay"". The two people who ordered the crab cakes, which the server touted as ""their specialty"", didn't even make it through half of one. The mixed vegetables looked like they were from one of those frozen mixes.

The view is beautiful, but you could have seen that view on the Duquesne Incline for $1.75. Save your money, this place just isn't worth all the hype.

During my numerous trips to this fantastic restaurant I have never been dissappointed. From the crab cakes to the wine list we are always happy to eat here. The great part with Monterey is if you are not a big fish & seafood eater there steaks are out of this world. Service has always been top notch. Please enjoy this resteraunt the way may family and freinds do.

The food was great, the view was great, and the service was excellent. I have to add that I went to this restaurant on the second day after I quit smoking, so I was PRETTY tense. However, the combination of the view, the food, and the pleasant service put me at ease and I left the restaurant in a less frazzled condition than when I walked in. The only con- I would recommend asking someone else to take you to this restaurant for dinner (it's a bit pricey) so you can enjoy the great food and view without the wallet drain.

I usually hate places like these....tourist traps cashing in on a view or a local landmark. Food is usually boring and bad, service is condescending, and prices are way too high.

I went to Monterey..reluctantly. I was wrong, very wrong. Our lovely waitress was lovely and authentic...and good. She was attentive, knew her product, and got help when we asked about the wine...she gets an A+.

I had ahi tuna...wonderfully prepared and cooked perfectly. My wife had sole which she loved. Appetizers were very good, salad good, and desserts were quite good.

Here is a little secret...the best bar in Pgh in located here. well priced wine and the perfect view of the city.

I used to hate it when I was wrong...not anymore

RESERVATIONS!
Dinner for just the two of us or with a large group of friends - it's the best at Monterey Bay. We always have had a great table (what could be bad when you're w/ whom you enjoy!) The shrimp appetizer melts in your mouth and both the Rodi salmon & crab cakes are addicting. The wines are sure to please every taste. I'll have to get back to you on the desserts - so far they are all my favorites.

The hostess was extremely rude, the ambience was incredibly stuffy, but surreally comical due to the obscenely inappropriate teal vests of the staff. The food was good, but nothing I haven't tasted elsewhere in the city. There are many better places to dine with both the view, cuisine, and courtesy that would be expected.
