I was visiting friends in Philly and a group of us decided to eat here. I'm a simple statement guy, that said, it was amazing! I'm definitely going back there next time I visit. What a great place!

I remember Dmitri's from the early days and it was very good. A recent visit revealed that it is less than a shadow of its former self. I can honestly say that of hundreds of meals eaten in dozen's of Philly restaurants, this just might have been the worst. I've never been served blander food -- nothing had any taste to it. The service was poor and the noise level is ridiculous, though frankly I could tolerate either of those if the food were decent. Definitely cross this one off your list -- it's a complete waste.

We live in the neighborhood and usually love this restaurant. After our experience on Saturday night I would be embarrassed to recommend Dmitri's to anyone. The hostess was beyond rude from the moment we walked in. I understand it was a busy night but it is unacceptable to pass this on to paying customers. To top it off, both of the bathrooms were out of order! When we asked about the situation, we were told to go across the street to use the bar's restroom. I'm pretty sure a restaurant cannot be open without working bathrooms. Finally, after we were rushed through dinner we were told that we had to leave immediately upon finishing our last sips of wine. The food is not nearly good enough to be treated like this.

My favorite restaurant in Philadelphia! Whenever hubby and I have a date night, we almost always go to Dmitri's. They have the best hummus in the city. Wonderful fresh fish. Try the small dishes and share because it's all good!

My boyfriend lived in Philly years ago and used to love Dimitri's so after talking about going for so long we had a friend leaving town so we all went last night. The place had 3 tables in it that were full-all the rest wide open (it was 7:30). There were 3 of us and they put us at a 2 top with 3 chairs. We nicely asked if we could move and they said it was against their policy. SO the 3 of us who ordered 8 items off the menu sat with out knee's banging each other. The bread is served with oil-with barely any spices. I asked the server for butter. Oh no. They do not do that. I practically begged her. She acted like I asked her for her kidney. The food was average at best. You cannot even order app's and then order dinner a few min after ordering them. The order must be done at once. They are so mean and nasty. Why anyone would want to tip them is beyond my understanding. I will never go back.

Pros: BYOB

Cons: Everything.

I had eaten before at this restaurant and had a memorable experience. But, when we went as a group of six, the staff made every effort to make us uncomfortable at a small table for 4 with no reasonable attempt to accommodate our request for more comfortable seating. So, we took our business elsewhere.

I lived in Philadelphia about 10 years ago and loved Dmitris. It was always a long wait but the food was great and service good. I was back in town for a 15th year college reunion and decided to reminisce by coming here again on a MONDAY night for a good friend's birthday celebration. When I arrived at 6:30pm - the restaurant had many empty seats. We were a party of 5 but only 3 of us arrived early. We were seated immediately. The rest of the party came about 20 minutes later. After 5 minutes - our waitress came over with an irritated "Is the rest of your party coming soon?" After another 5 minutes - they basically said very rudely "Where are they?" Meanwhile - there were still MANY empty tables (another table of 5 open) - I looked and there was nobody waiting. When the rest of the party arrived, the waitress came over immediately to announce the specials of the day before my brother's butt touch his seat! They're undercurrent was still hostile at best. The restaurant did not fill up until 30 minutes after our entire party arrived and no more than 2 people were waiting at a time to be seated the entire time we were there. I felt that the waitresses were rude and acted like it was some kind of sacred privilege to eat at Dmitris. To add insult to injury - the food was NOT the way I remembered it. The grilled octopus was dry and did not taste fresh. The rest of the dishes were okay-good but not spectacular. I feel that Dmitris is resting on its previous laurels. I read a few yelp reviews and many complained about the rude waitstaff. I will not patronized this establishment again and informed my Philly friends and family of the same. This is America and who wants to pay to eat at a snooty mediocre place?

I love their Greek Salads and Steamed clams and I love sitting at the very small bar in front of the Cooks station. At the Cooks station I watch in anticipation for my meals.

Dmitri's has a byo and cash only policy and it is such a small place.

There's always a line of people waiting either for a table or a seat at the bar. You must experience this place once.

Dmitri's was my all time favorite restaurant in Philadelphia. I've been dining there since the beginning (16 yrs?) when the waitresses knew your name and were known for their great style. On our last visit, we were sat next to another couple with, literally 1 inch between tables. there was no way that you could have a conversation without them knowing every detail. It was uncomfortable and we decided to move the table 2 inches away, I'm not exaggerating. We didn't think it would be a problem since there was about 6 ft of empty space to our right. Anyway, the waitress shoved the table back and scalded us saying "you are not allowed to just move tables around"!. After all those years of great food, its sad to think they could treat customes like that. All I can say is "goodbye Dmitri's" there are a million great places in the city, we wont be going back!

We're going to Dmitri's Queen Village location (the other is at 23rd & Pine) for dinner tonight. We've probably been there more than most restaurants in Philadelphia and I'd venture to say it's an institution for those who love Greek seafood. Dmitri's has a byo and cash only policy, and usually is guaranteed to reduce your hearing capacity. The tables are close together and invariably you strike up a conversation with the people sitting next to you. For me, that's a plus.

The food is excellent with selections such as wonderful grilled octopus, excellent mussels prepared with lots of vegetables ( a different preparation to be sure, but really, really good), the ubiquitous Greek salad, something we almost always order, terrific grilled vegetables, lots of different fish platters, and in summer the most wonderful soft-shelled crab.

Dmitri's deserves its accolades. There's always a line of people waiting either for a table or a seat at the bar (where there's a bit less noise and you can converse with the cooks) and it's best to go early. If you stick to the regular menu and don't order any of the specials, you can expect your bill to be under $50 a couple.

Saturday, July 19th. Two working stiffs from downtown out looking for a meal with value. Professional service with seamless teamwork. We did the requisite visit to the corner tavern across the street for a local beer and ap an the hostess came to our table there to announce we could join them for dinner. Once seated in tight quarters we enjoyed whole Striped Bass and Blue Fish the way they do it best - fresh, plain, and hot. This simple preparation only works with excellent quality seafood so it was a delight to see a kitchen team do it perfectly in the midst of the Saturday Night crush. And all created in a kitchen space that might be 20' x 6'.
Follow up service on every part of our meal was flawless.

When we first moved to Philly Dmitri's got rave reviews from everyone we talked to so we tried it out for ourselves. We were thoroughly disappointed. I usually find BYOs charming even if the seating is a little tight. However, we felt like sardines at Dmitris. We were so close to the couple next to us that we might as well have merged our tables. It made an otherwise romantic restaurant feel awkward and uncomfortable. The service was average at best. Because of the way the tables were crammed in the waitress could barely get to us to serve our food and open our wine. It put both my husband and I in a bad enough mood that even the delicious food couldn't pull us out of it. So, yes, the food was great. But was it worth it? I've been to many better BYOs in Philly. I'd skip it.

We have lived in the area for two years and without a doubt, this is our favorite place. Not expensive, not fancy but just great food in a very friendly atmosphere. Go during the week for an easier time in getting a table or be prepared to wait or sit at the counter.
The fish is fresh and well prepared and the vegetables are fantastic. Try the soft shells if available! You won;t be disappointed!

Best in town, one of my favorites. I have been going to Dimitri's for over 10 years, I can go over a month not going, however every time I return, it never changes or disappoints me. If you don't mind the wait it is worth it.

I've been to the other Dimitris in Rittenhouse several times and have never been disappointed. Last night however, I was thoroughly unimpressed with the food.

We got the octopus appetizer, which was pretty good. Then our "platters" came. I had the lamb and my date had the scallops. While the meats were fairly tasty, each platter came with rice and greens. The rice was so disappointing, obviously an afterthought. It literally tasted like cafeteria rice. I'm not exaggerating when I say that any rice-in-a-box you can get at a supermarket would have been far better. And the greens were soggy and uninspired, just laying there. Not even sauteed in garlic or anything, it just seemed like they had been steamed and thrown on the plate.

I expect everything on my plate to be somewhat tasty, interesting, or inventive. What I got was completely run of the mill, uninspired and pedestrian. It seems as though the chefs at Dimitris have stopped trying, or stopped caring. I would never let sides like that leave my kitchen, and I'm not even a chef.

Service was good, and the atmosphere was nice.

I have never been dissappointed with any of the meals I've had at Dmitri's. Sure, it's not fine dining, but it's a BYO and the food is reasonably priced and delicious! I always share the enormous order of grilled vegetables with the rest of our party. The scampi is excellent. The grilled pita is a nice touch that goes great with the baba ganoush. I wish, though, that they had more to offer in terms of specials. It always seems to be tilapia served in a white wine and lemon sauce. Summer time is my fave at Dmitri's when you can have their tomato and mozzerella salad. Desserts are ok- a little bit slapped together. But the female servers are always on top of things. They move quickly and get your food to you in a timely manner.

I had been hearing rave reviews about Dmitris since I moved to Philadelphia, so I was a little nervious it wouldn't live up to the hype. Thankfully, it did! The group of 6 I was with didn't wait too long (weekends during the summer....gotta love how everyone is "down the shore"). The food was delicious and so inexpensive. The service was extremely friendly and I can't wait to go back again.

This review is in response to the review below (psychedelicious). Every restaurant has the misfortune of serving ignorant people such as yourselves. Dumb comment #1 : "Chinese line cooks are right there at the door" Wow, that's pretty pathetic considering that you can rate a restaurant fairly. The guys behind the line are Loatian, not Chinese you idiot. Go dine in any Michelin 3 or 4 star restaurant and you will find many different nationalities in the kitchen. I can't believe that I have to explain that to someone who "rates restaurants". The size of the restaurant is tiny, and the preparations are simple. Dmitri's has always had some of the freshest fish available. SIMPLE good seafood, not a lot of ingredients and intense preparations like a larger, heavier staffed restaurant that is more expensive. Dumb comment #2: "Dmitri's serves squid and calls it octopus" THEY SERVE BOTH ! The squid is grilled in larger pieces, and the octopus in smaller pieces. It doesn't take much to see and taste the difference, and I have never seen or heard that complaint before. On top of that you insult the server, the person that is serving you food and trying to make your dining experience as enjoyable as they can. How disrespectful you are ! I do not work for the restauraunt, but I have eaten there forever. I've known some of the servers for years. Unfortunately, I also had the misfortune of trying to enjoy my meal sitting across from you. They clean the tables properly, and get you fresh silverware. LIKE EVERY RESTAURANT SHOULD ! And you said so yourself that she told you to just ask for some fresh silverware. Don't just grab it from another table like an a$$. WHAT IS THERE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT !!?? She was offerieng help. It is loud there and super busy almost all the time unfortunately but that's how it always has been, but the food is good and fresh. I really hope that I don't see you disrespectful people there again.

I hate to be so harsh, but Dmitri's just plain sucked. I can rate a restaurant fairly, based on it's merits, looking past bad service blah blah blah.

Dmitri's is a straight-up ripoff. Firtstly it is about as Greek as McDonalds is French (French Fries, y'know). Chinese line cooks are right there when you walk through the door because guess what? Dmitris is actually a cheap and nasty diner. The open kitchen isn't even a real kitchen... it's just a sandwich station with a tiny little grill, such as you'd find at a food court in a second-tier suburban mall. And the kitchen is loud, not a good thing is such a small restaurant with no decor, no music, nothing at all to create any ambiance whatsoever.

Still, this is Philly so sometimes one looks past all that if the food is good. It is not. Worse still, they actually lie to you. Dmitri's serves squid and calls it octopus. I've eaten so much squid and octopus in my life, nobody should ever try and pass squid off to me as being octopus. At Dmitri, our waitress "swears to god that's octopus" so I ask... why no tentacles, why no suction cups? She responds "we remove the tentacles before cooking the octopus". OK, you're fired! She?s probably never even seen octopus.

Besides that stupid argument, this is a restaurant where they really do grab you silverware? and place it right on the tabletop. No tablecloth, no paper... just the dirty rag they wiped with, and formica. Nasty. My wife grabbed some new silverware from a neighboring table? and guess what? Our waitress asks: I don't understand what the problem is. Just ask for fresh silverware.

That's when we left. Paid for the salad. never going back. Horrible.

Here's the deal. Dmitri's is not Le Bec Fin or Suzanna Foo! It's a little local mom-and-pop restaurant. The close quarters and loud conversation is part of the experience. Instead of fighting it we usually say hi to our close dining neighbors and break the ice so there's no awkward moments. The food is simple and not over seasoned so that you can enjoy the flavor of the actual food. Some people aren't used to this since we live in the world of over seasoned microwave meals. The food is healthy and tasty. The prices are totally reasonable for city living. Personally I don't eat the pasta cause the fish, apps and salads are way better in my opinion. You can get pasta anywhere. The food is served family style, so order in courses if that's what you want. Remember that they get very busy, especially on the weekends, so you may feel rushed. If you are looking to dine for 3 hours you might want to go somewhere else on Saturday night. The most important thing when you go out is to know where you're going and what to expect and you won't be disappointed. Choose a restaurant according to what you want that night, don't try to change a restaurant. Just like in relationships you will only feel Jaded and Highly Disappointed in the end. With lower check amounts and no liquor on the bill waiters need to flip tables more throughout the night to make money, so be considerate and when you're done give the next customers (who are probably anxious to sit and eat) the table.

Pros: Great food, great price

Cons: you may wait, it can get loud

Waited 20 minutes. Fine. Seated. Wine brought to table. The wait began. Reminded host we hadn't been waited on. 25 minutes lates the server arrived stating she hadn't seen us. Our table aligned with the bar area where she had clients seated. I saw her. We were out of her sight range being 10 feet away.

Food was average. Service was horrible. Menu hasn't changed in years.

Go to Effie's, Pine and Quince Streets

I have eaten at Dmitris for a few years now and have never had a bad experience! I love everything Ive had there! The smelts and the hummus are amazing! Ive never heard a bad review until I looked on here.. I guess to those people who didnt enjoy it unique and cozy atmosphere..restaurants like sizzlers or wherever are where you should keep going. I have always had nice waitresses.. Sure its a small restaurant, but the food makes up for it! Bring a nice bottle of wine and sit at at the bar with friends and watch the chefs in action! Incredible!

I read so many good reviews of this place that I decided to try it. I was totally disappointed. I got their special, a grilled whole red snapper, which was probably the BLANDEST fish I've ever had. It was served with bland kale (who serves kale of all veggies?) and cheap, flavorless rice. Our bill for 2 came to $60. A total rip off for what you get, plus you are literally sitting elbow to elbow with strangers. If you're looking for a good seafood byo, I'd suggest Little Fish instead.

Wow, this place stunk! We went on a recommendation of a ?friend.? Apparently we forgot what HORRIBLE taste he has. We were seated right away which is great but were seated at a 4 top with two of the seats already taken by another couple. To be fair, it wasn't a true 4-top, there was about a quarter of an inch between the two tables. Guess it may have been more fun to sit next to people we actually knew though we don't plan to go back, we would never put our friends through such torture! Our waitress was quite a peach which was a plus. Instead of feigning interest in our happiness, our bratty brunette would slam food on the table and walk away, sometimes without a word. She couldn't possibly have to wonder why her tip was so small. It was just about as abysmal as her personality. A record low for me and it felt great. But who cares about that, right? After all, I go out to dinner for the food! So...the food? Wow, if bland was an art form this place would be the award winners. Everything I ate turned to blah. We began with the highly touted scampi which both looked and tasted as though it'd been made a day or two prior. Chew-chew-chewy. Just awful. I?ve had better seafood at Sizzler. The citrus salad was swimming in dressing, it was drenched and wasn't that good to begin with, unless you enjoy bitterness topped with canned fruit. The scallops were charred and thus tasted like cancer. No thanks. Oh wait, I get to have scallops served with Uncle Ben's rice and flat tasteless greens? Yum! How cheap can you be? A hot dog bun would?ve been a more exciting side. The grilled squid was equally unimpressive. Chewy and Charred is not my idea of a good meal. The absolute best part of our night was the wine we brought ourselves. Without the wine the night would have been a total loss. Skip it. You've been warned. Try Azure instead. The Seitan Tips are phenomenal.

Defintiely one of my favorite restaurants in the city. Although it is small, the food makes up for the lack of space! Great hummus and there is a shrimp dish that's amazing! Great date spot if you can get a table, although it is a bit noisy.

Food is great here, though we didn't care for the grilled octopus. We almost always have to wait when we go here, but there's a little bar right across the street where you can grab a beer. The only thing I really don't like about dmitri's is that the tables are practically on top of each other, so you feel like you're listening to the conversations of a hundred strangers while you're talking to your date.

After hearing rave reviews from numerous aquaintences and friends my boyfriend and I finally went to Dmitri's this past Monday evening to celebrate his birthday. I knew the space was small and the decor spare, but was expecting delicious food. Dmitri's dissappointed in the most important area, the food. Our server left us sitting there for ages before she stopped over to take our order. The hummus was just ok, while the scampi was excellent, for the appetizers. The entrees, however were not up to par. My fried calamari was absolutely bland and dry, thank god for the bit of lemon I was given, the only thing that lent any flavoring to it. The sides were laughable as well, tasteless rice and equally unappetizing steamed greens. My boyfriend was none to happy with his lamb either. The same wretched sides and some fair slices of lamb. Our waitress was so rude as to pick up my boyfriend's appetizer plate during the beginning of the meal and tilt it so the fork fell off. All these negatives combined with the crammed atmosphere, a table of three less than a half inch away, make this one restaurant I will not be returning to. Over rated

Many of the recent postings complain about the service. While the food is phenomenal and more than reasonable here, I must agree. Servers are a bit rude...I would even go so far as to say unaccomodating. Regardless, the food shines. Excellent hummus, the squid is some of the best in the city, and the Greek salad is truly Greek. Grab a bottle of wine, ignore the servers, and enjoy some cheap and tasty bites.

It's not that the food isn't great because we all know it is, but this androgenous wait staff has attitude. There are so many rules: cash only, byob, strict with hours, no reservations, no smoking, the list goes on and on. I thought I knew the commandments of Dmitri's, but during a previous visit I learned a few more. I hadn't eaten all day and was craving some of Dmitri's sweet eats to take out on my way to an important business meeting. Even though I called before opening time and a server answered the phone, she refused to take my order. Finally when my take-out order was ready, I was informed they had no plastic forks or knives and my plastic bag contained no napkins. So why even offer take-out if you can't bring it anywhere? To make matters worse, the bag was missing items that I ordered and paid for.

Whoever claims that this place is overrated is nuts. The food is consistently delicious, what more do you want? The hummus, scampi, calamari, and octopus are the best to be found in the city, and perhaps beyond. The wait can be long, although I really don't think I have ever waited more than an hour for a table. If it is, suck it up, it is worth it.

didn't have to wait due to weather-too small/loud-no overweight person could pass thru the tables. Service good, food maybe average-sooo bland. Chefs misssed cooking 101 basics class. Poeple like the food maybe because after waiting 2 hours you are starved and also have had enough alcohol to kill your taste buds while waiting at the dumpy bar across the street. Pricey for no flare/unflavorful food.

What the deuce -- this is a Greek restaurant...? The cooks were Chinese, the waitresses American, and the food anything but Greek. People who think this is the real deal don't know the score (I'm Greek). What is 'Greek blue fish...?' And the 'Greek salad' was an overpiced bowl of mostly cucumbers.... The squid tasted like diner food and was a meager un-Greek (measly) portion. The greens that came with the entrees were also unauthentic. This place is OVERRATED!

DMITRIS STARTED THE BYOB REVIVAL AND HAS MASTERED IT.
THE PITA BREAD WITH OLIVE OIL STARTS YOU OFF RIGHT. GET A SIDE OF HUMMUS FOR ADDED DIPPING PLEASURE.
THE FISH OF THE DAY IS ALWAYS THE FRESHEST AND YOU CAN NEVER GO WRONG WITH THE BLUEFISH AND PASTA WHICH HOLDS UP WELL AS A NEXT DAY LEFTOVER.
THE SCALLOPS AND SHRIMP ARE ALWAYS FRESH AND TENDER AND ARE OFTEN PAIRED WITH GREAT RICE AND ASIAN GREENS.
THE WAITSTAFF IS HURRIED BUT NEVER RUDE.
GO EARLY, GET YOUR NAME IN AND HAVE A FEW BEERS AT NEW WAVE WHILE THE HOSTESS IS CHILLING YOUR WINE; DON'T WORRY SHE'LL FIND YOU.
IF YOU GET THERE TOO LATE AND CAN'T WAIT 2 HOURS NEW WAVE HAS A GREAT MENU, BUT GET BACK TO DMITIRIS TO FIND WHAT YOU'RE MISSING.

Dmitri's is what it is ! If you want 5 star service you'll have to go somewhere else... and pay A LOT more. Dmitri's is a tiny, crowded, inexpensive, BYOB. They don't make any money on drinks so they must turn over tables to make money ! It's not Le Bec Fin, nor is it trying to be. The food there is very tasty, the portions large. Been there about 10 times and love it. It wouldn't be so packed if it wasn't consistently very very good. Try sitting at the bar and getting 4 or 5 appitizers instead of meals - esp Hummus!

After anticipating going to Dmitri, I was very dissappointed. Besides poor service, everything tasted like char. The hummus was good, the squid was chewy and charred, same for the lamb. The side dishes and food seemed very unimaginative. We could not understand why the restaurant is always busy, maybe we were there on an off nite.

Can't understand the bad reviews. I LOVE Dmitris -- the octopus is to die for, and the fried squid is the best I've ever tasted. The lamb, whole grilled fish, and grilled pita are beyond wonderful. The only thing I've ever had and not liked is the grilled scallops, but then it's hard to get tasty scallops outside of New England anyway. They DO get busy, but I've never had rude service there. A tip: if you can possibly get there before 7 on a weekday, you shouldn't have to wait. Can't beat the price. Highly recommended.

The octopus was tremendous, bass and talpia great, lamb seemed precooked, arriving cool, tough and gamey. When we asked for the manger to complain, we were told that that was the manager who asked us to leave. Unbelievable! I will never be back!
