From the first experience I had with Van's Salon years ago I have admired the tremendous talent and work ethic of Diane & her fabulous staff. I am always warmly greeted by name and given the most professional care from the brillliantly organized front desk to the finest massages, pedicures, facials and other services. In the infrequent event that any difficulty has arisen Diane and her staff listen, care, and make it right. I always feel valued, respected, and delighted with my superb color and cuts, and other services. My daughter's entire wedding party had their hair and makeup done by Diane & her staff. We were welcomed early that morning with tremendous caring. Right on time our party emerged beautifully done & ready for a wonderful day. The same daughter now brings her daughter for her baby cuts. Simply put, we all love Diane and her very special salon.

Chelsea always gets my hair color perfect and cuts my hair to complement my curly/wavy hair. It's never looked better and my hair is in great condition.

Simply outstanding! this place is known for hair color! My hair has never been so rich and smooth! They have several stylist with aveda institute education and the hair color is the best I have ever tried. I also got a facial with a express pedicure and felt so relaxed. Very professional and services were what I expected for an Aveda lifestyle salon and spa! Just WOW!

Worst salon I have ever been to. I got highlights and I still have 1/2 inch of root. Everything is so rushed and by the way my highlights are a tint of orange. I would never recommend this salon. Very Fake. It seems wonderful when you walk in but just wait until after you get your hair done. Trust me.

Perhaps "MB W" and "Anonymous", below, are confused. I know mix-ups can happen and mistakes can be made (by anyone, including the staff at Vans or any other salon.) However, the Van's Staff is wonderfully kind, extremely helpful and the owner is out of this world! She is knowledgeable, fair, gracious and always professional. As far as the manager - she is a very trustworthy lady. I have been going to Vans since it opened and never experienced or witnessed either the owner or manager addressing any customer in a disrespectful manner. Years ago, I received a less-than flattering cut from one of their former stylists (who didn't last very long). The manager immediately brought it to the attention of the owner. I received a personal call from the owner who not only apologized but fixed my hair, gave me a full credit for my cut, and provided me with a complimentary spa service. Don't tell me they don't care or they don't stand behind their product or that they are rude - nothing could be further from the truth. They know how to compensate for the rare mishaps. Keep up the great service Vans!!

Oh, and salon gossip is half of the fun - If you can't handle it, I suggest you start going to a barber.

This is your third or fourth review of this salon. Why keep going if you dislike it so much? It seems to me you have a beef about this talented salon. Maybe you are another owner or somehow jealous. You just do not make sense.
If you do not like it just go to some other second class salon in town. Van Salon and Spa has a great reputation for hiring Master cutters from Aveda institutes and educated estititions from Aveda master educators. I love this place and will not trust anyone else in town with my skin or hair! Keep up the good work Vans!! I should know, I do live in town! You, debatable....

I was at the Vans Salon in Sewickley a couple weeks ago. I live just a few blocks from this salon and every time I go I'm disappointed. This salon is more expensive than other Aveda salons in other cities and the service doesn't compare to what I've experienced at other Aveda salons throughout the country. I'm fine paying extra money for good service, but every time I leave the Vans Salon I feel my hair and or makeup don't look good and I paid too much money for the service I received. This salon is located near my home, so I keep going back because it is convenient; however, each time I leave I'm more disappointed than the previous time.

I've been to Aveda salons around the country and this salon is top notch! Warm welcoming, wonderful atmosphere and fabulous decor! But what really impressed me is the talent that they have!! Several stylist are from the Aveda insitutes and I never had a more glowing shine to my color!!! Also, I had several spa services on my next trip and the esthititan was very knowledgeable and experienced. I would recommend this salon and spa not only for me but for men as well, I did see a great men's cut when I was there!

I made an appointment by phone several weeks in advance for a pre-wedding bikini wax. When I arrived, they couldn't find my appointment. That happens, so I was patient as they tried to fit me in. The technician spent much of the time trying to sell me various products, especially the application of mink eyelashes (for a mere $395). Then she slapped wax on my eyebrows, even though I twice said that I was only getting a bikini wax. I was charged for it anyway, of course. As I paid a hefty bill and left, I was given a small bottle of soap for my "troubles". It wasn't worth the hassle.

When I moved back to the area I was thrilled that there was an Aveda Salon blocks from where I lived. I have lived all over the country and even in the most backward town, if there was an Aveda Salon I knew I was going to get a fantastic cut and wax. Now I would hardly call Sewickley backward, but this salon sure is.

Every Aveda salon I have ever been to, offers a refreshment upon arrival, scalp massage, and hip cuts; not so here. The front desk staff was dismissive every time I went in; Rather than a "Hello and welcome" they just stare at you until you take hold of directing the conversation. I guess I didn't register as part of the perceived Sewickley glitterati, which is funny given that the last time I checked, that's the Ohio river out there, not the Pacific Ocean. Seriously, The salon I sadly left in L.A because I was moving back here never gave attitude, and really, the service was equal to and sometimes superseded the service at other swank salons on Sunset. But I digress.

I really wanted to stick it out. I started with one stylist who was so jittery and rough I couldn't help but wonder if she was on something. I'm not kidding, she kept whacking my head with her paddle brush as she was attempting a blow out. And really, I didn't want to hear about her abusive boyfriend and random nasty salon employee gossip. Stupidly, I gave her two chances, thinking maybe the first time was a fluke.

So I moved on to a new stylist. Sheesh! Who is this salon hiring? Yet another wacko spilling all sorts of nasty stuff about her life and styling me like a 45 year old mom from the 80's.

I thought Aveda stylists received regular training around the country to keep them up to date on new techniques? Whenever my stylists (even in little old Patterson, CA) came back from training the results were always exciting. Why do the ladies at Van's seem like they're stuck in the Aqua Net decade?

And I have never had products pushed down my throat anywhere like I have at Van's. Just a completely unsophisticated and physically painful experience.

When I called for pricing of a touch up foil and a trim, I was told that foils were around 45 and a haircut was about 35. I was happy, as I am accustomed to paying well over 100 for the same service where I just moved from.

I arrived early and had to wait quite awhile for my stylist. I was never offered a drink or anything. She was professional, but didn't really listen to my concerns and in the end, I was satisfied with my foil, not elated.

My stylist followed me downstairs and walked me up and down the shelves of hair products picking out things I "absolutely needed" for my hair...a little tube of this for 24 and a bottle of this for 45... yikes. I ended up with a few things for around 30.

My stylist went back upstairs and when I went to pay, I felt as if the manager was a multilevel marketer for the makeup line?! I did need some blush, so I let her walk me over there and show me the blushes, but thought twice about it and told her I was not buying any that day and left the blush on the makeup counter.

We proceeded back to the register, and when she told me the total, I was suprised...$203? Was I doing my math wrong? I assumed my foil was around 45 and the haircut 35, coming in around 80-90. I bought some hair product for 30...how in the world did I get to $200? When I inquired, my foil ended up being $135, (almost 3 X's what I was told on the phone by the manager) which I was told was because I had long hair...but WAIT...I only had my ROOTS done?

In the end I ended up saying "whatever" and paying, and was given a slight discount (which still was obscure) only to be asked what I would like to tip my stylist. "Can I just write it on the reciept?" I asked. "No you have to tell me so I can put it in the machine". That to me was HORRIBLE, there were people standing all around me, and tipping should be a private matter. ugh, now I was getting really annoyed and angry.

A few days passed and I was unhappy with my hair, you could still see my regrowth, she hadn't followed the last stylists foils and it was obvious. I got a call from the salon asking me when I'd like to pick up the blush I'd "forgotten". WHAT???? I informed her that I did not want the blush and was confused by her question. She told me that I was already charged for it, she could not refund the money because she'd already written my name on the blush, and I could pick it up whenever I'd like...are you KIDDING me????

SO, not only is this salon not upfront with their pricing, but the manager is a total shister, obviously dishonestly pawning the product over customer service, wooing people in with unrealistic quotes on services. The manager was rude, manipulative, condescending and very backhanded.

I will not be going back to this salon, it was not a pleasant experience, I felt as though I was walking into a lion's den and everyone was out to sell me something, even IF I said no thanks.

(in the end I did end up getting my money back for the blush, the owner was there and overheard the manager telling me I could not get a refund and walked over and did give me the cash. The manager seemed overly paranoid and kept saying to me "yes, remember, you left the blush right here on the register counter, remember?" and I was just too over it all to cause any waves and I gave her a very angry look and said "no, not really, that's not how I remember it at all" and left)

Beware of this salon, my experience may be a fluke, but I do not respect unproffessionalism or shady business. I am willing to pay a premium for my hair, but not to people who are not upfront and not honest.

My experience at Van Salon and Spa was so professional and very relaxing, I thought I was on an Island vacation! I had an essential facial and a 90 minute massage and I was at peace. The Aveda products they use are great and the staff there seems very educated in what they do. I am telling all my friends about it and I just wanted to tell some other people that I do not know. You will not be disappointed in any way!

This was 3 years ago. The waxer was late. I wait almost an hour. She came in a rush. She waxed. She burned. She waxed half of my brows off. I had to lie there for an hour with ice compresses on my eyes to take the swelling down and have to ability to drive home. I was in pain. The waxer acted like I overreacted. The owner acted like I overreacted. The owner charged me anyway. She then sold me an eyebrow pencil. I cried the whole way home. They called 3 days later. Not to check on me, but to reinforce that I was overreacting. (Even though the waxer was fired a few days later.) The owner was rude, condescending and plain awful. My only regrets-going there in the first place, waiting for a irresponsible, poorly trained witch, and not throwing a hissy over paying. My biggest regret-being too young to realize I could sue. My regret is their gain. I hope no one ever has to go through was I did. My eyebrows never grew back; I have to draw half of them on, everyday-for the rest of my life.

PROS: none
CONS: horrible service, no eyebrows and a horrid owner/manager
