Having just moved to the Penn Hills area, and having lived in both San Francisco and one block from China Town in Philadelphia I was worried that I would spend weeks - or longer - searching for a good, not spectacular, but good Chinese

I love this place. They are so polite and the food is wonderful. When I call, the lady recognizes me and knows my order. Everything I have tried has been great! I'm lucky to live as close as I do and they deliver!!!

Since moving to Pittsburgh from the West Coast, I've had a big issue trying to find good Chinese food. Luckily, when I moved to Penn Hills, I ran across No 1 Chinese Kitchen. Problem solved!

Not only do they make really good chicken, pork

No. 1 Chinese really IS #1! The food is always great, the service is always prompt and friendly, and the prices are very affordable.

I wanted to say that the other review is completely unfair and rude. This person overheard the husband and wife arguing and actually mentioned the specifics on the internet... HOW DARE THEY!!! How would that reviewer like it if their "dirty laundry" was posted on the internet????

Anyways, I highly recommend No. 1 Chinese...... AWESOME!!! :-)

ps.... the General Tso's and Egg rolls are the BEST!!!!!!

I usually order take out, but this restaurant does have a small dining room. It is located in the business district in Penn Hills on Frankstown Road. My favorites are the Sweet and Sour Chicken, Combination LoMein and General Tso's Chicken. The Crab Rangoon is also very good. The prices are what you would expect from a chinese restaurant with the lunch menu being less expensive than the dinner menu. Lunch specials run about $5-$6 and include soup or egg roll.

The food here was comparable to some of the decent sit down Chinese places in Pittsburgh. The restaurant has three small tables where you can eat your food if you so desire. However, it is geared more toward take out. I ordered Szechuan Chicken and my daughter ordered General Tso's Chicken. The lady who took our order was lovely. Her two young daughters were also present in the restaurant, and they were running around a little bit--as toddlers do. While somewhat distracting, they weren't horribly behaved.

As my daughter and I sat there eating, the male employee (who I am assuming was the lady's husband) began yelling at the female employee about the little girls. He told her to get the kids under control and that she was worthless. He was yelling that she had spent 3 hours on snow peas and had gotten nothing done. It calmed down again and then the lady gathered her children a short time later. She must have walked back into the kitchen area to get something for the girls to eat because the man suddenly started screaming at her again. He was yelling, "All you feed them is noodles. That's not real food. And whole milk! Are you a mother? Are you a mother? Are you a mother? Answer me!"

She nodded.

He yelled, "You're not a very good one!"

Had my daughter not have been with me, I would have interceded on that woman's behalf. I probably would have gotten kicked out. I did tell the woman that her kids were beautiful and that she needed to unload her old man. The poor thing started crying as she left. One thing I know is that no plate of Szechuan Chicken is worth supporting an abusive owner/ chef/ employer/ spouse/ whatever. Therefore, I will not be returning to No. 1 Chinese.

One last note: The restroom was too dirty to use and the kitchen had a bunch of ribs sitting on top of a bucket. I'm glad I had the chicken and not the pork!

Pros: Good food. Really good.

Cons: The man who appears to be running the place is abusive to his wife/employee.
