I have only been here for the lunch buffet, but I've never been disappointed. Neat atmosphere, close to Pitt's campus, and rather inexpensive. Anytime I'm in the mood for Indian food, this is the first place I go.

Hands down the best Indian food I've had in Pittsburgh (and a few other cities...) Cheap, delicious, great service - what else is there to say? Also, used them for catering a decently large event (100+ people) and it was amazing!!!

Yum. Yum. Yum. I have no idea why this place is getting such mediocre reviews! Maybe its because I'm a girl, or maybe its because Ive been here with Indian friends who chat up the waiters, but Ive always had great service! Just try smiling

the service is downright horrible pretty much everytime i go there, however it is a small price to pay for excellent food. I would love to be mad at this restaurant bc of the service but everytime i go there, my food is always perfect. ive been going here for over 7 years and have gone quite a bit of times. I love the shahi chicken korma, and the aloo tika appetizer. samosas are also pretty awesome. Food is always consistent for me and its a shame that so many others have not gotten delicious food also.. maybe give them another try and just ignore the waitstaff. I just do my best to keep it short and simple with the waitstaff and not expect to much and i am always pleased with my food so it usually ends up a good night! i usually wait a little long for my check at the end and they def do not come back to check on you really. I am usually pretty easy to please though.. just make sure my food is hot and tasty. thats the most important part. i just try and keep myself occupied with conversation with the people i am with and not focus on what the waitstaff is doing and before i know it i have what i need and i can be on my way

Pros: fantastic food

Cons: terrible service

My lamb korma was tough, gristley, and lukewarm but it was perfectly seasoned to my request. SOs chicken vindaloo was good. Mulligatowny had nice flavor but was very thin. Tandoori salad was nice take on chicken - unusual coating was tasty. Spinach nan had a light garlic taste with spinach topping on puffy dough. Reasonable selection of beers. Prices were moderate. SO thought portions were smaller than some other local restaurants but they were acceptable size. Service was awful even though there were at least 5 waiters and a bus boy on hand. (It's a small place so that is overstaffed.) We were seated promptly but sat for over 10 minutes after we closed our menus to have our order taken and again at end of our meal for bill. Waiter(s) did not respond to attempted eye contact or wave during meal. The place is dark and a bit dingy - nothing like the photo illustrated. If you stay away from the lamb and aren't concerned with service, the food might be enough to entice you but with several other very good east Indian restaurants nearby, we probably won't return.

India Garden is my favorite restaurant. I travel well over an hour to enjoy their food. Due to the distance, I don't viist as often as I would like. There is one gentleman in particular who remembers me each and every time. He orders my beer without needing to be told what I drink. He also knows my favorite dish.

Indian cuisine is deliciious, particularly if you like spicy food. At India Garden, using a scale of one to 10, you can order dishes that are spiced just to your taste. There are an array of menu items. I always order a vegetarian dish. My son's favorite is a poultry dish. We both have eaten at other Indian restaurants and he loves India Garden just as much as I do.

I recommend visiting India Garden for its wonderful food, unique atmosphere, and affordable prices..

I used to frequent India Garden regularly while in college. I still enjoy the food, but the service is now absolutely terrible. After my last dinner experience, I will not be returning. The waiters are inattentive and give you looks bordering on disdain. It took ten minutes before we received water. Then we went a full fifteen minutes without even a glance from a waiter to take our order. We were on the verge of leaving before the waiter showed up. The restaurant is more than somewhat loud. The waiter stood at on end of the table the entire time. Instead of moving near the person ordering, he made the girl sitting at the end of the table practically scream her order. When the food did come, one order was missing, which left one person to sit without food for another twenty minutes. We had to request normally complimentary items, request water when glasses were clearly empty, and even request the check after they removed all the empty plates. On top of all this, the restaurant itself was sweltering. We sat next to the thermostat and noticed the temperature started at 83 degrees and rose to 85 while we ate. India Garden clearly does not respect it's customers, and I would recommend you stay well clear of this restaurant.

The food was delicious! I do have to say that the service was a litlle spotty, and that the waiters were a bit rude. That is, however, how most of the employees in this resturaunt are. I know for a fact that most of them are high school dropouts, and are a bit ignorant. However, if you keep persisting, they will listen. Good food + good prices = :)

India Garden is a good place to get Indian Food at all hours of the day. They have a very wide selection, tasty desserts, and occasional buffets and hours where many meals are at half price. Many of the things they have are also available at the Indian grocer next door for home cooking. As other reviewers have noted, at some hours they play indian music very loud, and one must actively grab the waiters' attention to get service beyond initially ordering one's meal.

I have eaten here before, both the menu and the buffet during the week. The menu was great, the buffet wasn't the best, but I wanted to take my dh there so he could try Indian food. My plan was to get a single entre off the menu and share it for lunch and go to Pho Mien for dinner.

The selection was so fabulous on the buffet we both ended up getting and leaving there absolutely stuffed. I have never eaten better Indian food! What a treat! Even though it was 2:00pm and the buffet was ending at 3:00 all the dishes were simply great! YUMMY! I can't wait to go back!

My wife and I went for the lunch buffet. It was really small and none of the food was hot. I caution you not to choose any of the meat items, they are definately below health code temperature. We both felt sick later. They had a huge plate of pre-fried aps that should have been done in smaller batches so they weren't soggy. The food didn't taste fresh and wasn't very good besides being cold. The location is nice, the service seemed fine, and the place is pleasant enough but don't eat the food!

I am not a big fun of Indian food that may be the reason that I've been here for four years and it was my first time to have my lunch in the so called #1 Indian food restaurant. I am so sure that it was also my LAST time to the restaurant.
Actually, I have no complaint to their food. Their food is OK. However, one of my friends after eating found a little living being in her cup!!!! We all saw the thing. So we called the waiter. After about 5 minutes (I was told that was about the normal time we have to wait for service in that tiny restaurant, although there were very few customers there.), one waiter came over and looked at the cup and took it away without saying anything. After a while, he brought back another cup of water. I was pretty mad and asked him:" Do we deserve an apology?" His answer was really disguisting that ended my lunch right there. He said:"for what? that was just a piece of spice." We could not really believe what he had just said. I then told my friend:"you should really take a photo and send it to the relevant city office." You know what did the waiter say? He said very rudely:"Yeah, you really should! Maybe next time!"
His words were just so disguisting! I really suggest everyone who read this review not go there for food. It is really not worth eating there with humiliation.

I think the food here is great. The half off dinner special starts at 10 and it a great deal. They also have a wine special which the few times I've ordered it was a great bottle and very cheap. I've never had a problem with the service either. Once the young man serving us was really friendly and great, another time it was an older man who didn't "greet with a smile" but was plenty attentive and efficient. I personally don't like to socialize with servers so this is fine by me. I think other reviewers are too harsh, what kind of 40+ year old waiter wants to be chipper at 11 pm when a bunch of college students come in to get cheap food...I mean give them a break.

Anyway, I guess it's a little loud, but I love the Indian music videos, it's fun and a nice touch and I think that is only later at night. I've been there for lunch and they were showing cricket. And that picture is actually fairly accurate of what it looks like...it's just lit by a professional photographer rather than how it looks at night.

Bottom line, food is great, they have great specials, service is adequate...if you want "flare" go to fridays or bennigans.

Its a pity really. The restaurant has good food.
But the worst possible service imaginable.

The waiters/bearers are downright rude and lackadaiscal in their service. And have no intention of providing service. The senior person has a serious attitude problem since when I complained on the lack of service, he is like staring at me and like " Oh! 15 mts is not enough waiting. We need more time to attend to you"....

The food quality is not too bad, but the service is appalling and can almost be insulting. It may not be so for all customers though. Most of the staff is Indian and I think they take their Indian guests for granted. I say this because I have seen the same waiter, who did not even bother checking what I wanted to drink, being extremely courteous and attentive to a non-Indian group. One of my most "memorable" visits has been when the waiter took my order and did not even bring me a glass of water for the next 15 minutes until I got really irritated and started complaining. I have been a frequent visitor to the restaurant (since it is close to where I live) and I tip very well. However, I have always noticed a very disinterested attitude from the staff almost every time. Quite a few times I have had the waiter come over and plop the check on the table without even bothering to ask if I wanted anything more. I am not sure what their criterion for offering good service is. But if you don't fall under that criterion, be prepared to have to spend at least a few minutes trying to get someone's attention even if you just want your glass refilled. I just visited the restaurant today and I have decided that I will not go back there again - something I should have thought of ages back.

Pros: Close to University of Pittsburgh campus, if you work/study there

Cons: Terrible service

India garden is the worst place to eat, first the servers r so bad they dont even smile to greet, secondly food is so nasty its hard to swallow, third they dont even listen if we say there was some problem in food , forth the portion is very small, last not the least its all together killing your money when u go there. DO NOT BUY FOOD FROM THERE, I think they use the left over food for next day

I placed an order with them and alerted them that I am allergic to nuts. They informed me that there were no nuts in anything I ordered and there would not be a problem. Well, they were wrong and thankfully the nuts were so big that when I cut into my samosa they were visible. The worst part, was not that this happened but that the manager's reponse was "all right". He did not say, I am sorry, did not offer to comp the dish, nothing. All he said was "all right". I did not eat anything, but per others who did eat the food, it was mediocre at best. Pittsburgh magazines rating are wrong. There is not only better service in this city, there is better Indian food.

Not a place to go if you are looking for friendly service.. sometimes it is intimidating walking in!
Their food is so-so, I would stick with their vegetarian choices such as their chick peas and eggplant.
They do have great half price specials.

The cooked vegetables are not very fresh. The photo you see up in the left-hand corner doesn't resemble the inside of the restaurant at all (the restaurant is dark inside, and there are no table cloths or plants). Very noisy, even loud atmosphere -- not a good place if you like to talk when you eat, because you'll have to shout. Service is exceptionally cold and unfriendly.

My officemate and I went there for lunch. Between 11:40 and 12:40
there were a grand total of six customers. I'm a little surprised--
I liked it better than that.

We (each) got their vegetarian lunch special (Palak Paneer, which was
very nice, Dal, which was ok, Roti, good, Raita, spiced in a lively
fashion, and rice (Basmati, but unadorned)). At $5.95, it's not a
steal, but I thought it was a bit better than the remainder of Oakland
evidently does.

Or are my standards too low? Followups to discussion.

First off, completely disregard the picture. The inside looks nothing at all like that!

Indian pop/rap music videos are played very loudly at night. So if you want to have a convesation with someone while you're eating, expect to have to yell over the noise.

Horrible service. In fact, worst service I have ever experienced at any restaurant. Servers are both very unfriendly and unhappy. If you want more water you literally have to take your glass up to bar and ask to have it filled. Plus they won't give spicy food to my non-Indian friends. Also, if loud and obnoxious people come sit at the table next to you, don't ask to be reseated, as the manager will come over and tell you that you can't be.

I've eaten here a lot, just because they offer half-price. But I have had enough of this place and will never return.

Excellent food. And no, I'm not being paid by them :)

Half price 4pm-6pm and 11pm-1am

Youve got to try the chicken korma and the matar paneer!

The taste is great, although the food is most definitely not for people who are trying to loose weight.

Service is average.
