Valanni's has a fun modern atmosphere. The food is very quite good. They offer a large selection of tapas, which always makes for a fun eating experience!

This is my favorite restaurant in Center City. Good location and good food. In the summer you can sit outside. They have excellent tuna, great tapas and lots of small plates if you want a variety.

My girlfriend and I went to Valanni for our first restaurant week in the city, and it still stands as one of our favorite places. While looking over the regular menu, I could tell the prices were not outrageous, but the food was excellent. The duck was cooked to perfection and the polenta (my first experience with it) was delicious. The real standout, though, is their Oreo beignet desert, which was amazing. They have the recipe on their website, but I would suggest going there and experiencing it first hand.

Not bad, this place is moderately priced. It has a nice atmosphere, and everyone is very cheerful there. They usually are able to get you in and out pretty fast if you are in a hurry.

Over a month ago my friends and I went to Valanni's for a girls night out. We were looking for cocktails and light fare. So we decided upon Valanni's mostly because we love Mercado so much.

We walk into the restaurant on a Saturday night fully expecting to wait to be seated, we were not interested in sitting at the bar all night (little did we know...). So we speak to the hostess who tells us it will be 25-45 minutes for a table. So we walk toward the bar. Realizing that she never took my name I go back to the host stand where she tells me that she doesn't need it.

How can you possibly not need my name, do you know every one waiting in here by face?? Aside from that in a customer service environment you're telling me that you don't want to know my name. Awesome!!

After a full hour we ask where our table is to be told it's going to be AT LEAST 45 minutes more. Still no name taken. We decide to order a few things from the bar to hold us over. As son as we do our table is ready. So we ask the bartender if we can transfer the check over to our table, he tells us he doesn't know that we need to find the hostest and find out. Umm, I'm sorry, who is the server here and who is out for a Friday night dinner??

Never again. To top it off we sat next the the most obnoxious couple who were clearly upset that we were speaking loud. But you had to to be heard in such a loud place (the reason we wanted a table and not to sit at the bar). The two men were giving us eye rolls and sideways comments all night about how you can tell who the regular patrons are and who are not.

NEVER AGAIN. I've lived in Philadelphia all my life and there are far far better places to spend your money. The food was decent, nothing special.

There were 2 of us who just wanted some drinks and lite bar menu fare - but we wanted to sit at a table instead of at the bar. There were plenty of tables available and no others were waiting to be seated.
The hostess said the only way we could have drinks & items from the bar menu was to sit AT THE BAR. So we left. This was Monday, 7:15pm, 5/18/09. Thanks to her we found anew place that we prefer.

Pros: It was on the way to our destination

Cons: Inability to accomodate a simple request

I don't know where these people that had these problems ate, but I've never had any of these problems at Valanni. The food is always prepared perfectly and the service is ALWAYS top notch. I personally don't know anyone that works there and I've never been made to feel anything less than welcome. With this being said, I need to touch on the new menu items, excellent changes without shaking up the menu to much (a fault that I see happen at many restaurants). I hope that these nay-sayers don't discourage people from experiencing one Philly's truly wonderful places to dine.

Pros: SERVICE!!!!! and of course the food.

Cons: Withou a reservation on the weekends you may have to wait.

After having an amazing meal and great experience, I was completely astonished to read some previous reviews. My dinner was almost perfect, the octopus cooked to perfection, the lamb, although a little over seasoned was delightful. My waitress was on top of everything, never had to ask for another drink, and she even had an actual personality which is always refreshing. I highly recommend Valanni.

Went on Valentine's Day. Had a reservation at 9:15. We were sent to the bar because our table was not ready at 9:15. It took about 10 minutes to get the attention of a bartender to get a drink. The bartender did not even know how to make a french martini. Drinks were expensive and not that great. At about 9:45, we were finally seated. Our waitress was very rude. and rushed us to order our meals. The food was good, but the service was absolutely awful. I would not go back because of the service.

Perhaps it's my fault. I don't know any of the staff here and maybe they don't think that I'm cool enough to wait on me. I'm not really sure what they think my faults are, but i can not get any kind of service here that would deem even a half decent review. I've tried the bar-got ignored while the bartender chatted with his friends. Tried the wave, tried the um...excuse me, finally flagged down a waiter to ask the bartender to come down with the check.
Next time we tried sitting at a table, even worse. easily the worst staff with attitudes in the city. Guys, just so remember you are waiters! You actually have to wait on the customers. Who pay the bills. Your bills as well.
Never ever again! Terrible.

I agree that this place has great food and the atmosphere was good as well. The problem is that it is really noisy and cramped. I sat about 2 feet away from another couple and heard their entire conversation. The service is horrible. My waiter was more interested in talking to the couple next to us because he knew them and I didn't even get dessert because I didn't want to wait an extra 15 minutes to get my check. I would not recommend it on weekends. Try weekdays if you want decent service. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because of the service.

has the best brunch on sundays! - the drinks (say bloody mary or mimosa..) are as expensive as the meals, but are very delicious. Valanni offers breakfasty foods, as all brunch restaurants, but also lunch-type foods, so if you're not a big breakfast person, like me, you can order something else you prefer.
We found this when we were going Morning Glory for breakfast, but were turned off by the 1.5 hr wait -- we found a place with better food...........and no wait!

I had a birthday brunch for myself and 4 other 20-something friends. Everyone loved the dish they got and the prices are very reasonable for brunch. The staff was curteous and the atmosphere seems more chill than other places (perhaps this is different at other times). Menu had a good variety of items and I would go back again. Only about 10-12/person and great morning drinks!

Parking stinks in this part of town but there are a few really great restaurants that it's worth the driving around the block 10 times for a spot. The portions are definitely plentiful and there is alot to choose from on their menu. Everything I ate was great and I definitely would go back.

I love Valanni! Great service and the best tapas I've had in Philadelphia. GREAT sangria too, loaded with all kinds of fruit. Definitely try the chicken empanadas and the brie with hazelnuts and cherries is to die for!! With its big, open front windows and generous amount of outdoor seating, Valanni proves as the perfect place for a light summer dinner and a big pitcher of sangria.

I don't usually post but dine out ALOT!!! The previous entry about not being gay (I am not gay for the record) provoked me to write. I go to Valanni like once a month or more and find the staff (bar, waiters/waitresses. hostesses, Management etc.) to be ultra-accommodating and knowledgable. This place gets such a great mix of people because of their accepting, efficient, and friendly customer service. I feel bad for the previous writers" jaded view. RIDICULOUS! Keep up the good work Valanni! By the way - great empanadas and love the new look!

This is my first post..woo.I absolutely LOVED this place. My husband and I (were only 25 BTW) go on date nights once a week and we go to at least 3 rest. during rest. week. THis was our favorite place. We had the spicy potatoes and chicken emapanadas to start....Our entree was great...they let me substitute my side of polenta because I don't eat shellfish with the sweet potatoes and our dessert was by far the best...My husband has a sweet tooth which made the Orea bignets perfect for him and I love ice cream so the banana desert with ice cream and liquer was perftect for me..We can't wait to go back, but were trying so many other places. Oh yeah great service too. We were early and they let us wait inside and have drinks before dinner.

A few of my coworkers and I chose this as our restaurant week pick and we enjoyed it so much that we are still talking about it. Their brunch is great and the choices for drinks was so tempting. Staff was very friendly. I do, however, think they need to be a lot more strick on their dress code and avoid the trash that tries to walk in.

As a long time diner at Valanni I was shocked to recently go in and find a whole new staff. The new staff seems okay, but the consistency in the food leaves something to be desired. I'm a theater goer, so I used to like Valanni because it was close, but now I'm thinking of other places. The last two times I was there, I order a filet medium rare and once got it rare, and the other time got it almost well done. My partner got the tuna, and it just wasn't as he remembered. I hope they can figure things out in the kitchen because I really liked it there, but I'm not going to spend good money for bad food, just to be near the theater.

I am Evan Turney, executive chef of valanni, and I am posting a review based on the drunken chef review above. First of all, we have a manager on the floor at all times, not one manager was notified about this so called incident. Also, if this person was to get up and walk out, a manager would have to have closed this open check with the filet on it and not one manager heard a thing about this story. If my experience at a restaurant was this bad I would have at least told a manager or my server at the time. I also think that your name greg luban sort of resembles the " name craig laban". If you would like to call the restaurant and discuss this issue, please feel free to call valanni restaurant and ask for me personally.

Do yourself a favor and go to Valanni. It was awesome. We started with the Rasberry Sangria - SO GOOD! We had the guacamole and the grilled romaine. The Grilled Romaine is amazing. This is a MUST HAVE! For my main course I had the special of the day, which was a salmon dish that was delicious!
We didn't have room for dessert but I can only imagine that it's just as good.
Valanni is a treat, the atmosphere is great, the service was respectful and let us sit and drink our sangria, and the price is reasonable!
Like I said, do yourself a favor and go to Valanni!

There were a couple of slight drawbacks to our evening but overall the experience was very good. After a drink at the bar we were seated; we hadn't seen our friends recently and didn't dive into the menu. Our waiter was a little pushy, he asked us four times in 10 minutes if we were ready to order. Two of us ordered the tuna, rare which came out as tuna very well done. We sent it back and by the time we got our entrees the rest of our party was done with dinner. However; the baked brie was excellent as were the mussells (and there were TONS of them!) The chocolate plate for two was devoured; the pumpkin creme brulee was good but not compared to the Oreo beignets which were seriously the best dessert ever. Will absolutely return, probably for dinner but definitely for dessert.

I love this place. The food is TO DIE FOR. Late night menu is great, service is great. prices are reasonable. I always get the Prince Edward Island Mussels - YUM! I think this menu item has a loyal cult following because it's so incredibly good. Fresh basil, fresh garlic, fresh mussels, fresh everything in it make it wonderful. Cute ambiance, usually pretty lively but not so much that it's annoying. Fantastic gayborhood gem that should be around for a while!

I was at Valanni on the same night as 9/11 review and I just have to say our server and drinks rocked.

The only drama being made was by that customer who made a much bigger deal of the situation then was needed.

I will be back for fab drinks, food and music!

If you haven't been here for brunch you are missing out on one of the "gems" in the city. Myself and a couple of friends had a great experience while dining last Saturday. The food was exceptional and the drinks were unique and tailored towards brunch. If you like champagne cocktails (that surpass the typical mimosa) or a kick butt bloody mary this is the spot. We will definitely be back. Thanks for a great brunch!

I had heard great things about this place. I was VERY disappointed. I went on a Monday night to enjoy some house music. The music was all that was good about this place. Service was poor. We were a party of 3 sitting at a table and there was another table next to us (not adjacent) and our check was grouped with the other party's check. When the server was asked to divide the check she said that she couldn't and that everyone needed to pay. I did not know the people at the other table and it was clear that they were not done with their evening. I tried explaining that we needed to leave and wanted to pay. The server refused over and over again and claimed that she could not split the check. I then went to talk to the bartender regarding the check grouping. He had the same attitude but eventually split the check after he was waving his hands in the air and in my face.

The drinks were average - overpriced actually. Nothing worth all the drama that I went through and poor service. I wasted 30 minutes of my time arguing about a check being grouped with another party. I will not be going back. Eventually, if they keep treating people like this there won't be any customers and the problem will solve itself.

Pros: Late Night Menu

Cons: Slow Service, Poor Attitude of Staff

Our party of four had made reservations for a late dinner on a weekend night, and chose to sit outside, so I can't really comment on the atmosphere of the restaurant...but I can comment on the service! Sitting outside probably had a lot to do with it, but we often felt forgotten by our waiter (who forgot to leave cream with the coffee, or spoons with dessert, for example). Two in our party ordered several tapas to share as a meal, which I really enjoyed - although if you are used to European-style tapas, these will be much more "frou-frou" than what you will get overseas. The food took quite a while (45+ minutes) to come out, so it was good that we were in the mood to enjoy a leisurely meal of small plates. I will probably go back, but will try indoor seating next time.

What a cool place...great environment, good food at a reasonable price, great drinks and consistent. Whenever I have out of town guests we head to Valanni...even the hard to please Manhattan-ites love it. Also a great mixed crowd at Happy Hour, a nice place to unwind on weekday evenings.

Pros: just about everything

Cons: can get smoky at bar...hurry up with the damn smoking ban!

This delicious treat offers a great atmosphere and fantastic food. I have yet to experience a bad meal here. The lights are dim enough to create a romantic feeling but bright enough to eat by. Drinks have alway been mixed well and the crowd is diverse. Take your significant other with you enjoy the food & atmosphere.

Being new to the city we'd never heard of Valanni, we randomply popped in early one Friday evening and were magically seated instantly(though I get the feeling we got really lucky). The drink menu was dangerous. We ordered 5 or 6 different cocktails and each was better than the last. I highly recommend the "Repeat Offender" & the "Valannitini". The food was fantastic as well, though we could have easily had a liquid dinner that evening......

The only downside of the evening (and not a big one) was the waiter starting off our night by forgetting the specials, as well as the end of the night when no fewer than four different busboys asked to take away our food.

The food - mussels roma style, duck with cherry and orange, and seared tuna - was fantastic. The meat and fish were cooked perfectly and paired with great garlic mashed potatoes, with the chefs paying extra attention to properly-proportioned sauces come plating time. My ahi tuni had just enough of balsamic reduction to give a hint of flavour without overpowering the mild fish, and the duck was great, as well.

Pricey but great for a special evening, it's hard to imagine making our dishes much better. The martinis needed more shaking and weren't cold enough.

The restaurant is loud and romantic daters should look elsewhere.

I stumbled onto Valanni 3 years ago after a show and since then have found the food and service consistently above the mark in every way. It is a romantic yet unpretentious place. I always see a nice mix of young and hip twenty somethings alongside theatre-goers and business-people alike. The servers/bartenders are genuinely friendly and the food outstanding. I think the steak is the best in the city!

I had high hopes, based on several reviews. The mussels appetizer and sangria were delicious. Unfortunately, it stopped there. My dining companion's duck was rubbery and dry. The lamb I ordered was overcooked. The rapini were undercooked (undercooked broccoli raab is an appetite killer). The lamb's accompaniments were overseasoned, salty and soggy. I ate a bite of everything and had the waiter take the food away. The waiter was surly. Wary of the menu now, when I ordered coffee for dessert (not Turkish coffee, mind you), not only was the coffee blend insipid (I think it might have been Folgers), but I received a mouthful of grounds. At least the menu is inexpensive, although a nice place would have had the GM100 I craved by the end of the "meal".

Went to Vallani for Restaurant Week and my experience, along with my friends, was excellent and I highly recommend this restaurant. I will be going back!

I had the guacomole salad (tortilla) which was very good, but nothing special. The artichoke and spinach ravioli was a pleasant surprise with an excellent summer broth and mixed vegetables on top. The surprise, the chocolate mousse was the best I have had. We sat outside so I cannot comment on the ambience. Sitting on Spruce was nice but the foot traffic could be overwhelming.

Service was excellent, we had a very attentive and humorous waiter who answered all of our questions and was prompt.

I went with a group, so it was good for groups, but also saw couples/dates there as well.

We have nothing but praise in all categories for this restaurant near our home. The amazing this is how consistent the food and service are - and we go once a week. The only negative is that Valanni has spoiled us for new restaurants. We often say of a new place, this is good - but not as good as Valanni.

Went there casual with a friend and my dear pup. The food was absolutely great, the service impeccable, and with a beautiful Fall weather day, the atmosphere was both romantic and idyllic. Of particular notice was the effort by the wait staff to ensure our comfort. I will go there again and again.

If you are looking for good latin or med food it is not to be found here. This is a trendy spot with bad food.Sorry to say it but these guys came from Audrey C which has great food, where did you go wrong guys???When a restaurant lets men in tank tops come in,well I think that sums it up.Big waste of time unless your drunk and hungry.

I went to Valanni with some friends for a nice evening meal but THAT IS NOT WHAT WE GOT. Although the service was extremely slow, the ambience was all right, and the food was decent, so we decided it was a pleasant evening overall... until after we paid for the meal. As we were getting ready to leave, the waiter comes out with the check and a calculator in his hand and asks "was everything all right, because you didn't tip me 20% tip!!! i mean i don't want to be a bitch or anything, but..." we stood there, appalled at how this waiter comes out to yell at us for not leaving him 20% tip for slow service!!! If you want to leave the restaurant with a bitter taste in your mouth, go to Valanni!
