They make a good shepherds pie, Guinness is on tap, and the place isn't too well-lit (nobody likes a brightly lit pub). If you're in the area, it's worth checking out.

This is a great bar in a prime location. There are several floors, and there is plenty of room if you come with a good. Food is pretty descent also. I highly recommend Black Sheet.

This is a cool place for a younger crowd at night - check out the lower level, play darts, and dance! It's also a great lunch and dinner place. The layout is great; there are several floors with different vibes - from cozy to group setting.

The last time I ate at the Black Sheep I left the restaurant and went directly to Jefferson?s emergency room where I was diagnosed with a severe case of scromboid p0isoning* resulting from consuming part of a tuna steak that had been allowed to spoil before landing atop my salad.

Adding insult to injury, the response of Black Sheep?s management to my experience, despite having the hospital report and a lunch receipt to prove that I had eaten the offending tuna within 20 minutes of being admitted to the ER, was a shrug. Forget an offer to pay the ER co-pay or even refund the cost of the meal or consideration of the fact that I lost the better part of a day at work, they did not even offer a word of apology or a simple thank you for bringing the matter to their attention. This place is true to its name.

* Scombroid is a type of food intoxication caused by the consumption of scombroid and scombroid-like marine fish species that have begun to spoil with the growth of particular types of food bacteria. www.cfsan.fda.gov/~ear/FLSCROM.html

Pros: None.

Cons: Food, management's attitude.

I work across the street and oddly don't go here that often. The pork sandwich is amazingly good. The beer selection is average for an Irish pub. I stay away because it is usually too loud and the last time we were there we were plagued by flys.

Hey Ikat, I completely agree. This place has gone way downhill and lost all charm.

Was trying to enjoy a football game with friends. I'd been to Black Sheep in the past and thought that it would be an ideal spot. Horrible mistake. While I was getting off a barstool, the busser told me to "come on, get out of the way, man" so that he could head outside and light the cigarette already in his mouth. Have worked at multiple restaurants and never seen a guest treated this way.
Once we finished mediocre food and non-fresh pints, no one cleared our plates away for 30 minutes. We were only a party of 5, but the waitress added a 20% gratuity to our check. We explained the siutation and that it was clearly not worth it, but got nowhere with the cover-my-own-butt management. I'm a Philadelphia resident that lives close by, but won't be going back.

Excellent Celtic inspired food, cozy Irish pub atmosphere with large, open hearth. Gets crowded with young partiers later in evening. We often bring guests here for an early dinner and ambiance.

I live and work in the city. I had friends visiting town and we decided to go out in the Rittenhouse area.
We stopped by the Black Sheep for its casual, unpretentious atmosphere.
Instead, from the point we set foot in the bar, we were greeted with rude service and major attitude from the bar hands and bartender. The bar seemingly draws a regular, abrasive, scruffy looking crowd-- who scoff at the sight of any well-dressed newcomers. Overall, the bar was unfriendly, dirty and dark, filled with a bunch of hostile nerds. I will be sure to tell everyone I know to boycott this place.

This bar can be very dark and dreary and at night is usually filled with young kids. Not good for people who are older.

Black sheep is a great place to go for food during the week (their veggie burger is great).
It's great for weekend nights out too... not too crowded, but just enough people. Nice atmosphere.

We're big on lunch after church - (see my other reviews). If you go to Saint Mark's on Locust, here's a good stop in. The service is very, very slow but lunch is pretty good. The price is average. Try the banger and mash (sausage and mashed potatos), or the fish fry. The Pulled Pork is very spicy ( no warning on the menu) and the French Toast is, well - not worth the price ( two fat slices of bread for ten dollars?). I don't like TV's over my head while I'm trying to eat and listen to the person next to me - but, that's a pub. And, it does remind you of pubs in England or Ireland.

This bar is a fun place to party hard with friends! Yes, the staff gets busy @ times - but just think of them as tough, not rude :) Great beer selection, best place to watch play off games in the city. This is one of my favorite bars that I always take out-of-town friends to during their visits.

I USE TO like this pub a lot I have been here on several occasions, for my birthday or just for a night out with friends. Maybe its because they won awards and it got to their heads, but in the past few months, the service has sharply declined and so has the food. The main point of this review is this.... I made a reservation a week in advance for dinner at 8PM on a weeknight. Yes, a popular time, but when we arrived (at 7:45 nonetheless) they told us that they were all full and gave our table away to a "big group". The hostess was trying to pull every lame excuse on us as to why she had just given the table away. On top of that, she was rude and didn't even apologize for the inconvenience and because of it, I will NEVER go here again.

My husband and I had dinner in the second floor dining room on Saturday night. It was great to have a non-smoking environment that was actually seperate from the smoking (downstairs). Our server was attentive and pleasant - he even treated us to a couple of hard-ciders to participate in a taste test with him. The curry mussles were fantatastic and the crabcakes were some of the best I've had in the city. I'm looking forward to bringing friends next time.

The hubby had a Guinness and the fish and chips, I had a cocktail and the grilled tuna sandwich...the food was phenomenal! Bothe served with mixed greens tossed in a vinagrette and extremely crunchy, yet tender fries (I'm NOT a fries lover, but these were yummy!) some type of pickled ginger/slaw was absolutely delicious especially rounding out the fish. All served on a huge platter...great value and good eats!

This bartender left 2 women with a very bad feeling. Sat at the bar, waited quite a few minutes, though the place had 2x's the waitstaff to customers. Asked a question once the waiter daned to acknowledge our presence & were cut short with a "order or don't, it's the same to me attitude."

Couldn't get out of there quickly enough. This is the reason for the expression, "One rotten apple can spoil a barrell."

I've been here several times and always enjoyed it, whether I wanted a sit-down meal with a group or just a place to hang out for drinks on a date. The food is definitely a cut-above average bar standards, with some of the best calamari I've had anywhere and an excellent spicy mushroom wrap. The upstairs dining room is nice if you want a less hectic and noisy experience. I've had no problem with the waitservice; in fact I've found them very accomodating in several instances regarding special requests and speeding up service when I needed to make a show.

It's a nice alternative to the always packed and crazy environment at Monk's.

My friend and I ordered a cheese plate and when it came out it had meat in it (which the menu didn't mention) We are vegetarians, so we hated to say anything about it but we had to tell the waitress. She took it and said she replaced it with a new one, but later in the meal we found out she just dumped it on a new plate. If she had told us she couldn't replace it, ok, but she just lied instead. She got mad when she got caught and proceeded to whisper blatently to all her co-workers who starred at us for this. The refused to allow us to speak to the manager so we just ended up leaving. I would never recommend people go there for lack of the staff caring alone.

This place is definately the best on the square.... Try their amazing coconut curry mussels or the pork sandwich on the first floor. Or go on upstairs and sit down to some fabulous crab cakes or a fillet. If you don't like to be in a swamped bar then come back on Sunday for a great brunch. You won't be disappointed. This place does it all so well.....

To call the Black sheep Pub doesn't give it ists full due. NOt only was in voted "Best Pub in Philly" last year but its food has been rated at the level of some of our best reataurants. The upstairs dining room is a smoke-free and quiet while tthe first floor bar has the ambiance of a Irissh Pub in full swing. Great place to meet people.

Great food, I love their pub menu - perfect for that after work happy hour meal. The service is excellent as well. I like being able to choose between the basement bar - for a casual night out, or the more trendy main bar. And the dining room upstairs is usually less crowded and smoke free! One of the better places to hang out in the Rittenhouse Square area
