THIS IS PA INSPECTION LAW AND PENALTY FOR FRAUD

Duration of Suspension

Type of
Violation 1st Violation 2nd
Violation 3rd and
Subsequent
Violation

(4) Category 4

(i) Misstatement of fact- 1st offense 2 months, 2nd offense 4 months. 3rd offense 1 year

(ii) Performing or indicating unnecessary repairs for the purpose of passing an inspection -1st offense 4 months, 2nd offense 6 months, 3rd offense 1 year

(iii) Performing repairs for the purpose of passing an inspection without vehicle owner authorization - 1st offense 4 months, 2nd offense 6 months, 3rd offense 1 year

(ix) Failure to give a written receipt or work order to customer, or to list required information on work order - 1st offense, 2 months, 2nd offense 4 months, 3rd offense 1 year

(1) The station owner bears the burden of proving that it provided proper supervision of the employe who committed the violation, but that supervision could not have prevented the violation.

MY COMMENTS:

If you feel that you have been victimized contact PENDOT and report the offending shop. That is the only way to stop these practices.

The worst part of this is not the money, it's terrorizing someone I love into believing that her car is not only unsafe, but will fall apart while she is driving it causing her to get into an accident.

Maybe it's time that they are afriad of losing their inspection license. The purpose of the license is to ensure people drive safe cars, not to boost the bottom line through fraud and intimidation.

Question for Kettering and Sons - Did you lose a the inspection contract with a Lebanon County Agency? If so, why?

HORRIBLE RIP OFFS!

They terrify you into paying for uneeded repairs. They usually prey on individuals with little or no automotive knowledge, mostly women. They told me basically part of my engine was going to fall out on the road if I didn't have over $1,000 dollars worth of repairs done right before my inspection was due. So they said they could not pass it on inspection without these repairs. Of course I could not afford the repairs and opted to get a second opion since I had had similar work done to the vehicle not to long before. I took my vehicle to another shop and had no problem passing inspection and was told that the repair they suggested was completely untrue and that it was as solid as could be. I paid $25 dollars for an inspection with no other issues wrong with my vehicle. I will tell everyone I know about the crooked pratices of Simon S Kettering Automotive. BEWARE!!

I do most of my own routine maintenance (oil changes, plugs, filters, etc.) and a little more than that if necessary (bodywork/diagnostics).

When my girlfriend's car needed an alignment, I went out of my way to patronize a local tire shop, as opposed to a chain. Boy was that mistake! She's young, (female), and in college, so when the service manager 'Bob' called her to inform her that she also needed an inspection a red flag went up. Sure enough, 'Bob' called back soon to report the tech's ('Randy') findings:

1. New windshield wipers: _$23_
($6 @ WM, $9 at Advance, installed)
2. Polish headlights: _$115_
(could buy replacements on eBay at this price)
3. New fuel filter: (no estimate provided)
3. New tires: (no estimate provided)
(big surprise at a tire shop -- they passed inspection 'but probably need to be replaced, ma'am')

Later that afternoon when I came in to pay the balance, the front desk guy quoted me "$80," without providing a breakdown of charges. After I paid with credit card, I discovered we'd paid $17 (PA inspection fail) for the privilege of being hustled.

I would not recommend this shop to anyone, especially someone who doesn't know much about routine maintenance or how greasy, small-town tire shops operate.

Pros: Alignment was done correctly.

Cons: I probably have pinholes in my CV boots now.
