I have been going to this restaurant for many years. The last two years I started to see it slipping a bit, when waiters had been established with the restaurant for many years started to disappear. I went to the restaurant this pass

The service at La Fagmiglia is the best I've experienced in a long time. Two weeks ago I flew into Philly with my 5 year old son. Not being familiar with any Italian restaurants in the city, I asked a native on the plane for a referral. When we entered La Famiglia, I immediately regretted arriving with even a well-behaved child. This is FORMAL atmosphere. However everyone from the hostess to the waiters catered to our every need and made us both feel comfortable throughout the entire meal. Excellent service.

However, the food was disappointing and not reflective of traditional Italian cusine . The portions were small (especially for the price) and the restaurant seemed to be more concerned with food presentation than with food quality.

La Famiglia is the best place to go when you want to have a great, relaxing meal with an awesome bottle (or two) of wine. I am all for BYOB's but I am tired of being rushed through dinner in a cramped, packed, smelly and loud place.

Great restaurant. Happy memories of the place. Since I no longer work or am in town often, I have quite forgotten how much I like La Familigia both food and ambience.

I recently graduated from graduate school and got my masters. As a gift for this accomplishment, my husband is treating and joining me on a trip to Italy later this summer. I was told that a new chef from Naples, Italy had just started to cook at La Famiglia, so to celebrate my new degree it seemed fitting to take my family there before my trip to Italy. I was nervous at first about getting everyone ready and in the appropriate clothes, but when I got there I realized that La Famiglia is totally casual which to me, is one of the most important things, comfort is everything! Because it was a celebration it seemed appropriate order a bottle of wine. The wine list was amazing! We had a pretty difficult time choosing from such exquisite options. I order the Vitellow con Fontina, I don?t know how else to describe this dish other then amazing! The portions were huge, so we were all excited to eat our left-overs again the next day. I?m so glad we decided to try La Famiglia, I don?t know if the food in Italy or anywhere for that matter can compare!

I was recently at La Famiglia and had an amazing dining experience! I found out that they had just hired a new chef (from Naples, Italy) and he created a new menu- everything looked incredible! I love Italian cuisine and always wanted to dine at La Famiglia, but was a little intimidated to try it because of it's reputation as being very fancy. The second I walked in the door all of my fears disappeared - I fit right in and I was only wearing jeans and a nice blouse! The ambiance of the restaurant is wonderful- very classy. The service was excellent! All of the waiters were very nice and catered to all of my requests. Since I am a huge wine fan, I was also very impressed with their large selection of wine!

My husband and I have been to this restaurant several times. We have never been disappointed. The food is amazing. The service is impeccable. The interior is gorgeous. They have a wine list that fits in a binder about four inches thick. Highly recommended!

I dined at La Famiglia with my boyfriend on a Friday night during Restaurant Week Jan2009. Perhaps a Restaurant Week experience alone is not a good indication of the quality of a restaurant, but it seems as though La Famiglia has had many Res Week failures.
First of all, while we were waiting to be seated, an angry couple vented to the manager (loudly enough for everyone in the bar area to hear) about the rushed service and poor quality of food. They said they have had pleasant dining experiences at the restaurant before but on that particular evening they would have rather have eaten at the Olive Garden!
We were seated and eventually met the pushy sommelier, Mario. Mario was so keen on finding a perfect wine for us that he frantically flipped through the pages of their encyclopedia-like wine book for what seemed like 10 minutes. The wine book was in front of me, my seat was against a wall and the pages were nearly hitting my face and Mario's hand kept sweeping against my chest. I WAS SO DISGUSTED THAT I WANTED TO CRY. Instead we ordered a bottle of Chianti Classico and ordered our meal.
Learning from what the angry couple had said when we arrived, we enjoyed our meal slowly ? they can?t force your entree upon you if you haven?t finished our appetizer, right?
We were pleased with the meal. The crabcake was melt-in-your mouth delicious (albeit on the small side) and the ricotta gnocchi was fantastic (a hint to the other reviewers: it has ricotta cheese in it; it?s supposed to be a tiny bit ?mushier? than normal potato gnocchi). My boyfriend had the tilapia with white wine lemon sauce and diced tomatoes. It was cooked and presented superbly and tasted just as good. I had the risotto, which was delicious, piping hot and too big of a serving for me to finish. The dessert, a mini fruit tart, ricotta cheese cake and profiterole, was perfect.
Our waiter, Vittorio, was very attentive and polite and even apologized for the sommelier?s behavior.

Cons: Creepy wine steward, poor Resaurant Week quality

This is a great Italian restaurant. The food is outstanding The restaurant is located in old city. The steaks are highly recommended. They have a large bar to gather. It does get crowded quickly. It is an upscale restaurant.

I ate there with friends during Restaurant Week. The kindest thing I could say about the waitstaff was that they seemed to be exercising a policy of benign neglect. It was obvious that they took no particular interest in whether we had a pleasant dining experience there or not. My silverware was hurled in my general direction and I had to set my own place. When I went to the restroom, I returned to find that my napkin had not been refolded for me. The kicker was that the dessert had been served to my empty place, and when I asked my dining companions what it was, they told me the waiter hadn't bothered to introduce the dish!

I found the service to be utterly charmless. Worse, the food was strictly so-so. My friends ordered the veal and were rewarded with a sliver of meat under a gelatinous brown sauce, accompanied by piles of cold and gluey mashed potatoes. My risotto was slopped into the bowl with not a care as to the presentation of it. The flavor was acceptable, but well below the standard of risotto I could produce at home.

Yes, I'm sure the experience is better on a "regular night," but as one of my dining companions put it, "Come correct or don't come at all." If they can't be bothered to provide tasty meals and good service during Restaurant Week, then La Famiglia should not participate in it. In fact, I'd like to see them drummed out of the program entirely, as the experience we had there certainly does not reflect well upon Philly dining.

True class means having a standard of excellence, and adhering to it. You don't pick and choose when you are going to uphold the standard. Avoid this place.

I am amazed at some of these reviews, I have been dining at this restaurant for over 15 years and it is still the best. The quality and service are 2nd to none. When I need a lights out romantic dinner this is the spot. Yes, it is expensive but no more than 1/3 of the restaurants in Philly. They have earned their fantastic reputation. Their pasta with Pheasant is ridiculously good. I am huge fan of the Seans and their restaurants. Le Castagne is also off the charts.

I visited La Famiglia during Restaurant Week (September 2006). The service was acceptable, but nothing special. The food was edible, but nothing to brag about. (The eggplant was good though.) I realize a visit outside of Restaurant Week might yield more impressive results, however Restaurant Week is a time to sell your restaurant and encourage people to return. This simply did not happen and I will not return.

Group of us went to La Famiglia for restaurant week and had a truely aweful night. We didn't even see a (food-stained paper) menu for over an hour. Even at that point I was trying to be understanding because it was a busy night and restaurant week is probably not their favorite time of the year; But then the food came and it was nearly inedible. Gnocci's were overcooked until they were mush, polenta tasted like a salt lick; only thing that was OK was eggplant. My friend got the steak entre and it actually was inedible; we all tried it and it tasted like leather;ordered medium rare but cooked until it was rubbery. Everything else we got was only moderately better than that. I eat almost anything without complaining but I have had hot pockets that were gourmet meals compared to the trash they served us. They should have been embarassed to put that in front of us, it was insulting. I'm sure the experience would be different during a normal week but if that is the best they can do then they should not participate in restaurant week. There are other Italian restaurants in the area that are consistently very good (Radicchio, La Loconda) so I will never return to this place again.

If you're looking for a good italian restaurant in olde city, La Famiglia is your choice (rsvp recommended). All the food is made on site, I had the vodka rigatonia, it also came with a salad, that was better than most italian salads (just lettuce and oil).

The dessert tray is quite extensive and the pricing is moderate. $15-20 per meal, $5-8 dessert.

PROS: decor, food, service
CONS: crowded at night, rsvp

Wonderful atmosphere, great food, outstanding service. Nothing was overlooked.

I had a Mediterranean white fish prepared at tableside in a lobster sauce. It could not have possibly been prepared and served any better.

The fish was a very meaty white fish and literally fell apart when touched with the fork.

Maybe a little pricey for the portions served...but a nice dining experience.

"Wow", what a suprise after reading some not so flattering reviews here on Philadelphia CitySearch. The service was excellent, the food was terrific. Mr.Guiseppe (one of the owners)was a true gentleman. We arrived a half hour early and were seated promptly. After being given our choice of upstairs or downstairs dining.A "class act by far". A bit "overpriced" for the portions served (My husband says). Overall, a wonderful experience. We will definately be back. Your favorite dish: penne w/ prosciutto, primiezie salad
