This unique gift shop contains many treasures in its numerous rooms and is a consistent stop for me after I eat at The White Dog Cafe next door. The owner is very friendly and helpful and seems to always be up for a lively conversation. You will find conventional gifts here, such as bath and body products, as well as edgier ones, such as the "Poverty is a Weapon of Mass Destruction" button that I purchased earlier this year. Its University City Location makes parking difficult, but drive around and search for a spot- it's worth it!

The Black Cat is a very interesting store. They sell handicrafts from all over the globe. You can find all sorts of neat things, like knit accessories, baskets, paper products and even hemp products. I always load up on my favorite Burts Bees lip balm here. The shop is in a very historical building and it is very quaint. The staff is very knowledgeable about the pieces and are more than willing to share their knowledge with you. Each item really has a story behind it.

They have the best aromatherapy bath products at Black Cat. Bath salts and soaps that smell awesome and leave you relaxed or energized. All natural ingredients and cute packaging. They're great for gifts too.

The Black Cat is a quirky gift shop on one of the liveliest blocks in West Philly. People come here from all over to check out the fairly traded, hand-made jewelry & crafts, the offbeat cards & the provocative books. And of course they come here because The White Dog, arguably the best restaurant in the neighborhood, is right next door. Run by social activists, the shop caters to an offbeat crowd, & to those who just want to find something beautiful. Housed in a row of cozy Victorian brownstones with seemingly endless rooms, The Black Cat will have you purring for hours on end.

PROS: quirky gifts, fairly traded crafts, jewelry by local artists
CONS: tight parking
