Merchant_icon

In 2003, Nakama Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar made its appearance in Pittsburgh's trendy South Side. Savor the incredible creations with limitless options provided by our sushi chef, which are almost too beautiful to eat. Almost. Nakama is a hip, trendy scene where patrons can enjoy the knife-wielding skill and showmanship of our specially trained chefs, our unique appetizers and the best sushi in Pittsburgh. Our guests will be rewarded with frequent dining points upon joining our free VIP program. The private party room is available for private functions and large group dining.

Editorial by Citysearch

The Scene
Appropriately, "nakama" means "friend" in Japanese. And whether you're sipping cocktails at the sleek, wrap-around bar, sampling raw fish at the sushi station, or dining at one of the large hibachi tables, good times and good people abound. Sitting in a dimly lit room with total strangers may sound awkward, but nothing brings folks together like the collective misuse of chopsticks. By the end of the meal, you'll be clinking Buddha mugs and ordering another round of sake.

The Food
A specially trained chef prepares food before your eyes. He slices, dices, and juliennes with lightning speed. All entrees--from sesame chicken to hibachi scallops--are served with a flambe, soup, and assorted sides. Starving? Spring for the Buddha Feast which gets you all of the above plus lobster tail for two, dessert and green tea. Nakama will even throw in a photograph and a traditional Japanese gong toast. Now that's what friends are for.

Key Points

  • Voted Best Sushi in Pittsburgh
  • Private party room
  • Free VIP program

The Inside Scoop

  1. What to Drink - Try one of the specialty rum concoctions in a complimentary Buddha mug. It'll bring you luck.
  2. Parking - Limited parking on the South Side is the only drawback to dining at Nakama. But it's worth a bus trip for food this good.
  3. The Extras - Sign up for Nakama's VIP program and start earning points for free food and drinks.

Nakama is a wonderful restaurant for a special night. The food was incredible and the service impeccable. We were sat on time and were not rushed from our table in any way. It was refreshing to sit down and enjoy a meal for over two hours without being rushed to leave.

It was probably the best dining experience that I have had in a long time. The customer service was great from the moment we arrived to the second that we left. I have always enjoyed hibatchi dining and then I went to Nakama and realize all that I had been missing. Wow! What a fantastic time. The atmosphere is artistic, the service is great, the chefs are adept and food is delectable. I first went with a friend and a bunch of people I had not met before. It was a great setting to talk and get to know each other. Since then I have been there for lunch and dinner for dates, lunch with my mom, and special occasions. One thing is always true, a great time is had by all. I highly recommend this restaurant for any and all outtings and don't forget to join and become a VIP member for the star treatment by management and great discounts sent to you regularly!

Pros: Great fun all around.

Cons: Parking

Nakama is a great place to dine, with fun atmosphere, and the best sushi in Pittsburgh. I really am not the biggest sushi fan, but like it here. However, I will go and eat the best meal in Pittsburgh, Bob's Triple Combination any day of the week! Don't miss it!

Pros: valet

Cons: too crowded sometimes, but you will see why!

I have personally been going to this restuarant, since before it actually opened, as I installed the phone equipment for them. From taste testing food then till this day, I haven't gone anywhere but NAKAMA for sushi!! Even just to stop in for a drink during happy hour, it has always been a great experience. Usually at the sushi bar, Key, is the greatest. He always comes up with some new combination to try, one of the Nicest guys around. In addition they have a wide range of beverages, as I like to try differtent types of wine and beer. Guiness, hoegarden, wine or just the normals... something will always go with the excellent food, no matter what your taste is. Take a date, I have, and they have all been great, well at least the food was. Hope you try it and your experience is as good as mine. Keep up the good work.

Cons: try to make a reservation if its a weekend but the wait for the sushi bar isnt that bad

Ratings_icons The filet melts in your mouth...

pittfan29

I love this place!!! My boyfriend loves the sushi and I love the filet and I mean it when I say it melts in your mouth! I never liked fried rice until I started to frequent this establishment, the food is just amazing! I've brought my parents as well as my boyfriend's parents from out of town to experience it first hand and everyone has thoroughly enjoyed it!

Pros: The food is amazing and the atmosphere allows for an open table conversation!

Cons: Great date place once you know each other a little, but not good for one on one conversation.

Ratings_icons Great weekend lunch spot

cgentile

My husband and I went for lunch on a Sunday and had no problem getting a seat right away (no reservations). It was our first time at this type of restaurant. We were curious about the cuisine, but no clue what the terminology meant. Our server and chef were very knowlegable and helpful. Everything was delicious!! We can't wait to go back.

Pros: service, value, quality

Ratings_icons great lunch value

valwilt

My co-workers and I are always looking for a fun lunch spot on the Southside but found some of the better restaurants a little expensive for lunch. Look no further than Nakama. The food is excellent and the portions relatively generous for a Japanese restaurant. You can have lunch for less than $10.00 including an appetizer and there is lots to chose from besides sushi. You have a choice of sitting at the "table" and watching your food be prepared or at a private table in the bar/sushi area. It was so much fun dining with my co-workers that I brought my teenage children to lunch the next week and they also enjoyed it.

Pros: great value, excellent food

Cons: parking

Ratings_icons Always a great time

gonzogirl21

I would just like to say how much i enjoy going to Nakama, it quickly became one of my favorite places to go. I just recently went for my birthday and had a great time. My group consisted of six people, and we made our reservations over the internet through Nakama's website so we didnt have to wait very long to be seated. However while we did wait we enjoyed a few drinks at the bar, and some hanalei and spider rolls which are my favorites. Our chef was great, he was very interactive and enteraining. He got the whole table involved in his cooking and performance. I would highly recommend Nakama for anyone who has a special event to celebrate or even just would like to go out to dinner for the evening.

Pros: seating accomodations, sushi bar, easy to make reservations

I had my 33rd birthday party lunch at Nakama and the food was great. The chef did a great job. We had a large party and we were able to sit at 1 table and everyone's food was served hot and we all ate at the same time. I normally do not order suishi but the seared Ahi Tuna was out of this world. I will return again.

Ratings_icons Great place to bring out-of-towners

yearseve

I have been to Nakama twice in about a month and a half. The first time I brought someone from out of town. They wanted to eat somewhere that was a little different and fun. I had heard good things about Nakama and had been there for drinks, so I dicided to take a chance. I am so glad I did. The food was delicious and the service was great. We even had our own mini magic show in the bar area while we were waiting - someone hired by the restaurant. Our four of hearts is forever (or until someone knocks it off) on the ceiling near the bar. I had a lot of fun and would recommend Nakama to anyone, especially out-of-towners.

I was introduced to nakama by a group of nurses that I used to work with, having never tried sushi before, i was pleasantly surprised by the variety of types of sushi offered. I have eaten both at the sushi bar and at the hibachi tables and have been pleased with both service and quality of food. I never leave Nakama without a smile on my face and a great dining experience.
The bartenders are great also, I always can trust them to make me a martini that is sure to please.....

Pros: good bartenders, variety of app's, and sushi choices

Nakama is extremely sophisticated, well structured and complete with creative decor. This japanese sushi bar is something to visit when in Pittsburgh. I've made it a ritual after work Friday happy hour bar, and you should too!

Pros: Reservations are highly regarded.

Cons: If you make reservations and everyone is not present at once, you will not be seated.

I took a friend here for her 27th birthday celebration. I called ahead for reservations and asked that the special "birthday" dessert, along with singing and gong playing, to make the evening special. The service was exceptional and the food was delicious. Our waiter was polite and pleasant despite the growing dinner crowd. Check it out! It's an experience you won't forget.

Pros: Excellent food, hip atmosphere, great service

Cons: Parking, large crowds around peak hours

I've only been once, but the food was very good. If you enjoy Hibachi Steakhouses, the atmosphere could not be better. It was loud and exciting, and you will enjoy it with an entire dinner party or just a date. The selection of Japanese beers was also appealing to me. I will definitely go back again.

For the past two years I've been treated to Nakama as a b-day surprise. We normally have a group of 20 people and Nakama is a great place for larger groups. I'm not much of a sushi eater, but the rest of their menu is superb. I ALWAYS get an order of the fried rice to go although I leave with left overs and a full stomach! I highly recommend Nakama for everyday eating or for special occasions!

We love to go out to eat and this is one of our favorites. It is very upscale but casual. All ages are comfortable in the bar area and the dining is superb. It is great for an economical night out if you stay in the front for sushi or go all out for a full meal cooked in front of you. There can be quite a wait on the weekends so it is a good idea to go early and be prepared to wait for a table. The drinks at the bar are excellent and make the wait much more tolerable.
If you love Japanese....don't miss this one!!

Pros: Great atmosphere and food

Cons: Not a place if you are in a hurry

The atmosphere is very intimate but also is very welcoming to a group of friends. The dim lighting, personal chef and large amounts of delicious food encourage customers to come back for more. Make sure you make a reservation, because even though this place is well worth the wait, the excitement Nakama brings may make it hard to stand!

Pros: Atmosphere

Cons: Parking

This place is so much fun and once is not enough! Each time I have been there it is equally if not more fun. The chefs are very interactive and willing to have lots of fun including table competitions laughing joking and just plain amazing skills. And the food is GREAT! If you take a mixed age crowd then I recommend earlier in the week and avoid Friday and weekends due to it being much noisier but if you like the crowd atmosphere weekends are perfect. You will definitely have a dining experience to remember!

Pros: Tons of fun while eating great food.

Cons: You may be seated with people you don't know but it is a great way to meet people.

Nakama is one of the most exquisite additions to the South Side. The food is amazing, whether you are going there for a full dinner, or just for drinks at happy hour. When I have guests or family visiting Pittsburgh, I ALWAYS bring them to Nakama. It works for all ages, all occasions, and all types of people. I can bring my cousins there for happy hour to show off the South Side, I can bring my grandmother there for an exceptional dinner, and I can meet some of my friends there for a reasonably priced and delicious lunch. I've had celebratory dinners at Nakama.. for birthdays and welcome home dinners .. and I've gone there somtimes with just one friend for intimate conversation over some sushi. Nakama has it all -- a lovely atmosphere, friendly service, and delicious food. If you're visiting Pittsburgh, Nakama is definitely one of the places you must stop by during your stay.

Pros: Exquisite atmosphere

Cons: Parking can sometimes be a hassle in the South Side, but valet is available.
