Message from Nakama Japanese Steakhouse

Merchant_icon

In 2003, Nakama Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar made its appearance in Pittsburgh's trendy South Side. Savor the incredible creations with limitless options provided by our sushi chef, which are almost too beautiful to eat. Almost. Nakama is a hip, trendy scene where patrons can enjoy the knife-wielding skill and showmanship of our specially trained chefs, our unique appetizers and the best sushi in Pittsburgh. Our guests will be rewarded with frequent dining points upon joining our free VIP program. The private party room is available for private functions and large group dining.

Editorial by

The Scene
Appropriately, "nakama" means "friend" in Japanese. And whether you're sipping cocktails at the sleek, wrap-around bar, sampling raw fish at the sushi station, or dining at one of the large hibachi tables, good times and good people abound. Sitting in a dimly lit room with total strangers may sound awkward, but nothing brings folks together like the collective misuse of chopsticks. By the end of the meal, you'll be clinking Buddha mugs and ordering another round of sake.

The Food
A specially trained chef prepares food before your eyes. He slices, dices, and juliennes with lightning speed. All entrees--from sesame chicken to hibachi scallops--are served with a flambe, soup, and assorted sides. Starving? Spring for the Buddha Feast which gets you all of the above plus lobster tail for two, dessert and green tea. Nakama will even throw in a photograph and a traditional Japanese gong toast. Now that's what friends are for.

Key Points

  • Voted Best Sushi in Pittsburgh
  • Private party room
  • Free VIP program

The Inside Scoop

  1. What to Drink - Try one of the specialty rum concoctions in a complimentary Buddha mug. It'll bring you luck.
  2. Parking - Limited parking on the South Side is the only drawback to dining at Nakama. But it's worth a bus trip for food this good.
  3. The Extras - Sign up for Nakama's VIP program and start earning points for free food and drinks.

Ratings_icons Best Cosmos in the city, too!

I luv this place! The food is terrific, always fresh. The service is as quick as can be expected from a popular restaurant that is always crowded! You will always see someone you know there which makes it pretty fun. The bartenders also make the best cosmos around! Do you know what a pain it is to try to explain how to make a cosmo?? Never had to at Nakama. We usually go about 3 times a month or more and when friends come to Pittsburgh, we take them there.

Pros: great food, great location, great atmosphere

Cons: sometimes way too crowded

Excellent service and the food was beyond my expectation. I have eaten sushi in many places across the world and this is one of the best. Presentation was well done and the price was the best part. I would recommend this place to anyone who likes good sushi and Japenese food.

Pros: excellent dining with a reasonable cost

Cons: recommend reservations as it gets crowded

The service and food are always excellent. I have tried almost everything on the menu and never got something I didn't enjoy! If you go on a busy Friday or Saturday enjoy a drink at the well stocked bar and order the sampler platter you won't be dissappointed.

Nakama is one of my all-time favorite places. When I take friends there for the first time, they rave. No other Japanese steakhouse that I have been to has food as excellent as Nakama's. If you're planning on going there for dinner it is always best to make a reservation and allow time to find parking, but other than that the food is to die for and the atmosphere is great.

Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Drinks

Cons: Parking

Nakama is not only a place for great food, but a great place to get drinks with friends or co-workers. The bar drinks are among the best and fanciest in the Southside. I would definitely recommend it as a trendy place to meet for drinks and dinner.

My first experience at Nakama was on my birthday a couple years back. We were seated right away and the food was to die for! The chef's are amazing. My fiance and I soon went back, but just for sushi this time and we became a VIP members. Nakama's sushi is like none other. I have eaten at Nakama on over a dozen occasions, including having my work Christmas party there; everytime, I have experienced amazing service and fantastic food. I have recently eaten at a few different sushi bars and japanese steakhouses (not in PA) and none can even come close to Nakama's high standards. It is truly a jem nestled in the heart of Pittsburgh's Historic South Side.

Pros: Generous portions, amazing ambience.

You wont find better sushi in the city- or martinis. The sexpotini is my favorite! Their ahi tuna is out of this world too! When you walk in to Nakama you'll forget that you are in Pittsburgh- you'll thin you're somewhere like NYC or Miami--you wont find an atmosphere like this anywhere else in the 'burgh!

Pros: extensive martini list

Cons: the bar area gets very crowded on thursday nights- more so than friday

As a Parent of three young children me and my husband find it hard to find a restaurant where we can enjoy our meal as well as our children. We prefer our kids eat healthy and not the typical hot dog, chicken fingers, grilled cheese everyone else offers for kids meals. They also stay very entertained thru Dinner and it allows me and my husband to enjoy ours. My kids love Nakama and it is their top pick.

Pros: great food and entertainment in one

Ratings_icons Hands-Down Favorite Restaurant in the Burg!

littlbit72

I have become a devotee of Nakama and make it a point to eat there a few times a month. The sushi is the best I've eaten ANYWHERE! Even in my travels, I have found no other japanese restaurant that even comes close. The Hanalei and Boston Rolls are not to be missed!!! I've even taken friends to Nakama who swore they didn't like sushi and they've always left with a whole different outlook. The service is almost always superb (everyone has an off day now and again) and the food is ALWAYS spectacular! Parking on the South Side is always an issue, but Nakama has offset that by offering valet parking - well worth the extra $$.

Pros: Fantastic sushi!

Ratings_icons Definitely THE place to eat.

ippy888

Nakama is definitely the place to go if you want to have fun, delicious food (i recommend the Kobe beef and any of their sushi), and yummy drinks (I highly recommend the sexpotini). Ive never had a bad time at Nakama - its always great fun with your friends and even with the people you get to meet at your table. Although its always busy - that just adds to the atmosphere! The bar is always a great place to get drinks (they have a great list of really good cocktails) while you wait for your table. Its definitely THE place to eat if you want the whole package.

Pros: Atmosphere. Large menu. Yummy food.

Cons: Parking.

Ratings_icons Excellent Sushi and Atmosphere

I recommend Nakama to anyone whether the person is a local or from out of town. I met some very cool bartenders there who I've seen outside of Nakama and they continued their friendly personalities. The sushi is very good and I've compared their sushi to quite a few places. It is a great happy hour place as others have noted. The owner is also very cool...while I've only had email communication she is very active in the Burg. The only thing I hope for is the non-smoking bill to be passed. This will get me there a little more often.

Pros: Happy Hour, Service, Sushi

alicialotti

I heard about Nakama through a friend, and because I am an avid sushi lover I couldn't wait to try it. I have tried sushi throughout the United States, and (I make it a point to wherever I go), and Pittsburgh's Nakama definitely takes the cake! They have an amazing variety of sushi, as well as a yummy drink menu (My personal fav is the Cosmo). The past two times I have visited I ordered a roll and shared another one with a friend, and our bill is extremely affordable and we leave equally as satisfied. Also, Nakama is popular and always busy, but I've gotten a seat at the sushi bar very quickly every visit. A must try!

Pros: Great Sushi; Friendly Staff

Cons: Sometimes crowded at the sushi bar

Ratings_icons Good place but according to these reviews, definetly much overrated

td0179

I was reading the reviews, and since the Nakama email with $10 offer for a good review was passed out, there were additional 5 reviews in 10min timeline talking about how great Nakama is. Well, for people that are looking forward to the certificate, just want to say don't get your hopes too high. I, similarly to the guy that posted a negative review, had the experience where I received a certificate in the mail, took three friends at the dinner - bill totaled $160 and at the end guess what? - the $10 certificate does not apply because we should've told the waitress at the beginning that we were going to use one. While food was good, the customer service tryuly lacked.

Ratings_icons Great Happy Hour - good place to go with a group of people

dodsonb642

I have been to Nakama 5 times and will continue to go back. The food is very good and I like the happy hour crowd (mostly younger professionals). The only advice I have is, if you are going in a large group, or going with any number of people on the weekend, make reservations because it is typically crowded.

Nakama, located in the SouthSide of the city isn't your ordinary Japanese Steak House. It is a bustling establishment every night of the week with a crowd covering every social and age spectrum showing that Nakama really does appeal to everyone. The food is excellant, the presentation is aweing, and the staff is courteous, even during the busiest times. I am new to the city and a few friends took me to Nakama. It was the first time I had been to this type of restaurant and I had a great time. The food was delicious, the show the chef put on was really fun to watch, and the atmosphere was really neat. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys japanese food.

I first tried sushi at Nakama a year ago, and since I have become a sushi lover. I now eat sushi everywhere I go that it is served, and I can't find any as good as that served at Nakama. The seafood at Nakama is so fresh. I have become a regular at Nakama. I go about once a month, and have never had anything but the best of times there. The food is exceptional, the chef is always entertaining, and the service is always good. Nakama is the place to go for entertaining, high quality dining, whether with a group or on a date. Look, quite simply, this is a top place to eat in Pittsburgh. Our server was outstanding. I had so many questions and she was right there to help with each one despite being very busy. The show was fascinating to watch and the food was just incredible. I thought I wasn't big on this style, but my shrimp was delicious, my steak was perfect and the rice was flawless. We also got an appetizer on our visit which was the perfect size for two. My girlfriend and I chose Nakama after our 3 hour drive to town and we didn't regret one bit of it! In fact, Nakama is now the place we PLAN on going every time we're in Pittsburgh. I think if you don't like this place, you're missing the point of great food and great atmosphere.

To end, I had a few more questions after I left about tipping and such and I had the friendliest, most helpful email response I've received from anyone. This place works hard to be great and they are just that: great.

Pros: Food, show, fantastic service

Cons: southside traffic at night

I love Nakama's....the food, the atmosphere, and the overall ambiance is spectular. The chefs are great especially Luke and Miso! In fact, Luke is awesome...we took a family member out for graduation and he treated her like a princess giving her extra attention and putting the biggest smile on her face :-)

Additionally, the service it great...you do not have to wait a long time for your food and everything is seasoned to perfection. This restaurant is family friendly but also great for a date or business meeting. If you haven't tried Nakama's yet you have to get there ASAP!
I know you are going to love it!
