Our cat died earlier this week at the age of nineteen and a half years. For his entire life, he was cared for at the Narbeth Animal Hospital. I could not envision any animal receiving better attention. For many years, the care consisted in routine, preventative medicine, which was invariably administered thoughtfully and kindly, and which seemed to keep pace with new developments in veterinary medicine. During the last two years of his life, our cat's health began to fail. He had serious bouts of anemia and finally fell prey to renal failure. It was during this time, that the Narbeth Animal Hospital demonstrated its highest levels of excellence. Dr. Stetz always managed to find the perfectly appropriate level of conservative care??the modalities that would help to prolong our cat's life without assaulting the quality of that life. She always showed patience in the face of endless questions and obviously cared personally about our pet??not hesitating to phone on occasion to inquire how he was doing. The same level of gentle and concerned care was characteristic of a host of technical assistants at the hospital. All of this contributed importantly, I believe, to the length and quality of our cat's life, as well as to our own sense of assurance that everything reasonable was always being done to help him. The Narbeth Animal Hospital is not a fancy facility, but it offers what one needs most: expert veterinary medicine, administered with a high level of humane care.

Dr. Stetz should not be allowed to practice veterinary medicine on exotics. My guinea pig was brought in to see her after he became sick at an old age. We later found out that he had impacted bowels, which is a common issue for guinea pigs, especially as they get older. Dr. Stetz, however, did not diagnose him. Instead, she told us that he was "just old." She also clipped his teeth without asking our permission, and she clipped them too short so he started to bleed. My little guinea pig died a few days later, and I blame Dr. Stetz for being an incompetent veterinarian and failing to diagnose a common guinea pig ailment. If she had done her job, we could have done something for him. At the very least, we could have made him more comfortable as he passed on.

I called and got an appointment. They were courteous on the phone. I arrived with my dog on time. Everything seemed fine. Both tech and vet took the time to get to know my dog when they first met him. While waiting for some blood work, which was done the same day in house, I looked up the online reviews and saw things that did not fit my experience at all. I found them competent, friendly, and actually informative -- they helped me understand more about my dog's diagnosis that any other vet consulted. We will return. As for the price, we it seemed competitive.

I should have read these reviews before I called and left a message that I needed in-home euthanasia for my cat but I was too distraught. I was counting on saying goodbye to my beloved cat in my home without the stress of going to the vet for him and me. My call was never returned. When I'm feeling better I'm going to look into reporting this incompetent vet to a national organization: reading the other reviews broke my heart and something should be done about this vet.

I had my two cats neutered at this facility......not only was the price absolutely ridiculous; but, when I went to pick them up the next day, the one was still bleeding. I wanted to ask Dr. Stetz about this but the tech said she was busy. I paid and never went back. I also do not like how they do not let you go back to the exam room with your pet....we now have a dog and I will never take him here! We are using Township Line Animal Hospital on Landsdowne Rd in Upper Darby....they are fantastic!!

I went there for two visits for my puppy and will never return again. The place is very run down, and dirty. The techs seem like they do not know what they are doing. Dr. Stetz isn't friendly. The second time I went there for my puppy's shots, there was a man behind the desk who made a very rude comment about a client's dog after Dr. Stetz said something to him. "Who would want that stupid dog?" They also wouldn't give me a receipt for my visit so I could submit it to the pet insurance and I had to wait for 20 minutes just for one. This place isn't even big enough to be a good hospital. It doesn't even deserve one star. Save yourself money, time and your pet's life DO NOT GO THERE!

Two years ago we took our holland lop, Sugar, to Dr Stetz. We only had the bunny for 6 weeks and it suddenly had severe intestinal distress. She looked at our 2 lb rabbit who was dehydrated and loosing control of it's bowels and prescribed two kinds of antibiotics and sent us home. I gave our bunny the meds and it died within an hour. I then got online and did research and corresponded with a doctor that deals with rabbits. Our bunny was not handled correctly by Dr Stetz and should've been immediately put on an IV etc... I talked with House Rabbit Society who told us about Radnor Vets in Wayne. Two years later we finally found a bunny to love and Radnor vet to take care of him. Lesson learned, all because you have a rabbit pictured on your business card does not mean you have any business treating rabbits.

I've only had good experiences with Dr Stetz. She is business like, which others may perceive as cold. I am always able to get an appointment within 24 hours. My cats have been patients at Narberth Animal Hospital for 10 years now. The front desk is at time disorganized but never incompetent. I feel confident taking my beloved cats to Dr Stetz and will continue to do so.

We have brought our cats and dogs to Dr. Stetz for three years for well visits and have been very pleased with the service. Recently we have had to bring a couple of our older cats for sick visits. Dr. Stetz has done an outstanding job of explaining the problem and discussing the different treatment options. We have been very pleased with the care provided. One of our cats needed surgery last week and we felt very comfortable that Dr. Stetz would take good care of him. He is now back at home and fully recovered.

I agree the decor is lacking. I was so scared reading these reviews after taking my cat there, that I went and got a 2nd opinion when he recently was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer. I went to another vet, then another place for ultrasound. Both places confirmed what Jill had said at Narberth. They both agreed on her treatment protocol. She was not incorrect or incompetent. Unless anyone here posting actually took the time to get a valid, 2nd opinion by a vet - I think it's unfair to self diagnose or second guess and badmouth a professional without concrete evidence.

If you feel like keeping an incompetent vet in business, by all means - take your pet to Narberth Animal Hospital for its annual shots and checkups. But don't count on Dr. Stetz to detect any diseases or threatening but treatable conditions. If you do decide to trust your pet's well-being to this run-down outfit, you may very well end up as I: With a dead cat.
If you care for your animal, you should give your business and trust to one of the several high-quality animal hospitals in the area, Ardmore Animal Hospital is great. I don't give a dam how compassionate and "nice" the staff seem - it can't change the fact that Stetz is not a skilled veterinarian who should not be in business. Let her go work in a meat-packing plant - I don't care - I'm a vegetarian.

Our family had used Narberth Vet for quite a while and we have never been disappointed. Dr. Stetz and her staff have always taken great care of our pets. We recently had to have our 13 year old dog put to sleep and everyone at Narberth Animal Hospital was so kind and helpful during her illness. Our newly adopted dog loves it there too!The Cotton Family

I have used Narberth Animal Hospital for more than a decade for dogs and cats and have never experienced anything like what some of these other reviews describe. The staff has always been helpful and caring and I have recommended the practice without reservation to many people. If I had to suggest an improvement, it would be that the facilities could use some upgrading. It does feel like the place is stuck in the 70s in terms of decor, exam rooms, etc. Seems most of the patient files are still kept on 3x5 cards. The place seems a bit dog-eared, if you'll pardon the expression, but I have never had a negative experience with the staff.

Sorry to say it, but I agree with the poor ratings above. Brought my cat for a bath and was told I could pick him up by 6pm. I showed up at 5pm and they were closed. I waited for someone to return (from dinner?), called, called, and called. Nobody ever showed. I arrived first thing in the morning to pick him up. They were completely disorganized. They didn't charge me for overnight boarding. They didn't acknowledge any problems or mistakes either. I could have been ordering a Big Mac from McDonalds. "Thank you, come again."

I've had other poor experiences with Dr. Stetz over the years. I'm done.

Take my advice and take your animals elsewhere.

Years ago when Dr. Stetz was new here and Dr. Dieter's schedule was full we saw Dr. Stetz a few times. She was not very sharp or friendly, does not really connect with the animal or the owner. Then the dachsund was suddenly lame, we had to see Dr. Stetz, she said a UTI. It turned out to be two ruptured discs. After 2 days of UTI treatment and the inability to urinate, we demanded to see Dr. Dieter, and he sent us to PENN stat for surgery. A few more hours and he would have died from not urinating. Two or three years ago Dr. Stetz bought the practise from Dr. Dieter, then fired him. Now I never see a car in the lot. Everyone has her number. She is a ROTTEN vet, and should have no license to practise veterinary medicine.

but if there is, this is the practice I would sue. And I know of at least 5 other pet-owners in the area who feel the same way. In early May 2006, when my 8-year-old, high-energy Portuguese Water Dog suddenly became noticeably lethargic, lost his appetite and wasn't able to stand, I took him to Narberth Vets. After examination and bloodwork, Dr. Stetz determined that he had hemolytic enemia caused by Lyme Disease and started him on antibiotics and steroids. We returned every few days for more than 2 weeks for follow-up bloodwork and exams, but he did not seem to be improving even with changes to his antibiotic. After more than 3 weeks of no significant improvement, I decided to take him to U of Penn Veterinary Clinic where they told me he had advanced cancer with masses in most of his internal organs. There was nothing that could be done to save him. Without invasive biopsies, the vets could only guess that he had hemangiosarcoma as it is known to be extremely common in this breed. None of the vets there could understand how ANYBODY could have missed the classic signs of end stage cancer: flaccid muscle tone, lack of appetite & rapid weight loss, lethargy, etc. Not to mention the obvious results of thorough examination and blood sample analysis (that we had been paying for for over 3 weeks). He died less than 24 hours later. My family hardly had any time to adjust to this dramatically different prognosis. An earlier diagnosis may not have saved my dog's life, but it could have minimized his suffering. My dog had been seen regularly at Narberth Vets from 12 weeks old. He had every shot, diagnostic test and physical that was recommended. In addition to his annual spring physical, he even had expensive pre-anesthesia bloodwork and an additional exam in January or February '06 prior to dental cleaning. What was that supposed to screen for?I cannot bring back my dog nor get rid of the guilt that we didn't know what was truly wrong with him, so I derive my satisfaction by telling as many people as I can NOT to use this veterinary practice. Every anecdote that I hear in return only confirms my belief that Dr. Stetz is no diagnostician and this is no place to bring a beloved family pet.

For over 40 plus years I have heard the caged dogs barking non-stop while shopping next door to the so called hospital. I have heard horror storied my entire life about that place. They kennel dogs. I was told by an owner of a dog kennelled there that she could not pick her dog up on the scheduled pick up day. Owner went there to find her dog so heavly sedated she had to carry him out. Too small a facility for kenneling. Why can't the Township of Lower Merion or the SPCA investigate. Please don't take you dogs there for kennelling. I'm pegging you not to. Maybe Dr. D. Hyde a former vet that worked there can be interviewed to find out what goes on there. He now works at 610 525-5041. Maybe the 3 local t.v. stations can investigage. Maybe someone can once and for all shut that place down.

I recently brought my 6 month old English bulldog puppy (the love of my life) to Narberth Animal Hospital. We dropped him off in the morning for a routine nuturing procedure. I received a phone call later that day that my dog was dead. Dr. Stetz had no explanation as to why it happened. It was obvious that it was neglect on her part. If you love your animals PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not let her near him/her. -Amanda

PROS:
CONS: neglectful and cold-hearted vet

The head vet, Dr. Stetz, either did not recognize the dire situation of my cat, or simply neglected to tell me. My cat died a day and a half later when I brought her into the UPenn vet hospital, too late to save her. Her death was completely preventable, if I had known about the serious condition she was in and had brought her to UPenn earlier. When confronted, Dr. Stetz was slightly curious, but had no other reaction, and was unwilling to consider the possibility that she might have mishandled the situation. Please don't let this happen to you or the animals you love.

I went here back when I had a cat. It is not the nicest looking place, either on the outside or the inside, but the staff there is really good. The care that the animals get seems to be frist rate. The price is the only downside. In the couple times that I have been able to compare this place to others, it has alwasy come out to cost more (probably due to its Main Line location). Regardless, if you love your pets, then price is never an issue and this animal hospital will serve you well.

PROS: Good care
CONS: Price, and atmosphere

To be fair, this vet is located on the Main Line so you would expect it to be a little pricey but from my experience they are toward the high end. The pet care was good though although I did not like how they bring the animal to the back and you have to remain in the waiting area. I prefer vets that do their tests/shots with you in the room because I think it makes it less scary for your pet.

The pet care was good though although I did not like how they bring the animal to the back and you have to remain in the waiting area. I prefer vets that do their tests/shots with you in the room because I think it makes it less scary for your pet.
