Editorial by

In Short
This is a perennially successful bar and restaurant that caters to office workers by day and a mix of neighbors and theatergoers by night. The beautiful, curving brass and timber bar was handmade by the owner, who also sandblasted his own windows and refitted the many antique fixtures. The walls are plasted with playbills, as well as vintage photos and prints from the hundreds of shows that have played at the Forrest Theater next door.

Key Points

  • Daily specials- lunch/dinner
  • Great for special occasions
  • Great food at a great price!

The Inside Scoop

  1. Where To Sit - Upstairs is another bar, which is an enchanting getaway during the winter months. If you're lucky, you'll get to hang out with some of the well-known actors who tread the Forrest stage as they relax after a show. Your best bet is to secure a bar stool and hold on to it--things get pretty chaotic here on a regular basis.

Ok, they have the greatest WINGS in town and they knwo it - there's no other. We go just for the wings and nothing else. That'sone place that I can say I don't need to see the menu.

A favorite of mind and colleagues at work. We always enjoy going in for a bite or beverage of your choice after a show or a long day at work. They have great selection and very friendly staff. I would definitely recommend to a friend.

Ratings_icons Great Irish Food!

margery s. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 4,149

This is a great stop for a hot meal and a "Smithwicks" before going to the theatre. I enjoy the nightly special menu so much that I seldom get to the regular menu. This has a warm, friendly atmosphere. Make a reservation if you have theatre tickets. Many people like to make this part of their night out in Philadelphia for dinner and a show. Have an Irish coffee!

Ratings_icons Good for Before the Theatre

Lori L. | insider Insider | Rank: 17,791

If you are on your way to the Walnut Street Theatre this is a great place to get a bite to eat. It is very upscale bar/tavern food with personality. If you are a beer drinker this is a good place to get something good on draft. Lots of activity and noisey but in a fun city sort of way. Good place to hang out with friends too. I had burritos and they were yummy. I will go back.

Ratings_icons never order food there

dulcy

I couldn't get a dinner order placed as the lone bartender was busy filling drinks- then she got the food order wrong and then the food was wilted and poorly done. Her customer service was blatantly absent and she kept correcting the wait staff in a very stern manner in front of the customer.

Pros: cold beer

Cons: very poor service at the bar by waitress and waiter

Ratings_icons Great Pub Grub and an EXCELLENT beer selection

hurley565

Moriarty's has a great neighborhood bar/restaurant feel to it. Just as important, if not more, the pub grub is really good(wings, etc.). Also, if you want a great draft beer selection(with a couple of Belgians on tap), this is the place. Very good service too.

Pros: Beer Selection, Wings

Ratings_icons Horrible

RNsassy

Entered the restaurant, was asked if we wanted to sit at a tiny table, squished in a corner... not sure what the alternative was. We had a speaker directly overhead and the music was LOUD. We asked the waitress if the music could be turned down - to her credit, she did ask someone, but was told no. It took a long time for the wings to come out, and, honestly, they weren't too bad. Certainly wouldn't call them the best in the city, though. Dinner arrived - the Shepard's Pie was inedible. I sent it back nearly untouched, and the waitress never asked why I hadn't eaten any of it. She left us with our bill for 15 minutes - I finally took it to the bar, but the bartender refused to take it. Another waitress took the check and tried to ring it up. She said my card was no good... turns out the swipe thing was broken! AWFUL experience!

Pros: Cold beer

Cons: Food was terrible!

Ratings_icons what?

Phillysouldancer75

I went here twice in one week. First time - impressed by the average food for a pretty cheap and convenient happy hour....ok, that was nice. So I went back with a friend a few days later.

Second time I went --- mysteriously the waitress demanded my ID for collateral for my friend and I (which are very unpretentious late 30 something women) to eat outside - and have beers OUT FRONT....? during happy hour. I could understand if I looked like a drunken teenager...but why all of the sudden THIS time?

rules are rules --- but it was shadey...then she was impossible to track down for drink refills and the check...

note to management --- keep your rules, drink prices, and service consistent - it reeks of being unprofessional otherwise...there is TOO much competition on this street for that nonsense.

Ps - Irish pub never asked for my id....?!

Pros: location is convenient, cheap happy hour

Cons: seriously - are you serious? Bad service

Ratings_icons Good happy hour/beer selection- average food

cgl4

They have a good selection of beers on tap with a nice happy hour for beers. The food is average- canned mushrooms on the burgers. Canned enchilada sauce without much flavor on the Mexican. . Service was good and quick and staff generally pleasant. . Nice atmosphere.

Pros: Nice Atmosphere. Good beer selection on tap.

Cons: Average unimaginative food.

Ratings_icons Can't wait to go back

fishgirl314

Looked for days on Citysearch to find the perfect place for some family and friends to meet. Wanted a place with decent food, service, beers, ambiance, and above all, wanted to feel comfortable and relaxed. After reading many reviews, settled on Moriarty's and it did not disappoint! First I called the restaurant with a couple of questions and the girl that answered the phone was very pleasant and helpful. Explained what I was looking for in seating and she was happy to oblige. Making a reservation about an hour before our arrival was not a problem either. When we first got there I loved the feeling of the place. Cozy, not cramped. Busy, not loud. The person I spoke to on the phone greeted us, and let us know it would be a few minutes until they could seat us (that was fine, we were a tad early). When she did seat us, it was to a booth where the table moved. If you have ever sat at a booth where the table did not move, you'll understand why this is appreciated. The skinny's could move it closer and the not so skinny's were given more room. Then there was the service. Our server was great. On top of things but not always interrupting, very helpful with the menu also. Only 2 small things bothered me. She didn't give her name, and didn't smile much. But that didn't detract from the very good service she gave us. The food: tried the wings per other reviews and while the were very good, I can't say they were the BEST I've ever had. I also didn't like the very thin blue cheese "sauce" served on the side. Taste was good, but like it thicker. 2 of us ordered the burger with blue cheese and bacon and from the way it read on the menu, we expected a pile of bc crumbles on top. Nope, only the thin sauce on the side. That was the only real disappointment though. Our burgers were cooked exactly as we asked (med and mr). The salmon and shepard's pie were excellent. All in all, can't wait to go back. Won't wait for a visit from family next time!!

Pros: Nice, helpful staff, good food and brews.

Cons: Blue cheese 'sauce'

Ratings_icons Best wings anywhere, ever.

LTS04

I have eaten wings at nearly every bar in center city Philadelphia, and in hundreds of restaurants and bars in the US. Moriarty's wings are the best I've ever eaten. The service is excellent and the beers on tap are diverse and reasonably priced. If you're in town for a show or a game, definitely stop in. If you live in NE Philly, make the trip. Nothing up in Mayfair or Tacony compares to this.

Pros: The wings.

Cons: Other menu items are just ok.

Ratings_icons Wings That I Can't Live Without!

prwagner3

I lived near Moriarity's for 6 years and the wings kept me coming back. I now live in South Philly and make the trip just to have more!

It's a very busy place, so it can sometimes be hard to get a table and the waiters are very busy. But the wings are the best in Philly!

Pros: Buffalo Wings!!!!

Cons: Very Busy

Ratings_icons awesome beer and wings

ctjoe

They really do live up to their reputation on the hot wings. I ordered them being hungry, expecting them to be par for the course. I was wrong. They were the best wings I have had to date anywhere. The portion was huge also. Their beer selection is outstanding in a town full of bars with great beer. It gets very crowded, ttry to get in early for food ( 6 ), later for bar life. Highly recommended, a pleasant surprise that surpassed my expectations.

Pros: Tremendous wings, great beer

Cons: can get crowded

Ratings_icons Great burgers

CenterCity

Love the big juicy burgers and the fun atmosphere. Can be a little noisy and crowded, but that's its charm. Good prices, good food, decent portions. Wish they'd lose the trendy new sidewalk cafe - sidewalk is way too narrow for the tables, and that "side street" is just a glorified alley.

Pros: Burgers, atmosphere

Cons: Sidewalk tables, karaoke (but I hate all karaoke)

phlfrdm

Cozy, dimly lit place. Irish fare without attitude; waitstaff are so down-to-earth. Food is great (especially he appetizers) and not overpriced. It is always relatively easy to get a seat at the bar. If you come with a group, staff are happy to accomodate and seat you as soon as possible.

Pros: food, waitstaff

Cons: sometimes noisy

This is a very chill place that can be a little loud. They have a ton of beer on tap and a large menu. I went when it was packed, had a 1/2 hour wait, yet the food came out in a flash. The food is great. It's in a great location. I would go back often.

Pros: Prices, Service, Food, Beer

Cons: Loud, Parking

Ratings_icons Good Variety & Homey Feel

jaduwe

I am slightly hesitant to write a good review for Moriarty's, because I don't want you to steal my seat at the bar! This is a wonderful homey place that is great for it's wide variety of beers and menu choices. (Irish soup is my favorite.) They serve Philly's best wings, awesome traditional Irish cuisine, but steer clear of the Mexican food section... you could do better, it's very generic. (Sorry guys:)

Pros: Bartenders, Ambience, TV's

Cons: Mexican Menu

Ratings_icons I love it, I love it, I love it!

raquel7408

I've read a few of the reviews here that say Moriarty's is no good, but I live right down the street and I'd rather spend my hard earned cash on good food (like Moriarty's huge array of Mexican, American, and Irish food) and good people(the owners of the restuarant are very hands-on). I attended their annual New Year's Eve bash and it was AMAZING! The food, the drinks, and the music were great. They have a second floor bar is which actually really nice since it's non-smoking. Overall, Moriart's is always on my favorite's list.

Pros: great food, nice wait-staff, pretty building

Cons: parking

My girlfriend and I happened to be in the area and stopped into Moriarty's just because the menu looked interested. We were pleasantly surprised. The food was excellent. The chips for the chips and salsa side order were very good, although the salsa was probably supermarket quality. I had the corned beef special sandwich (corned beef, cole slaw and russian dressing on rye bread) which was fantastic, although I wish it was a little bigger. My girlfriend had the chicken chimichanga which she thoroughly enjoyed. We were both very satisfied with our time at Moriarty's and would definitely go back. Only complaint is that outside the restaurant they advertised non-smoking sections on 2nd and 3rd floors, but when we got in, we were told that only place we can sit is on the first floor where smoking is allowed.

Pros: Excellent Food, Great Atmosphere

Cons: no non-smkng section

Just wanted to say, in case she reads these!, that we loved our server...I think her name was Yvonne - pretty Irish girl. So nice to go to an Irish pub with a real Irish server. She was fantastic and made the experience so much fun!! My husband and I were there a month or so ago and hope to return soon and see you again.

Ratings_icons Great Home Bar and Food

ctheat4

I discovered this bar far too late in my business assignment stay in Philly. Once I did discover it, I haven't been able to let a week pass without a plate full of their out-of-this-world wings. Only order a small: 10 whole wings. I often return a second night for the french dip. They have a huge selection of great beers; only the fussiest would not find a suitable selection.

I also have never been in here but what I get involved in great conversation. Service isn't perfect, but they have so many to serve I don't see how it could be much better.

Pros: Good value, Outstanding food, Location

Ratings_icons It's the wings.

1fromyunk

I've been going to Moriarty's off and on for years. It's all about the wings. They are the best in the city. Be sure to have a cold pint of beer ready when they get to your table. This place will probably have a brew you like. The portions are generous making it worth the $8.00 for a large order. When seated try to get a booth or be prepared to knock elbows with other tables. They pack 'em in here. If someone passes out, you might get a stool at the bar.

Pros: wings, selection of beer

Cons: crowded

This is not a great restaurant. What this is, is a relaxing pub people who live nearby will return to time after time to unwind and enjoy the company of their fellow man (or woman). I think that Philadelphians are spoiled by the wonderful and relaxing pubs in their city. Move elsewhere, and you will wish that there were a Moriarty's in your new home, but there won't be. Objectively speaking, it has an excellent selection of beer. Background is not too loud and I have had many important conversations here. Bar standards are fine.

Pros: atmosphere

Cons: parking

Ratings_icons Good Food; Service could be better

FurryFriend

The food is good; however there are some things that need improvement: staff needs to be much more flexible with special requests and get orders right the first time; second, they need to be more flexible when it comes to seating and section requests; currently they are very difficult with it comes to this. They should take a lesson from Cavanaugh's in University City.

Pros: Food, Drinks

Cons: Seating Flexibility, Special Requests
