I've been a regular at the Oakland salon for years, and now several of my friends and family members are regular clients, too! I like to change my hair fairly often, and Sal (the owner and my favorite stylist) always gets it right. I know

When the stylist hair looks terrible, it's a sign of a bad salon. Complete lack of customer service, unprofessional behavior. Front desk person was rude. Salon was dirty and uninviting.

I have FINALLY found someone to cut my hair the way I want it done! I have paid as much as $300 for a haircut in NYC but Heather at Puccini's out did them all! The cut was only $26 and it is so cute. I highly recommend this salon, it has a very low key comfortable atmosphere and they know how to cut hair. Can't wait to go next time for my color. AWESOME!

I went to Puccini's twice: the first time I got a cute cut and overall colour. The second time I got... an unpleasant experience.
Having no prior experience with any of the house stylists, I took a walk-in with Annie. I was pleasantly surprised that she gave such a good, short cut--a challenge few stylists can meet. My style looked good straight or wavey, and Annie suggested two great Paul Mitchell products. However, when I asked for foils my second time in, Annie miscalculated and the bleach failed to take. Again, she dried my hair and applied foils. Again it failed, resulting in hideous, washed out half-blond half-reddish streaks. Terrifying! I accepted Annie's sincere apology but was stunned when her manager insisted, "I think it looks kinda cool." This pathetic attempt to recover my confidence made me think, If he thinks this looks good, I'm in the wrong place. So, despite Annie's sincere apology, I won't be going back. I'd rather have a stylist who's honest than one who tries to pass off failure as success.
To his credit, the manager charged me only for the cut, overall colour and correction. But after a hair trauma and four hours wasted in the salon, I think I'll take my chances elsewhere.

Pros: Good walk-in service; very affordable

Cons: The stylists don't really know colour

I highly recommend Puccini's to anyone who is looking for a stylish yet affordable haircut. I have had my hair cut by three different people at this salon, and loved every one of them. They also did a fabulous job on my husband's longish hair. Prices are fair, as they charge by the length of hair cut off; a basic trim will cost you less than a drastic change. The music and atmosphere are also great, the stylists are personable, and everything about this place rocks. They have spared me from the boring, old-lady haircuts I was getting everywhere else. The sad part is, I moved from the area and don't know if I'll ever find a salon I like this much again!

Pros: great stylists, great price, can take you on short notice

Cons: can't think of any

This place absolutely rocks for haircuts.

It is the Anti-Supercuts.

For ~$18 they wash your hair, cut it perfectly, and then style it for you. (this is for a guy, anyway).

I've never had one of the stylists suck or do anything to mess up my hair, and they're always nice and usually try to talk to you (if you seem like you want them to). Note that you should probably tip these stylists more than you would tip a supercuts drone (read: $5+)

The background music is eclectic. While this may not seem important, trust me: it is. If someone is blasting Brittany Spears for 35min while they cut your hair, it's pretty hard to not want them to stab those scissors right into your ears.

They also have pretty much any hair product you could need, and they don't gouge on the price too badly (at least not worse than any other salon).

Best place for haircuts in Pittsburgh. Period.
