Whenever we have friends from out of town come to visit we make sure to hit a couple of places downtown and Jim's is usually one of them. We have been enjoying their cheesesteaks for years.

We love the steaks in this place. we get there early and you can see them cooking up the meat. They are busy but very fast. You get in the line and make sure you know just what you want. If you are a tourist make sure you read the menu first. Great food!!

I grew up in West Philly, going to this Jims Steaks location. So from the late 60s, early 70s, that's a lot of steaks and hoagies. Truth be told, the surrounding neighborhood is not the greatest. On our last trip there, we got a snapple bottle slammed across the hood of out brand new SUV, thrown from a half block away courtesy of some teen knuckleheads running the streets. The older ladies are gone that used to grill steaks for some 30+ years. The italian special hoagies, the Tasykakes, LG chips and Franks sodas, bean pies, and issues of the Philadelphia Tribune still make it a nostaligic trip. I'll be limiting my future visits to the daylight hours from now on, not just for safety concerns, but it gets jam packed in there in the evenings.

All my life, I've gone to Jim's at 62nd street. Recently returned after a long absence, and the food is still terrific! The hoagies are a work of art, and the Cheesteaks are a Philly institution. This is the real Philly experience. No sit down eating space; in fact, to stand and eat at the rail thin counter is asking a lot at peak times. This is a take out joint. Go eat with the tourists at South St's version if you want pampering. Here all the effort is put into the grub, and it's superb!

Pros: Great portions, Superb quality, Attentive service

Cons: Crowded weekends, Crowded lunchtimes, Know what you want

Editorial from

Jim's says that it invented the cheesesteak in the heart of West Philadelphia---although the guys in South Philly might disagree. Jim's serves up very good steak sandwiches with fried onions and Cheese Whiz---or American or provolone. The…
