Dr. Brophy and the 2 female staff members who took care of my Lizzie in the middle of the night were the most compassionate caregivers I could imagine. As hard as it was to say goodbye to my nearly 21-year-old cat Liz, they eliminated her suffering while I held her. Then we went home and she was at peace.

I just wanted to thank everyone at the Animal Emergency and Referral Center for their kindness! Everyone was very helpful and caring when I brought my dog in last week. The follow-up call I received a few days later was the icing on the cake! It really made the experience that much better by showing you honestly do care.

Thank you to Dr. Miller and the staff for taking such great care of my puppy and making us both feel important!

It's expensive but you get the type of service you expect for the price. Top notch facility, expert vets, kind and caring individuals who encourage you to call day or night and explain EXACTLY what every test is for and why they are doing what they are EVERY time you ask. I can't say enough about their professionalism. My dog was vomiting blood and as soon as we walked in, our dog was seen, and in less than 15 minutes was on an IV and getting treatment. Heaven forbid you need their service, but if you do, at least know that you are doing the very best for your pet by bringing them to York's Animal Emergency & Referral Center.

I've been to the Animal Emergency & Referral Center of York several times after-hours, and I've also been a veterinary technician for the last 7 years. I've seen the best and the worst, and let me tell you, this place is absolutely TOP-NOTCH. Their vets and techs are well-trained and knowledgeable... they have state-of-the-art equipment like a digital x-ray system, endoscopy and ultrasound... they're capable of handling almost anything, and they can refer you to a veterinary specialist for any situation that needs further care.

To respond to Mary H.'s comment below... any veterinarian who practices good medicine is going to conduct a complete physical examination on every patient they see. You can't just walk in and request prescription medication based on your own diagnosis. Your pet's symptoms could have been caused by something else, and you'd probably sue the pants off any vet who missed something because they didn't do a simple physical exam!

And I'm sorry your dog was frightened, but if he was acting like he might bite, it's understandable for the veterinarian to use a muzzle to protect everyone involved, including your pet. Believe me, no veterinarian or technician WANTS to upset your animal... we'd much rather deal with happy patients.

As far as higher prices, well, it's the nature of emergency and specialty medicine... you want antibiotics at 3:00 am, you're gonna pay more for 'em. Head over to any other emergency facility, and you'll see that their prices are competitive within the emergency veterinary field.

The vets at this place are great! Unfortunately my family has had to use them for after hour emergencies several times. Once was a positive outcome and I will forever be grateful to them. Twice we had pets that passed away there. They are so understanding to the owner's grief and go out of their way to be helpful and caring. They seem to be even more knowledgeable than my vet. They explain things thoroughly so you can understand what is going on with your pet. Glad to know they are there when you need them. I will forever be grateful to them!

We have visited the Emergency Clinic several times. We had a dog being treated for cancer and they were there for us to run tests when she had any issues. They were also willing to talk to our veterinarian oncologist to work on correct treatment. Thanks for being there for us.

Think hospital ER. The one most requiring attention receives attention. That's how it is at the Animal Emergency Clinic, and, like a human hospital, you can't really grumble much when you have an emergency in the middle of non-vet business hours and need to be seen and someone w/ a dying animal only has to wait 3 minutes after you've been waiting a half hour. You never can tell how long you'll be when you have to use this service, but thank goodness they're in town, because when it can't wait, it can't wait!

Unfortunately, I've had two times when my pets needed to be seen at the animal ER. The first was due to a house fire. Seeing me in my soot-covered clothing, we were in and out quickly and without charge, which was one of many blessings we received during that difficult period. The second time, we waited and waited, but only because there were many more severe case that came along.

The doctors do a wonderful job. It is certainly business-like, but these are the doctors who see the worst of the worst, and I applaud their dedication.
