About a month ago, a friend of mine purchased a large tank & 9 fish from your store. After a week & a half, only two were left. She followed all the instructions she was given by the store to a tee & even called back with questions for extra guidance after the first few fish died. Although this was dissatisfying, we wrote it off, figuring we maybe just got a bad batch of fish. However, 2 weeks ago, two other friends of mine purchased a rabbit. After bringing him home, he stopped eating, had unhealthy bowel movements & refused to drink any water. He was given the vitamins purchased at the store & was fed the same food the rabbits received there, so it's not as though he was neglected or shocked by a different diet. Again, my friends called the store, asking for any extra advice, & once again, followed the instructions they were given. The store wrote it off as stress, & since he was still adjusting to a new environment, we figured they could be right. He showed a small bit of improvement for a day or two, but his condition got worse & the advice from the pet store did not help him improve. Since he was with them for two weeks, "stress" could not be the only issue he had, as that is enough time for a pet to acclimate to a new environment. Today, the rabbit died. Needless to say, we've all been very dissatisfied by our experiences with the store. While one occurrence of death could be an unfortunate, but isolated, incident, having two different kinds of pets purchased from your store die within two weeks of bringing them home speaks volumes about the quality of the animals this store carries. I have already addressed this issue on the store's Facebook page & have not yet received a reply; I don't see how they can make up for not one, but two different kinds of animals passing away within the first two weeks of ownership. It's ridiculous, especially considering the store prides itself on proper care & attention to their animals... obviously this care is not extended to ALL animals, otherwise, none of my friends would be in the situations they are in. I was hesitant about visiting this store to begin with, since stores like these have reputations for getting animals from mills, but the store atmosphere convinced me to give them a chance. I wish I had not given them the benefit of the doubt considering the poor experiences I've seen others have with the animals purchased here. I would not recommend purchasing any pets from this store unless you are absolutely & 100% sure you are prepared for any of the issues you may run into.

I purchased a Yorkie puppy from this store last week and I must say that the employees were very knowledgable and helpful. Every question I had for them they had an answer and paperwork to back it up. The puppy is very happy, healthy, and a total pleasure to have in my life. I want to thank The Pet Store for their great service, attention to detail and obvious love for the animals. I would (and have) recommend this store to anyone!

I have gone into The Pet Store a few times.I bought a cat from there a few years ago and he was wonderful. I had no problems with him what so ever. In regards to the bad reviews, it is a shame that these pets suffered but that just shows lack of knowledge on behalf of the employees. Honestly, this place would be amazing if they would hire people who genuinely care for the animals instead of looking at it like it's just a paycheck.

On October 1st, 2010 i bought a puppy from this pet store and he is my baby. Problem is when i brought my adorable Yorkie bichon mix home, he started developing trouble. he refused to eat, and every time i called them they claimed he was stressed out, would eventually eat and was nothing to worry about. i had him vet checked as they reccomended and all seemed to be okay, due to the fact that i told my vet what they said, that he was just stressed, because dogs do indeed become stressed when coming into a new home. about three weeks later i called the pet store numerous times again due to him not eating, and they still insisted he would eventually eat, it was normal. turns out, he still would barely eat three months later, and started throwing up and having diarrhea with a fever of 103. this happened about seven more times and each time he needed four shots, and iv fluids for severe dehydration the bills were approx. $130 each time. now adays he is said by the vet to have colitis, a disease. he is currently on about six different medications daily and a steroid. and he finally eats well. he also has to have a special food that sells for $50 for a 15 pound bag. I love him dearly, but please do not put yourself up for the agony, pain and heartache that comes with many of these puppies. I WOULD NOT BUY FROM THEM AGAIN! THEIR PUPS ARE FROM PUPPY MILLS! PLEASE RECONSIDER GOING HERE! THESE PEOPLE NEED TO BE SHUT DOWN FOR THIS!!!!!!!

i bought a cat from the pet store. the petstore had all the papers on the cat saying its up to date on meds, has no infections, nothing wrong with it. brought the cat home, and first thing it did was go to the litter box. it had diareha. hadnt even fed it anything yet. so we called the pet store and they said it from stress. well, over the next 2 days it got worse and so we call the store again and they said there is nothing they can do and we had to bring the cat to the vet. well, the vet said the cat had cocksinia, an infection in the digestive system that can kill the cat. the vet said if this cat has it, EVERY
OTHER CAT IN THE STORE HAS IT!!!! the pet store will not refund your money, or cover your vet bill for something it got when it was in the store.. they will replace your cat, but why do that when the other ones have it too? do not buy any products, or animals from this store.

I bought a 6 month yorkie mix from the Pet Store, we we took him to his first vet visit he had a horrible double ear infection, two impacted teeth and giarrdia. They paid a total of 27$ for the ear meds and that took almost 3 weeks to get the check. At that time when we asked to take him out if his cage to look at him we were told he had not come out of the cage in over a week,I see they have since changed that policy. This is a horrible puppy mill seller and the only thing I am thankful for is we feel we have saved our

dogs life by giving him a wonderful loving forever home.

I love how they back track and try and cover their ass on these reviews, yet never once saying anything about my dog having a double ear infection in which my vet said the discharge was coming out of the ears plus the giarrdia and two impacted teeth. If he was taken out of his cage every day why did none of the employees notice this? And it was not a junior employee who told me anything it was the manager and I will gladly supply her name because she gave it to me when I bought my dog. Piss poor pet care

Business Response:

We have always had a documented plan in place to assure all of the puppies in our care come out at least five times a day to play with people. In addition, our puppies get out to have their enclosures cleaned, get bathed, get medications, get weighed, have ears cleaned, nails clipped, etc.-there is never a chance for a puppy to not come out of its enclosure for a week. Our plan was drafted by a local and licensed veterinarian and approved-in writing-by the PA Department of Agriculture. We would be glad to show you this in writing. Its also available in the binders residing at the puppy playrooms. Apparently, you talked with possibly a junior employee, not yet fully acquainted with our procedures. We take care of all applicable reimbursements within 14 days of receipt of documentation from the veterinarian in accordance with state law. We maintain a full audit trail of all payments should anyone need to review these. When we receive documentation of an issue falling under the warranty we are bound by state law to make reimbursement. We do not sell puppy mill puppies as this is the first 'card' people will pull should they be disappointed for any reason. As I said, we are inspected by the PA Dept of Ag and THEY can provide information about the sources of our puppies We are very glad this puppy found a loving home and we hope you will come back to visit. We LOVE all of our puppies!!

Clean store, friendly staff. Pets and their dwellings were well maintained.

I went in to look at their birds. I was happy to find a Pacific Parrotlet. Staff members are not super knowledgeable about the birds they carry, but friendly and ready to help. I bought the pacific parrotlet. Though a bit older than I would prefer (around a year old at time of sale) he was a sweet and beautiful bird.

Upon Vet checkup the bird is has a overgrown beak and did not molt correctly for the Spring due to the toy/food selection of the pet shop. (was told parrotlets eat parakeet food by staff - Vet says no cockatiel food is the closest to a good parrotlet diet.) In the future I will be looking to them for general supplies, but not knowledge for birds or their care.

Really would like to complain about customers service it STINKS!! We purchased a puppy and 3 days after having got very sick. It started with things that the store was supposed to have treated the puppy for before we purchased. It only got worse and when I would call and tell them they always said well we would have treated that for free. Never caring how puppy was doing. After 1 1/2 months and over $1000.00 in vet bills we had to put puppy to sleep. I took all papers from vet to store and it took 1 month to get my money back. All I can say is this store is one place I will try to keep people from going to. If you do go customer service from management is the worse I ever had anywhere.

Payment was made within the required 14 days AFTER receiving documentation from your veterinarian. In 14 years and over 8,000 puppies finding good homes, this is the FIRST to ever be put down due to kennel cough. That, Ms. Funt is what is disgraceful.

In September I purchased a lion head mix baby bunny. I had asked what it was mixed with and they had no idea. I asked what age it was and they had to ask 3 different store employees before telling me 8 weeks they thought. And finally I asked what sex it was and was told that they can change sex until up to 3 months old. Which completely through me for a loop since I'm in vet tech school and never had heard this. I researched it and it was a lie. A rabbit is born one sex and stays that. However they are hard to tell apart if you don't know what your doing. It is easiest after 3 months. All of this should have warned me not to buy from them.I bought the bunny and the warranty with my mother and took the rabbit home. I named the bunny cappacino/a (depended on sex) and happily introduced it to its prebought and put together cage, toys, and food. The rabbit refused to eat and drink and it worried me because I knew that that was a very bad sign in rabbits. I called up the Vet as soon as they opened and scheduled an appointment for it and then while I was at school my parents rushed it in. I got a call at college to find out that the rabbit was a girl and that it was in serious trouble. It had a serious impaction in his colon aka it was stuffed full of poop to the point it couldnt pass the poop out of its rectum. I asked well how could this have happened so fast. My dad told me the vet said it was so bad it had to have been suffering like this for days and it probably would not last long. There was nothing they could do but try flushing it out with a solution but that most likely would be so traumatic it would die. I asked why was it so ill. My dad told me that the vet said it had been fed an improper diet. It was fed only pellets and no hay. Bunnies need hay/fiber or this happens to them. She said the only thing I could do was force feed it, give it an antibiotic, and hope it lived or give it to the pet store.
I called up the pet store and informed them. THey said oh bring it back and we'll give you another. I was apalled because I knew they would not be watching it around the clock like me and would just let it die in the back. This rabbit may have meant nothing to them but I cared about it. They told me they were going to give me ferret lax and that would help. They gave it to bunnies all the time there that got constipated. They defended their food saying it was expensive and that the breeder must have done it. I got the product I kept her and did as the vet said but sadly it died the next day. We took her back to the pet store because they require the body for the warranty.
While there I noticed that today the rabbits bowl was covered in ferret lax. I picked out one of her siblings. I took him home and he had diarrhea I assume because after my previous rabbits death they gave them way too much laxative. I thought ok he'll get over it but I was scared. He died that night. I called them up extremely angry and they accused me of stressing out the rabbits. Asked me every food item I used, bedding, cage, etc. And of course because I had researched everything about bunnies and knew not to use pine or cedar or other things that are bad for rabbits they found no fault in what I did. They told me to come pick out another.
I asked if there were NEW as in just in bunnies because I wanted one they didnt have time to kill this time. They told me yes we arrived 30min later looked and I said these are the same litters. They go ya? I said you told me you had ones just in today. THey said they checked in back said nope theres none buy hey go home we'll call you when we get some.
I never received a call. I ended up with 3 bunnies from two different breeders who are wonderful. They get along they were happy since the day I got them running around licking me. They are all neutered and well taken care of because I care for my pets. Around the end of october I emailed them all of this and my complaint. THe reply I got? Um we called you and left a message. Have a nice day.
These people cared nothing for their pets. Nothing for their customers. The customer service I recieved was horrible. WHen this was all going on I talked to my friends and my boyfriends friends. I found out that my bf's friend apparently had an issue with their guinea pigs. After having 4 die from them he stopped trying. There was also a friend who had a puppy die from them. They overcrowd their small animal pets. They are just looking to make money. THeir stuff is ignorant of simple things they should know if they are selling the animal to someone. They lie straight to your face. I make sure to tell everyone at Wilson College about my experience and now I hope others will read this too. If Petsmart sold bunnies I would never have gone to this store for it since I never really shopped there in the first place.

Business Response:

I would hope that with your training you would not believe any mammal could change its sex. We do not sex our bunnies since they are young and difficult to accurately sex. Our bunnies are 8 weeks old. A fact you should also know as PA state law prohibits sale before said date. Our bunnies come from many sources so its impossible for us to know absolutely what a specific bunny is bred from. All of our bunnies are fed pellets and timothy hay. Usually, the timmy hay disappears within the first half hour of being placed in the enclosure with them. The only way you would see this is if you came to the store at opening and depending upon when it was served it may already be gone as we start cleaning and feeing two hours prior to the store opening. Our bunnies normally do not stay with us for even a week as they find homes very quickly. We do try to keep watch over all of our pets. None of them are any more important than another. If a customer is having an issue with a pet recently purchased, we do normally offer for them to bring back the pet and let the customer choose another. The sick pet is then placed in our hospital area in the back where we have full time care from two hours before opening until closing seven days a week. We do not use ferret lax on any of our pets. Im not sure what you think you saw so i can't address this issue. We are also inspected by the PA Dept. of Agriculture for space, care and health of our small animals (bunnies, hamsters, birds, etc.) and by Bureau of Dog Law for our puppies. We have never had an infraction in 14 years. We are consistently told we are the cleanest and nicest store customers have visited. The General Manager said she did call and leave a message when new bunnies arrived. I apologize if you didn't get the message. I'm glad to hear you were able to get bunnies from a breeder and that you are now happy with your situation.

I have been going to the Pet Store for the past 11 years. I find the staff warm and friendly and very knowledgable. The store is always very clean and the animals all seem to be very happy. In the past 11 years I have gotten 4 pets from here and they all have been a blessing.I also get all my pet supplies from here, and find them very
affordable. The Pet Store is always my first choice for pets and supplies.

We purchased our Toy Fox Terrier, Buster, 7 years ago from The Pet Store and were very impressed with the care and attention we received from their knowledgeable and courteous staff. Their customer service far exceeded our expectations by today??s standards. The store is always neat and clean with a large variety of pets to choose from. We have never had any health or other issues with Buster - we love him! We trust the quality and integrity of the puppies they sell and would not buy a pet elsewhere.

We have never had any health or other issues with Buster - we love him! We trust the quality and integrity of the puppies they sell and would not buy a pet elsewhere.

If you want customer service this is the place to go! The staff always willing to help you find the right product for what you need. Yes you pay a little bit more but if you go to Wal-Mart your not going to get the help you want in buying the right product for you. The puppies are always well taken care of and clean. They let you play with them even if you "just want to play" so that the puppies get out as much as possible and socialize. If I lived closer I would defiantly come here to buy all my supplies.

Wow, I cannot tell you how nice it is to find a local business that is both friendly and helpful. I have visited The Pet Store several times over the past few years. I am always greeted with staff members who are sincere and courteous. The staff really makes me feel that I am important to their business and not just another sale. When I have questions regarding products the staff is very knowledgeable and takes the time to explain both the benefits and differences between products. The pets always appear to be well taken care of and although I cannot see what goes on behind the scenes the staff can be seen thru the cage windows working diligently to ensure the animals cages are always clean and the pets are well groomed and fed. It is nice to know that the puppies come from local breeders which in turn helps to support the local economy. I would definately recommend The Pet Store for your next pet purchase.

We purchased a puppy from here in sept 2010. Store was clean, employees very helpful and nice environment. store had no smell to it (which is unusual for pet stores). We spent a lot of time in their playroom with the puppy and were never rushed. Our sales person explained all the paperwork they had on the dog and even left us look through it. Then the lady walked us around the store and showed us everything she personally recommended if she was buying a puppy. We appreciated her input and never felt pressured to buy anything. They even gave us a bag of food and box of treats for free. We haven't had any health problems with her since we brought her home. My husband even called them a few days after to ask about crate training and they spent a lot more time with us. We will definitely be recommending this store to our friends and family

We bought a puggle puppy here almost a year ago. The area they have you meet the puppy is not big enough. We could not tell that the puppy had bad legs. When we got her home she was walking funny and was real wobbly. I took her to the vet and they found that her knee caps pop in and out of join and even when I hold her you can feel them doing so. She was also very skinny. She was at the pet store for a while she was five months old when we got her. The vet checked her and found about her legs and then they sent a stool sample out she had giardia and it was bad. It took me going to the vets 3 times before she was finally cured. Yea the pet store paperwork said they would treat her for that but I dont want to deal with them anymore. Staff is very friendly. The 3rd time I Took her back to vets they asked where she came from and said they just had another case from that store dog had giardia. It is very contagious so all the puppys prolly had it when I got mine.

Bought a Cairn Terrier there in 2010 was told upfront she had a double groin hernia , this was told by the "mobile vet" they use. We bought her anyway and when we took her to our Vet who is one of the best in the state of Maryland he said she had NO hernia. She did have giarrdia and a bladder infection that took 4 weeks to treat. The vet they use is a joke and I would never buy from this place again. Go to a breeder who cares about the breed not just making a quick buck. And they never paid a nickel for her treatment, they were very rude when I would call. ONCE YOU WALK OUT THAT DOOR YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN

Business Response:

daphne greene We are a pet store. We expect our customers are knowledgeable in the pets they purchase. We do not represent ourselves as veterinarians-the sign over our door says The Pet Store. We would expect questions concerning health issues or concerns would be directed to the professionals and not retailers. All dogs 'reverse sneeze" at some point in their lives. Should your veterinarian have found this issue to be a health concern she/he would have filled out the paperwork and corrective measures would have been take under PA state law.

Occasionally I go into this store to see what kinds of puppies they have and I like to look at their supplies. The puppies do seem overpriced. I was told a mixed breed was $520. The cages are always clean, although I am very skeptical about buying a puppy from a pet store without seeing the living conditions of the puppy's parents. I'm not sure where their puppies come from but Lancaster county is one of the biggest areas for puppy mills. Their small animals are reasonably priced and you can actually hold them before you buy one. The staff is very friendly and helpful. My dog has trouble eating alot of ingredients and a staff member was very helpful in trying to help me find a snack that he can eat.

We bought a Lhasa Apso from The Pet Store in 2006. We drove all the way from VA to get our sweet baby. That puppy was gorgous, clean , more than healthy and so alert and so playful. Their cages are NOT too small for the ones they keep their. The owner personally went to the breeder and got this dog for us. None of her puppies come from puppy mills. The owner knew our lhasa Apso named AngelBear died a few weeks earlier of whom we had for 12 years. She went out of her way to get us another female lhasa apso and didnt even charge me full price for our puppy because she knew we couldnt afford it. She knew our hearts were broken over the death of our AngelBear. I love the owner and her employees so much. It hurts me to hear of people slamming this owner and her store. Our new puppy who we named Shiloh Kalima is now 3 years old and very very healthy. Her veternarian saw her 2 days after we got back to VA and told me that that was one of the healthiest puppies she had seen in a long time. I told her where we bought her from and the vet says she could tell by the looks of our puppy that the store was ran the right way and that you could tell the puppy was taken care of. I thank the owner so much and want to tell you that Buddy and I love Shiloh so much and to thank you again for unbreaking our hearts and making sure we got the lil girl of our dreams and we did. We are thinking about getting a lil boy lhasa apso soon and Im going to go to PA again to The Pet Store when we are ready to find us a lil boy lhasa apso. Shiloh needs a lil brother. Also, Shiloh's middle name Kalima is Japanese for AngelBear for those of you who wanted to know what it meant. My friend who lives in Okinawa named her middle name after AngelBear who died. Thank you Pet store for my beautiful baby girl and all you did for us and we love you all and always will.

I purchased our Golden Retriever here and let me tell you the people were just wonderful and my puppy is doing fine. Well not a puppy anymore 3 years old. We visit often and everyone is always helpful and friendly. Their prices are a little higher than Wal Mart but the customer service is outstanding. Have someone from Wal Mart carry your dog food to your car. If anyone has trouble with this store it would have to be the customers attitude because the owner here stresses customer service.

Nice healthy animals well cared for I purchased a Sun Conure last years he has been a perfect bird. The store staff have always been very helpfull. The pricing is fair you get what you pay for, the value was good. Lots of parking, friendly staff. Still buy all my supplies from them.

I live close to the pet shop so every now and then I drop by. I have bought a few things from the store once of twice when I needed to and soon came to realize just how over priced their supplies were. Pets even. I have probably bought about 3 fish from their. The first two were fan tail Goldfish, and both of them died. The first one I purchased died within 48 hours! That was ridiculous, though I did not bother returning the fish - too much hassel! So about 6 months later I fell in love with another I saw in the store. This time went a little better, but I certainly would not recommend the store even still. The fish died within 1 month!n Surprisingly I went back once more, interested in getting a beta fish to go in a vase I'd bought. The beta fish I must say was worth buying. He lasted about 9 months. But I must say, ive had carniville fish who lived longer! A word of advice - check out small bussinesses 1st, and if you absolutely need something - try to get a small amount. In my opinion, the store is partial to setting their prices higher than most nearby stores such as Walmart - my dog's dog food ( Lamb and Rice formula ) coast about 8 dollars more here! I have not been to the store for a while now, but I did appreciate how friendly the staff was and their willingness to help - they give out "information sheets" with tons of useful facts about the animal your interested in. I also enjoy their selection of reptiles - very diverse! So I guess I have sort of mixed feelings about this place, but all in all I'd say your best bet ( unless you're looking into purshasing a snake!) is to shoot for Wally world ( for supplies) or Pet value.

While looking for a dog for my friend, who had just started a career, we went to the pet store. We came across a very cute puppy and were very interested in it. When we asked what kind of dog it was the worker said it was a mix and the name had about 4 different names bunched into one. We dismissed it and asked for paper work on the different treatments it had gotten and from where the puppy came from. They only had paper work on the company it came from but did not have any information on who the breeders were or dogs that were bred that would have given birth to the puppy. It all seemed very sketchy to me, and unfortunately for the puppy I wouldn't allow my friend to buy it for fear of later problems.
The pet store is a decent place to buy fish...but be very cautious about buying their puppies!!

Business Response:

Response from store At times the paperwork on a puppy may not be ready when a customer is ready to see the puppy. We get all of our puppies locally and it takes a few days to get breeder information, immunization information, etc. into a professional format and put together the paperwork. We would love to have everything ready immediately but we can't. We do sell mixed breed puppies and it has become very popular to make designer names for some of them as you can see by looking on the Internet. We don't get our puppies from a company so apparently the employee was mistaken. In accordance with PA State Law we provide breeder information only on registrable (not mixed breed) puppies. All of our registrable puppy paperwork lists the sire and dam as well as their registration numbers at the top of the immunization record. I hope this clears up some of your suspicions.

This is a great store for fish! I just started out a 'community' tank for my kids and they walked me through everything that I needed, and spent a lot of time going over set up and what fish can go with what. They were very patient and very knowledgeable and even gave my kids fun websites to go to to learn more about the fish. We had a lot of fun.

I purchased a chinchilla from this store on Tuesday, November 21, 2006. We were given a 48 hour warranty on the pet. On Thanksgiving Day, the 23rd, we rushed the chinchilla to a vet hospital near Washington, D.C. as we were told when we called numerous emergency veterinary hotlines. The veternarian told us that one of the health problems with the chinchilla was pre-existing and we should return the chinchilla to the pet store to receive a refund. When we tried to return the pet on the next business day, black friday, the managers told us that is wasn't their problem and there was nothing they could do. Needless to say, i am out over $250 and left with a string of obscene words on the tip of my tongue.

Response from store Without getting graphic, this pet was physically mutilated. We had it examined by a local veterinarian and we were told someone mutilated the pet.The customer later called the store and told us the nephew who the pet was purchased for was going to set himself on fire.I don't think the customer was very balanced. The chinchilla was subsequently given to one of our employees and is living well.

Small store, but nice selection of small pets. Staff is friendly and helpful. Puppies are kept in small cages (sometimes two or three to a pen) which doesn't appeal to me at all. Store is clean.
