I search out Malaysian restaurants in every city I go to and this one is worth checking out.

The decor was attractive, the service was attentive and the food was above average.

I especially liked the satay but did not like how the kari ayam was full of bone fragments. I always like it on the bone but in this case they had chopped them into fine pieces. Nonetheless it tasted great and I will be back next time I'm in Philadelphia.

Pros: Value, taste

I love their food. It is a very great introduction to Asian food, and people I take there simply love them.

The price is good and the service is fast and friendly. Grate place in Chinatown.

This chain Malaysian Restaurant is absolutely incredible. My personal favorites are the Roti Canai, The Mango Chicken, and the hot and Spicy jumbo Prawns. You cannot go wrong here!!

Whenever I come to town I always try to make it here.

Pros: Delicious food, fast service.

Cons: Don't take credit cards, often you have to wait for a table.

The lunch was great. Good spot for a working lunch. The staff is prompt and the portions are generous. The pad thai is spot on! New Fave! I heard the wait can get long at night but lunch was quick.

In my opinion, the best Malaysian restaurant in Philly. Service is fast and attentive. Atmosphere is modern and chic. Try and get a seat in the back near the kitchen to watch the cooks prepare the food! For appetizers, start with the roti canai indian pancake, which comes with an awesome chicken/potato curry sauce. Entrees are cheap and delicious, especially the Chicken Curry Ayam, Mango Chicken and Singapore Rice Noodles. Try a Malaysian iced tea (that's MALAYSIAN, not thai as per the waitresses ;) ) on the side. Perfect if you're looking for a fast, cheap, delicious Chinatown eat.

I have to say ive been to all the restuarants in chinatown and this place has the worst service ever. They are dismissive and condescending and while i was in the middle of eating, they just handed me the bill without asking if i wanted desserts or anything. it made me feel like i had no money to pay for this meal. the food is okay, it wasnt bad but i had better.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Chinatown. The menu is pretty large and varied, so there is something for everyone. The portions are huge and around $7 or $8 for a dinner. I wish I could make it here more often! It's delicious and you won't be disappointed if you go. I recommend the chicken curry!

I have been here several times and they do have good food but I have several concerns regarding their cleanliness. First off, their restroom is atrocious, so you can?t touch anything in there. What is the point of washing your hands? Secondly, your shoes stick to the entire floors of the restaurant, so clean your shoes before returning home. Thirdly, I have had several chicken dishes where I found several hard pieces of white unidentifiable meat that we not edible in which I had to discard them in my napkin. Lastly, there are flies buzzing in the restaurant, in the winter? I just think at a very basic level they would try to uphold their appearance. There are many other restaurants in Chinatown that are cheaper and cleaner. Also a friend of mine had a piece of glass in his food and they did not even take it off his bill.

Penang offers fresh spicey Malaysian food family style. They have great indomalaysian cuisine like their roti appetizers and curry sauces. They also offer duck feet and fish heads for the more adventurous eater. Bring cash since that is the only method of payment.

I lived in Malaysia for a few months and this is as authentic as Malaysian food gets in this city. It always hits the spot when you want something different. Some items to try: Indian Pancake, Satay Chicken and Satay Beef, Mango Chicken, Jumbo Prawns in the house sauce, and the cold chicken--be prepared for food that is rich in flavor, sweet and salty and possibly spicy. They do not take credit cards only cash. It's quite loud but it gives the place a comforting, casual feel. I've never had a bad experience here and the service, food are always consistent.

I go here often, despite the fight for parking. The food is that good. The waiters/waitresses literally stand around waiting to accomodate you. The decor is also unique, especially when compared to the rest of Chinatown. I recommend the Indian pancake and the Hainese chicken rice.

The Thai Malaysian menu this place offers was quite an unexpected find for me. I thoroughly enjoyed their roti cani appetizer and the soft shell menu special. Some may be afraid of some of their menu items but I have a soft spot for exotic food. Yet there's something for everyone. The atmosphere is very trendy and first-class without the outrageous prices.

PROS: Delicious food, interesting menu, great prices
CONS: none

hahaha. serious tho. this place isn't too bad. price was decent, service was fine...small portion tho. but it's a nice cozy place. always order the indian bread, curry chicken, and the indian noodles (forgot what it was called). Ask for the yellow rice-tasty stuff. Gets a bit crowded on the weekend. i think they only take credit card. could be wrong.

I agree with the other reviewer--why go to a yuppie chain restaurant when there are plenty of other (and better) places to go.... on the same block. You're already in chinatown!

it's kind of quaint that this small chain is in chinatown. makes it seem a little more authentic. the food is great and while it did take a little while to get seated, the service once we were seated was good. definitely recommend the roti and the mango chicken. the dishes marked as hot weren't really so if you want it hot, you should probably ask them to make it extra hot.

You notice that the few bad reviews of this restaurant never mention that the food is bad? That's because the food is INCREDIBLE and you cannot say anything negative about what to me was pretty much perfection. Usually I prefer Thai food to all other types of Asian cuisine but that was before Penang. Say what you want about it being a "yuppie" hot spot or personal stories of bad service or table wait times. You'll forget about all that the minute you stop complaining and start eating. This is hands down the best asian food I've ever had in my entire life. I don't even live in Philly anymore and I still find myself thinking about Penang. My advice for dessert if you're adventurous.....try the Chandol.

Why go to an over-priced yuppie-trap when there are dozens of great restaurants nearby in Chinatown where you can get much better food at lower prices. I admit that Penang has better decor than most, but the service is terrible.

I went with a group of 8 visiting from NYC. I have not yet been to Penang's NYC locations. When I ordered asam laksa, the waitress told me that I did not want it. I told her I know it's extremely hot and has a very intense fish flavor, both aspects I enjoy. It looked to be to my taste. Yet she refused. I asked her to come around to me again, and three times she refused to serve me my order. I finally gave in, ordered another dish. I understand her concern and appreciate that she lets customers know when they might be getting into deep anchovy sauce, but when I made it clear to her I understood what I was ordering THRICE, her concern turned into rudeness. I will go to a NYC location, try again, and greatly hope I will not be turned down again on appearance.
