In Short
The cavernous maze of nooks and crannies is dressed in dark wood, with old-fashioned glass fixtures and faded photographs decorating the walls. A fireplace at the back of the restaurant is the setting for cozy cider-sipping. The young and lively patrons, a few notches above a frat crowd, gathers after work for quiz night, dart throwing and general merriment. Nightly entertainments include traditional Irish music, with the occasional American folkie filling in, and televised rugby and soccer matches.

The Inside Scoop

  1. Know Before You Go - A full menu offers boxties and beef stew as well as less exotic wraps and burgers.
  2. The Extras - Wednesday is Quizo night.

Took our teenage kids here for rugby game broadcast. Traditional, very good pub food. Great beer on tap. Great atmosphere for the game. Great family outing if you have kids who are into rugby.

Nice Spot

by Jennifer R.

Food here is pretty good great atmosphere and nice crowd whenever I've been here. Located in the center city. The downside is parking. Its either in a garage which cost money are park on the street and hope not to get a ticket at the meter and towed, But we keep going back

You might not know this but...

by laura s. | insider Insider | Rank: 17,859

Have only been on a Saturday night when the entire place is cleared out and becomes a dance club. I never would have known that this is a traditional Irish pub for all the flashing lights and DJ. The music selection isn't that great, but if you are looking for crowded, close and sweaty, its a good spot.

Fun place to hang

by Michele H. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,191

A Philadelphia institution, the Irish Pub is a combination Dublin saloon and an all-American neighborhood bar. These lively places feature turn-of-the-century hand-carved cherrywood bars surrounded by period tile. Booths line the walls, which are adorned with sports, theater and political memorabilia. Private dining rooms are available. For lunch, enjoy sandwiches, burgers and salads with specials starting at an affordable $3.99. The dinner menu features Irish favorites such as Beef Stew, Fish & Chips, and Shepherd?s Pie with Chef-selected dinner specials starting at $8.99. Sunday Brunch is served every week from 10 AM to 2 AM. The kichen serves food until 1 AM every night. $2 Pint specials all day, every day.

Fado - Great Food and Atmosphere

by Lisa R.

We lived in Philly for 1 1/2 years before having children. We went to Fado many times and always loved the food and atmostphere. The service was warm and friendly and the food very good. The location is very convenient, right in the heart of Center City.

I highly recommend a vist!

Good Food, Great Drink!

by April M. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 1,083

Looking for good food and a wide selection of drinks, Fado's is the place to go. Every year we look forward to the St. Baldwicks event sponsored by Fado's. It gets better and better every year. Everyone has a great time, but better than that, alot of money is raised for an excellent cause.

Very decent food and atmosphere, moderate price

by Kyle M. | insider Insider | Rank: 13,007

For the price, the food at Fado is really good. Perfect for a quick lunch. Drink prices are about average for the city. The appetizers are excellent, the entrees a bit more than decent. My server was slow, but your experiences may vary.

Laid Back Atmosphere

by Mandi B.

This bar offers a laid back atmosphere, good music, and good times. You do not have to dress up for this bar although you might want to look presentable as you never know who you might see. Most of the time there is a cover. At least give it a try, you might want to return.

For Proper Drinking

by John V. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 7,547

Fado is an upscale bar and restaurant. The food is really good and the drinks, although expensive, are not outlandishly priced. Oftentimes people gather here for sports events, but the atmosphere remains calm mostly. A good dining and drinking experience, especially if you can bring someone who'll pick up the bill.

It was ok

by Phillysouldancer75

I read the menu as I pass by it daily, decided happy hour would be a good time to try it out......
pub food was good - I would have liked to have eaten more....beer was good too - decent pricing.

as I have encountered in several center-city pubs, the service was pretty bad. We couldn't get drink refills on a friday night at 7pm (the place was not really busy) to save our *lives*...we waited 15 minutes to find the waiter for a drink refill....then seriously -- after we found him to ask for the bill - we waited another 10. I hope he enjoyed his lack of tip. sorry - but he deserved the 10% he got. It wasn't busy and he was no where to be found....

Pros: good pub food, reasonably priced

Cons: typically poor center city pub service

Having visited Ireland twice in my life, Fado is the most authentic pub I have been to in the US. The food is awesome, and it's a PERFECT spot for Happy hour. Great beers on draft and fun place for a big group- the service the last time my office had a big happy hour was great.......

Highly recommed Fado in Philly!

Fado

by donjoe

I too was a member of the party of 8 who attempted to have a nice chatty dinner after the theatre on Sunday with Marci229. One of our favorite places and for the second time in a row we had a terrible experience. I will say however that I do not believe the waitress was at fault. She was very kind and pleasant when we first arrived to find that there would be only 2 menus to share among 8 of us. And she did scramble to find us candles when she observed us trying to read the menus with cigarette lighters.
My clear indication with regard to Fado is that this center city eatery had little or no interest in attending to it's customers and it was very obvious when our table ordred a few hamburgers and other meals which included fries because at about that same time the person in charge was heard to say "watch one of them will want ketchup." Knowing full well she didn't have any ketchup in the building. Before she eventually left to BUY ketchup after the hamburgers were too cold to eat she then felt the perverse need to lecture us on the proper way to treat a waitress... Because a person of her caliber -mind you -is used to "PEOPLE LIKE US"...
Can you Imagine???!!! I've been around for a LOT of years and I've never experienced DRAMA /RUDENESS like this anywhere.. VERY Unpleasant Experience. Won't Ever Go Back To Fado!

Terrible service

by Marci229

We've gone to Fado a lot over the years. The last two visits have been terrible. We gave them a second chance because we've always enjoyed going there--but we won't be giving them another shot. This time, they delivered our burgers with no ketchup. When we asked for it, we heard someone in the back say, "I knew someone would ask for ketchup." After 15 minutes, we inquired again and our waitress had a meltdown and starting saying she was just the messenger and it wasn't her fault. Apparently, they had to go out and buy ketchup. The manager left and came back with it--but not before chastising us for "verbally abusing" her waitress--who apparently was in the back crying. We, at no point, personally attacked the waitress, just asked where our ketchup was. At no point did the manager apologize for having us wait 30 minutes for our ketchup--as our burgers sat in front of us and everyone in our party had finished. The manager did take 20 percent off our tab--but not for the ketchup. In her words, she took that off because they didn't have an appetizer we liked. Really terrible service. Go somewhere else.

Pros: Irish--but in pseudo kind of way

Cons: terrible service

Fun pub for dancing

by DDetwi1040

I'm a big fan of Fado on weekend nights. It's quite large and set up nicely so that you can have a few drinks with friends at a table, stand around the bar, or dance on the smallish dance floor at the one end. The music they play is really good for dancing: classics, 80s, current hip hop... a good mix that my friends and I, who don't like clubs but like to dance, enjoy. As far as Irish pubs go it's pretty standard and chain-like, and the drinks aren't super-cheap, but it's a fun place to spend a Saturday night.

Pros: good music, fun atmosphere

Cons: sometimes lines to get in

Phenomenal Staff - Incredible Pub Experience

by navygurl

We like to eat out often in Center City and had never been to Fado before. The staff made us feel like had been coming there for years. Our server was Danielle who was relaxed yet proficient. She sat down with us to take our order and we had a little conversation. I told her that we had recently become engaged and she responded with the enthusiasm I would expect from a long time friend. She was quick to suggest a few of her favorite items on the menu - of which I ordered the Cheese Dip as an appetizer(with the Pico de Gallo on the side) and the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich - my fiance got the Barbecue Chicken Sandwich. All items were delicious and the portions were perfect. I still had enough room for a Guinness, which was on special! I will definitely be returning to Fado again due to the friendliness of the staff. Danielle even said hello to us two days later when we happened to walk past. haha We are now myspace friends.

Don't Bother

by mncl425

Crowded, Hot (the AC was broken), poor service, and cheezy atmosphere. It feels like the chain restaurant of Irish pubs (which apparently it is a chain). The quizzo was horrible - if you want quiz questions taken straight from the pages of US Weekly, this is the quizzo for you. This was our third time at the place, and we will not be back.

Pros: specials

Cons: ambience, service

Good bar and hang out spot with your friends

by afm76

When you're in the mood to hang out for a casual evening with a good sized group of friends on a random Friday night or after work, this is one of the places to be. The layout of this spot provides a little privacy in some sections. There's your good, straightforward pub/bar food and some British/Irish dishes - don't expect fine dining here.

good place to hangout with large group of people

by soblue4

Food is good. I went to Fado with 6 of my friends and we dont have to worry about space. The place is divided in to section so we have some privacy. Great beer selection, little bit expensive.

Pros: spacious, good food, beer selection

Cons: little bit over priced

Best in Philly

by irishpsu

I love this place. Doesn't matter if you want drinks, food, music and dancing, or somewhere to go and hang out with friends and watch sports this pub gives it all. The staff hardly ever changes which makes for great relationship building when you come back time and time again. The best part for me has the be the decor though. It's a nice atmosphere with a lot of irish decorations. The usual customer does not pay attention but if you take the time to look around in the display cases some of the things are really nice.

Pros: great for every occassion

Cons: parking can be a problem, but Latimer garage is cheap and good and right behind the bar

Horseman, Pass By

by bunkerman

On three separate occasions I endured the worst service imaginable from
indifferent, careless, and downright rude bartenders. The staff seems only
interested in talking amongst themselves, and actually seem annoyed when
asked to serve the customers. Memo to staff: good service = tips. Is anyone
in charge? Does anyone care? I think not. Which is too bad, because the Fado
pubs I've been to in Chicago and DC were lovely places.

Cons: Terrible Service, Too Many TVs

Fado Rocks

by rgarret

We thouroughly enjoyed Fado. There was abviously more thought put into the decor and the atmosphere than most of the irish pubs we've been to and the food was excellent. The service was a little slow, but our waiter and host were very nice and knowledgable and it was worth the time to enjoy the experience.

Pros: great food

Cons: slow service

FA-DON'T

by confusedgirl

I've eaten here twice and both times had really slow service. The place wasn't even crowded. The second time I visited, I had to ask at the bar for our waitress who still didn't show up for at least 10 minutes. The food was okay, not great. Not even very interesting. Just the usual greasy pub food. The fish and chips felt like a ton of bricks in my stomach after eating it. I guess its okay to drink there, but they really don't care about quick service there. Copa Too is definitely better.

Pros: atmosphere

Cons: greasy food, long wait, poor service

Outstanding service

by mhsouder

A friend and I stopped into Fado last weekend before a show at the Wilma. We both found the atmosphere charming and cozy and the food well above par. The best part was our waitperson...she was very friendly and accommodating, and we felt like the staff really wanted to make it a pleasant experience for us. Do yourselves a favor and check it out!

Pros: attentive service, cozy
