In Short
One day in 1930, Italian Market hot dog vendor Pat (King of Steaks) Olivieri got tired of his usual frankfurter lunch. He threw some beef on his grill with onions and put the meat on a bun and Philly's most famous food was literally born that day. Traditionally, cheesesteaks are cheese and steak on a roll and at Pat's, you get the real deal--they come with Cheez Whiz and fried onions unless specified otherwise.

The Inside Scoop

  1. Know Before You Go - You couldn't miss it if you tried: Geno's is right across the street. Don't even bother getting involved with the diehards there, or you'll be arguing cheese steaks all night.
  2. Save Time - Remember a few key terms, because you won't have a lot of time to order: Want a sandwich with American cheese instead of the default Cheez Whiz? Bark "American" at your server. Want fried onions? Just say "wid."

I'm from Michigan but have friends in the Philly area. When I visit them, all I want to know is when we're going to Pat's. It's a crappy place and the service is bad, and yes it's very dirty. It's part of the show. Little tiny dive, but man I'm telling you it's the best junk food in the world. I only get them once every couple years but it's worth it. Don't bother with Gino's or anywhere else - they're nowhere near as good.

You can go to any other part of the U.S. and purchase a piece of beef on a steak roll (as long as steak rolls are baked in that part of the country).

Traditionally, the finely sliced beef is chopped, on the grill, while it's being cooked.

I would sooner go on a diet than eat at Pat's Steaks today. Years ago, IT WAS THE BEST! Not today. Too lazy to chop and no pride in their product.

Pros: 24/7

Cons: Meat not chopped

Food served like a fire drill Juicy sloppy mess. It's not bad if you enjiy standing outside in the cold with Tomato sauce and Cheez wiz running down your arms.

The cheesewhiz says it all! If you want tradition, take a walking tour of the old city. If you want real food, you can find it almost anywhere else.

The meat was not cut enough and it was too tough to chew. Too expensive for the lack of quality. The customer service is horrible. Lived in Philly all my life and only went once and that is enough. The only reason why it is famous is because of Rocky.

Cons: crowded, horrible parking

I went to college in Philly and every time I ever go back to Philly now I have to stop at Pat's to get a Whiz With...there is nothing that tastes finer with Cheese Fries and a XL Dr. Pepper. Three Cheers for the Best 24 Hour Eatery known to man. Geno's can't even compare...

Pros: Fast Service, Great Food

Cons: Fatty Food, So-So Parking

Some of my most fond memories of my time spent at Temple University in the 1970's, are of my occaisional sojourns to Pat's Steaks. Not being a cheesesteak fan, I order mine "Steak wit", and have never been disappointed to this day. Living in Allentown is most depressing, our steak sandwiches up here are made with dog meat.....I think. :)

Pros: food, service, hot sauce

Cons: comfort, no bathroom

Oh my god....We drive over 2 1/2 hours to get this wonderful treat. I know that it is not healthy but if your gonna go, you are better off going with a cheese mustache and a smile on your face.

Cons: Dirty tables, It's cold outside, staff a little brazen

Ratings_icons DON'T BELIVE THE HYPE

If your looking for a really good cheese steak, do not go to Pats or Genos(although Pats Steaks is better than Genos). I have been eating cheese steaks since I was still in diapers and these two establishments don't make good cheese steaks. But it's not a bad place to go to fulfill one of those late night cravings.

Pros: super quick service, late hours

Cons: parking, exposed condiments, location

The perfect roll, the perfect ordering system, deliciously simple ingredients, all infused with so much grease you have to lean over to not dribble all over yourself. I suggest hot sauce and birch beer to top it off. Even if you have to sit in your car to eat after standing in the freezing winter wind to score one, it's totally worth it. Avoid it between 1:30 and 3:00am on weekends - unless you like a long line and a loud, rude, drunken sideshow as an appetizer.

Pros: neighborhood/scene, birch beer, open waaay late

Cons: sometimes long line

GREAT PLACE TO GO ANYTIME OF THE DAY OR NIGHT FOR A SNACK OR A MEAL. YOU CAN ALWAYS FIND SOMEONE YOU KNOW AT PAT'S. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO ORDER BECAUSE IT KEEPS THE LINE MOVING AND EVERYONE IS HAPPY WHEN THAT HAPPENS.

Pros: GREAT ROLLS, GOOD VALUE

Cons: POOR PARKING

Pat's cheesesteaks along with Geno's are about as generic as they come. People only go there because they saw a sign in someone's video. If you want a real cheesesteak go to Billy Bob's down by University City.

The only time Pat's is considered good eats, is when the "out of towners" and "party" crews eat there. For us locals there are a whole lot of corner steak shops that out rank Pat's. Pat's is good for their fries though.

tasha_bbbs

I do not know what all the hype is about Pat's Steak but I definitely have had better cheesesteak. The steaks there are chewy, tough and just not good. I know that Pat's is supposed to be a South Philly institution and you guys hold it in high regards but it really isn't the best cheesteak like every one claims it to be. I know that people have the opinions but this is just my take on things.

Ratings_icons There are other cheesesteak places!

Expressionist

They're social enviroment helps have an enjoyous meal and not a waste of time, and the option and taste of not only thier chessesteaks but thier cheese fries more than makes up for the gas money to get there, $3 to cross the bridge, and the purchace price for thier food. Also i wouldn't have my cheesesteaks made any other way than with the original CHEESE WIZ!!!

Pros: CHEESE WIZ, CHEESE FRIES, GREAT TASTE

Cons: PARKING, That's about, it!

Ratings_icons The old gray mare

oldtimo

As the title says The Old Gray Mare ain't what it use to be. Pat's is living on it's reputation. The steaks they serve now can be purched at the local supermarklet in the frozen food section. I had people in from Phoenix Az who said that they get better Philly steaks in Phoenix. ( I've had them and they are right). Get back to Basics.

Cons: slow service, indifference

For kitsch and phila 'tude, go for it. For steaks...ummm...let's just say for 6 days afterwards I was picking grizzle out of my teeth. the beef was chewy and dry.

A Philly institution? Sure. The best steaks in town? No. Not even close. Go for the experience, but for a real steak head outside the city limits for Pudge's in Blue Bell...better, cheaper, the BEST.

The meat (what little could be found on the sandwich) was grizzly. I've had better cheesesteak at just about every pizza shop I've been to.

Ratings_icons NOPE.....GENO'S!!!

sacco23

Geno's is better than Pat's no question. I am not saying Pat's is bad, but I don't see how anyone could prefer Pat's. The determing factor lies in Pat's carelessness with the onions -- sometimes Pat's leaves them half raw, and sometimes extra soggy. Geno's onions however, are superiorly fried.

Pros: cheese wiz option, quick service, open all night

Cons: poor onion quality, unholy amount of ..., griese

Tourist trap warning. This place may have great atmosphere, but unless you are a native South Philly person an objective look at the steak shows it to be lousy. Gristle and a small amount of steak on a roll with melted plastic cheese--YUCK. Bad value you need to eat 2 or 3 to get filled up. Dalessandro's is head and shoulders above this inadequate sandwich.

Pros: dirty sidewalk, atmosphere, history

Cons: gristle, chhese wiz, small portions

Either way, Pat's King of Steaks is by far the best place to eat a cheesesteak(s) in Philly. Where else can you hear street performers sing and listen to smooth jazz 106.1 on the radio all while enjoying an all-philadelphian cheesesteak?

Most definately the BEST CHEESESTEAKS in Philly. The nice thick cuts of beef, great selection of cheese, great roll, fast service (even if the line wraps allaround the block). Definately #1.

Mushroom Prov, wid'out...

Pros: Best overall steak, fast service, 24/7

Cons: none, none, none

Bleh!! The "Loser" of steaks! 1MonthAgo I ordered their classic cheesteak, with Wiz and No Onions. The roll wasn't firm enough and the meat, although flavorful, was the worst. It was extremely tough and gristly. I have never had a gristly cheesesteak before. Maybe that was a fluke. Nope, every bite was gristly. Afterwards while driving home I my friends confirmed the lousiness of a Pat's Cheesesteak. Other cheesesteak runs by my friends have had similar results. Recently, in the Philadlephia Inquirer, the newspaper held a taste test for the area's best cheesesteaks. Guess who came dead last? Pat's "King" of steaks. I'm sure they were better. 5.50 is a lot for a cheesesteak, especially if it the worst one I've ever had. I won't eat there until you get your act together, Mr. Oliveri. Believe me, folks. Ignore those other reviews. Pat's sucks.

Pros: Tourist place

Cons: Bad Food, Expensive, Dirty

Ratings_icons PATS vs. GENOS - PAT'S IS THE WINNER!

shandlin

My boyfriend and I decided to put the argument to the test-I went to Genos and got a steak and he obtained one from Pat's. Side by side, the Pat's steak was fuller with meat. The true test was in the tasting. Pat's had a better meat flavor than Geno's. Now we know!
