Very Happy to here this little gem reopend. My family and I love this place. We've never been unhappy w/ the food it has always been consitently very good. Oh, and can I say my girlfriends and I love the Margaritas there, just bring your own Tequila. We are resturant owners our self and truley enjoy this NON CHAIN resturant. Please keep supportting non chain resturants.
Hidalgo ? a tasteless waste of time. We arrived in good spirits, excited to find a local Mexican restaurant close to home. We sat down in the cramped but cozy restaurant and waited. We were not greeted by a soul for over 20 minutes. After speaking to the owner, she sent a server over. I ordered chicken fajitas and my girlfriend ordered steak. The server was so busy chewing her gum she didn??t even bother to ask how she wanted the steak prepared. My girlfriend offered medium rare and the girl left. A different server walked over with chips. We had to reiterate our drink order as we still had not received the requested water. The owner??s daughter came by to speak with us. She claimed they needed money because they didn??t have any food. It is a shame they feel the need to have their daughter begging to customers when she obviously has food. Contrary to what many of the reviews stated the food actually didn??t take that long. Unfortunately the fajitas were tasteless and the steak overcooked. A different server stopped to ask how the food was. My girlfriend requested they take it back as it was terrible and remove it from the check. The server told us she had to ask the manager, owner. The owner came over in a tiffy and took the plates and told us to just go. She proceeded to actually ask some of the other customers how their meal was and then went into the back slamming plates. She actually followed us out of the store yelling at us telling us to have a better attitude and claiming that the staff was working hard. I have been to restaurants and have seen staff working hard ?? here there were hardly working. Save yourself the time and frustration, try Don Memos in Darby ?? great food and I have never gotten yelled at.
Fantastic Restaurant! It is definitely slow-paced, so don't go if you are in a hurry (it usually takes us around 3 hours to eat there). Also, note that it has moved from Secane to Clifton Heights, on Baltimore Ave. right across from the pizza hut. It really is the best mexican food we have had ever.
When my friends and i were searching for a really good, authentic Mexican restaurant we laughed at the fact we thought it would be in secane. Low and Behold...it proved us wrong. This place is top notch for ambiance, quality food and amazing service. The owner has a true passion for celebrating food and she shared it with us. It's BYOB but they will make margaritas (huge ones) for you if you bring tequila. The salsa is the bomb, the burrito was so tasty and the dessert was to die for. I am making this a MUST have every time I visit my hometown!!
For those of you who already have a passion for Mexican food this is a treasure. For anyone who 'thinks' they don't prefer it, if you give it one try...you'll be hooked!
The BYOB, family restaurant is moderatly sized and the decor is bright. The owner herself will seat you, discuss the evenings specials and take your order while her husband is the chef.
The menu has something for everyone, but if you ask, you may request to alter the dish within reason. The food is nothing short of wonderful and reasonably priced. The flavors are true and authentic, beautifully presented and the portions are ample and delicious. Everything is from scratch, made on the premises.
Do not miss the Tres Leches Cake which the owner makes herself and is the best I've ever had.

My girlfriend and I eat out rather frequently, try to support local businesses and generally avoid the chain restaurants. But the owner/waitress of Hidalgo needs to get a clue. We ordered two of the pricier entrees (one of them a "special") and an order of chips and pico de gallo to start. Then she informs us that we "have to order appetizers too" because we brought our own beer.
Let's see - we've just ordered $45 of food, and would surely have given them the opportunity to gouge us on a second order of chips, but this disgusting woman felt the need to tell my girlfriend and I what we had to order to "cover her expensive rent" (her words). Appalled, we left, at my girlfriend's insistence.
I fully believe some of the other reviews that rave about the food, but can't believe that in a weak economy a restaurant would chase customers away like that. Considering that all that rent pays for their spot in an otherwise-empty strip mall in Delaware County, you'd think they would be a bit more welcoming to new customers.
Oh yeah - the owner also followed us outside with my half-finished bottle of Sierra Nevada that I had to leave on the table. "YOU need to throw this out!!!" she said, and left it on the ground in front of her own restaurant. Really classy!
Pasted from my Yelp review :
My family is very keen on authentic Latin American food, to put it mildly, and so we were beyond thrilled to find this restaurant in our backyard. This is a family-owned joint, NOT a chain, and features food from the region where they are from (Hildalgo, Mexico), in the central part of the country. We were also beyond thrilled that it's a BYOB, which to us is usually BYOW (wine); they also have margarita mix on hand if you BYOT (tequila). Food has been consistently very good to great. Service is is consistently slow to very slow because there are only two people waiting tables (the mom and one of her daughters), and mom is often busy explaining to tables that service _will_ be slow "because this is not fast food place". So don't rush her if you don't want to get lectured...just relax and enjoy the very good house salsa that is served with freshly deep-fried tortilla chips. We _always_ get at least one of ceviches, and often go for the entree specials that they clearly fuss over. But the normal menu is great, too -- I'll try to get a photograph of that someday and post it. Check out photos (above) for views of a recent meal we had. This restaurant is really good for kids and groups. OK to be loud and have a good time. If business is slow, the mom will sing for you. Really. Hours are 4:30-10:00pm except on Sunday when they close at 9:00pm. [Note: they have lots of American Express stickers around the room, and even American Express check holders -- but they don't TAKE American Express (Visa and Mastercard OK).] Go often and tell your friends -- I'd hate for this place to go under for lack of business.
Pros: Authentic
If you want excellent, authentic Mexican food, this is the place! Everything my husband and I have tried has been just wonderful, and you can have it "hot" or not. If you're lucky the owner will treat you with a song or two; she has a beautiful, powerful voice. Don't miss this place--it's a real find!
Pros: BYOB
Cons: What are the drawbacks?
