I used State Farm on Girard Ave. in Philadelphia for car and home. Had my sewage pipe back up into my basement- total nightmare. It even affected my home's heating system, it blew that air into my home from a pvc pipe connecting the central air to the sewage line (like that when I moved in a year ago). After over 20 hours of cleanup and paying a plumber to clear the line from the curb, I called state farm (knowing plumbing is not covered, but damaged incurred may be.) They referred me to a claims specialist who offered to send out Serv Pro to help finish the cleanup. I asked him to send the adjuster first to see if the main issue, a safe heating system, would even be covered. No worries, we will get the process started before the adjuster makes time to come out in 3 or 4 days by sending out Serv Pro first within 2 hours; be sure to give them your $1,000 deductible first to get started. WOW. Rude at best, scandalous at worst. The cleanup was no longer even the main concern. Didn't even realize that not only was my premium high, but also my deductible. And giving a stranger $1,000 of my money just so you will send an adjuster out at a later date? I couldn't just drop off the deductible to the insurance office the next day after I had a chance to take a shower? UNREAL. I am switching to Travelers immediately, where my home owners deductible is $500, my premium is much lower, and in case of an event the deductible will be charged against the claim, like a civilized company would do. And yes my car premium (never had an accident in my life) was also very high compared to the exact same coverage from Travelers. Total annual savings for both- $900!!!
I of course will eat the cost of damages done to my basement floor and walls; and the cost of having my heater taken apart and cleaned. Well worth it to cancel my claim and say goodbye to such AMAZING NONSENSE! Incidently, state farm was very diligent in pursuing me when I had switched banks to make sure I gave them the correct new info for direct withdrawal from my account monthly. Several letters and phone calls, as I recall, over the course of a few weeks.
