My husband and I were given two $25.00 gift cards to Derek's as a wedding gift from a cousin. We were married on 9/5/2009. We live in West Chester, so we don't make it out to Manayunk often and they have been sitting in a pile of cards since we were married. We decided we wanted to use them, so I dug them out and was a little upset to find that on the back of the cards it reads "After 12 months of non-use, a $3.00 monthly service fee will be deducted from the remaining balance." I called to find out what the balance on each card is and they say there is $1.00 on each and there is nothing they can do. We will never patronize this business ever.??

First of all I would like to say that if I lived closer to Derek's I would eat there every night.
I only eat whole organic foods and Derek's is one of the only places around that serves up meals that taste as good as they are for you.
They are also one of the only places in Philly that will serve you a truly rare piece of meat.
Other reviewers here that complain about the seating, food or the owner must be living in some other dimension than I am. Derek is probably one of coolest chefs in Philly. He is as down to earth as they come, he talks to every one that comes into his place. He is a gentle, kind person who actually listens to you when you talk to him.
If you want to talk about food Derek is full of information and anecdotes. Every ingredient he uses is the freshest and best available. Most of the ingredients are from small local purveyors and you can taste the freshness.
As far as the seating goes, the place is a bit cramped, yes. But this is Manyunk, the restaurants are all in row homes, same as Sansom St. in West Philly or Downtown. If you want to eat in a warehouse you can always head to a chain steakhouse in King of Prussia and spend twice as much money on meat and veggies that show up on an eighteen wheeler twice a week.
Derek's beer selection is tremendous, wines are superb.
The problem is Derek has taste, real taste. He is not a trend follower, he is not a poser, he is a Philly native who brings his own style and passion to his dishes. The food at Derek's is exactly the same food Derek serves to guests at his home. Its food that Derek loves himself, its not meant to impress reviewers.

His menu varies from day to day but at its core its been very much the same for years -- because its truly good local cuisine, like Chez Panice in Berkeley.

If you want to impress your date take her to some flashy new joint opened up by some restaurant developer.

But if you want to eat good food, that's good for you, that's good for the community and that's prepared to perfection by one of Philly's own great chef's then eat at Derek's

Pros: Food Is Great. Derek uses only the best local ingredients

Cons: People in Philly are Clueless About Food

Being new to Manayunk, a friend from school told me about this place. I ordered a burger, (I know, real classy) and it was divine! The bread they give out for starters was delish! I will def be back when family and friends visit!

My husband, brother in law and sister in law and I went to Derek's for Valentines Day dinner and while I can say the food was just OK, we found the owner to be extremely rude. We were sat right next to the host stand and my husband and I were taking menu's to the back all night. The host kept banging, kicking and leaning on the the back of our booth. When our food came out mine was cold, so it was sent back and for a fine dining experience I wouldn't have expeced the food to be thrown in the microwave, but it was. The portions were very small, but the prices weren't bad (approximately $25 an entree). Before we left my husband walked up to the owner (who was talking to every table except for ours even though he knew we were unhappy) and told him that he might want to ask the host to stop leaning on the booth and banging menus into the customers so the next parties experience would be pleasant. The owners response... "Yeah, I hear ya"! I wasn't surprised at all by his response.

We live in the area and will NEVER go to Derek's again, nor will we recommend it to ANYONE!

My boyfriend and I went here for dinner the other night and I was ready to walk out the door almost immediately. It was so cold in there, I could not even take off my coat and scarf! The tables are so close together and there is no privacy. Another group of three came and sat at the table next to us and I could not believe it. Their coats and bags were all over our table as they were trying to get settled. They were literally sitting right on top of us. I had enough, but unfortunately we had brought our own wine which had already been opened. Our waiter wasn't much better. He was way overbearing and used inappropriate language. We asked to be moved, and we were brought upstairs. It was slightly better, only because we sat at a four top with only two people. The waitress at the table next to us had her rear end on our table as she was taking their order because there was not enough room to stand! The food was less than mediocre. My tomato soup was cold and I have made better Campbell's soup myself! The steak was okay, but again it was cold after a few minutes. I think it had to do with the room temp being so cold. I sat uncomfortable all night. I have had many steak dinners at Outback that were much better than this (and cheaper).! The chocolate cake I had was average, nothing to rave about at all. Overall, bad experience with overpriced food. We will not be going back and will not recommend it to anyone!!

The food was horrible, definitely not worth the $$. The seating was like sitting in a shoe box, at one point i thought the person next to me was going to ask for a bite. I basically felt like I was cheated and disappointed. I will never return to Derek's for dinner again and I will make sure I tell everyone I know what a sub par establishment this place is. If you read this, do yourself a favor, go somewhere else if you are looking to go out for dinner in Manayunk.

My husband and I really enjoyed Sonoma so when it was changed to Derek's we thought we would try it out, expecting the same great food. The food was still good but the prices are a lot higher now and the portions are so much smaller. The atmosphere is a lot better now. Very trendy. And of course we loved their candy infused vodka.

We just left Derek's and we can't get over how great everything was. From the moment we made our reservation until the gorgeous hostess looked me right in the eye and thanked me for coming and made sure that we had a great time. First, our waiter Jim recommended some awesome martinis while he got us a platter of amazing local cheeses. My Lychee Martini was served perfectly chilled and garnished with a whole lychee, my date had the Ruby Zealander and thought it to be equally yummy. besides the cheeses all of the food was perfectly seasoned and came out timed just as we wanted it. The music here is always a treat. I'm told that one of the managers regularly programs the i-pods with a blend of progressive rock, cool jazz, indie and other timeless classics. I could sit for hours and just drink and listen to the cool sounds. What I like here is the ability to eat light or eat heavy. I usually get a melange of small plates and they are never really "too small" like at a lot of city joints. Anyway, if you find yourself in Manayunk you should check out Derek's, it's "way cool" and the food is great. Get the gnocchi and the hanger steak. My absolute favorite is the secret chicken, and the hostess!

From the girl who greeted us to the bartender to the wait staff to Derek himself are all wonderful & treat their customers with respect. The food is amazing & they always make you feel at home. This is an old favorite, but we decided to try Coopers. What a disappointment. From the awful food to the Owner Bruce Cooper & his man/boy who handles the place who were rude & disrespectful to the customers. We left & came running back to the comfort, great food, service & friendly atmosphere of Derek's.

Remembering the days of the fab 3 ? Arroyo, Kansas City Prime, and Sonoma ? I didn?t flinch when my girlfriend recommended Derek?s for Sunday brunch. After the name change, I had dinner there and it was OK but never brunch.

We arrived and the air in the dining room was stale and humid. The brunch menu was short but all the items looked great. My boyfriend elected to order a burger from the regular menu. After hearing a bus boy drop what sounded to be an entire bin of place settings, a runner delivered our food. My omelet came accompanied with potatoes and fruit. The fruit was fresh but looked as though a child cut it with a plastic knife as it was mashed in the corner of my black square plate. The potatoes had enough grease underneath them, you could see the reflection of the skylight? The omelet was fair although very bland and un-colorful which complimented the very drab colors that surround. I would expect this at a greasy spoon diner but on Main St?

To make a long story short, my boyfriend (a chef for many years) ended up horribly sick and in the bathroom for the next 15 hours (not an exaggeration). We don?t know if it was an undercooked burger or e-coli but something was not right.

I spent the next day taking care of him and feeling awful I ever exposed him to Derek?s.

We go out to restaurants all over Philadelphia often and this is the very first time in about 8 years I have ever had to write a bad review?

Please proceed with caution going to Derek?s. Maybe they were just having a really bad day in the kitchen yesterday but it was enough that I will never patronize this place again. I used to love this place...

never again...

Tonight my boyfriend and I decided to venture out of Center City to Manayunk for dinner. At the advice of a friend we decided to stop by Derek's... we should have turned around.

As someone in the industry I appreciate good service and give credit to the front of house. Service was prompt, friendly, and attentive. The food, on the other hand, was EXTREMELY disappointing and overpriced for the quality. To start I had the lobster bisque and he had the broccoli cheese soup. The bisque was great; it was flavorful, smooth, and the crab cake was a nice touch. The broccoli soup, however, was very mediocre (he commented how Campbell's does it better!).

For the entree my boyfriend ordered the filet and I chose to go with the "surf and turf", which was one of the specials. I highly discourage anyone from ordering this. It is essentially a big pile of arugala greens with two dried out skewers of what I was told was beef tenderloin and marlin. The beef reminded me more of a discount piece of swiss steak that had been ignored and left to dry out on the grill. The marlin tasted like left over chicken, equally as dry and flavorless. I picked at the meat, gave up, and ate my $21 pile of greens. The filet was OK. The meat was cooked correctly. The mashed potatoes were bland. A third of the plate was covered with deep fried onion...stuff.

We were going to get dessert but decided to avoid further disappointment. During the ride home I kept thinking "I wish we went there" ever time we passed a different restaurant.

We were initially impressed with the atmosphere and the friendly service and nice wine list, but it went down hill after that.. We hardly ever send back food. It has to be pretty awful, but the mussels were just that. I eat mussels is all kinds of sauces, but they were grttty and fishy and left a bad after taste.. My gnocchi was salty and his venison was just ok.. we asked for desert and coffee but the server told us everything was shut down. (It was only 10:30!) After spending $120 on dinner, they should have made coffee if we wanted it ? or asked us during the meal if we would be wanting it after? I would not eat there again and I would not recommend it.

I really enjoyed the service at Derek's. We went 2/15/08. The waitstaff was wonderful the food was great!! The only downside was the owner Derek. My guest " who happens to be named Derek" introduced himself to"Derek", unfortunately the owner was more interested in talking to a waiter, when my friend introduced me, it was like he was more interested in having his conversation. First impressions are really important to the consumer, if you are having a conversation, take the five minutes to speak with the people that just spent money in your establishment. My family and friends are always looking for a nice restaurant for birthdays and celebrations.(by the way the conversation did NOT seem to be of a business matter). All in all I will come back to your restaurant, the food was very good.

I found Derek's online and was impressed with the menu and the fact that you can BYOB even though they have a large wine list. I made a reservation well in advance but my party of 8 had to wait almost 2 hours to be seated! When we got there we were told it would take only 10 minutes to be seated. We spoke to the manager numerous times and each time we were told that we would be seated shortly. He needs to learn how to set proper expectations. A little after 10pm we finally got our seat only to be placed right next to a DJ which was setting up for the night. The food was average and considering the awful service, I would NOT recommend this place. My night out with my friends was filled with frustration and mediocre food. The only good thing about the restaurant was the wine that WE brought!

I love waltzing into Derek's anytime and everyone smiles at me. Being that I live in the neighborhood this is my "go-to" place. Every neighborhood should have a place like Derek's. I can stumble in on Sunday morning all hungover, have my brunch, read my paper, and watch my football. I can bring dates here and show off with the great bar and winelist and have a gourmet meal of local seasonal foods. The specials are always great because I can be assured that it is the freshest and most seasonal. I even threw my girlfriend a surprise birthday party here last year, everybody loved the appetizers and some of her friends have become regulars after coming here for the first time. The burger here is as good as it gets, so is the filet mignon [even though it's triple the price of the burger, but well worth it!] My favorite things at Derek's are the chopped salad, the spring rolls, and the apple cobbler. Anytime!

I used to live in Manayunk and frequently went to Derek's. The food was always good, service not a problem and bar scene upstairs/downstairs was a good time throughout the week/end. It's a good place to get away from the other bars on Main Street that are more fraternity oriented. In my opinion its in the top 3 of restaurants on Main Street. It's decor is more of a lounge/bar/restaurant with granite rather than wood bars. It's one place on Main Street I enjoyed having a good, relaxing meal and drinksss.

The service is slow and the waiters are far from friendly. The portions are small and pricey. The only thing good is the comfy seats at the bar and the wine selection. Try Burbon Blue, US Hotel or the Brew Pub if your really looking to dine in Manayunk!

A great concept (reasonable Bistro) which falls short on execution. I have had the occasion to have cold soup, lack luster service, and mixed up meals at Derek's. For such a great looking place with lots of vibe, the food is really very poor. The one thing that has been common about my 3 visits is that their food is always lacking in something...correct texture, warmth, spice, timing with other meals, etc. If you must go....go for the wine or atmosphere, but not for the food. As a traveler I know good restaurants and good food, I can say that Derek's has some work to do to be described as good in either category.

I was so excited to get the cheesecake for dessert but when I received it, "oh my" I was beyond disapointed!! It was horrible to say the least. 4 biscut looking pieces of cheesecake that tasted nothing like what a cheesecake should taste like. PASS on this dessert and save yourself the $8.00! Instead order a keylime martini!

I have been a lunch-time regular here for quite some time, and don't understand the rave reviews. On any given weekend, the staff is inattentive, the menu a bore and if you are unlucky enough to be seated in the back of the room you'll notice dirty floors, broken, creaky banquets and a fly or two might buzz by your entree. I try to avoid Derek's as much as possible.

Derek's billed the event as "Only a total of 150 tickets will be sold to assure you enjoy your drink, food, and atmosphere and are not standing in lines or shoulder to shoulder with people." Upon arriving, we were forced to stand shoulder to shoulder with the waitstaff, constantly dodging the trays and carafe's they were carrying. So much for the uncrowded and relaxing evening that was promised. As we left, several more people were arriving. Had we stayed, we would have had to fight them just to find a seat as everyone had supposedly "exclusive" tickets. The only positive was that Zesty's down the street was much less crowded and its waitstaff took care of us. In fairness, while I was extremely disappointed as we had brought several out-of-town guests, Derek's did promise us a refund for the tickets that we purchased without too much of a hassle.

My friends and I love Dereks on a weeknight. There's a food and drink special Monday through Thursday nights, usually a cocktail and a small entree for around $5 each. The restaurant and bar are much quieter on these nights, and its a great place to have a cocktail with friends after a busy workday. Overall a little overpriced when there arent specials, and the bar is a weird mix on the weekends. If you know when to go, it can be a great experience.

I'm updating my review with more recent comments:

My boyfriend and I ususally make this our "date-night" restaurant on Fridays. We've had pretty good luck; we've always gotten friendly servers who are knowledgeble about the menu and the wine list, we've always been really pleased with the food, and most of the time, we both opt for the 3 for $30. We went to Derek's about two weeks ago, only to find our favorite things on the menu and wine list gone. The server informed us they "like to keep the menu fresh". I was disappointed with the new pasta choice (chicken with pesto over spinach linguine) on the prix fixe menu. The pesto was too oily, there was too much pesto for the amount of pasta on the plate, and it was bland. I know it costs the restaurant less to make, but the chicken ravioli was much better. We wont stop going here, but we definetly wont be here quite as much.

My girlfriend and I went to Philadelphia for the weekend and decided on Derek's. Let me start of by saying that everyone was super nice. The hostess especially!!! After being 1 hour late for our reservation (traffic) the hostess catered to our every need. She even carried out a conversation as she greeted us. on top of all that, she sat us in the bar came back like 2 minutes later and told us she had a much better seat where it would be more comfortable and it would be quieter. Our server was actually delightful as well.
As for the food, I would say just average. I am defiantly a food connoisseur and it takes a lot to impress me. My first mistake was ordering a steak when I wasn't eating at a steak restaurant. The appetizers where delicious so maybe we should have had something else to eat.
I am really writing to rave about the perfect service and delightful experience in Philadelphia.

I live in the general neighborhood and I can afford [thank god] to eat out every meal. I also eat out in many different cities because I travel for a living. Sometimes, I can not wait to get home so I can eat at Derek's. It is just like having my own restaurant! They are so accomodating to me and my friends. If they have it they will make whatever I want. I especially love the mix and match small plates and I almost always order one of Derek's specials. Everybody is so nice here[I guess they know where thier bread is buttered,! I tip pretty well!] I can sit in the dining room at a nice intimate booth and have a formal wine dinner with a date, or I can have a burger at the bar watching the Phillies lose anither one with the boys. This is my favorite place in Philly, Manayunk, and The Main Line.

I want to thank Derek's for generously offering lunches to all of our musicians during their grouling rehearsals before all of our concert weekends, throughout the year. Derek's is not just a fantastic place to eat and mingle in downtown Manayunk, it is a generous hand to small nonprofits that need all the help they can get. So for this we thank you!!!!

It was a sunny Sunday, my friend and I snagged an outside table. We ordered calamari, and two salads for a light lunch- it was crowded, so we figure order something easy so they can't mess it up! Well, the table was crooked, so all the drinks and food kept sliding off the table. The calamari was good- however- I don't know where they went to get our lettuce, but it look over an hour to get our food! The couple next to us ordered after us and got their food first!! We had to track down- the waiter to find our food, we also asked for the check in advance, bc we were meeting some people, we figured 2 hours would be enough to get a small appetizer and quick salad, apparently not. Oh and we had to remind the waiter twice for our check!

I went in for brunch and it was excellant! The best brunch I've had in a long time. It seemed fairly busy and the staff was always in the right place at the right time.
The Steak & Eggs were great, lots of flavor; and the Eggs Bene was a great twist on the good o'l stand by. Oh, and although I was too full to "thouroughly" enjoy the Bloody Mary special, $15 bottomless bloody mary's and any item from the brunch menu, they were delicious! From what I hear one of the Chefs created the recipe? :)

First off, any bar that is non-smoking is right for me. I love the fact that i can hang all night, watch sports, and then go home and not smell like cigarette smoke! I think that this place has it all for me. I can have a burger or pizza at the bar, or have a four course dinner in the beautiful dining room. The people are a bit older and more sophisticated than the rest of Main Street.[Have they gotten younger, or are we just getting older?] I dig the small plate menu and am so happy that I can sample many things and not be overwhelmed by so much food. The waitresses are also pretty hot, a bonus!

We found Derek's to be quite disappointing. It's very crowded and noisy and is more of a scene than a restaurant. The food was average overall. $16.95 for 2 small lamb chops was overpriced and the whole grilled fish for $24.95 was bland and tasteless. The bread basket was completely burnt and should have never been served. Then there's the ridiculous "half-price" wine list! The bottle of Jumilla we had was listed at $52 and then "discounted" to $26. This is an $8 bottle of wine so the mark-up was still over 300%! Some discount. The waiter brings the wine and nearly empties the entire bottle into our glasses! Then the overflow crowd at the door is standing in front of our booth as we eat, how private and romantic! Derek's has potential but if you want serious dining then go somewhere else.

My wife and I had some out of town guests so we decided to take them into Manayunk when we came across Derek's. We stopped in for drinks and wound up staying for dinner. The food was outstanding. I highly recommend the shrimp ravioli and lamb chops. Make sure you leave room for dessert. Our sever was terrific and let us know about the "half price" wine list. We tried an awesome sauvignon blanc for under $30. Our friends can't wait to come back and visit. I almost forgot the best part, the entire restaurant and bar is smoke free!!!

My wife and I usually go to Sonoma's during August on our wedding anniversay and my birthday which was last night. Upon arrival, it just wasn't right. Now, it's Derek's
Sonoma, a loud, uninhabitable place where you take your chances.

It was crowded, loud and the food left much to be desired.

As a well-renowned caterer in Philly, we know good food and attention to detail.

Derek's lacks both. The waiter either did not know what he was doing or he didn't know what he was doing (or maybe he did not care). The food was sub-par, the liquor
was missing in our drinks (:{) and the ambiance was atrocious.

If you want to go to a place where you rather be heard and don't care about
the food or service, I strongly recommend going to Derek's Sonoma.

Last night was our swan song. Sonoma - WE MISS YOU!!

The first time I went to Sonoma our group was seated outside the restaurant in a romantic atmosphere (with white lights surrounding the table). Our group consisted of 7 people, ages ranging from 20 to 65. The service was excellent along with the varitey of food. (By the way I must recommend the chicken sandwich with sauteed muchrooms and peppers..for less than $7!) While we were there, the manager approached us and asked us for feedback on our visit...and he rewarded us with a sample of "twisted teas" that were not even on the menu. The only thing I would change would be the proximity of the tables. I have been there approximately 6 times since this initial visit and I have never found my opinion to vary. Sonoma defintely lives up to their slogan "Manayunk is the place to drink. Sonoma is the place to go to eat."

By far one of the worst dining experiences in near memory! Everything was a complete disappointment. Our waitress, the food, and the prices. The asian beef salad I ordered had very little beef in it, substituted angel hair pasta for what was advertised as "vermicelli", and was drowned in very oily dressing. It took more than a half hour to get any food, and the waitress's continous promises that it "would be out in two minutes, promise" were clearly based on nothing other than her own wishful thinking. Avoid at all costs.

I generally don't like to eat in Manayunk or the other city hotspots, but a friend was in from out of town and wanted to try it because of the grass-fed beef and the half-price wine (by the bottle) on Sundays. Service was prompt and the waiter was very knowledgeable. One of the wines we wanted was out of stock and the waiter went to another restaurant (under the same owners) to see if they had it. They did not, but he recommended an excellent substitute. The food we ordered was delicious and was served promptly. Prices are very reasonable for the quality. The tables are small and close together and we were near the kitchen so it was noisy, but not annoyingly so. Parking in Manayunk is always in short supply, but there is a lot a short distance away. I will go there again.
