I was really leery of cold cheese on hot pizza, but it was pretty good. The crust is the best thing about this pizza. It's really crispy. If it weren't, the cold cheese thing would not work at all. I thought the sauce was VERY good, mild, not too sweet, with chunks of tomatoes. I'm a big fan of pizza toppings, but this is not the place to get them, get plain cheese, you'll be glad you did. Not the best pizza in the world, but I'd definitely go back.

I have lived everywhere in the U.S. all my life. Both my parents were born and raised in Pittsburgh. At least 4 times a year, my family and I make the 8 hour drive...and Beto's is ALWAYS our first stop!! The cold cheese mixed with the warm thick crust causes this amazing and refreshing flavor to explode in your mouth. The sauce is thick and full of tomato chunks like real, homemade pizza sauce is meant to be. And at about $1.50 a slice, you never break your bank getting a good mouthfull taste of Pittsburgh.
The parking lot isn't ideal, but it never seems to stop me from enjoying myself while I'm there. I've been an avid Beto's lover for at least 10 years. And before I make that 8 hour drive back to TN, I always stop and buy Beto's, with the cheese on the side. It'll only last 2 days in my fridge at home, but it's a highlight to any trip up North.

I have been visiting this Pizza Powerhouse since 1965. Yes. almost 45 years. This was by far, the best fresh and unique pizza ever made. Sadly, for the last 10 years their pizza has been so inconsistent, I can now only eat the Italian Hoagie's that are well done. The 28 cut pizza trays are now ...way, way overdone. The dough is now, burnt on the bottom, in most places. This erases that great, fresh baked, "Italian Bread", YEASTY, flavor in the dough. Like the fresh bread, the great, MANCINNI's bread bakery, creates on a daily, very consistent basis, in McKees Rocks Pa...just down the river. So Jimmy...always serve your pizza's crust, on the "RARE" side and that Drop Dead, 1960's, 70's and 80's, BETO's PIZZA, magic will be back...!

Cons: BURNT Pizza Crust is now "SADLY", a comon occurrence..!

I went to try this pizza. It was original and interesting and good. They were still remodeling the eating area. I sat down with a number and waited for my pizza. I looked at what others were eating. It was good pizza, good tasting pepperoni with some cheese thrown on it......
Some brothers from the hood didn't like me looking at them. On there way out they yelled at me, "YO, WHAT ARE YOU LOOKIN AT, THIS IS BETO'S PIZZA HERE!" Everyone stared at me to my embarassment. I went back later and there weren't any hoods there. I liked the pizza, but rough crowd. JEESH!

You have to buy it by the slice... so there is no chance you'll be getting a fresh hot slice... "Pizza" comes slapped down in front of you drowning in cold unmelted cheese and cold canned toppings. At least I know why they don't offer sausage topping, THEY WOULD HAVE TO COOK IT!

I decided to bring the pizza home and heat it in my oven... trying to make the best of $16 thrown out the window. By the time I got home, the extra extra extra cheese had sorta melded (notice I didn't say melted as the crust was barely warm at serving) in to a mass of grossness. I ended up picking off most of the cheese and trying to heat up the original pizza and toppings... In the end I just gave up, disgusted.

open your mind and open your mouth
All pizza is not created equal, that would be like saying all barbeque sauce taste the same.
Some Mom and pop operations work hard to put out a good pie. The pizza pretenders start with a ready made shell ,when you see that, RUN!
Stay away from assembly line food with prefabricated ingredients, places that can afford a television commercial , can not afford quality ingredients . A homemade crust is the foundation that holds the succulent toppings. The sauce must be the neutralizer , not to spicy, not to sweet
the cheese is the most important ingredient . When you get these things right , you do not even need crazy toppings. all this comes together at
Beto's pizza on Banksville rd. no deliveries pick up only .

I have lived in Greentree for over 2 years and have heard rave reviews of this Pizza Pusher, so I decided after much procrastination to give it a try.
This was quite possibly, no I would say definately the WORST Pizza I have ever had. The crust tasted, well cardboard tastes better, no flavor in the sauce, raw cheese, and I paid 45cents per slice for CANNED Green Peppers, canned not fresh, not even warm for that matter. I waited 15 minutes for raw pizza??? To top that off I had to cook my pizza for 30 more minutes when I got home, 2 minutes up the road

I am sorry.... but I am an avid pizza fan! I kept reading about how Beto's is the BEST in the Burgh... LIES LIES LIES LIES LIES! I went there at like 2:00 in the afternoon on a Tuesday.... WAITED FOREVER... There weren't even that many people in front of me... I was so excited because I love that style pizza.... But then they slopped cold cheese all over it... I thought maybe it was something new and different I would like.... NOPE... GROSS! I tasted it and it had absolutely NO flavor... The sauce tasted like someone opened up a can of crushed tomatoes and just slathered them all over some plain crust... No flavoring AT ALL... Then I drove a MILE home... And it was cold already... I just hated it... I could not eat one piece... That's how awful it was.... I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT AT ALL.... Take a drive over the hill and go to Fiori's.... Their pizza is PHENOMINAL....

If you like cold pizza and rude employees then this place is for you. Oh, and did I mention that unless you're feeding a crowd of 20, you're only option is to order by the slice?! Yep, you can't get just a regular 10-slice pizza here. Not worth my time or yours!

I like pizza. It's nice to be able to walk into a shop that has pizza by the slice and walk out in a couple minutes. Not at Beto's. I had never been in there and wanted to try the pizza. I walked in and ordered five slices. I stood there for 35 minutes. 35 minutes for pizza that has cold toppings on it. It was ridiculous. They had one kid with one pizza serving about twenty cutomers. One pizza at a time. How long can it take to throw cold toppings on some crust with sauce on it? The pizza was all cold by the time I got home. I also saw the hoagie guy cleaning his service area with the spachula and tossing the waste in a garbage can, then scraping off the inside of the oven with the spachula, then he scrapped the spachula on the inside of the garbage can and put the spachula back on his cleaning area to use again. The pizza was below average. Not recommended at all.

you must be kidding...this pizza is the sixth best pizza in the whole city? And Papa John's and Pizza Hut are in the top five? I am a recent transplant here and I am afraid I will have to either make my own or rely on frozen. Beto's pizza is a disgrace to the name pizza. Cold cheese to excess, cold toppings, can't tell if the sauce was good or not - hard to find under the cheese. Crust...that must be what was on the bottom...I thought it was the box just soaked with grease from the cheese...

I don't get it and doubt I ever will. Seems to me that if you didn't grow up with Beto's you will hate it. And as I grew up 40 minutes from Wooster St. to the East and 40 minutes to White Plains Ave. in the Bronx to the West, we already know my feelings on this.

For those who've been to Pepe's or any of the "Rays" or eaten a pie in say, Bologna or Naples, think of it this way... let's say the only meat your mom ever cooked was London Broil, well done. And that's your basis for what all meat should taste like. One day you find yourself at Morton's with a medium rare porterhouse in front of you. You take one bite and send it back, chiding the waiter with the notion that, "This is not what meat should taste like!" Cook this until it's tough and bloodless!

I've tried to figure out the charm of Betos. But it escapes me. Cold toppings are cold toppings. The crust is like wet kleenex over thin cardboard. The sauce is sickly sweet. The shredded cheese is not of particulary good quality. But, many Pittsburgh diners seem to love "LOTS OF" and Beto's can certainly deliver LOTS OF cheese, toppings, whatever. As I told my wife, a South Hills native, I've had better slices at Shea Stadium and drive-in movies.

The unapologetic love for places like Beto's is probably why Pittsburgh will never be included in Zagats.

On the plus side, it IS unique and it isn't a chain. So it's got that going for it.

We still miss that great pizza. It is the first meal we get when we arrive and the last meal before we leave to go back home to Michigan. Have talked to the owner and told him his delivery man from Pillsbury stole the dough recipe while he was in the kitchen watching the preparation. And believe me the Pillsbury dough in the cooler of your grocery store is pretty close to it. But, not quite the same. We take the sauce and the cheese home every time. And it was delivered to Memphis, Tn. and was still good, but must have it put in dry-ice. Every new friend and family we have introduced to Beto's loves it too. Beto's Pizza has low overhead in his little shop and if he enlarges it, he may lose a great thing, as so many restaurants do when they go bigger. Anyway why improve on a good thing and a GREAT pizza.

Pros: great pizza and hoagies

Cons: awful hard booths seating, parking

.

After reading all the reviews I was expecting COLD toppings and truly a pretzel-like bottom. Both, I feel, were exaggerations -- much to my pleasure.

The pizza is crunchy/crispy. There is a lot of nice cheese on top. But it's not deathly cold and very easy to eat as I think it becomes room temperate quickly.

I wasn't a fan of the mushrooms as they are canned. The pepperoni was good. I liked the onions on the pizza best. I also added hot sauce since I like my food spicy.

The service was amiable and overall I really enjoyed it! I ate 4 cuts myself. My boyfriend ate 4 as well and got full. We usually don't eat the same amount so that was surprising. But I will definitely be back - though, I won't be fighting crowds for it.

Pros: Value, Food, No Frills

Grew up on this Pizza. Takes some getting used to if you have never had it, but it is great. Other food is really good to.
The booths could use a replacing.

Not many booths, not many seats and it's a shame because the best way to eat the pizza is right out of the oven. However it is good no matter how you eat it. with the cheese and other condiments added after the oven it is a unique pizza for a city that is acned with pizza shops.

It's like no pizza you have ever had, so keep an open mind. The magic is in the combination of textures and temperatures. The crust is pretzel-crisp on the bottom, but only for the first millimeter. The dough above the crispy bottom layer is like pasta, having absorbed the moisture of the tomatoes. Then comes the sauce: it is not thick and spicy, but rather little more than crushed pieces of whole canned tomato. The crust and tomato are scalding hot. A small amount of cheese is sprinkled on while the pizza is cooking, but after the crunchy crust/tomato slab is pulled from the oven, it is doused with an avalanche of excellent cheese in long shreds. The cheese is piled up so high that the top is at room temperature when you get it, as is the pepperoni sprinkled on at the end. It is good pepperoni, spicy and salty.

It is important that you eat this pizza the moment you get it - - even if you have to vacuum your car and de-stain your shirt the next day. The magic of the hot / cold and bland / spicy and crisp / soft paradox is lost if the pizza is reheated.

How do they do it? I can't count the times I have tried to duplicate this pizza at home, without success. It should be easy: there is nothing exotic in the recipe, as far as I can tell. But there is no domestic oven on earth that can duplicate that unique pretzel-like crispness. My next attempt will be to coat the pan heavily with oil and literally fry the pizza on top of the stove for a few minutes before baking it. It won't work, of course, but at four in the morning there is no alternative.

Residents of Pittsburgh, count your blessings. And keep these guys in business!

*Update: Beto's is undergoing remodeling and expanding their not-so-large seating area. The store will at least double in size. They're still OPEN through the construction! Just walk around to the side, following the signs and enjoy!

Next to visiting my family, Beto's is my favorite thing about the Burgh. The mild provolone rather than typical mozzarella and the chunky, savory tomato sauce make this a different sensation than other pizzas. While beginners might be surprised by the cold cheese thrown over the warm pizza, the secret is to get it to go and let it melt on the way home. It's hardly a glamorous place, but that's part of its charm. For more than two or three people, it's probably best to get take out. You have to figure that a pizza restaurant that's survived 50 years without delivery has to be worth checking out.

Pros: Unique taste, Inexpensive

Cons: Small dining room, Way too far from LA!

Unlike most, I can remember when Beto's was in Oakland! I remember walking from the Bloomfield Bridge to 5th and Craig Streets to enjoy a tray. This was a funny oblong tray of 28 cuts of thin, crisp and cheesy pie, which is still the very same today. The price of this tray - we were young so 2 on a tray - was a whopping $2.00, and the pepperoni was "Free". Obviously, I just aged myself, but that same tray is now $28, and the pepperoni is an "option". I now order 6 cuts - ENDS - and have them put pepperoni on 1. I can spread that pepperoni on all 6 and it is adequate. Friends, I have traveled the world and this is "The Very Best" you will ever encounter! However, there is NO need for any additional anything. BRAVO Jimmy!

This Pizza is absolutely the best in the world....
Nothing like it.....
If anyone writes a bad review, ignore, they just have a problem with something else in there life... not this pizza...
No matter where you live make sure you go to Pittsburgh and try this Pizza, you will be back.
I eat it several times when visiting back home and even take some back in a cooler....
They need to ship....

I grew up in Beechview and Beto's was the first pizza I ever had. My parents were Beto's fans and no other pizza came into our house. By the time I was 12 years old my friends and I would cut through the woods for our pizza fix. After I grew up and moved away to Florida I found out that there is nothing else like it anywhere. The sauce has pieces of stewed tomatos, and is slightly sweet. Mounds of cheese, a thin tasty crust, and plenty of whatever topping you order make it second to none.

After reading the reviews, I'm drooling and am trying to think of a way I could get their pizza overnighted to me in Texas - cheese and pepperoni please! I was raised in Pgh and found Betos when my brother was working there well over 30 years ago. Nothing beats the crisp crust, tangy sauce and yes, even the cold cheese! One bite brings the hot and cold together into an amazing taste sensation. I stop in every time I'm back and I too have gone there before going to the relatives. I just hope they never close down!

I grew up in Mckee's Rocks and whenever my dad and I went to see a Penguin game or a Pitt game we'd always stop at Beto's afterward. Truly great memories. As I grew up it was a regular stop, several times a week. Now I live in Atlanta and jones for Beto's constantly. I can literally taste it if I think about it hard enough. Damn! Whenever I get back to the 'burgh it is absolutely my first stop, even before family, sorry. Five cuts plain. Uhh, I'm getting hungry! There is no pizza as good and unique as this.

Pros: incredible pizza, no frills, no chain, value

Prior to moving from Collier Twp. Beto's was the only place to go. Yes, it's different, you get a half inch depth of pepperoni, mushrooms or anything else you order covering each square. One slice can be a meal. Yes, the toppings are added after the baking. I have lived in 12 cities around the country and it is still my favorite. When ever I return to the South Hills it's a must stop for me and my family. Fantastic value, fantastic pizza, Oh to have it here in South Florida. I am flying up within two months and it will be my first stop from the airport.
