Bistro Romano, a historic Philadelphia restaurant with private dining rooms and a mystery dinner theatre is situated in an 18th-century granary in the heart of historic Society Hill. Bistro Romano has been delivering quality service, culinary excellence and value since 1988. Renown for their Regional Italian Cuisine, Bistro Romano has been selected as a "Best of Philly" restaurant. Bistro Romano received the "Wine Spectator Award of Excellence." for 2005, 2006 & 2007. The wine cellar has over 350 selections from around the world. The unique wine cellar, located under the street and part of the former network of underground tunnels in Society Hill, is the place for that romantic dinner.

In Short
Housed in an 18th century granary, Bistro Romano is a dramatic dining experience. The entrance opens to a bar with a copper wall fixture rescued from an old steamer ship. The downstairs dining room is striking: Exposed-brick walls from a one-time tunnel network under Society Hill are now filled with candlelight and wooden booths. Typical seafood fare favorites include mussels and clams that are served with slices of sweet Italian sausage in tomato broth.

I went to the Dinner Theatre with my church group, a bunch of women. We saw the murder mystery dinner theater. We were seated immediately by wonderful and gracious hosts. I attended with a broken ankle, and the waitstaff even thought to offer me an extra chair to prop my ankle up. The baked alaksan salmon was to die for wonderfully complimented by the seasoned vegetables. The actors singing voices left something to be desired, however, I feel that was all part of their act. I sincerely enjoyed myself, due to the waitstaff/actor, the cozy ambience and delicious food. I would reccommend taking a date, your mother, a bachelorette party, or any occasion to the Bistro Romano.

Pros: Waitstaff, Inexpensive, Ambience

From the time you enter until you're ready to leave, Bistro's management & staff do their best to make your meal memorable.

Even during peak dinner time, each course is well prepared and served at the right pace.

Specials of the day are inventive and offer great value. And, their attention to detail during our visit and their follow-up between visits, makes you feel appreciated.

Pros: Superb cuisine, excellent service, fine wines @fair cost

Cons: bar area >crowded

Ratings_icons Dealers Choice...The Best!

nettiegino

This is the only restaurant in Philly that I will have dinner. I've tried other Italian restaurants but Bistro is by far the Dealers Choice. Teh food is out of this world, the service is outstanding. I was got engaged this past December in the private wine room.
There were rose pedals covering the table, the setting was candle lit and the waitress was a doll. The owner and staff are very complimentary, on the house dessert and you are treated like a celebrity or royalty. I live a few doors down from a high class restaurant in Queen Village and the service and food doesn't compare to Romano's.
Sign up for the VIP list, I get certificates and dinner offers through my email all the time. What else can I say, it's my all time favorite restaurant! Cheers!

Pros: Candlelit, Romantic, Authentic

Cons: None, None, None

My wife and I dined at Bistro Romano last night. The food is was excellent. I really enjoyed the Caesar Salad which is made right at the table. The Lobster Ravioli was the best and Cannoli better than any I tasted in South Philly. Service was outstanding, very professional and attentive. I would highly recommend. It's located in a very nice historic building. Extensive wine list with nice Italian and California selections.

Pros: Great Food, Service, Location

Ratings_icons Top Italian Place

I have been in Bistro Romano three times since I move to Philadelphia back in July. The first time I selected due a review in this web site, it was to celebrate my wife birthday and our first day in the city, and I did the best choice. First, the restaurant owner confirmed by email my reservation, and place a red flower and wine on the table as I requested when our arrival to the restaurant. Scene cannot be more romantic, food amazing, and excellent service. Good wine list and the best Cesar Salad I ever tried (a waiter did it in our table). I took my parents when they came from Puerto Rico, and they love it. The third time we went to see the Murder Theater upstairs, and was hilarious. A must visit place in Philly.

Pros: Scene, Food, Service

Ratings_icons The Perfect Romantic Dinner

dave_sch

My wife and I went for the first time Saturday. I must say we were very impressed, food was outstanding, service very attentive, ambience extremely romantic. We reserved the wine cellar which is a private room for two in the actual wine cellar, it's illuminated by candles and the table covered with rose pedals, perfect for our romantic evening. We ordered the Caesar Salad, which was prepared at the table, the best I've tasted, my wife had the Filet Mignon stuffed with spinach, portobello mushroom and provolone and I had the Lobster Ravioli, both were perfect. The filet was very tender cooked to perfection and served with a delicate red wine sauce. I enjoyed the lobster ravioli in which you could really taste the lobster; it had an outstanding sherry sauce. For desert we shared the cannoli, it was fabulous. Request the wine cellar for an excellent romantic dinner.

Pros: Great Food, Romantic Ambience, Caesar Salad

Ratings_icons A very good restaurant

bertanaygun

We loved the restaurant, food was perfect, service was good but it could have been better. The atmosphere was pretty romantic...The only downside was the desserts, which don't have the same quality as the meal.

Expect to pay 50-55$ per person. (including a glass of wine and desserts)

Ratings_icons It was great

I booked the wine cellar about a month in advance. Didn't know until I got there that the wine cellar has one table - very romantic. Excellent food - we had the calamari fritta, caesar salad for two prepared tableside by a very friendly staffmember, and as an entree I had Shrimp and Scallop Venezia (sp?) and my wife had Chicken Parmigiana, not on the menu. All were very good - my shrimp were huge and very fresh. No room left for dessert - too full to eat anything else. Service was outstanding, we were seated 15 minutes before our 7pm reservation. Definitely recommend and we will be going back again.

Pros: Big portions, Caesar Salad tablside, Very Romantic

Cons: Bar is a bit smoky

Ratings_icons Special Evening

kia1182

I recently ate at Bistro Romano and had the most wonderful evening I can remember. My boyfriend and I went to celebrate our two year anniversary and to my surprise he proposed to me. I could not have been happier. The restaurant was wonderful to us and at the end of the evening presented us with complimentary glasses of Champagne. My boyfriend told me afterwards that he had been e-mailing back and forth with Bistro Romano and they were great in accommodating his requests. The food and service was also wonderful and made my special night even more enjoyable. I recommend Bistro Romano because they are very accommodating to special requests and important events.

My family and I dined at Bistro Romano for New Year's Eve this year, and we had a great time. They easily accomodated our reservation for a large party. The food and the service were excellent, especially the table-side Ceasar salad. We would definitely recommend Bistro Romano, especially for special occasions.

We had a wonderful experience at Bistro Romano. The service was excellent and the staff was very accomodating. We had reserved the wine cellar, and the atmosphere was very romantic. Our waiter recommended the perfect wine with our dinner, and the manager even sent over lemoncellos after dinner for our anniversary. I would highly recommend Bistro Romano, especially for a romantic evening.

Pros: Great Desserts
