I am a BIG Steven Starr fan. But Tangerine is probably my least favorite. Atmosphere is nice. Just wasn't overly crazy on my dinner. I sampled during restaurant week, which may explain my dissatisfaction

We went here recently and the food was cooked on the outside, but not on the inside. The service was decent, the prices weren't too bad for a fine dining restaurant in the city, however, when both our meals were severely undercooked, it stopped me from being able to recommend this restaurant to anyone.

I came here with my boyfriend and we were both blown away!! We were seated promptly, and the waitstaff/hostesses were very friendly. I am completely shocked by how many poor reviews there are for the food. I thought the meal was incredible. I highly recommend the steak or the salmon. The ambience is very romantic- not really a "family" restaurant. I can't wait to go back here!!

The minute I walked in I knew it was a mistake. I have a thing against theme restaurants. And this one was as bad as walking into the one beside Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland. It's like one of those designers from "Trading Spaces" was given a blank check and told to give the place a Moroccan feel. They're hoping you'll be so awed by the dramatics of the decor you won't mind the mediocre food.

Half of what you pay will go towards candles...probably about 1000 in the place.

Started out with the mixed appetizer plate...that came with COLD pita bread.! From the fridge COLD! Couldn't someone from the kitchen have thrown it on a grill for like 40 seconds? And the rest of the app? BLAND. Unlike any North African I've ever had. And swimming in olive oil. Like food they serve tourists.

Really disappointing. Can't recommend it. Unless you're in high school and you want your date to think you're cool. Just hope she doesn't know food.

Pros: Restaurant as theater.

Cons: There's better theater and better restaurants.

The Decor is breathtaking with candles everywhere. You feel like if you are in an exotic oasis. The service was excellent. A guy from Spain guided us through the whole meal. He recommended a great wine that matched perfectly our entrees, his recommendations were fantastic. I ordered the whole fish, my wife the duck and we loved. We felt like if we were traveling or something. For sure we will come back again

Tangerine is a beautiful restaurant with great atmosphere. The food and service were both excellent. The wine list was varied, but over priced for the selections. It's a great place for a special occasion or romantic night.

We had reservations for 2 for a Saturday nite - (made well in advance as they called me to confirm our attendance), however we still had to wait about 30 minutes to get a table. We sat in the lounge - no waiter came by to take our drink order - however the host came by and we were comped to 2 drinks. We ordered a few appetizers to share and more drinks and realized we were full. My friend told the waiter we decided not to proceed with our 4th order and he indicated "he did not put it in anyway". We were then given the check without any inquiry as to whether we wanted coffee, dessert or anything else. However the tables next to me were given the "full service" treatment by the waiter. My friend and I concluded that since we were not accompanied by a man - we were not to be taken seriously and therefore the table must be cleared asap for patrons (like couples) who might pay more. Our bill was over $100.00 - and the food was good. Would i go back - only if armed with a man.

The decor of this place is out of this world. I was surprised that for a Philadelphia restaurant that has been around for a few years it seems to set the bar for luxurious and dramatic decor. The food was sensational with more than a few appetizers that I would have liked to try. The Kobe sirloin appetizer was so delicious, my wife and I still talked about it the next day. The entrees were just as good, with a variety of dishes from all over Europe including quite a few Middle Eastern inspired dishes. We were just so happy to walk out of this restaurant having had such a nice time with really impeccable service.

Which, for me, is a bad thing. I have been going for drinks for a while because I love the bar scene. I finally decided to get something to eat and neither my companion nor I was particularly fond of the food. They bring the food to you as it is prepared so when my friend's arrive first I didn't think anything of it. But then time went on and on and after another 20 minutes, my APPETIZER finally arrived, cold. And I don't mean "not warm", I mean COLD!!!! The waitress took it back and and it came back warmer, but still not hot. As I hungry as I was by that point, I should have thought the food was the greatest, but sadly it wasn't. And unfortunately, there wasn't much else on the menu I wanted to try. I don't know what the problem is here, but this was definitely a first for me at a Stephen Starr restaurant.

I took my girlfriend here for our anniversary dinner-and everything was fabulous! The ONLY thing I had a problem with were the table and chairs-very low to the ground and kind of uncomfortable-but I can appreciate the fact that they are trying to create an ambience-but my back didn't appreciate the chairs!
Nonetheless, service was prompt, drinks were innovative and delicious. We shared a salad (which was the best I'd ever had) and then both had entrees-I can't say enough about this meal. I will go back whenever I can.

Cons: Uncomfortable seating

Even if you're strapped for cash and don't want to splurge for dinner here, the lounge area is a great place to hang out for the evening and order some drinks and desserts. The servers are quite attentive for a bar area, so you're never left searching for service. Great date spot

Small portions for big prices, with an overblown affinity for pearl onions. The overly trained waitstaff could have been wearing promotional buttons for the amount of flair we were forced to endure. It was clear that the food was cooked rather preapred by chefs, poor presentation, bland flavors with nothing spectacular to mention. The only redeeming thing was the triple creme cheese, which was not made in house, and the $20 corking fee to avoid the astronomical wine prices. Stay in the bar and you won't have much to disappoint you.

The atmosphere here is really great. The "candle wall" and dim lighting is excellent to set the mood couples or a great place to go to end the hangover (no bright lights). The salmon was excellent the night I was there and I would deinitely go again and again!

I definitely love the bar scene - very trendy.
I tried the restaurant and unfortunately did not have the same opinion as to their bar. The food was alright but I definitely expected more from a Starr restaurant. Again, there's nothing wrong with it, it's just not a wow for me.

I got the whole fish. It was OK at best, and certainly not worth any $30. My dining companion got some other stuff, none of which was all that special or worth the cost, or, apparently, memorable. The servers were a kind of condescending and not well-informed. There are much better restaurants in Old City; Cuba Libre and Patou being two.

I have been to tangerine many times for drinks but never for dinner until my boyfriend and I came here early on a Sunday night in May. Since the restaurant was just opening for the evening, the maitre d' asked if we would like to enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail in the lounge. This was an excellent idea as we had a chance to enjoy a drink while sitting in a cozy corner. Notable drink is the Strawberry Blonde which is a made with an italian strawberry liqueur with wild strawberries floating in it. Tangerine is the only restaurant in Pennsylvania which has this liquer so it truly is a Tangerine special. After our cocktails we were seated in the 2nd dining area. We enjoyed excellent service from a well-trained waiter. His food recommendations were right on the money with the halibut being the notable selection. All in all, I would eat here again and will make Tangerine one of our regular dinner locations.

I brought a guest here on a Saturday night, having reserved a table nearly one week in advance. We had eaten dinner elsewhere and just wanted to order drinks and dessert. AFTER we had been seated and had put in an order for drinks, the manager came to our table to tell us that only people who are ordering entrees can sit at the tables, and told us to give up our table!!! He was essentially saying that only customers who were going to spend a lot of money deserved any respect! It was extraordinarily rude and humiliating. (This policy is ridiculous anyway, because for the short amount of time we would have occupied our table, we would have spent plenty of money to make it worthwhile to serve us.) The Philadelphia restaurant scene has so much to offer--don't waste your business on a pretentious, money-hungry place like Tangerine.

The food at Tangerine is not good. Well, it is ok, but with all of the other choices in Phily, there is no need to come here. It is also really expensive. This place is a really good date spot, however, especially if your date doesn't know anything about food. It is a really cool place to hang out, and any girl (or guy) will be really impressed with you for being brought here. Foodies should definitely check out Philly's other offerings before coming here.

This place is highly overpriced and they are incapable of handling a large party. We were told to be there sharply on time or would not be seated, and then were made to wait twenty minutes. It's loud and very impersonal, I would not go here for dinner with someone you actually want to talk to. Service is average, food is average and setting is average. This would all be fine if the price was average. If you are looking to have a good time with people you know, I would skip Tangerine, if you are looking to hook up at the bar and have a reason to skip small talk--its for you, just grab a cheese steak next door before you get in.

A very enjoyable experience for my birthday. Although some tables are close together, we got there early and requested a more private table.

Flavorful mixed greens and dressing make the calimari appetizer a winner.

I ordered the snapper, which was fileted by our server, who was polite and offered helpful menu information. Snapper was excellent, additional spices could have livened up the side rice.

My girfriend ordered a steak special not on the regular menu. It was rarer than she ordered, but I like it that way and we both thought it was "Melt in your mouth" excellent. The sides were very tasty and flavorful.

I eat with the best of them and I thought entrees were big enough to share and both our appitites were more than satisfied, not sure about some of the previous comments.

They topped it off with a birthday dessert requested by my girlfriend.

Tangerine is one of those places that perfectly blends the quality of the food with the "cool" atmosphere. This is a place you WANT to be with friends sipping cosmos. I went with 4 friends and we had a great time. Though it can be noisy and service a tad slow, the pace was perfect for our party.

If you enjoy very good food, beautifully presented in an attractive setting, then this is a place to try. Our shared appetizer of Moroccan barbequed shrimp with onion rings served over a potato-type salad was delicious. The pistachio crusted duck breast with creamy onions and seared foie gras entree, as well as the roasted filet mignon with gorgonzola-shallot potato tart, were delicious. The shared fallen lemon souffle dessert with pistachio brittle was also very good. With 4 drinks, the bill came to $122 before tip. As to the previous reviewer go to a fast food chain if you want to be Super-sized. We had a wonderful meal and certainly did not go home hungry.

Restaurants were invented to go to for eating food, right? Well, not this one. I have to say I was impressed by the decor at Tangerine, and the food was all perfectly prepared and was delicious, but the portions are tiny and very expensive. Someone must be laughing all the way to the bank on this place. I'm not a big enough snob to appreciate Tangerine. I'll have to work on that.

I'll start off with the good. I have dined at Tangerine at least 4 times I have even brought friends in from hip cities to show off one of Philadelphia's finest dining experiences. I also love the Starr empire of restaurants. I've been to them all!!! However, we were informed on Thursday that our Saturday, June 21, 2003 reservation would have to be confirmed with a $400 credit card CHARGE, not hold. It would be removed once our group of 14 arrived and picked from a price fixed menu of $55/65. I know all about leaving a credit card in the event of cancellation, I was prepared. I was also prepared to order my favorite appetizers and entrees. Needless to say we met, we left and we dropped our dollars at ANJOU that night, a pleasant surprise. Starr is headed in Stein's direction if he keeps this up.

The food is wonderful and the atmosphere is tough to beat at this Old City Jewel. The menu offers almost anything someone could want...the Halibut, Whole fish, Duck, and Beef Entrees were perfect. The Wine List was full of great finds...Austrian Riesling, Cali Chards, Rhone Whites and Reds, Great Cabs, and Italian Signatures, all with very reasonable mark-ups. The Staff was great at guiding us through a "Mederterainian Influenced" menu. The dishes were all served so they could be shared and deserts were delicious. I've been to most all of the "Starr" restaurants and I thought this was the best...great food and ambience, but much easier to get a table at then Morimoto or the Budha place.

Pros: Romantic, Great Food, Nice Wine Selection

Cons: Parking in Old City

.

Their web page stated they had moroccan food, middle eastern food, I called to make reservations and asked if they had moroccan food, they said yes. The only thing moroccan or middle eastern was the a vegetable couscous dish that appeared to be on the menu just to satisfy their statement of having moroccan food. When we sat down, we asked the server if they had moroccan food, she said no. Ambiance was nice, seating was to far apart to be romantic. Too dark to read the menu. Decor was almost too pretentious. We left, went to an Afghani restaurant down the street and had a terrific evening.

I enjoy going here because the atmosphere is really cool and it is a terrific place to bring friends and lounge around. The food is good, but I would say that given the portion sizes, it is too expensive and they would do better if they gave people a bit more food.

Pros: Great Atmosphere, Good Service, Great Desserts

Cons: Too Pricey, Beef Dishes are Poor, Portions too small

Tangerine started out so good but now....too bad!!! The last two times I went there (I will not go again) the food went from interestingly delightful to almost non-existent (the portions were miniscule) and ho-hum. Not acceptable for their high prices. The atmosphere is still lovely but I go to a restaurant to eat! Drinks were ok - high priced but somewhat interesting.

Bar area is cool and great to just hang around, food was great, service was excellent, would suggest making a reservation if you want to go at the weekend, this place was recommended by a friend and I agree with his choice - Definately worth going to - if not just to say you've been
