Smoketown's Care is very unsatisfactory to small animals. They don't really look deeply for a problem they just give them medicine and tell you they are fine. And then days later the animal passes away. It is so upsetting to spend so much money to try and save your love one to get the attitude that small animals are not as important as the bigger ones. My animal had wax in her ear and they didn't check for an ear infection, they just gave her an antibiotic to prevent the ear infection. I followed the directions they gave me to treat her just to later on watch her pass away. I would NOT recommend them to anyone with small or exotic animals!

I went to Dr. Rabuffo at SVH because she was board certified and I thought I was getting the best but she ended up being the worst for my dog Sadie. She performed open surgery on Sadie for OCD (osteochrondritis dissecans) on her left shoulder on Dec. 9, 2008. I thought I was doing what was best for Sadie but after many phone calls, because Sadie wasn't getting any better that weren't returned, I started doing research on the internet. I found that Sadie had others options that Dr. Rabuffo never disclosed to me. OCD surgery should be performed by arthroscopic surgery, you see when they do it by open surgery they miss whatever they can't see from where they go in, which is what happened in Sadie's case, not to mention that Dr. Rabuffo's incision was up higher than where the actual problem was. (I've even heard that in some cases done by open surgery they will actually dislocate the shoulder in order to find the problem area). So Sadie had a surgery that did absolutely nothing to address the problem and caused Sadie even more pain because her shoulder become severely inflamed, plus it was like throwing over $2,000 away... In addition when I asked Dr. Rabuffo why she hadn't told me about the arthroscopic surgery she lied and said she had. Sadie had arthroscopic surgery on Feb. 18 by Dr. Canapp at VOSM in Maryland (a very compassionate vet, whom I highly recommend) on both shoulders... That is another reason that I would have chosen arthroscopic surgery over open surgery had I known about it in the beginning... you see with open they can only do one leg at a time and if they get lucky and it happens to be done correctly, six weeks later they do the other shoulder at a cost of anywhere from $2300 to $2,900 for each shoulder, there's a 2" to 3" incision and a lot of discomfort to your pet and they're wrapped up like a mummy. With arthroscopic surgery they do both shoulders at once if needed, there is two tiny holes (1 stitch each) a small band-aid , much less discomfort, normal stride usually returns in less than two weeks, although total recovery in both cases in up to 12 weeks and the cost for both was $3,500, so you see if Dr. Rabuffo had told me about arthroscopic surgery as she said she had and given the facts, I definitely would have chosen it and not the open surgery that she performed... I'm pretty sure given the facts anyone would choose arthroscopic over open surgery. Oh and in addition Dr. Rabuffo was not very professional... when I asked her why she hadn't told me about arthroscopic surgery and she said she had, I said Dr. Rabuffo you did not and she said I was being rude and that she was done here and walked out of the exam room!!!!
So needless to say I have nothing good to say about Dr. Rabuffo and would not recommend her not just because of what happened with Sadie, although that is reason enough, but also because she is not a professional nor does she process compassion, at least that was the case with Sadie and I. I wrote this in an effort to spare any other animal from enduring what Sadie went through... In closing I just want to add that if you are considering surgery, do the research to find out if arthroscopic surgery is an option in your pets situation and do yourself a favor and go to Veterinary Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Group, I am so impressed by them I'm even including their telephone numbers (410) 418-8446 or (301) 560-1397

Having just moved here from out of state with three cats and two dogs, we were completely lost in terms of where to go for veterinary care. Smoketown V.H. was highly recommended by work colleagues. We couldn't have been more pleased with the service and care our pets received there. We were also pleasantly surprised to find out that they had late hours, which made our appointment very easy to make without rushing around or rearranging our schedules. I would strongly recommend this clinic to anyone! (By the way, their prices are very appropriate and consistent with what we are used to paying in other states).

I had just recently within the past several weeks taken a sick guinea pig to Smoketown Vet Hospital. I was and am very pleased with the compassion and kindness shown by all the staff. We personally worked with Dr. Hall and because I live quite a distance away and my work schedule he was more than willing to stay after his scheduled hours to see us. I can tell you that I have been to many different vet hospitals trying to find the one that treated me in a way the I feel is professional and to find a vet who has extensive knowledge working with exotics. I found their prices to be very reasonable.
Thank you all at Smoketown Vet Hospital

Smoketown has good service, but it also has some of the highest prices around. I have been going there for the past 15 years with my pets and have recently checked around and verified they are one of the highest priced in the Lancaster area. I had an incident with my cat with a virus and it was over $600. Every time I go with either my dog or cat it is well over $100 - even if it is just for a rabies shot. They are a full-service office with a lot to offer and the vets are friendly, but I'm switching to another vet after I did my research. In my opinion, the prices are excessive.

This vet seems to have the best prices around. They were able to get our dog in asap when he was run over by a truck and were very helpful, etc.
Very clean office. Large waiting room. They are open good hours. Very friendly.
They always send a post card as a reminder when our dog is due for his shots so that's very helpfull.
PROS: seem to have the best prices
CONS: none
