Stein Deli used to be great. I guess the bad economy hits everyone. Their bread is usually quite good. However the deli has been slipping the last few years. This deli does not sell hoggies, but has a restaurant next door for sandwiches, etc. I wanted to buy the tuna salad in the display case (on ice) but when I ordered a pound, they bent over and pulled up a white 5 Gal. bucket off the floor to fill my order. It was warm (yech!) heated by the exhaust of the deli case AC? When I asked how much for a half pound of turkey, the guy said, "just get a pound." Their advertised prices are only for pound quantities and many items cost more if you buy less. When I asked for shrimp salad, the guy pulled it out, smelled it, and just said, "you don't want this." I guess I should be grateful. I bought a whole roasted chicken (cold) that was cheap but not edible! Looked like something one forgot in the fridge for a month --totally mummified. Maybe it was a clearance special? Beware of their mark-downs! I used to like their meat lasagna but recently found it too greasy; as if using cheap ground beef. The cooked meatballs are a bit hard, but ok, but they do contain HUGE chunks of garlic cloves. Their macaroni salad used to be very good, then they switched to horrible "institutional" mayo; and most recently are adding vinegar (to preserve it?) that totally ruins it for me. I do like their chopped chicken livers and hope they don't downgrade that one. I use to spend about $75/week at Stein's but now I hardly can find $20 of food I like. The deli at Acme has better salads, greater selection, and happy employees.

My most recent visit to Famous Deli on Tuesday 5/19 was wonderful!! As busy as it was, the deli staff was attentive and offered samples of Corned Beef to see if it was to my liking. The bakery girl was very helpful as well, I wasn't sure what kind of homintash I wanted and she let me sample 1 of each, I purchased a full pound of assorted, they were all so yummy! The cashier who checked me out was very friendly she "thanked me" and "asked me to come again" and I'll be visiting this deli on a weekly basis as I have for years. Stein's Famous Deli is a place you must visit in NE Philly!!!

Today I was at Steve Steins Famous shopping for my mothers day order and I purchased 1/2 lb of Nova, 1lb of white fish salad and quite a few more items. The deli-men were more than courteous offering me a taste when I wasn't sure if I wanted to buy the corned beef which happened to be still freshly cooked when I got it. As for are they a good deal...try going out of the city and paying those outrageous prices...they are the best deal around in fact the people next to me in line had driven over from South Jersey to get there order...it's gotta tell you something about this old fashioned family deli business. I would definitely recommend Famous Deli.As for the tips I would give other customers...The establishment is a staple to the community and has been here since I was a little kid growing up on Tyson and Bustleton...enjoy and take advantage of every item they offer...they are the last of the great deli's around.Mike Gold

If you like deli servers that don't wear gloves or hats, this is the place. In addition to being unsanitary, the servers are extremely discourteous and rude. While I was being waited on, I could hear them grumble under their breath- 'whatever', 'I want to go home', 'what a pain', etc, YES, about me while I was standing there. The eye roll because I asked for 1/2lb was great, then told me they only cut in full lbs... WILL NEVER RETURN. It is too bad because they have some things I really enjoy and would buy on a weekly basis because in this economy, I will not give my $$$ to such poor customer service.

Famous deli is one of those place where you're made to feel like one of the family, Steve Stein is one of those people who makes you feel like he's your best friend. my mos recent visit to the restaurant on July 9th was beyond my expectations. The restaurant, now known as "Reservations", menu is incredible! A must try are the flat breads. The hostess Tina has been there forever, she is a doll, my food server Ann Marie also an original employee, is an exceptional server, she made me feel like our table was the only one ever though she had many to tend to. In short, visit "Reservations" you'll enjoy the new menu.

Famous Deli is pretty much of an institution in the Philadelphia area, I just cannot figure out why. While they do have a nice selection of deli meats and often some reasonably priced produce, my biggest problem with Famous is their overall lack of cleanliness. For example, they have a decent size bakery department, but only a small portion of their merchandise is in a covered glass case. Much of their bakery items sit atop of the glass cases where they get swarmed by flies. During the Passover holiday they offer loads of kosher candy and cookies. The build a display which runs through the middle of the store. While it is certainly a nice display, again everything is uncovered. I find this to be extremely unsanitary and for this reason would certainly not purchase any of this uncovered merchandise and have to give Famous Deli an overall poor rating.

PROS: nice selection of deli meats
CONS: overall lack of cleanliness
