I have taken two classes through Mt. Airy Learning Tree- one on financial planning and one on digital photography. I found the instructors to be knowledgeable and open to answering any and all questions, regardless of the participants level of competence in the area. The most popular classes do fill up quickly. The only negative experience I have had was not being able to find the location of one of my classes, which was located in an apartment complex. The participants in the classes that I have taken have been a diverse and friendly group of people.

MALT is a Mt. Airy landmark. They offer hundreds of classes on everything from art, writing & acting to financial planning, shiatsu, & anger management. Prices are low, & the teachers, many of whom volunteer, really seem to enjoy teaching. Classes are held all over the neighborhood, at community centers, schools, churches, studios, even instructors' houses. Your neighbor may be teaching a class, the whole point of the operation is community service. MALT thrives on quirky ideas & suggestions, so if you happen to offer one, don't be surprised if they ask you to teach a class. The informality of this place is one of its charms, & explains why they're still in business when most others of its kind have folded.
PROS: informal atmosphere, quirky classes, community vibe
CONS: if you don't sign up early, the class may be cancelled
