Several concerned horse owners called to report an extreme case of a highly contagious horse disease known as "strangles" in a barn in Tyler State Park. The response was from a snooty woman, who told me that "strangles is not cruelty, and the barn owner is seeking medical attention for the horses". The disease may not be cruelty, but the barn owner allowing these sick horses to come into daily contact with other healthy horses is. Strangles causes a horse to drop weight dramatically, form severe cold-like symptoms, and form huge puss filled sacs that open and cause severe open-wound pain around the horses chin and throat. It is an ugly and painful disease. IF the woman I spoke to REALLY WENT TO THIS BARN to ensure that the barn owner was seeking medical attention, she would have seen sick, underweight horses not being cared for properly AND STILL being used for public trail rides. There is a mare there, around the age of 20 years old, that looks days from death and is STILL being used on the trail line. I do not understand why the BCSPCA does not do THOROUGH investigations when it comes to horse barns, this one in particular. I understand it is difficult for them to seize a large amount of horses, however, they really should start doing more thorough investigations. If they did, they would find that the only horses who are healthy and at a healthy weight at this particular barn, are those whose owners come every day to feed their horses themselves. In conclusion, the BCSPCA is doing nothing to ensure healthy horses at Tyler State Park and could do more to prevent horses from being neglected.
