The Scene
A small cafeteria-style restaurant in the largest local health food store. Well-to-do suburbanites eat elbow-to-elbow with studded and pierced college students, all enjoying the vegetarian and vegan food. There is also a small outdoor eating area.

The Menu
There are excellent hearty soups here, as well as a diverse salad bar. All foods are organic, and many are vegan. There are cold salads, as well as hot dishes that change on a daily basis. While the soups are a must in winter, the salad bar is most popular during the warmer months. There is also a range of baked goods, easily washed down with their strong, organic coffees.

If You Order One Thing
Make a selection the black bean vegetarian chili. It's a filling, wholesome meal, and it keeps the body going all day.

The Inside Scoop

  1. Hints - There is ample parking on the far side of the building. In colder weather, there are hearty and filling casserole-style dishes.
  2. Chow Down - Hearty soups and veggie meals does a body and soul good.
  3. In Addition - The café is part of a larger co-op, so you can stock up on organic and hard-to-find items.

Everywhere I've lived, I've always tried to find the local coop and volunteer there. The EEFC is a great place to shop for organic produce, natural grocery. They also have the best bulk foods and spices in the city. For some reason. Im not a big fan of the prepered food except the vegan baked goods.

The coop only sells organic produce which might explain the slightly higher prices than whole foods that somebody pointed out. Whole foods may have a nice looking array of fruits and veggies, but they are not all organic and some would argue that whole foods is more expensive than Giant eagle.

Support you local coop!

Ratings_icons Good store, but doesn't always live up to the hype.

I love the idea of a food co-op, and the staff are great, and if you're looking for organic food there's certainly a lot to choose from, but I was a little disappointed when I got there based on all the wonderful things I'd heard. They do have an excellent selection of bulk foods at really great prices (I make bran muffins by the ton and it's the cheapest place I've ever found to buy wheat bran, as well as a lot of other grains), their nut butters are really excellent, and they do have a certain amount of fairly obscure foods you can't get most places. And I'd much rather give my money to a co-op than most other stores. However, their produce is overpriced, and the majority of the stuff they sell you can also get at Whole Foods, which is just a few minutes away and has a MUCH wider selection. If you've never been, definitely check it out because you're bound to find stuff there that you can't get elsewhere and will find yourself making regular trips for it in the future - but unless you're in the area, it probably won't become your one-stop grocery store.

Ratings_icons If you buy Organic...

You will love this place. They specialize in organic and natural foods. It looks the same as the inside of any of the large chain grocery stores, way larger than most health food chains. This may be a bit hard to find but if you can find the factory in breezewood it is inside of there just with a seperate door on the side. I have never eaten inside the cafe but everyone I know raves about it.

Ratings_icons GREAT PLACE for all your ORGANIC FOOD needs

Eleanore D. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 538

I love this store. They have just about everything you could think of in there organic. Most of the time organic items are priced so expensive that you can't afford to get them, but this place has some really good prices. It is set up like a regular grocery store... has every grocery item you can think of but all their food is organic. The prices are not bad either. I would highly recommend this establishment to anyone who wants or uses organic products. This is definitely the place to go.

I've been going to this health food store for 20 years and have seen it grow to something really special. The selection is great and the sit down cafe is really lovely.

The co-op is one of the best places to go for groceries--especially if you tend to buy organic, natural foods. The produce is always fresh, and there are usually items from local farms. The bulk food section is especiallly good. If you get hungry while shopping, stop over at the cafe, where they specialize in tasty vegetarian food. The co-op also works to be a part of the community, frequently organizing events as well as having its own credit union. Given the typically high price of groceries in the Pittsburgh area, one doesn't have to spend more to eat well!
