I tried to use a Groupon this evening and was rudely turned away. We're new to Pittsburgh, so we've bought a few Groupons as a low-risk way to try new places. So far we've had great experiences at Square Cafe, Blue Water Tavern, and Double-Wide Grill, to name a few. But never have I run into a more pretentious and rude proprietor as the one I met this evening. The Groupon clearly states that reservations are required on the weekends. Being a Thursday night, I didn't think it would be a problem. I was met at the door and asked for a table for 5. The owner asked if I had reservations and I said no. He said they were completely booked that evening, though I counted 5 (!) empty tables. I've worked in the restaurant industry in both the front and back of the house. 5 empty tables does not constitute a booked evening when your entire restaurant has maybe 15 tables total. I kindly explained that I had a Groupon to use and could I please make reservations for later that weekend. He said rather curtly, "No. We're booked. Everyone and their mother is trying to use their Groupon." I was stunned. I said, "Um, then how will I get my $20 back?" He said we could come back after Monday and get $20 worth of food, but he would not honor the value of the Groupon purchased in the deal. He then went on to lecture me that I had 6 months to redeem it and it wasn't his problem that they're booked up now. We just had a baby 8 months ago and yes, I had poor judgment thinking we would get out a little more than we actually did. Shame on me. However, I don't appreciate being lectured. At that point I was insulted and angry and asked for my $20 back now. He refused and I said, "Fine. You can keep your $20. You'll not receive another penny from me and we'll not ever be dining here." We then walked out the door and down the street to Sweet Water Grill and enjoyed a lovely meal there. My opinion of Sewickley Cafe: stuffy and pretentious.

I would like to tell you about the worse treatment I have ever experienced in a restaurant at The Sewickley Caf. It was our 27th Wedding Anniversary and we thought we would go to a place we have dined at in the past and usually have had a wonderful experience. We have always brought our out of town guests to share the wonderful dining experience. However, on this night, it wasn??t such a wonderful dining experience. Upon entering the restaurant, we were asked if we had a reservation. We said we didn??t. We looked around the restaurant and saw maybe 6 open tables inside the restaurant. We asked if we could sit outside at which the owner said it was full and he should have a table out side in about 20 minutes. We said we would wait. We had an alcoholic beverage at the bar while waiting. Ten minutes into our wait, the owner commanded that we were going to be transferred to a table inside and Joe would be our waiter. He pointed authoritatively to the table. I asked, ??What about the outside table?? The owner responded, ??I tried, it is not going to work out tonight.? We went to our appointed table, as commanded. Then we watched and heard as other parties entered and stated they did not have a reservation and they would like to dine outside. They were taken to the outside dining area immediately. We sat there, stunned. Why were we not allowed to partake in the outside dining area? We did have a delicious dinner, and our waiter was very gracious. When we finished our dinner, we asked to speak to the owner for some kind of enlightenment. Expecting a gracious explanation, the owner said, ??O.K.? and stepped away from us, as if to say he was done with us. We asked if he even cared about how unwelcome he made us feel, and he responded with, ??O.K. , Have a good night.?, and pointed toward the door. He left us standing there with our mouths wide open, stunned at his response. We don??t understand how an owner of a restaurant in this distinctive town could be so rude. We will never dine at this establishment again and we will make sure all of our friends and coworkers know of our rude treatment. With this kind of treatment, this establishment will sure to be closed soon. Upon arriving home, out of curiosity, we googled The Sewickley Caf reviews and we astonished to find we were not alone in our sentiments!!!!!!Reader Beware!!!! DO NOT DINE AT THE SEWICLEY CAF?.

Its only satisfactory. Sandwiches and fries are good. If you are from Sewickley the menu gets boring. There are several better restaurants in Sewickley. Try them all and judge for yourself. If you are on a Sewickley Penguin hunt be sure to stop there. If you want good service and wait staff that pays attention ... go somewhere else.

There always seem to be great menu options for dining in. I really enjoy the sandwiches and all of the ingredients taste fresh. One of my favorite options on a busy night are the Cafe Casseroles. A gourmet meal for a great price ready to pick up and enjoy. I just found out that for every Casserole ordered, $1 is donated to the Quaker Valley School system for the use of the fern hollow nature center. It is great to support a business which is giving back to our local community!

As I occasionly check out the restaurant reviews in the Citysearch, i was quite alarmed & SADDENED by some of the negative reviews about the SEWICKLEY CAFE.
My wife and I frequent the Cafe ( one or twice a month) in this charming little town, and won't even think twice of where to eat ( all though there are many choices). My wife may dispute me on this but as I find the breakfasts (they Olympus omelette, made with feta & fresh spinach & tomatoes) are my favorite. My wife loves the the lunch menu, especially the truffle fries that accompany all the sandwiches. What I especially love about the Cafe is their "take out" casseroles, that my wife will bring home when she is pressed for time. They are NOT your typical baked pastas! (Your guests would think you've been cooking for hours!)
The authors of these negative reviews obvioiusly do not know the owner of the Cafe...do they know about the numerous fundraisers he is involved with? The generous time and donations he is active with in his town. It doesn't matter where he comes from originally but the fact is he came to Sewickley and for this my wife and I are greatful that he brought with him the Sewickley Cafe.
p.s. don't forget the killer desserts

We have lived in Sewickley for 17 years and have been enjoying the Sewickley Cafe' for the past 10. We have always had great food and great service.

The lunches are a great value; we often order for lunch where I work. The truffle fries are unique and really tasty, as is the Lyn's Wrap. I recommend those for something different for lunch.

Dinner is amazing. The standard menu items are always consistently good (something to look for in a restaurant) and the specials are always creative and well done. We particularly like the Crab Cakes, but the Tuscan Chicken, Asiago Chicken, and Penne a la Cafe are also good. The bone-in t-bone is awesome!!!!!

Oh, and did I mention the Tomato Dill soup? You have to try it, even if you don't like dill!

The addition of the bar is nice, but you can still bring your own wine with a nominal stem charge.

While we have noticed a turn-over in staff, they are always well trained and very pleasant. They know their product and are always willing to make it right if there is a problem (rarely!!)

While it is sometimes a dissappointment not to sit on the patio (which is lovely), just because I can't sit out there doesn't ruin my evening. I don't consider the dining room to be "dark and dingy" . There is always good (or at least interesting!) art on the walls and fresh flowers on each table.

As for the owner of the restaurant, I have not encountered the type of behavior mentioned in the one star reviews. He has always been accomodating to us and has been more than generous with his time and talents to local and regional causes. And by the way, he isn't from New York, he is from Kentucky ... check your facts before you blast someone!

Not sure why those one stars are so angry ... they may not have been at the same restaurant we frequent!

We recently had out of town guests in for Easter weekend. As you may recall, the weather on April 2, 2010 was beautiful and I thought it would be nice to sit outside and enjoy the weather, along with a nice lunch. Our first choice was the Sewickley Cafe. When we asked to be seated outside, we were told that the patio was not opened, so we had to sit inside. Since it was such a fabulous day, we decided that we really wanted to be outdoors. We told this to the owner and his response was "whatever" and then he said, "don't ever come back here"!!! I cannot begin to express how shocked and embarrased I was by this unprofessional, rude behaviour, especially when I was the one who suggested this restaurant. Quite frankly, I was so dismayed that I couldn't even think of a quick response. My sister-in-law did say to him, "are you really that rude?", to which he replied, "I said goodbye and don't ever come back here"!!!!

Well, no need to worry about that. I would never go back there and I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone. In the end, though, we had a great lunch at the Naked Grape. I highly recommend the Naked Grape and we will be sure to return there.

On a final note, we mentioned the inexcusable treatment we received at the Sewickley Cafe to another merchant in the area, and she told us that she's had a number of customers complaining about the Sewickley Cafe lately. Those folks did not mention rude behavior, but they complained of bad food and slow service. When this restaurant goes out of business, lots of people will know why.

Today was a beautiful day so we hoped to go to a nice outdoor lunch in the town of Sewickly. Upon our arrival at the Sewickley Cafe, the owner asked us if we were coming for lunch. We asked about dining outside and he told us that the area wasn't available due to damage from the snow. He proceeded to try to seat us in the noisy dark restaurant. We decided that we really wanted to eat somewhere outside so we thanked him and explained this. He gave us a very rude look and exclaimed "Whatever!" and then told us to never come back. We asked if he was really going to be that rude and he said, "Just leave and don't come back!"
Not returning to Sewickley Cafe will not bother us, it will only hurt his pocket. We know this restaurant will soon go out of business because no one that treats people this way knows how to run a successful business. We hear the owner is from New York and all of the locals we told this story to today agreed that he should go back!! Good riddance to a bitter miserable man and his soon to be failure of a restaurant!!

Pros: located in a nice town

Cons: the owner!

This is my favorite place for lunch. The salad with chicken and raspberry dressing and the tomato dill soup are my favorite things to order. The carrot cake is hugh and delicious.

I ordered half-price certificates. It cost $25.00 and I received 2 certificates for $25.00 each. They can only be used for dinner. The prices there are around $25.00 per meal including dessert. The "deal" is you can only use ONE certificate per visit/per table. This means it is NOT one-half off. It will cost two people around $50.00 per visit, therefore, you will have to spend $75.00 total to get the one$25.00 "free" meal. Even if you both buy the certificates you can only use ONE per table/per visit. They should allow both certificates to be used at one time like most other restaurants around their meal price range. This would equal buy one/get one free, or 1/2 off, instead of just RIP OFF.

Pros: Food was good

Cons: Loud and atmosphere not nice

I absolutely love both the atmosphere and food here. There are plenty of meals that will keep you coming back. For lunchtime, order any of the soups or sandwiches and you'll walk away happy. Several of our most popular Pittsburgh Penguins frequent here often.

I worked there two summers in a row, well one full summer then I got fired for calling in sick 2 days in a row (I got a doctors excuse and ended up I had mono) and the first summer wasn't bad. Maybe I'm holding it up to too high standards because of the people I met, and I've never served before. But the service is ify. Boss in a good mood, you'll get good service, but bad mood and look out, it's probably safer to be a matador. Food is a ht or miss too, try the chicken ceaser sandwhich, and also the truffle fries. Both VERY good. The chicken salad, however, is out of a tub and the other sides, besides the fries and soup are NOT fresh.
I suggest go. Make your own opinion.

I've been going to the Cafe for both lunch and dinner for the last few months as I recently moved to Sewickley. I got a recommendation from a stranger when I was in Buggers the one day when I was asking around for a decent spot for some dinner. He said to head to the Cafe as the said that it was one of the only spots in town for a decent meal besides the Sweetwater Grill, which he said was a little pricier. He told me though not to have to high of expectations and that most of the time the restaurant is unorganized and it can take a while to get food.

The first few times I went it was average. The sandwiches looked thrown together, the place was loud, pretty dirty and it had flies flying around most of the tables and in the kitchen. They also had no air conditioning and in late summer it made for a very uncomfortable experience.

My server was not very educated on what they were serving but I can't really blame him since they were out of a few things that I wanted, such as wine. I was however recommended the tomato dill soup by the server as he said it was excellent and it was the owners mothers secret receipt.

I got the soup and it was cold to start. I had him heat it up in the microwave as he was already embarrassed I could tell. Once I tasted the soup warm, there was something not right about it. It tasted like watered down cardboard, with soggy chunks of tomato in it. It had way to much dill in it was not a good consistency. I don't know what was all in it but I could not eat the rest. It is the worst soup ever.

Fast forwarding to the last time I ate there for dinner I am still not impressed with the Sewickley Cafe. Dinner it is way to dark, the menus are stained and gross. The carpet was completely filthy, the bathrooms are horrendous and the kitchen from what I saw is a mess. I don't know how any restaurant owner could be proud of that.

The food is ok, but eating it in a dumpy place is not. I'll stick with the Sweetwater Grill.

Well, I read the other reviews and can understand some of the negatives. The Waitstaff and Chefs do change; some of the waitstaff are younger and perhaps inexperienced. Especially at lunch time, the place does get crowded and food/service gets hectic.

Personally, I have had very good experiences with the place for breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you become a "regular" and are paying by Credit Card, tip the waitstaff 10% and then leave them the extra tip in cash. Tell them that the IRS automatically assumes that they get 10% tips and the "extra" cash tip is net money to them. Regardless of whether they know the IRS Rules or not, they will remember you next time and your service will be prompt (this works in any restaurant). As mentioned in the Post-Gazette a few months ago, the new tip level is moving to 18% so keep that in mind too.

Though the Cafe has a wine list, they still allow you to bring your own bottle in with just a "Stem Charge" of $5 per glass. For a person who brings their own wines in whenever they can, this is a great deal! It also helps to offer a small sample of your wine to the waiter/waitress, the Maitre de and the Owner, if he is there. Again if you do this, they will remember you when you return and your service will be excellent.

Keep all this in mind and give the Sewickley Cafe a try!

I eat out on a very regular basis and am grateful the Sewickley Garden Cafe is so conveinent for my lifestyle. The menu is nice and creative without being "too creative." Sometimes the service is a bit uninspired but not worth avoiding for. The brie with apples is truly wonderful and large enough to share with the table. Their catering is also very capable and worth considering while planning a party etc.

I encourage people to go for lunch & dinner but not breakfast though. The waffle is seemingly not freshly made. The serving of breakfast on the weekdays at least seems like an let's be open while we are prepping for lunch since we are here. The owner isn't present during these hours so maybe the lack of inspiration is because he hasn't seen how the food is coming out.

Overall it is great for groups because of the diverse menu and range of entree prices as well. Enjoy!

When this cafe opened, approximately 12 years(?) ago, it had a few glitches. After a few months, they seemed to work out the kinks and it was a nice place to be:comfortable, nice little meals, a sweet cafe.
Like many restaurants, food quality there goes up & down. Unfortunately, "Down" seems to be its permanent resting place. The last good meal I had there was in about 2001. I still go there now and then- maybe once every year or two, hoping it will be good. But it has not been good for many years. The house soup"tomato dill" tastes like campbell's soup with a few pounds of added sugar and a bit of dried dill. Plus, the general atmosphere has become gross: dirty, smelly, unpleasant.

I've gone to that place far too many times because it's only one of a few restaurants in Sewickley. The atmosphere is charming with lovely outdoor seating ( the only reason it got two stars instead of one) but the food really misses. It's a shame because it wouldn't be that difficult to pull the sort of a menu you would find in a little cafe in the south with homemade goods. My husband and daughter were there recently and my daughter ordered a flank steak med rare. It came back like shoe leather. They sent it back and the chef refused to cook another one and said that's the only way he could cook flank steak. Everyone should know that the only way to EAT flank steak is med rare!
They ended up paying the bill and just leaving. Some things on the menu look like they would taste good but just don't measure up...they just have the wrong idea for this place. I would love to see someone take over and re-do the menu with a new chef. The only thing they have going for them in my opinion is their tomato dill soup. Other than that, please don't waste your time.

MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE CAFE' HAS BEEN A JOURNEY. I WANT TO ADD HAS BEEN A TRUE LEARNING EXPERIENCE . IT WAS THE DIRTYEST RESTURANT I EVER WORKED AT. THE SIDE DISHES THEY SERVE YOU ARE NEVER FRESH. THE COOLERS IN THIS RESTURANT ARE BEYOND NASTY. THIS IS THE ONLY RESTURANT ULL SEE FLYS IN THE WINTER.. THE BATHROOMS UD BE SCARED TO USE THERE BARELY EVER CLEANED AND THE OWNER EXSPECTS HIS WAITSTAFF TO CLEAN CUZ HES SO CHEAP HE DONT WANNA PAY FOR A PROPER CLEANING CREW. THE TABLES ARE TOPPED WITH BROWN BAG PAPER AND CLOTH NAPKINS THAT SEEM TO MAKE THINGS FINE DINING. YET THE TABLE CLOTHES ARE DIRTY AND ONLY GET TURNED MAYBE ONCE A WEEK. WORKING FOR THIS MAN I REALIZED FOR EACH THERE OWN, THERES NO EQUAL AND IF YOUR A MAN U GOTTA PLUS, SOME EMPLOYEES PAY FOR THERE UNIFORM SOME DONT, SOME GET OFF THE HOOK FOR COMING TO WORK SLOPPY N DIRTY, AND I MUST ADD HE DOESNT EVEN PERMIT HIS OWN EMPLOYEES TO PURCHASE A MEAL AFTR A SHIFT. SO OVERALL THE OWNER HAS ISSUES WITH HIS IMAGE MORE THAN THE OVERALL PICTURE OF HIS RESTURANT. AND BEFORE U KNOCK THE SERVER LOOK AT THE BIG BAD WOLF THAT SHE/HE HAS TO ANSWER TO. HE'S KNOWN TO FIRE FOR NO GOOD REASON. AND OVERALL THIS RESTURANT IS A CAFE' THAT HAS HEALTHY FOOD STORED IN UNHEALTHY CONDITIONS IS BEYOND DIRTY, AND FOR THOSE THAT STILL REMAIN WORKING 4 HIM LET IT BE KNOWN UR NOT APPRECIATED FOR ANYTHING YOU DO.

Agree with the other review - it can be a little crowded and noisy inside, but then again, for a converted soccer store, it's pretty good. Try and eat there in the spring / summer and sit outside on the patio for a much nicer experience. The food is wonderful & light, but it is on the pricey side. Good date restaurant or staple for the health conscious. They do have a take-out special for two that is both reasonably priced, ample in quantity and overall delicious.

Although I wasn't very impressed with the atmosphere, I certainly was impressed by my lunch! Fantastic salads and sandwiches (my friend ordered the cheese sandwich which was the biggest I've ever seen). The crab cakes were very good. Prices were reasonable. Call to check but I believe it's a BYOB for dinner.

Arrived Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. Should have known something was up since we were the only 3 customers in the Cafe. After two inquiries and 10 minutes we got cream for our coffee which already was warm and weak. After spotting the cook with his spiffy white uniform on I figured that the Belgium waffle listed on the menu would be great. However, it arrived burnt, crystallized and about 1/4" high. I was ready to say something but my wife gave me "the look" so I kept my mouth shut. We asked for some ketchup and when we're halfway through with our meal the waitress brought out a tiny plastic cup with about a teaspoon of ketchup in it and said that they were getting low on ketchup. I asked if she was kidding (she wasn't), but said she would go back and look for more and eventually brought out 2 tiny cups filled to the brim. (we were almost finished with our meal). Other than the sausages skin falling off (boiled before frying), and a little skimping on the toast (1 slice per meal) my wife and son's meals were fine, eggs, omelet etc.. When the waitress asked how everything was, I looked at my half-eaten waffle and told her it was the worst waffle I had ever been served. She gave no answer and asked if I wanted the check. The check came (fastest thing she did all meal) and sure enough the waffle was still on the check. I paid the bill and even gave her a 20% tip. Reason being that in these cases of poor service I blame the owner for not training his help properly. Also, the cook should never have let the waffle out of the kitchen. We travel all over on the weekends looking for good breakfast stops. Alas, this is one place that we have crossed off our list.

It all started out looking promising. We were seated promptly in the main dining room (they have a patio too). Unfortunately, our waitress didn't show up for about 10 minutes. My patience was waning. I ordered a lemonade and my wife stuck with the water (which tasted like salt water). After another 5 minutes, the waitress came back (without my lemonade) and asked to take our order. I ordered the Black Bean Salsa Wrap with Steak and my wife ordered the Smoked Turkey Sandwich with Brie. My lemonade finally showed up about 5 minutes prior to our lunch, which took approximately 25 minutes to prepare....I'm puzzled as to how that can be. Nonetheless, we dug in. I was disappointed to find that my "Black Bean Salsa" Wrap completely lacked black bean salsa. Instead, the cook must have used some jarred Chi-Chi's salsa, wrought with soggy tomatoes and peppers. Additionally, the shredded cheese most certainly came pre-shredded in a bag. The steak was extremely tough and lacked seasoning. My wife's Smoked Turkey Sandwich with Brie delivered the Brie, complete with rind. The sandwich also was supposed to contain asparagus spears, which it did....2 whole anemic spears on the whole sandwich. Overall, I'd avoid this place like the plague. You can buy the same ingredients at the store and make the dishes at home (maybe cheaper) with signficantly greater flavor. Parking is street only (meters) and the inner dining room does not have A/C, so we sat next to a huge fan. Overall, I was very disappointed with the Sewickley Cafe and cannot begin to understand other reviews about this place, except the one regarding the poor service. Just don't go!

The service was terrible! I was not offered a refill on my drink at all. I was ignored by my waiter and the manager was less than helpful when the waiter ran my Visa with the wrong check!
Over priced for the amount of food given. Small space, I felt like i was sitting on top of the table next to me.

Recently remodeled interior gives the Sewickley Cafe an elegent look with the walls covered with local artwork. the romantic indoor lighting makes it the perfect place for a nice night out with your spouse. The outdoor garden has a classy look and fully furnished with carpet that would make any restaurant proud. The food is worth every penny although expensive. Everything is made fresh when order is placed. No precooking here. I suggest for lunch a Lynn's Wrap and for dinner a strip steak with roasted potatoes and sno peas. Recently added full bar with a wide selection of wines, liqours, and beer. The service is unbeatable which makes your experience twice as good. In my opinion a very upscale restaurant and one that gives Sewickley a good name.
