I only recently tried to cancel from Sweat. Just be aware - they make it IMPOSSIBLE to cancel. Forget about any promotion, etc., they will charge you for at least 2 additional months if you try to cancel and insist that you mail/email/fax a request to cancel to their shady bill collector ABC Financial. It's all in your contract. DO NOT JOIN THIS GYM. I am not from some other gym, and actually have never and will never be a member of another gym. I am normally a runner. Anyway, I was completely amazed that they would pull that. Google "Sweat trouble cancelling membership" and read all the crazy crap this place pulls. Read through ANY contract and make sure you know the cancellation policy. Plus, a lot of the equipment's broken and it smells bad (in Old City), though the staff are nice enough.

ugh man, do not do a trial or sign your name on anything! there is nothing free, you are not a grand prize winner, you can not cancel, you are screwed! god i hate myself for the lies and BS i had to feed to people on a daily basis while working there. we are trained to smile in your face and get your CC number, then lie and jerk you around to keep that card on file as long as humanly possible. there are some good people there and the gym could have potential but things are just a bit to crooked at the top of the food chain. just make sure you ask plenty of questions if you join and ask to see the contract before you sign anything or your day trial will turn into a 2yr contract without your knowledge

It's a nice enough gym but they decided to lease out their lower level and do away with their ab machines. Who ever heard of a gym with no ab machines?

Do not join Sweat under any circumstances. They use a company by the name of ABC Financial to bill their customers for membership fees - Google it and you won't believe the horror stories you will find about them. The stories of people trying to cancel their memberships are unbelievable - and unfortunately I have been dealing with this myself for several weeks now, with no success as of yet in being able to cancel my month to month membership.

Here is a copy of an email I sent to the owner of Sweat; he has not had the courtesy to respond:

Dear Mr. Scott Caplan,

A few days ago, I received in the mail one of your "Scratch & Win" flyers. I have been thinking of rejoining a gym in the area where I live (not far from your center on Arch St. and 15th St., which would be quite convenient). I therefore decided to see whether I had "won" anything. Yes, I was a "Grand Prize Winner!" which, according to the flyer, entitled me to "6 months free, Free personal training, or 10 VIP passes, or all three."

To be certain that this "win" was legitimate, I called your company and left a message. One of your associates (I forget her name) returned my call, and she informed me that as a Grand Prize Winner I was entitled to the items listed on the mailing. I asked if there were any conditions, truly believing that I might indeed be a rare "Grand Prize Winner," and she said "only a joining fee of $149."

Today, I took time to visit your gym at Arch and 15th Streets and was informed that there were further conditions not mentioned on the mailing, namely that I would have to take out a 12- or 18-month contract at $65 or $59 per month, respectively. Neither of these conditions nor, indeed, the joining fee, were printed on your flyer.

I believe your mailing should have listed all these conditions, even in small print, on the mailing. I would imagine that it might be illegal not to do so. If not, it certainly should be! I think your mailing is dishonest and certainly is unethical -- and has wasted my time, as well.

Obviously, you have lost a legitimate customer, and I suspect other "Prize Winners" -- and friends of mine who are already members of your gym at other locations -- will be as angry, or at least as disappointed, as I am when they find out the true value of the "prizes" you have offered.

Sincerely,

I honestly believe that many of the negative reviewers here own/work for the competitors because they are loaded with false information. There is more cardio equipment than is ever used at one time, it is ALWAYS clean, the staff is always helpful and friendly (much of the full-time staff is new this year, so perhaps previous employees were less so when previous reviews were written). Overall, I would reccomend this gym to anybody.

I have been a member at sweat for over 5 yrs in Manayunk. When Mike was the manager the place was a nice place to go, the staff was nice and the gym was clean and never over-crowded. Now the only staff that even says hello is Nick and the rest of the staff are a bunch of arrogant jerks. The guy in the morning is a huge a** and the new guy who looks like he runs the place never even acknowledges you. Like he is too cool for school. I am so fed up with this place that I am looking to leave. At this point just look elsewhere

Old City location:

Avoid mid-morning.... the stench of body odor from one of the regular patrons is just overpowering. It covers the entire gym... and it is a large gym- so you can imagine what it is like if the culprit decides to workout next to you! Puke!

Despite Sweat's 5:00AM opening time, it is a bad gym option for morning gym-goers. Sweat has a policy (yes, I discussed it with the manager) of cleaning the showers and locker rooms between 6 to 7:00AM. The cleaning person is a man, no-less, so the locker rooms are unusable during that time. Sweat is unwilling to even consider moving their cleaning schedule to the late evening hours (such as 10-11:00PM).

I am glad I signed up for the 7-day trial. At least I didn't have to find out how stupid their policy is while paying for it. It's a shame, the gym was otherwise nice.

This place is a SCAM! Staff is nice initially and then becomes rude once they have your $$$. Don't be fooled, these people are not legit. The place is less crowded, and you might think it is worth it. However, when you try to quit, as everyone eventually does, they will rock you with fees out the ying-yang. And you will question if these are the same people who smile at you everyday.

Manayunk location - I totally agree the rude customer service, especially the miserable person who picks up the phone during the early hours! He acts like you're wasting his time and is VERY quick to interrupt you.....not to mention he mumbles through his sentences. I know the exact guy and he should just stick to vaccuuming the floors. I guess I'd be miserable too if that was my career.

There's always room for me on the machines or in classes. They have a lot of good instructors and trainers. I've gotten into the best shape of my life in the shortest amount of time and actually enjoyed it. The place is a little utilitarian but there aren't alot of grunters or groupies. There's also none of the pressure to buy bogus products like in certain chain gyms. The music in the morning is great.

After visiting all the sweat gyms in Philly, I have always wondered why the Manayunk gym has the least amenities? The bikes suck, the classes are out dated, and the TV's dont even off ESPN? You pay nearly $60/month and I feel you dont get your money's worth. I would suggest LA Fitness, even though I have been a member there. All the other Sweat gyms have so much more to offer. No pool, out dated classes, no ESPN, no ESPN? really? Lack of stationary bikes, treadmills, and weight equipment.

For $60/month you get:
- Dirty equipment
- 2 stationary bikes (they have 4 but god for bid you try to use the two bikes that are over 10 years old and hurt your a$$).
- not nearly enough cardio equipmnent
- out dated classes
- and TV's that only carry public channels. God for bid if you want to watch ESPN, you cant. no ESPN? are you serious?
- did I say that there were two stationary bikes?
* If this doesnt convince you to join I dont know what will. Again save your money! Save your money and join somewhere else.

I'm trying my "free week" trial at the new Sweat Gym in King of Prussia, and so far, so good! There are some failings that I think are probably common in a new, just opened gym. It's very quiet, there's not a lot of classes or TV channels on the cardio theater yet, and the juice bar is still a few months from opening, but on the other hand, the people are SO NICE, the gym is sparkling clean, and all of the equipment I've used is brand new and great quality.

I would love to see a second set of shower curtains to make for more private changing areas, and it would be great to have some fans in the cardio area, but so far I think I'll definitely be signing up.

For the girl with the internet problem ... I work for a web company and can tell you that happens often. I would hesitate in judging any company too harshly for occasional web disturbances.

this is not the worst gym ever but for the price of a membership it is ridiculous. i have two major probems with the gym. first, the room where they hold classes is absolutely disgusting--the floor looks like it is never cleaned (and we are often expected to work out barefoot. and none of the equiptment is ever wiped down after use, i have never seen a spray bottle and towels in there (this includes weights, mats, etc.) so everythign smells terrible. im pretty sure this probabaly goes agaist health codes too. Also, while it is very nice that each treadmill, elliptical, etc has a tv on it, it is almost pointless if the only channels they get are whyy and 4 spanish channels. For 60 dollars a month they should all have AT LEAST basic cable. I cant believe im paying this much to go there i wouldnt recommend this gym to anyone, if the location wasnt so convenient for me i would have never signed up.

I go to the Center City location, and I absolutely love it. The staff is friendly, the equipment is clean, and the classes are wonderful. (and the website always works... this morning was the first time i have ever encountered a problem loading the page) I would recommend this gym to anyone who is looking to stay healthy and fit.

I wanted to investigate the facility in KOP, however, I could not even access the www.sweatfitness.com web site!! There is a serious error that causes failure. This is really disappointing and casts doubts on whether this is even worth looking into.

I have to agree with those of you who commented on the rude manager at the Queen Village location, but I found nearly all the other staff members to be friendly and helpful. I like the classes, everyone is very welcoming. The people in the wednesday evening boxing class are a little territorial, but I find the early morning classes to be great. When I was pregnant everyone was very kind and always asked if I needed anything. After the baby, they always asked how he was doing, and I did bring him in a few times and they were very friendly.

I think the price is just fine compared to other gyms, and I've also been to the South Philly location which has all new equipment, great for the money! Finally, I found to be cleaner than PSC, so all around I am happy with Sweat!

I see that there are many complaints about some of the Sweat locations. I have only attended the Center City location for the past two years and love it. I've taken a variety of classes (my favorite is Wednesday night spinning) and have taken advantage of the pool. Please know that not all of the front desk and personal trainers are rude, in fact, at center city, they are all quite helpful.

I just joined in the last week and I love it.

Upon entering Center City location, I was greeted by a very pleasant, energetic young woman who was interested in talking to me and helpful to the point of inspiring! She assessed where I was and what I needed--tour? no. Yoga class starting in a few minutes? Yes!

I jumped right in and found the class members and especially the instructor friendly and not at all yoga snobby. (This is gym yoga so it *is* admittedly a different experience than studio yoga--the class before was some kind of music-pumping cardio and then we rushed right in, lots of chit chat. So you can't expect gym yoga to be the quiet serene spiritual experience you might get at your favorite studio.) But you learn something from everyone and this instructor had great descriptions of the asanas and a wonderful spirit about her.

I've been going to the Old City Sweat a few times and though haven't yet found anyone as engaging as D., everyone has been polite. The facility is nice, clean and not overly crowded.

I'm pleased to have started there and am looking forward to checking out the other locations.

I am pretty blown away by the high school-ish behavior I've seen at the Queen Village location. The eye-rolling, the standing around and gossiping, etc. And the worst offender, a woman with longish brown hair, might be a "manager"! She is very rude and unpleasant; don't bother her for anything as strenuous as reaching for headphones. That said, I LOVE the guy who manages the new Old City location and the gym is brand-new and gorgeous. The other employees are pleasant too. The Fitler Square location is run down and always very humid but employees are nice. Center City workers are condescending and not very pleasant. Stick with Old City.

Walked in and walked right out. You would think that if you have a job at the front desk you would be required to have some sort of customer service training (or at least they should fake it) I have to tell you that I was floored by how rude this person was to me. I hope they understand that people walking into a gym for the first time are usually a bit intimidated, so they should probably invest some time in training. Here are some tips - when a prospective customer walks in ACKNOWLEDGE THEM- When they ask for information about the club: DON'T ROLL YOUR EYES AND START TALKING TO SOMEONE ELSE. When they ask for classes/prices DON'T THROW THE BROCHURE AT THEM! last laugh on them - I already told 10 people that moved to the area not to even bother.

Wrote a review yesterday pertaining to how unprofessional and disappointing I found Sweat Gym, however I found that today it has been taken down as well as the other negative comments other individuals wrote.

Again, I found Sweat gym to be pricey, the management and personal trainers to be rude and later found out that most of them take illegal substances and share that freely with their clients and co-workers as I waited patiently to ask a manager/personal trainer a question.

At first glance Sweat Gym (Queen Village) seemed like the gym of my dreams, however now I regret purchasing the membership. I recommend looking else ware and find staff who are mature and healthy... who wants to be trained by individuals who are immature and clearly don't know what living a healthy lifestyle truely means.

I joined Sweat Manayunk in Dec 06', after moving back to the Philly area from L.A.. I have worked out at a lot of different gyms my whole life. This is one of the best, most complete fitness centers I have ever been to. This gym offers the most amenities for your buck with group fitness included in the price. I mainly use the free weights, but sometimes take their yoga classes or spinning classes. The Gym is alway organized, and the staff is always helpfull and friendly. Great gym!

I have worked out at other gyms in Philly and this one is by far the best. They offer so many different options for fitness. I bounce between the HammerStrength to the Freeweights to the machines. I top off my workout with either the Ergometer or the Stepmill. The facilities are immaculate. The weights are always well organized and accessable. Monday is my favorite, because they have a fun DJ.
Thank you SWEAT!!!!!

I moved to Philly from NYC for business a year ago. I live in Manayunk and work in Center city. I had 2 gym memberships in NYC. One for the weights and machines; and one for the group fitness and spinning.
After moving to philly I was afraid that I would not be able to find a Gym like what I had in NYC. I initially tried out the Sweat Fitness in Manayunk by my house. It blew me away. First, 90% of there equipment is brand new. Second, the facility is immaculate including there locker rooms. What sold me was that they offer an all inclusive package of Icarian free weights/ machines, Precor treadmills and elyptical trainers, a room complete of Hammerstrength equipment, and a well rounded group fitness program which includes spinning. The best part of the membership is that it offers an all inclusive package. I can workout at any of the locations and participate in any of the group fitness without paying extra. It's all included in one price.
Sometimes, I workout at the Center City location after work.
I enjoy these gyms very much. They offer everything I look for in a membership. As long as I stay in Philly, I will remain a member of these Sweat.

Pros: Great atmosphere, equipment, cardio classes

Cons: Parking can be challenging at times.

If you commit to a year at this gym your monthly payments will be an automatically deducted $59, but if you opt to go Month-to-month, the payment is $69. The Manayunk and Center City locations are kept very clean and since I enjoy an early morning workout there are very few people there at this hour and if the cardio equipment is occupied, it frees up quickly. They have a great selection of classes and personal trainers available, although the personal trainers are actually quite expensive at a $60/1/2 hour rate which I found slightly high. Overall I enjoy this gym, but attend it merely out of convinience. The new Sweat on 14th and Arch actually has a pool, although I have not visited here yet.

This gm has everything you would want - new equipment, good class schedule, lot of tvs. Even during busy times you don't have to wait long for equipment. The crowd is primarily in the age groups of 20 and 30 something. very social scene!
