I joined 12th Street Gym in 2001, fresh out of college and new to the Center City area. I loved the space, the constant cleaning, the vast array of options. I loved this gym so much I was thrilled to get a part-time gig instructing

I had to leave my membership at this club as the owner is a TOTAL d-bag. He really thinks he is the ruler of the gym. I pity the employees who HAVE to work for him. After quiting this gym and went to another city gym and have not looked back.

I've been a member here for a long time. A lot of other gyms have opened and some have closed but these folks keep making the place better. Really like the many services in the same buildling and a very cool class choices. Only sun deck I can find at a gym and maybe it's my "thing" but the place is truly clean. I went to the Sporting Club twice ona free pass--it was not nearly as clean. Can't beat it even if it did cost more.

I recently was charged a late fee for a charge that was 2 days late. I unintentionally made this error and as soon as it was brought to my attention I paid the balance in full. When I called to have the late charge assessed I was passed to 4 different people, none of which were willing to bend on this fee. This is my third year being a 12th Street Gym member, meaning I have spent over $1300 with them as a member, yet they would not budge on a $10 charge. To me this is ridiculous especially since it was an accident and was only 2 days. when speaking with the manager asking for this he was rude and made insinuations regarding my personal life and my timeliness with bills, which were assumptions and had nothing to do with my 12th Street Gym Membership. This is not the first time I have had to deal with the management staff and always they are unwilling to work with me or to help me out in any way as a loyal customer. I am moving very nearby but will travel to go to the gym just not to give these jerks my business. POOR POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE IF YOU ASK ME.

I guess you get what you pay for. I left 4 months ago and am still dumbfounded by how outrageously unprofessional and downright trashy some of the staff are. I had to step over a group of staff that seemed to be using the locker room benches as their break room every visit in order to access the locker I rented. Appalling garbage came out of their mouths and I never witnessed any of them working- the locker room was always nasty. They also need to ventilate the work-out rooms in the basement better, and find a way for people to actually access the spinning classes they purportedly offer. Its a shame because this place could've been so nice.

I was a member of the 12th street gym. Due to job loss and upcoming eviction I knew I would be moving out of the area to realities as of may 2009. I informed Melissa the asst manager of this first verbally, then by writing in March. She informed me that I would have to prove that I had moved out of the gym contract area by providing her with either a utility bill or a lease. the first week of May I sent her a copy of my phone bill and a copy of my new bank statement and a copy of the court order showing I was no longer in my Philly apartment.

She informed me that because it was a Cell phone bill and not a Land line bill, I WOULD NOT BE LET OUT OF MY CONTRACT. I informed her that being I was now living with realities that already had phone service and utility service, I did not have a bill to provide to her. I would have thought that the cell phone bill and my new bank statement would have been enough proof to be let out of a contact. She was \unflinching, stating that at this point she would only accept a lease. The next day I had my relatives prepare and have me sign a lease, which I mailed the next day.

This was almost 3 months ago and I heard nothing. Just a week ago, I receive a piece of mail from the gym, dated 7/29/09 that lists a balance of 74.00 and a collection fee of 75.00

I find this absolutely criminal and ludicrous. What else does this woman need from me to let me pout of my contract? And why have I not received any bills for the past two months after I sent in a lease? I also find it curious that they have no problem sending me the bill to my new address, yet they don??t recognize this address as valid enough to let me out of my contract.

It is not like I used the gym and did not pay. I informed them months before I left and have given more proof that any court of law would need, yet Melissa refuses to let me out of the contract even though I have given her all the proof as stated in the contract.

As someone who works out 3+ times a week, I would suggest finding another gym. Membership is so cheap, but in my experience you get what you pay for, crappy cheap gym equipment, unhappy underpaid staff, and a smelly sweat box they call a gym.
As a personal trainer, I would suggest coughing up the extra bucks to go PSC, Iron Works or City Fitness.
There I KNOW that you will get your moneys worth!

Pros: Nada

Cons: Smelly, weird layout, crappy equipment, horrible management

.

Front desk staff are fine, but management needs work. The staff are friendly but don't seem to know exactly what the membership policies are, so if you ask two people, you get two different answers. And don't ever try to cancel or transfer your membership because they'll find a way to screw you out of any money you have coming to you.

Pros: yoga instructors, affordable rates

Cons: they do NOT "deliver for their members"

.

I'm not a gym person AT ALL, but I love 12th Street Gym. It's my first gym after college, and it couldn't be more convenient to my neighborhood and my job. It's right in the middle of Midtown Village, so it's walkable from pretty much every Center City neighborhood.

Now, onto the actual gym - I have NEVER had any problem with the staff. They are always friendly and quick to help. The equipment is easy to locate despite the "maze like" atmosphere so many have described, b/c everything is well-marked. If you don't know where something is, just ask! They don't bite.

Classes are awesome, as someone mentioned- Stacey's tae bo is great, and so is the yoga. As an avid yoga person, I feel really challenged here on top of not being judged. Some yoga studios I've gone too felt really competitive, but this is definitely not the case.

And let's not forget - THE PRICE. Even though I live nearby, I did shop around for a bit. The price here just could not be beat by any other gym.

Pros: Convenient location, hours, and price

.

The gym overall is an okay place. The equipments are okay. However, an employee called Cynthia is very rude, very mean, and makes you feel very unwelcome with her glaring at you often. She is very unhelpful and rude when you ask her for assistance. If the 12th St gym managers does read the reviews here, I hope he/she would have a talk w/ Cynthia (or even get rid of her!!) to change her mean attitude toward people!

Pros: in Center City, convenient location

Cons: rude and mean staff (Cynthia)

.

If I could give Zero stars, I would.

The owner is sleezy and creepy and suspends people's memberships for making complaints.

The manager is rude and lacks communication skills.

If you want to work out with stuck up, rude, and completely unhelpful trainers, this is the place for you.

It might be cheap but I wouldn't spend a cent for this place!

The trainers don't follow the gym's policies and are quite rude about sharing.
The owner is a psycho control freak and spends his time yelling at his staff and suspending members' memberships if they complain about legitimate things.
The manager is so rude and a poor communicator. I would never go back there again!

I understand that you get what you pay for, but 12th Street is not even worth the low price. If you like to parade around a bunch of people just staring at you then this is the gym for you. Awful. Equipment is placed in sporadic locations and there are not enough tread mills. Who wants to run on a tread mill in a room where you are facing other people who look comatose sitting on stationary bikes. I don't understand the point for many of these people to be at the gym besides to take up space. Awful. The equipment that they do have, is outdated and I'm pretty sure I've seen the same models listed on craigslist for under $50. If you want to run on a used worn out treadmill that shakes when you're on it then hop on. Awful. The locker room smells foul and anyone who dares to use the shower is risking a bacterial infection. The whole gym awful, simply awful.

Pros: Price

Cons: Overcrowded, smelly, a meat market, outdated equipment aside from one room

It has potential to be amazing. I think the management could be slightly more accommodating to the staff and moral would raise. Then the place would be magnificent. The equipment is great, staff is friendly and the classes are fab!

Gym is crowded, trainers act like they own the gym and this owner is an A-hole. Ask ANY former employee and this loser has a power trip x's 10. If an A-hole owner and an over crowded aren't a deterient to choose another gym, then how about the cramped basement feel this club has. Try Sweat or PSC as they are much better clubs.

I've been a member at 12th Street forever. If you're into aerobics this is the place. NO other gym in the City can compete with the variety and excellence of every class. The instructors are all phenominal, especially Stacey who teaches the Tai Bo Classes. The dance classes also are amazing especially the ones taught by Stepp and Antonio. This place is more than a regular gym. It makes working out fun and the atmosphere is great.

I heart 12th St Gym...and I am not a gym person by nature. 12th St just has good energy -- I actually enjoy being there! It's totally unpretentious - not to mention clean and inexpensive. And they recently upgraded most of the cardio jawns to have TV. [I need all the distraction possible for cardio.]

The yoga classes & teachers are great -- I esp. recommend Stephanie's Yoga classes - Yoga Zen on Thurs & Daoyin Yoga on Sat. It's Chinese-style yoga -- so kinda like yoga mixed w/ tai chi... She's a fabulous instructor and her classes will kick your butt ... in a figurative & metaphysical way!

Cons: Super crowded after work...but that's inevitable

Pros: I've been a member of the 12th St. Gym for about a month now, and I've found the variety and quality of the classes to be excellent. Taebo with Stacey is extremely challenging, but she uses good music that helps pull you through. Daria's 12th Street Sculpt class is also tough - your arms and legs will be shaking - and worth the time. Lindsay and Chuck both offer interesting yoga classes, and I plan to try some of the other instructors.

Cons: The layout of the gym is cramped and confusing, and the temperature often seems too warm and humid. Even though I'm a swimmer, I don't anticipate ever using the (small) pool, as swimming such tiny laps would just be frustrating.

But if you're interested in some really great classes, friendly staff, and available equipment (after the 5-7pm rush), it's a great value for the price.

I came as a guest of a friend. She told me you absolutely have to take Taebo, it just like the video and them some, plus Stacey is insane. I've figured I've taken kickboxing before, so whats the big deal, i know what to do, but I was WRONG. My friend is right Stacy is INSANE!!! She trains with Billy blanks and her classes have humbled me.. I have NEVER have cardio like that...plus the music ROCKS!! I'm a convert, I love Taebo!!

The gym is cool, they have WiFi and a lounge, steam weights...I like that it's clean also.

After receiving a promo from 12th Street Gym in the mail and walking by the gym yesterday, I wanted to write this review. Last year I went to the gym to check it out. I was not overly impresses with the staff or the facility. The gym tries to over power the market, yet it does not really have the features of a good gym. I disliked the layout, very cramped and there is no flow to the equipment. I found the facilty to be clean in some areas, and less in others. The pool is not a place I would visit. Most of the members spend more time staring and trying to hook up, rather then working out. If want a hook up spot, then this is your place. I want a gym with a caring staff and true focus on fitness. After seeing there recent promotions, I feel it revolves more around money then true care and concern for the customer. I would suggest shopping around before you invest in a this gym!

I joined 12th Street Gym a year ago when I moved to Philadelphia; I was trying to get in shape for my wedding & drop a few pounds - they are known throughout the area for good classes, which is what I was looking for - I easily surpassed by goal weight by doing a combination of 12th street's aerobics, yoga & pilates classes, as well as cardio & weight training - they have a great variety of equipment and facilities, including a sun deck, pool, and raquet ball courts. The instructors are great & will kick your butt. Classes are well scheduled to accomodate work - they have early am, lunch time and evening classes, and the gym is open from 5:30am to 11pm on weekdays. Most classes are 45 minutes to 1 hour, but they also have a few 20 minute abs classes that are a perfect add-on to a workout. Cardio studios don't have a lot in the way of A/V equipment - it's better if you have your own ipod or similar.

This gym is also a great deal - roughly $500/year, including all classes. They also have a tanning salon and chiropractor in-house.

PROS: Great value, good facilities
CONS: Limited A/V equipment

This is a great place to do pilates - the atmosphere is perfect and the instructors are very knowledgeable and are not afraid to challenge you. I've been taking pilates here since it has opened and it's done nothing but great things for my mental and physical state of being. If you decide to take pilates at this place, you will not be dissappointed!

I really like 12th Street Gym. Iliked it Better when "Sister's In Shape" was there, but now, they have their own gym. 12th Street Gym doesn't necessarily have state-of-the-art equiptment and the upstairs area is like a maze, but overall, it's a good gym.

I have been a member of this gym for almost 10 years. The facility is sparkling, the staff are wonderful and the trainers are extremely well educated and always available. Avoid the crunch right after 5 p.m. as it gets too crowded for me...the hours are excellent and the gym can't be beat for value.

I joined 12th St for the excellent value it offers. While being among the more affordable gyms they offer basketball, steambath, pool, and tons of free weights and cardio equipment. They have a wide range of classes as well. It's locale makes it easy to get to and is a half block off a PAtco stop (for those who utilize Philly's underground in inclimate weather.)
