For fresh bread or sweet treats Metropolitan Bakery is a sure bet though they can be a bit over-priced and over-rated. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here but if you're in the area.

Pretty good bakery. I have had a couple different things from here and there good enough to eat but do leave something to be desired. Go here is you want but it is a little over rated for me.

Whenever I need or desire a fancy, artisan bread or roll, I come here. Everything is super luxury, and well made. While they specialize in breads, everything is delicious, particularly the sweet treats. A great place to pick up a dessert for a dinner party.

The bread here is fantastic, even the baguettes are like no other in Philly - impossibly crispy, thin crust outside, very soft & light inside, perfect texture when you bite into them. I hate to break them apart for fear of losing all the crumbs. Very easy to eat the whole loaf, & then spend the next hour doubled over. It's worth it....though I don't recommend it. There are a few Metropolitans around Philly, & the quality is the same, they are all excellent. But the staff in Chestnut Hill, well, a bit cold. Maybe it was an off day. It wouldn't stop me from going back. There are quite a few excellent bakeries in Philly, but Metropolitan, which makes over 30 varieties of breads, as well as homemade pastries & cakes, is a cut above the rest. They pride themselves on using the freshest ingredients, producing everything by hand, & sticking to old-world European baking techniques, which give the bread its signature flavor & quality. The store is pretty tiny but there's no way you'll miss it. The heady smell of freshly baked bread permeates the block.

PROS: hand-produced breads, old-world baking techniques
CONS: staff not too friendly
