Slooooow Service- Do not expect to stop in for a quick doughnut or cake take back to office. Behind counter ladies chatted away while a line of 5 patiently waited. Older lady would not make eye contact with me and no smiling at all.
Love the Stuff they produce, but don't need the attitude!

WOW...After hearing about all the bad it so far outweights the good... I would suggest the managment improves before they go out of business.... One bad comment outweight 100 good comments......People need to realize customers should be treated with respect, without customers theres no business or money...

I agree with the other ratings that the Paddy cake has WONDERFUL baked goods, but terrible service.
They do seem to employ some extremely rude people, especially the older women who work the counter. One older woman in particular loves to bark at customers and berate the bakers in the back. There are definitely some friendly employees to be sure, but the meanness outweighs the friendliness for me.

The Paddy Cake Bakery has unbelievable baked goods e.g. breads, cookies and cakes! I have always gone out of my way to stop in 'Little Italy of Pittsburgh' and pick up a few items for family and friends.

NEVER EVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!

Their Customer Service is TERRIBLE. The young ladies stand around chopping on gum, do not make eye contact and are so very rude that the entire shopping experience is ruined within 5 minutes!

Wake up Pittsburgh Business People! Quality is the Product/Pricing and Customer Service! I will go out of my way to share my comments with everyone in Fox Chapel to shop at Oakmont Bakery in Oakmont PA where they don't have quite the Product and Pricing of Paddy Cake but their Customer Service is OUTSTANDING! They are kind, can hold an intelligent and meaningful conversation and most importantly - they want you to be satisfied with your entire experience. They envelope the customer with Quality Management!

Paddy Cake, I do not see you in business 5 years from now and perhaps consider 'screening' your future employees for Quality!

What a sad discovery. I had rated Paddy Cake the Best Bakery in Pittsburgh 7 years ago when I did my research and data collection for Harvard Business School and now they would not make the top 10!

Finally, say HEY to your employees, because I certainly will not be seeing them soon!

This bakery has always been a very good bakery. Cannot pin point on what has happened. Order a full sheet cake and when I got there to pick it up I was told that is would be about 20 minutes to 1/2 hour longer because they messed up

Before we even showed up for our disappointing cake tasting, it was nearly impossible to get an appointment. Three times I got put on hold over the phone, then forgotten about. They're not open on Sundays or evenings, making it impossible for a working couple to make an appointment, plus their "wedding coordinator" isn't available every day.

When we arrived, we had 2 little pieces of white cake given to us: one plain white, one white with a raspberry filling. That's it. That was our cake tasting. $235 for a 3-tier white wedding cake? Paddy Cake can't even do any type of decorations that aren't frosting-based ?? no sugared or gelled flowers (they'd have to order those), no edible golds or glitters, nothing. They won't even put fresh flowers on it themselves ?? they "let the florist do that."

I was amazed that the "wedding coordinator" was completely unprepared. We asked her, what if we wanted a spice cake instead? Or a carrot cake? Or a chocolate cake? Could we taste any samples of those? No, because she hadn't made any of those for us to try. The coordinator was disinterested in helping us think outside of the box. She seemed frazzled and "bothered" that we were even there. When I suggested we might like a pumpkin pie in addition to our cake, she looked at me like I'd grown a third eye.

The kicker was, I had a gift certificate for a free 2-tier cake. The "wedding coordinator" actually said at some point in the conversation that my fiancee and I were "obviously going to go with Paddy Cake Bakery since we had a gift certificate," but to come back in August so she could make a spice cake for us to try.

What?!

If you want a plain white wedding cake that tastes no better or no worse than any other white cake, why waste $235 ?? $350 here? You're better off going to Market District.

This place is a joke.

My family has ordered from this bakery for OVER 20 YEARS- POSSIBLY 30?! Well, in the past 9 years or so, I have seen their quality rapidly go further and further downhill. Worse and worse quality to the product, less and less quality ingredients, sloppier and sloppier decorating, ruder and ruder counter staff.

We have continued to shop there just due to the location being convenient, but these days you are really TAKING YOUR CHANCES as to whether the items you buy from them will be somewhat tasty or TOTALLY INEDIBLE. Still, I try to support neighborhood businesses as much as possible so it does break my heart to trash them in a review like this, but these things need to be said.

We got some cupcakes for a party last year in November that we literally could not eat, they were so dry and bad- they went in the trash (not cheap either). Thank goodness it was just a small kiddie birthday get-together and not an important occasion with guests I would have been embarrassed in front of.

They continue to have a lot of customers due to their location and due to people remembering how good they USED TO BE, so when folks are back in the old neighborhood, they return. But oh, how the standards have fallen.

We considered getting our wedding cake from them (again, in order to support a neighborhood place) in 2008 but they gave us such a hard time regarding even getting an appointment for a cake consultation that we went with another baker, out in the west end. Looking back, I am glad it happened that way.

As for daily items, their breads are usually decent and their donuts are edible (not great) but have way too much frosting. Cookies are usually fine but sometimes their cake decorating is clearly being done as such a rush job that it's sloppy beyond description. Danishes and many other items give the impression that something went sort of wrong with the recipe, items are heavy and greasy when they should be fluffy or flaky or soft and moist. Also I don't know how they get away with serving such pathetic cannolis in an Italian neighborhood- pastry cream and zero ricotta, plus just in general- funky ingredients that are blantantly, obviously pre-fab, no fillings seem freshly made, it's all out of some mass-produced tube. And for this low quality, they make you pay premium prices.

I was in the bakery about a year ago when the counter staff were discussing how the bakery is employing someone illegally, under the table, who should not be working because he is also receiving disability checks. So apparently the management no longer even cares about honesty in business, let alone quality product or pleasing the customer. Maybe they are employing the cheapest bakers and decorators rather than the more talented ones. If this is the case, it certainly shows.

Today I picked up a birthday cake for my father's birthday, and it looks like a 5th grader decorated it. I could have done a better job myself. Have not tasted it yet- party is this evening. I think I am DONE with continuing to try to support this neighborhood landmark.

As someone born within a mile of this bakery, I regret having to write this review. For years since the other classic Bloomfield bakeries gradually disappeared, it was heartrning to continue to see Paddy Cake on Liberty Avenue. We began going there for holiday needs, as well as all birthdays and other family events.

Sadly, the last time that we used Paddy Cake for the birthday of a young daughter turning six who needed a cake for the party at home, plus cupcakes for the celebration in kindergarten around the corner at Immaculate Conception School, someone took the order and changed the spelling of her name (carefully given at the time of placing the order) for the cake without even trying to get in touch with us.

At pickup, I was shocked to see my daughter's name misspelled and nearly asked for a refund since no one was willing to accept any responsibility for the deliberate error, nor offer any sort of a discount. Since the party was only a hour or so away, I had little choice but to accept the cake and hope that my daughter---who knows only to well how to write her name---might not notice in the excitement. Mercifully, we managed to distract her through the candles and signing, quickly cutting the cake right through her name before she became any the wiser.

Having grown up in Bloomfield, it pains me to say this, but Paddy Cake has become nothing more than a cash cow for the nonchalant owners, while the staff seems to have grown largely indifferent to customers. After years as faithful customers, we now make the extra effort to go to Prantl's in Shadyside, with excellent personal service. It's worth the trip.

Growing up in Bloomfield, Paddy Cake Bakery was always one of my favorite places to stop. Even after moving to the North Hills, I still continued to venture to Paddy Cake for their wide selection of delectable desserts. Everything in the store is always FRESH and their customer service is outstanding!! When it finally came time to order my wedding cake, it was the only bakery I would consider. They promptly set up an appointment with me where I sampled all kinds of yummy fillings. The manger was was such a pleasure to work with; she took time to go through all of the details and helped to incorporate my own ideas. When the cake arrived on my wedding day it was even more beautiful than I had imagined. All of my guests raved about how moist and tasty the cake was!!!

My wedding cake was absolutely delicious, just what I ordered on the INSIDE (choclate with rasberry creme filling, butter creme icing). They even delivered on their day off (but had to pay extra - it was a sunday afternoon wedding). Only one small glitch, - when reviewing our wedding pictures during our 10 year wedding anniversary, I noticed that the cake design I ordered was NOT what I received. Didn't notice on wedding day because the caterers cut it quickly after delivery as it was to be served up as dessert (we took our cake cutting pictures quickly!). So be sure to double check the design!

Ordered our wedding cake from them and soon came to regret it. You have to wait forever (10-20 minutes!) on hold every time you phone in and then when someone does get on the line to take your call they are rude. The cake itself was sickly sweet--yuck. After having paid my non-refundable deposit, I asked them if they could use less sugar in the icing and was told "no" (absolutely no attempt to make me what I wanted).
Wish I had gone to Prantl's in Shadyside or Bethel Park Bakery instead.
Very disappointing.

Paddy Cake is like the bakery's of yesteryear. Fresh, tasty donuts, cakes, cookies, brownies, etc.
The lady locks are to die for! Being in the middle of Bloomfield, street parking is tight, however it is a block from a hospital which has a parking garage. The staff range in age from teens to sr. citizens. All were pleasant and attentive to the customers the times I have been there.

Boxes tied with string! When is the last time you've seen that?

So refresing to find a REAL bakery in these days of store bakeries.

This has always been one of my favorite bakeries. If I am somewhat near the area, I will stop here. Their baked goods are always fresh and there is lots to choose from. Try their pumpkin roll (in season), it's the smoothest and creamiest I've ever had. Or, if you're choosing your wedding cake, you can't go wrong with their white batter with raspberry filling - it's out of this world!

be careful with these people, my wedding cake for 120 didn't feed 90. they put a support on TOP of each tier (under the icing) instead of under. THerefore, you can't cut through and when the cake is cut to be served the icing is all pulled off of the top and my cake fell apart. The bakery refused to give any sort of refund. I should have had 30 pieces left over instead, I didn't even get a piece. And, they didn't leave a box for the top layer.

.

I ordered a cake for 120, 90 showed and we still didn't have enough cake. When we went to cut our cake, we got through icing then couldn't get the knife further. It was stuck on a piece of plastic that was on the whole top of each tier under the icing. When the hotel went to cut the cake, same problem. They had to lift a plastic support sheet off of the cake, which pulled off all of the icing and pulled apart most of the cake. The bakery claimed this is industry standard, but both the hotel and 2 other bakeries said that the support usually goes just under the tier, not over the top of it. Paddy-cake blamed the hotel stating that they pulled it off too fast. But, even if they pulled it off slow like they claim, it still would have pulled off all of the icing. I told the hotel that Paddy-cake blamed them and they called Paddy-cake themselves. Paddy-cake denied ever saying it. Paddy-cake refused to give me any sort of refund "since you were able to use some of the cake". We should have had 30 extra pieces and instead some of the guests (including the bride) didn't get any! Those who had some said that it tasted good, but what does that matter when not all the guests get some. Furthermore, the driver didn't leave a box for the top layer. I was told "he must have forgotten". The hotel had to empty fudge out of a box that it came in and put my top layer in that. What a disaster. I'll never go there again and I recommend that no one else let them ruin their cake either!

PROS: had the cake there on time, those who got some said it was good
CONS: price, ran out of cake, no box left for top layer

PROS: had the cake there on time, those who got some said it was good
CONS: price, ran out of cake, no box left for top layer

.

I have been getting cakes from this bakery for as long as I can remember and I am still willing to drive the whole way across town just to pick up one of their delicious birthday cakes any time I throw a party. This is the kind of cake you are willing to drive an hour for!
