It's a really small shop - it would be great if you could eat in, but it's just a to go bread market. The loaves are delicious and unique. The coffee and pastries are great too. There is also a small case for yummy things like hummus and cheese, etc.

I love stopping by this authentic bakery nestled on a small side street within steps from Rittenhouse Square. A small speciality foods selection, a great place for morning coffee, and of course the breads are superb.

This bakery is fabulous! Their breads are pastries are always fresh.
The millet muffins and ginger scones are the best pastries I have found in the city. Their brownies are pretty fabulous, too!

I wonder if the two other people who have reviewed Metropolitan Bakery have visited the same boulangerie as I have, for we have totally different impressions. Metropolitan has more than satisfied our expectations for years. Their breads are absolutely wonderful, it's clean, not at all dirty, and their selection is world-class. Now if only they'd bring back the mushroom fougasse and the multi-seeded batard, my two favorites. Try their different types of rye bread, their rosemary olive bread, their chocolate & dried cherry bread, their ciabatta, actually ALL of them!

A short time before his untimely death in a plane crash, the famous french breadmaker, Olivier Poilane, visited Philadelphia for a food seminar at The University of Pennsylvania. Guess what he brought back on the plane to Paris? Metropolitan breads! I happened to be seated near him and he remarked that those he'd sampled were spectacular.

The coffee is exceptional (and its organic/fair trade), but be warned: This is not like an authentic French bakery. The croissants are heavy and sweet rather than light and buttery. Some people like it that way, but if you're used to real, French-style croissants, you'll feel like you ate a brick. The chocolate croissant was a disaster -- when I bit inside, I found not the lovely chocolate paste that fills a real pain au chocolat, but rather a small, hard chocolate lump. Seriously -- it was candy-bar hard. On top of everything, the service was a bit frigid, and the food seemed overpriced. A coffee and three croissant for $9? Hmmm.

Metropolitian Bakery has the most delicious morning treats. Besides brewing delicious coffee, they also offer daily made, fresh breads, crossaints, muffins, danishes etc. Many times I have taken friends here for breakfast, as well as purchased pastries for early morning meetings and have received a tremendous amount of compliments on not only the freshness, but how incredibly delicious the pastries were. When having family luncheons I have purchased some of their bread and it has proved to be the freshest bread from any bakery I have tried here in the city. I would highly recommend anyone with visiting guests to take them to this store for some delectable treats.

This bakery has excellent fresh-baked bread, and carries a variety of types. I love the ones with nuts and grains in them, and I also highly recommend their bread with olives in it (I cant remember the exact name). You can see the loaves as you try to decide, and they will slice the loaf if you want. The only thing is that the bread does tend to be pretty hearty and firm, and its not really soft and fluffy bread, if you prefer that. There are several branches of this bakery around Philadelphia, but I tend to go to the one around Rittenhouse Square (a convenient location if youre hanging around Rittenhouse Park on a nice day). They also sell other things, like locally made jams, sauces, etc. Decently priced, and you can get one of those cards, where they stamp it for every loaf you buy, and when you buy a certain number of loaves, you get one free.

PROS: Always fresh
CONS: No fluffy airy bread

The chocolate cherry bread baked on Sundays is amazing, although I wouldn't consider it bread...more like a dessert, but WOW! Such cute pastries there, too.
