This place is pretty dreadful. It's hard to get through on the phone, and the front desk staff can often be quite rude. Those aren't the biggest problems, however, as they pale in comparison to the nastiness of the veterinarians themselves and to the exorbitant expense of all the tests and procedures they happily push on panicked pet owners. When our animals are sick, we trust our veterinarians to have their best interest at heart, under the assumption that all vets are animal lovers, and Dr. Milner drives home the point that this assumption is misguided. She is, in a word, heartless. I took my cat there a couple years ago, and, even though she has since died under the care of another vet, the experience with Dr. Milner remains one of the most upsetting experiences I ever hope to have with a healthcare professional. She's terrible. If you can afford how quickly the cost of care can skyrocket there, at least insist on seeing Dr. Andeer. With many cats of her own, some of them quite ill in their own right, she's the sole light in an otherwise dark place.

The Cat Dr. is by far the best cat practice in Philadelphia. The staff are compassionate, knowledgeable, and genuinely love cats.
I have nothing but praise for the doctors, nurses, and support staff.
True, the fees are considerably more than other practices, but it is more than worth it if you can afford it. There are other good vets out there for less money, but none with such vast expertise.
I admit, I have sometimes opted for a less expensive vet when I've been broke and had a sick kitty.
For plain vanilla visits like vaccinations and UTI meds, you may be okay elsewhere.
However, if your kitty is sick, and If you are able to invest big bucks in state of the art veterinary care (special treatments, and cutting edge medicine) the Cat Dr. is bar none.

My four cats love them!

Just got home from my first visit to the Cat Doctor. The staff was amazing, reassuring, and experienced. I own a very skiddish feral cat that was rescued from the streets. She is scared of almost everyone, and I'm the only person she lets hold her. The staff was outstanding, they handled her in such a calm way, a sign of a doctor with loads of experience. They were thorough with her check up, but managed to get everything done, including check out, in 20 minutes! I was nervous about bringing her to the vet, I thought it would become a horrible experience because she is typically so scared, but they put both my cat and me at ease! Would highly recommend to friends, family, and strangers alike.

Pros: Very experienced, reassuring doctors

Cons: Any vet is going to be costly, but worth it

The Cat Doctor is truly top notch. We have never gotten anything but stellar service and care for our two cats. From the front desk to the doctors, this office is incredibly professional and worth every penny.

I took my Kitty to this vet when I rescued him from the street. They charged me hundreds of dollars to get him vaccinated, which I knew was more then average, but I didn't mind because I thought I was getting world class service from people who really loved cats. They said It would be hundreds more to have him neutered. At this point I knew he was healthy and chose to have him neutered somewhere else. (I was able to have it done for free by some compassionate people who really do love cats and don't care about money). So far I would give them an average rating. Then It slipped, big time. I called on Friday morning about my cat urinating outside of his litter box. I asked that a Vet call me back with some answers or suggestions. I didn't know if it was a medical or behavioral issue so I was concerned. I was told to expect, "definitely" a call back by the afternoon. Four Thirty came and went without even a phone call to postpone the conversation. I ended up calling them around 4:45pm hoping to catch them before they left. They picked up and told me that they were open till 7:00pm and said someone would (again definitely) call me back before 7:00 or if not, they would get back to me Saturday morning. Now this whole time I'm worried about my cat. No one calls me Friday. No one calls me Saturday. I call them on Saturday evening and left them a message that they will no longer be my Vet. They call me Monday at 11:00 while I'm at work and with a client and act like nothing is wrong. These people are clueless. They don't care about customers AT ALL and will lie to you. Stay away from these selfish, lying, money-grubbers.

This is the third time I will write this review which keeps getting deleted. I feel it is important to tell people to beware of this doctors office because of my terrible experience here. My cat had a runny nose and I took her here. The doctor told me she needed dentistry so I agreed. This lead to my cat refusing to eat for days. I took her back to the vet and they kept her for a week and eventually said they would need to put the cat on a feeding tube. This was a healthy cat with sniffles and dirty teeth and now she needed a feeding tube?!? I refused and brought my cat home. She started eating right away and seemed fine. I feel like I was being taken advantage of and paid all this hospitalization money and the cat was fine. This place is frightening.

I would run not walk away from this place, in my experience they were all about the money and had no problem letting it show. I never even received any communication with the actual vet who was supposed to treat my cat in the first place because they thought I could not pay. I have never felt so insulted in my life at such a critical time for my cat and would not recommend this place at all. The front staff did what they could for me. I just get a bad feeling when I think of the place and I agree that perhaps the vet Dr Aigner should consider people and not only dollars (or at least explore the fact that many people have this impression),maybe she doesn't care.

I took my cat there recently and I had a very good experience. My girlfriend had made the appointment but I was bringing the cat there and I was reading the reviews on this site. One thing I feel one has to realize is that people with good experiences tend to not say anything while those with a bad experience are the most vocal. Either case the reviews got me worried. Fortuantly once I got there the people were very polite the doctor was wonderful and the nurse was very nice. I highly recommend them.

First, I have to say the office is beautiful and is so clean. Doesnt at all smell like a vet office ( no chemical or pet odor) I got an appointment the very same day I called and surgery the following day. I took my 3 y-o Bengal cat in on 5/12/08 because she broke her tooth. They examined her and told me exactly what was going on and gave me a quote for surgery/extraction. ( The final bill was actually $100 less then the quote) Everyone there was friendly (Chase @ the front desk help me with getting the cat's medical info emailed) and I could tell they really do love all the cats they treat. I picked her up the next day and Alex thoroughly explained what they did in surgery. They were so knowledgeable. Dr.Milner is wonderful. They whole experience was fantastic and my Bengal is doing great! Very glad I found this cat vet!

I personally had a wonderful experience at this office. We recently moved to Philadelphia and foolishly assumed that because our cats had recently been to the vet and vaccinated, we would not have to find a vet in Philly. That was obviously a mistake when our male cat had an emergency the other day. I naturally panicked because I didn?t have anybody to bring him to. The Cat Doctor was fantastic: I called them twenty minutes before I got there. They were caring and knowledgeable. When I came with my cat, I told them I absolutely had to be at work that day because I had just started a new job. They were very understanding and they gave me an estimate before I left that included a low, medium and high cost. They kept my cat for me until 6:30 that night and they kept in touch with me throughout the day and they did not make me feel like I was being unreasonable when I called for a status check multiple times. Their estimate was on target and there were no surprises. The Cat Doctor is honestly completely out of the way for us, but having had such a good experience with every single person I came into contact with- from the front staff, to the nurse, to the vet: these are our permanent vets!!!!!

Being recent relocators and becuase my cats had already had their yearly shots, I did not think to look for a vet. That is until I came home from a weekend away last night to find my five year-old cat crying in pain and urinating every minute. After a frantic night trying to locate a vet on the web, my decision to go to the Cat Doctor was ultimately made on their website: I liked it that they had office cats and they placed rescues up for adoption. Although this had nothing to do with my cat's urination problem, their website led me to believe these were people who genuinely cared about cats. I got on the bus this morning and called them on my way over there, determined that these would be my new vets- whether they like it or not! What a fantastic place: the front staff was wonderful and knowledgeable and the vet and techs were fantastic. They handled my over-anxiousness well: letting me call several times throughout the day and not making me feel bad for doing that! They took wonderful care of my pet and me! Despite the fact that I have to take the bus and there is no parking: these are my new vets!

Proceed with caution in going to this vet or use their service.

I had taken my two cats to the vet 6 months ago and was happy with the service I received. One of my cats had a urinary tract infection at the time. The doctor had me switch their diet from dry food to wet food.

One of my cats started to loose a little bit of weight and eat less. I thought nothing of it because she was overweight to begin with. I thought the new diet was just healthier for her.

Unfortunately, I noticed that my cat was jaundiced, which was quite alarming to me so I called the doctor immediately. They told me that the doctor would not see my cat and if I wanted medical treatment I should take her somewhere else. I was appalled by this. It is not like we weren't a previous patient and I called on a day that they were closed. I was shocked that the vet could not just squeeze her in.

I unfortunately had to put my cat to sleep. She was jaundiced due to liver problems. Apparently my cat was not eating enough and her liver shut down. Cats unlike people and other animals have unique livers and if they go two or three days with little or no food, they will suffer from liver damage. I was not warned of this by the vet when I changed my cats diets. The vet should have told me if I notice a change in their eating habits to bring them in or call. It pains me to know that this could have been prevented. It also pains me to know that the doctor did not have the compassion to see a sick cat in her time of need.

I would never bring an animal there again. The doctor should educate patients on preventative health and should have compassion for the animals they treat. It is your choice, but I highly recommend not trusting them with your animals. Who wants a vet that will not make themselves available for your animal when it is sick?

I have Three cats. One of which has had an allergy issue - I constantly had to clean her ears out and she would shake her head - The Doctor used a scope to examine her ears and then gave me a medicine for her allergy and put her on special food - but her ears remained the same. Now the special food was very expensive and of course with three cats - I just put all of them on it since it is impossible to feed just one cat the special food..Anyway - My cats remained on this food and my cats ear remained an issue - until recently when I moved and went to a new doctor who told me she needed medicince -and not he special food - within two weeks of the new medicine her ear cleared up and she has been the regular food for 3 months and no "allergies" . My poor poor cat - for over 5 yrs she has this problem - You decide what you think about that - but I am not impressed. I have had other issues as well - one of which is that my one of my other cats suddenly went bald after bringing him home after he stayed there for a few days. I had asked them to bathe him which they told me they thought he didn't need a bath - after I had paid to keep him there for 3 days and they admitted he peed all over one of the techs...uhh I don't know what you think but my cat needed a bath and the explanation for the bald patch was a reaction to flea medication - advantage - which why did they give him that when I give him monthly doses of it myself and why a reaction if I usually give it too him. I am just not left with a good feeling about this vet - My main concern is not money Its the CARE and WELL BEING of my cats and it breaks my heart to know that the cat doctor would let my one cat go untreated for so long - I would have to say that maybe she needs to start hitting the books and getting up to par in her medical education..

I'm not a client at the Cat Doctor, but I work at another vet practice in the region. In regards to the previous review, not only would it be poor medicine to refill a prescription on a patient you hadn't seen in a year...it would be illegal. You may not refill a prescription unless you have seen the client in the past year...simple as that. They were probably just being nice by giving you a half script to hold you over until you could make an appointment. If your cat is totally healthy as you say, it shouldn't need a prescription anyway. I would take that previous review to actually reflect positively on this practice. Don't know about why they asked you to seek another vet. Maybe you were exceptionally mean to the front end staff? I know at our place there are thousands of clients and inevitably some things slip through the cracks. As long as they try to fix things you should cut them some slack...to a certain extent, of course!

I have never been there, but the doctors at my hospital speaks very highly of this place and have even referred clients there for surgery.

Just hate to see another animal hospital bad mouthed for following the rules :)

i just got a letter telling me i should find another vet,the staff does not
like my additude.well guess what the feeling is mutual!the front desk staff is rude and the doctors have no respect for the owners of the pets.I took my very sick cat to them a couple years ago and was back and forth so many times and spent so much money and was made
to feel like I was guilty for my cat being sick.only to take her to another vet and guess what she has been just fine for over 17 months.yes she need medicine on a daily basis which require a perscription. They had no problem writing me one which i could take to the pharmacy and get filled.I called them last week (no response)
i called them again to see the status of the script.they told me yes it is here come pick it up.fine i went to get it and it was not a script but
instead a bottle of the medicine which is way more expensive from them. Then when i complained they went to the Dr Agner.she writes me a script for less than half of what she usually does with no refills.
again i complain only to be told my cat has not been seen in a year
time so i cannot get the same script.Couldn't this have been explained when i called? My thing is this my cat is 12 years old does not go out and is doing fine...you would think they would be happy about that.no they just want $$$$$$$$.I have a great vet who cares for my cats nad treats people with respect. If you like to be abused go ahead and take your cat to them.good luck.

time so i cannot get the same script.Couldn't this have been explained when i called? My thing is this my cat is 12 years old does not go out and is doing fine...you would think they would be happy about that.no they just want $$$$$$$$.I have a great vet who cares for my cats nad treats people with respect. If you like to be abused go ahead and take your cat to them.good luck.

I have had three cats that have been cared for by Dr. Diane Eigner and her staff over the last 15 years. I would go to no one else..Diane is fantatsic and is very attentive to concerns and needs. She will email me with answers to questions while she is on vacation! She also will leave her cell phone to call if there are concerns. I would highly recommend and have Dr. Eigner to anyone who truly wants world class care.

This vet charges at least twice and often three times what any other vet in the city charges. I have been going there for years, only because of Dr. Andeer but Dr. Eigner misdiagnosed my cat and almost cost him his life and let me pay nearly 2,000 dollars for the pleasure. Even if you call to get a quote on a price your bill will almost always end up being approximately 50% more than what they told you even for what you think is a simple straightforward thing.
Oh and by the way, for expressing my opnion about this vet;s office where I had been bringing my cats to for several years she "fires" me. She does this to every client who has an issue with her or her office staff. It's a shame. I don't see how anyone can stand Dr. Eigner, and she doesn't seem to care about cats to me. After all she is keeping my cats away from a good and caring ve,t Dr. Andeer. Again, it is all about the money, and obviously about her pride. Hopefully Dr. Andeer will get her own practice.

Pros: Dr. Andeer is a kind and gentle vet and seems to be a very nice person

Cons: The office staff is terrible, and this vet;s office is money hungry greedy and decietful in billing practices

.

Dr. Eigner may have a lot of experience but she has absolutely no people skills. I have to tell you I am not terribly impressed with her vet skills either. She misdiagnosed my cat ( not listening to me tell her I felt his condition was caused by a botched pprocedure done at her office) and cost me nearly 2,000 dollars in unnessisary treatment for the wrong ailment. When it was proven by Dr. Andeer that I was rigt all along, and my cat was dying from a botched dental cleaning done at that office they would not refund my money. On a regular basis this is the most expensive cat vet you can find. They charge double and often triple what another vet charges and they are deceptive about how much things will actually cost. I have never had a bill from them anywhere close to what they claim it will be going in.

I've been using the cat doctor since I moved to the area. I usually see Dr. Andeer and she's great. She's even gone so far as to reply to my e-mails on her day off. It is a little bit pricey, but it's to be expected for specialty practice. I hear that the SPCAs clinic is cheap...

It seems like there is someone who's really really pissed off at the cat doctor and posting anonymously about weird things like the doctor's hair...odd Maybe you should just contact them and work out whatever problem you have. I felt a little bit like a bad cat mom when I first read all these reviews. I've made up my own mind though, and I like this place.

The office is clean and well kept, the office cats are sweet, and the front desk staff is really nice. Last time I was there for an appointment, I had to wait a while because the doctor was dealing with an emergency. One of the techs (forget her name...the one with a lot of tattoos) kept me updated on the wait time and gave my kitty a free toy. They were very apologetic and offered to reschedule me but I decided to wait...after all I would want them to give that attention to my cat in an emergency.

After my older cat passed away, I got a card that had been signed by everyone there, with little personal messages. It's nice to know that there are people who really care.

I would recommend them any day.

I don't think "vet's hair touching my cat" qualifies as "conceited" or "rude." Have you ever noticed that your cat is covered in hair already? Sheesh. There sure are some strange, angry people commenting on here...

Anyway, as for VCA--the care costs just as much as the Cat Doctor, but the place is corporate-run, so they try to sell you extras. I'd much prefer taking my cat to a woman-owned small business than a corporate place. Not to mention that I think the medicine is far better at the Cat Doctor.

I have been a client here for over 20 years. I used to go to a cat and dog vet and the difference is amazing. I have gone through some sad times with my kitties here as well as some happy new kitten times. They always try to get you an answer...not just throw a bunch of drugs at your kitty. Definitely the place to go if you want real answers and not just a quick temporary fix....Dr Eigner is a true professional and with the addition of Dr Andeer in the last few years this place has become the ONLY place I will take my cat

I don't know what some of these people are saying (sounds like they are getting a little personal). I know it isn't the cheapest vet around but I wouldn't want to take my mom to the cheapest doctor around either! The staff is nice, obviously enjoy working there and they are so good with kitties that are sometimes a little difficult (my cat can be a terror). The vets are caring and really know their stuff. They took a lot of time with me and answered all my questions.

I have never had such a pleasent experience...my kitty was super sick and I had been to another vet who just gave me some kind of pill (I think it was an antibiotic) and told me he would get better. He didn't. I heard about the Cat Doctor from a friend and took him here. I tend to forget a lot of stuff when I go to the doctor so it is nice they give you a written summary of everything....they did do a number of tests but were able to figure out what was wrong and my cat is back to his annoying self! Everyone there was willing to help me...and I could even email my vet and she would help reduce my anxiety about all my concerns! I am moving away soon and will be so sad to leave my vet.....

I have 5 cats ( I know, I am a sucker for strays ) and have been going to the cat doctor for years. To be honest I don't know why. They are the rudest and most expensive cat vets I have ever come across. They lie about thier prices. The price they quote you on the pnone is nowhere near the price you will pay. Today I took my cat in for his monthly asthma shot which was quoted to me as being 35.00 which was already twice as much as the shot was costing me to get it for him in Los Angeles, but I was desperate so I took it. I ended up paying 90.00 in ridiculous exam fees whch included weighing him and feeling his body. They didn't even take his temperature! 90 dollars! When I complained they were rude and dismissive and did the classic "well who did you speak to?" act. Like I was making up the price they quouted! DO NOT EVER GOT TO THIS VET unless you just want to waste all of your money. Also they forever damaged and damn near killed one of my cats with a botched teeth cleaning causing an infection in his skull bones which cost another 3,000 dolars to diagnose after trying to tell me he had stomache cancer when he refused to eat for weeks after they did thier Marquis De Sade cleaning.
Well it has been months since my post and while they have had no problem taking my money but because I was honest in this forum Dr. Eigner just called to tell me that she and "her entire staff" are not comfortable taking care of my cats so basically they left a cat who is still mid-treatment for an ongoing problem stranded without a vet. This mind you was while I was being lied to by the office staff telling me they were going to get my cats medication refilled. I was calling for over a week but apparently they were just shinning me on waiting for me to get the letter that Dr. Eigner says she sent. So meanwhile my cat went without his needed medication for a week. I did finally get a refill before finding out they had "fired"me. The funny thing is the smug tone of voice Dr. Eigner used when telling me my cats were no longer welcome there "due to your posting vicious reviews on the internet " Does she think she is hurting me? If she is hurting anyone she is hurting my cats by keeping them away from thier good vet Dr. Andeer. Strange, she's suppossed to care about ctas, isn't she. The only way Dr. Eigner hurts people is in thier bank accounts. Well, that and the incredibly rude and condescending way she speaks to the people who bring thier cats to her for help. Of course I guess she figures when she gets rid of people who disagree with her and her absurdly high prices she can cost them money one last time by making them have to pay all over again for inital exams by a new vet. My cats didn't hurt her feelings, I did. So she will find a way to make me pay ( and others like me ) instead of being a proffessional and maybe taking heed to some of the criticism from her clients ( present and former ).
Dr. Andeer is a fabulous vet who I like very much and truly hope she gets her own practice or finds another one.

I've been a client at the Cat Doctor for going on four years, and I would never take my animals anywhere else. I personally have three cats of my own, but I also use the Cat Doctor for rescued animals that I adopt out. I have taken cats to the Cat Doctor for just about everything--spay/neuter, allergy, toxoplasmosis, nerve damage, bacterial infections, parasites, eye surgery, dentals, and exploratory surgery to name a few!

The three veterinarians are all knowledgeable and experienced, though most of my experience has been with Dr. Andeer. One of my cats is an "ingestor" who loves eating string, resulting in two emergency exploratory surgeries in the past three years. Dr. Andeer agreed to see my cat very late on a Friday afternoon to prevent a more expensive and stressful trip to UPenn, and she did a fantastic job on both surgeries. She is personable, treats clients with respect, and stays up-to-date with the latest treatments and information.

Likewise, the staff is also knowledgeable and helpful. Several of the vet techs have been in the business for 10+ years and it shows. Thanks to my ingestor cat, I have gotten to know the vets and the staff well, and I am always treated with courtesy and respect as a returning customer.

While there are certainly cheaper places to take your animals, the Cat Doctor is well worth the extra bucks to know my cat is getting the most comprehensive care possible. As an active member of the rescue community, I have used other vets around the city, and I can say from personal experience that the Cat Doctor is money well spent.

I routinely recommend the Cat Doctor to everyone and anyone looking for a cat-only vet in the Philadelphia area--they are simply the best.

I realize people need to be concerned about money, but what is really important about The Cat Doctor is that they really care for cats like cats are family members. I would never take my cats anywhere else and I've been taking my cats there for over 20 years.

Some 20 years ago, my 3 year old cat suddenly lost all fur on his head and upper neck, appearing like a newborn bird. I suspected it was chemical poisoning because I lived near a small chemical plant with lax rules in my neighborhood. I took my cat to see Dr Eigner, who was then head of Cat Doctor on South 22nd Street. I agreed to what I thought would be helpful testing. When I received a call from them, they quoted a bill for over $135! Since I was out of work at the time, I was really upset. Dr Eigner's manner on the phone was unforgivable, never suggesting a payment arrangement, nor any kind of workable solution. She treated me as with complete disdain. We got into a wrangle on the phone and I told her to keep her tests. Some months later, my cat began to develop fur again. I never found out why he lost it in the first place. I never returned.

Dr. Eigner is a great surgeon, but the compassion at the Cat Doctor is nonexistant. Front office staff, especially the receptionist Chase, is quite rude and uncaring. He/she??? stood behind the counter chatting with other employees about what bar he/she??? had gone to the night before while I sat in the waiting room with my dying cat. I was obviously upset and anxious and when I asked how long it would be, he/she??? rudely said to me "I told you we weren't an emergency clinic. You should have gone to U of P." Dr. Eigner had been my cat's doctor for years and had been in her care since the onset of his disease. I expected better treatment of my cat and myself. I did leave and go to U of P, and then to another vet. I've never been contacted since by anyone at the Cat Doctor.

PROS: Dr. Eigner's surgical experience
CONS: Rudeness of Chase and some other front office staff; money over health

Will not allow cats to be taken home after surgery but do not monitor them for a full 12 hours. No great suprise that my cat was found dead in his cage the next morning. Terrible at keeping up on vacination records.Acted as if the surgery was no big deal. Gave cat a reportedly very controversial pain med that may have contributed to death. Also, still had to pay for surgery which cost several hundred dollars.Vet did cover cremation costs at $200 and prior surgery by owner seemed adequate. Previously tried to bring cat in for emergancy but staff said they were too busy with boarders.

PROS: owner/vet is excellent surgeon and usually thorough
CONS: abrasive manner by some staff/ see above/ expensive

While their medical care is fine, I had a very bad experience with their front office staff. I brought my cat in to board while I went out of town for the holidays. I brought along a record of my cat's shots but no one wanted to see it. Then, on my way to the airport, I get a call on my cell that they need proof of my cat's vaccinations immediately or else I would have pay to have my cat re-vaccinated. When I explained that the cat had her shots but I wasn't able to get them the paperwork as I was about to board a plane, they said I would have to have someone come and pick up my cat! Without any other options, I agree to pay for a basic vaccination. Upon my return, I was charged not only for the vaccine my cat didn't need in the first place but also for an expensive "exam". It took weeks of hassling for them to reverse the charge. I would never go back.

A bit of a mixed review. The staff here are really great, but sometimes overreach in terms of what the customer may want. Our cat was found to have a heart murmur by the very and they recomended an echocardiogram. This is probably a 500$ test. We did not feel that open heart surgery was an option for our cat.. so we declined to have this test performed. BTW, Cat is doing well 3 years old

PROS: Friendly and thorough
CONS:
