Great variety of pizzas and decently priced. You could easily split a med pizza between two people. The polenta bread pizza appetizer thing IS delicious. It was my favorite thing.

This is a good inexpensive option for dinner in center city. It's an easy walk to Rittenhouse, and the menu lends itself to sharing with your dining companions. Even the salads are large enough for 2.

Overall, I liked this place, the atmosphere was good for a small local pizza place, the waiter was nice enough, quick and correct. The food and price was right, the menu was big enough. It's exactly what it claims to be, a low key, byob

I was meeting a rather large group of people (~15) to eat dinner and as soon as I stepped foot in the door the owner began complaining to me about the number of people in our group. Although I never spoke to him on the phone before I came and tried to be reasonable with him, he yelled at me for telling him the incorrect number. He assumed I was the one who called. Then, he refused to sit me, and when I asked to be seated at another table which was unoccupied at the restaurant, he proceeded to verbally berate me, culminating in him shouting, "I'm the owner of the restaurant, I make the rules, I don't need your business, get the f@&k out of here!" I have never been treated this way before in any restaurant and this is unacceptable. The way the owner treated his patrons was disrespectful and upsetting. I will never step foot in this establishment again and I was completely taken aback by the experience. The rest of my group feels the same way.

The owner was horrible! On my second visit, I ordered a salad and calzone. Both of which were good at the time. Because the salad is so large, I took the majority home to eat the next day. After opening the container they stored it in for me, I found a dead grasshopper on my fork underneath the lettuce leaves! Absolutely disgusting!! I called the restaurant to make the manager aware that quality control may be lacking and wound up speaking with the owner. Not only did he yell at me for calling to complain, but never apologized and actually hung up the phone on me. How can anyone eat at a restaurant where the owner cares so little about the quality of his food and nothing at all about the customer. I will never return again.

I brought my friends from out-of-town with a new baby to Mama Palma's for lunch on Friday. At first they thought it best to go for take-out for fear that the baby might be too fussy. When the pizza came and the baby was sleeping soundly, we asked if we could eat in instead, to which the response was: "This isn't going to work. We don't like the look of the box on the table. Once it's take-out it's take out." As the waiter was asking us (paying, civil customers) to leave, we could hear the proprietor shouting about us from the back room. Needless to say I was thoroughly upset and embarrassed and won't go back. I urge you to do the same.

Pros: fun

Cons: Can be busy

.

My family and I have lived in the Fitler Square neighborhood now for the better part of this decade, so dining in/ taking out from Mama Palma's has turned into a frequent, weekly routine. Oh, and this is not because it is convenient for us. This is because it truly is some of the best pizza we have ever had! The pizzas are all so well-crafted and unique. My daughters LOVE the 'polenta bread plate!' We've never had anything like it. Definitely recommend nibbling on this as you decide on the rest of the meal. Usually one of the kind owners delivers it to our table.
Sometimes it can feel a little rushed inside, but that is only because this place is small and always busy.

A fantastic family run restaurant. The two owners are wonderful, I have no idea who the Pizza Na#i is referring to, but that guy who wrote the review below must have had a stick up his a$$. Mama Palma's serves superb, unique pizza dishes and while it does get busy, that's only because it is so good. If you like delicious pizza, tasty salads, a great selection of beer, and a fun wait staff, this place is the cream of the crop.

Update 8/14/09: Since my post, two posts followed fitting the pattern observed by past posters who pointed that it is the owner(s) making these "beautiful person" recommendations and "shame on you" statements. How lame! You aren't fooling anyone, owner in disguise. Looking back in past years shows similar posts by customers being rushed out. There are only so many people willing to shell out for overpriced pizza and beer and getting an attitude back. Make it a good run!

My original post:

I now know the inspiration for Seinfeld's "Soup Na#i". Not permitted to type the intended word. I went there for my birthday because we heard it had good pizza and beer. We order a $21 large pizza, and a couple of $7 Paulaners, both prices were too high. My wife and I finish the pizza and it turns out we are still hungry so we ask to see the menu to order a salad and more beer. The server told us that we could only order take-out as they have people waiting on the table. I insist on ordering, stating I did not know the pizza would not fill us up. The owner then comes over and again tells us the policy for ordering additional food, but that this time only she will let us order. My wife is from Japan and immediately says, "Let??s go", because in Japan a customer would never, ever be spoken to this way, where they are treated like kings. Annoyed, I tell the owner that we're done and she just lost a customer for life and she responds "don't you dismiss me, I'm the owner". I give it right back, telling her, among other things, it must be a good problem to be able to tell a customer willing to pay more money to leave. I mean for all she knows we might have ordered two more overpriced pizzas and beer. I expect this attitude in New York City, probably where she is from. Therefore, the bottom line is you need to order all of your food in advance and do not dare speak your mind to the Pizza Na#i, they are too concerned with turning over tables. They are doing you the favor by serving you, just like the Soup Na#i. In addition, judging from many previous posts, the owner and staff treat others this way. Go around the block to Gusto on 22nd Street: it is better pizza, it is reasonably priced and more importantly, the owner appreciates your business.

A group of friends and I recently tried Mama Palma and will never go back even though we live on the same block. The pizza was good, but that's about it. The server was extremely rude and judgemental right away. They also fail to define their definition of BYOB, ie they serve beer, so therefore they only 'open' wine; you cannot bring beer. The waitress very rude when explaining this after she saw we brought beer. Also, the owner at the counter does not deserve to be in this country, nevermind own a somewhat thriving business. He is the most miserable, mean-spirited, ungrateful and frankly cruel person I've ever seen. He went so far as to make fun of one of the girls I was eating with, and got the rest of the wait staff to join in. They thought they were being discrete, but were anything but. I used to be a waitress in college and have high respect for service people and usually give them the benefit of the doubt because I can relate to having a bad night, etc. 18% gratuity was added to our bill (which is highly insulting unless it's a large party) and of course we did not leave any extra after the experience we had. They had no idea that we are usually very generous tippers. Please spread this word - the owner of this place does not deserve to stay in business!

I love the pizza here. The crust is fantastic (try the whole wheat) and they have combos for the simple standard pizza lover and the gourmet. The stromboli are great, as well as the pasta dishes. I have never had a bad meal here. The servers are friendly and remember the regulars.

I'm just shocked by the reviews about the owner and staff being rude. I have been to this restaurant at least once a month int he last two years and have always received stellar service. I can only assume someone has a personal gripe with the owner and is using the reviews as a way to get even. It took me months to figure out who the owner actually was, I wonder how they all knew so quickly?

Pros: great pizza, best staff

Cons: Can be crowded

.

Our favorite spot doesn't need reviews.........in fact, it gets too crowded anyway, so please go to Pizza Hut. What's funny are the negative reviews......."I want a free polenta, my child wants a different taffy, can I sit at the head of the table, in the aisle, blocking everything............I'm a sacred prophet in my country."
Thankfully, the negative reviewers will never come back...which leaves more great salads, pizza and room for me to enjoy. I wish a few others would stay away too. BTW, Renato is terrific.

Pros: Mama, Renato, Brun, Big Steve, Lil Steve, Dave, The Boys

Cons: arrogant customers with wild screaming kids

The owner is just the worst guy you'll ever want to meet. He's disgusting, abusive. Mean spirited. This is not a place for families to go. I think the owner is just awful. Really mean for no reason to his customers. I stopped going just because of him.

I'd heard about Mama Palma's from coworkers, citing it as a great place to go after a day out on the Schuylkill Trail, or just for great pizza. Pizza in Philly has not impressed me thus far, but I was quite happy with this restaurant. The pizza was thin crust, and they had all sorts of different meats and vegetables available. My table split a Greek salad, whcih was one of the best looking Greek salads I've seen in a while, and a medium and small pizza. I'm headed back there this weekend. Definitely check it out!

Horrible experience, truly shameful behavior on the part of the manager or whoever the rude, portly man is who supervises the place on saturday nights. This guy is in the wrong line of work and needs some anger management classes. Trust me, the food isn't that special so don't schlep over there. For those of you who are loyal to this place, I would recommend only getting take out from now on because its only a matter of time before this guy virtually kicks you out for staying too long or for wanting to keep your sleeping child in his stroller or for just glancing over at him. Seriously, that guy creeps me out.

For those of you who are loyal to this place, I would recommend only getting take out from now on because its only a matter of time before this guy virtually kicks you out for staying too long or for wanting to keep your sleeping child in his stroller or for just glancing over at him. Seriously, that guy creeps me out.

Pros: prompt seating

Cons: temper of the manager/owner, overall worst service that I have ever experienced

.

I never write reviews but feel compelled after reading the negative posts about Mama Palma. We have dined here on several occasions with a small baby and have had nothing but a positive experience. The staff was more than happy to accomodate the baby and the service was great. We never felt rushed and the food is excellent!!!!

Find your favorite at Mama Palmas and there are plenty to choose from. The mozarella w/ prosciutto and pistachio is to die for. Its a great BYOB, crispy crust inventive pizzas and unfortunately rude service. All is forgiven with the service, because the food is so good!

I've been a customer of Mama Palma's since 1998! Since then I have introduced the restaurant to many fmaily and friends and they all love it as well. The pizza is terrific, standard pies as well as exotic toppings on a perfectly thin crispy crust... You can't find gourmet pizza better anywhere else in the city. My favorite is the sun-dried tomato and mascarpone pizza!!!! I just tried the pasta after all these years and it was excellent as well.

The staff is always very nice and the owner is as well, often delivering their famous polenta bread to our table "on the house". The beer selection always includes a few great choices, or you are welcome to bring your own bottle (of wine, not liquor) to enjoy with your meal. Our niece also has food allergies and the staff is always very accommodating to our needs!

We really love this place! Don't listen to all the negative comments....

I have never written a review before but this place was awful. We get there and expected to wait a few minutes but it was so crowded they were like "lets have you wait somewhere else so you aren't clogging up the place". So we're sitting in these cramped benches in the back of the restaurant across from the bathrooms. The poor busboy can't even get by us he keeps knocking into us. We wait for almost 45 minutes...no one even came to check on us, offer us a menu or anything. My friend went over once just to find out the wait and the guy was like "sheesh hold on buddy i'm doing something" and was very rude. The rest of the night, this owner/manager guy was shooting my friend dirty looks. After waiting 45 minutes or so we finally got a table next to the door. It was freezing cold and very cramped with people waiting inches away from us for tables. Their website said BYOB so my friends brought some drinks with them which were abruptly taken from them by the manager who told us we could only have wine or could buy drinks there. The pizza was pretty good but very expensive. We were rushed to leave and our plates were being taken from us before we were done. We were about to use a credit card and they said they didn't except credit cards and we had to use the ATM. Who the heck doesn't except credit cards anymore?! The service was very rude and that owner should not be in charge of a restaurant. As a hospitality management major in college, I was appalled by this restaurant and how rude the manager was. Running a restaurant isn't easy but there was no excuse for this manager's behavior. If you're looking for a friendly, hospitable waitstaff then I highly suggest another restaurant. Would not recommend this place to anyone.

Pros: pretty good pizza

Cons: very rude manager, unfriendly waitstaff, very cramped

Their pizza has nice crust and good toppings. In fact their are so many toppings that it is hard to choose. They also have a few good appetizers. Salads are good too - just a little too much dressing for my tastes. Very popular in the early dinner hour for families.

Pros: It's burned down

Cons: They reopened.

Never fails that when someone writes a very detailed horror story about this place, a cheerful, glowing review by a person who has never reviewed anything else gets posted that calls all the bad reviewers crazy and tells them good riddance (thus sounding a lot like the lousy owners described in the bad reviews). Obviously the owner is doing it so when someone comes to the webpage, there's a good review on top.

I've been to one to many pizzeria's in my time, i find the service good when the woman owner is there the male owner is a nice man and also generous but strict with the upkeep of his restaurant. every time i go there i always get something on the house, the pasta's are delicious and they give very large portions. the salads are fresh and also large, and this is all because they care about this business. i would recommend this place to any one who loves pizza!!

Nothing special. Pizza was too small for the price. Had to get cash from the ATM which charged an excessive fee. Place was too cramped.
