Wanted to adopt a dog. Another rescue found what I was looking for at PAL and let me know I'd have to go out to Petsmart, and complete their application. They did forewarn me that Barb is well know for not being the most balanced director, but I truly thought they were upset because I was adopting from PAL and not them...I wish I had listened. Would have saved me a good month or mor of heartache and anger.

Went to see them at Petsmart met some of the volunteers who seemed normal and nice and pleasant. Then I met Barb. Okay, she seemed gruff, but not too bad...I thought...

I completed the application and we talked a bit. A VERY gruff angry woman. She insisted I go out to the Yukon Shelter (which that first time we went was a mud pit with dog feces all of the front entrance. Everywhere you stepped it was there). Seems the shelter is built and located at her home but I didn't ask questions about that.

So I stop there and visit the dog several times because Barb wasn't there the first 3 times I went as requested, (even when I called and told her i was coming). No one else will interview me for the the dog I've now fallen in love with, because no one else apparently has enough common sense to ask the questions and write down the answers... NO ONE..really? Hmmmm, can we say CONTROLLING?

FINALLY on my 4th try she is there and I go through this interrogation...er interview. I get out of that feeling like I was just in Church being told I was going to burn in the fires of hell if I dared to Crate train my dog. She doesn't believe in crate training AT ALL, even if it's just to house break a dog, and insists that its cruel... she will deny you solely on the basis that you try to enlighten her to the 21st century theories in dog training. She's definitely not a trainer.

None the less I passed her interrog... I MEAN interview and she tells me I can adopt my baby. BUT for SOME reason I can't do it that day.. after nearly 2 weeks now... I have to WAIT yet another few days and I arrange to meet her at her normal Petsmart location on the day they are there.

I was SOOO excited! We went and bought all the puppy stuff we'd need including gates, and set up a vet appointment for my new baby. This puppy was everything I was looking for for the last several months of searching. I'd been patient and waited and finally found the perfect pup!

I drive ALL the way to Greensburg on the appointed day, run up to the ratty red and white PAL gypsy trailer and excitedly say "hi" and ask where my baby is. At first Barb acted like she didn't know me. Then as I got a bit upset and reminded her of who I was and what dog I was adopting today... this NASTY, past her time to retire, WITCH told me that she "just" adopted out my dog and sent it home with someone else ... and when asked why.. she said because they were approved and showed up on time, and she didn't know if i was coming. I WASN'T LATE. We didn't set an appointment, she didn't call me before she did this to see if I was on my way, and this from the woman that made ME wait TWO WEEKS? Truthfully I think she's either going insane or someone offered her money money.

I'm sure if I wanted to push the issue, and aside from it being irresponsible and immoral, she surely broke some sort of law there... lets say um... Egregious breach of an agreement? But after being berated a few more minutes after trying to get her to explain why she would do that and trying very hard not to strangle this...human being.. I went home and cried.

A few weeks later, after much debate on whether to just find a breeder or try rescue and hope they all aren't that off their nut, I warily, but am currently in the process of successfully adopting a different dog from another rescue group. But I'll never forget the dog I loved and lost and the heart ache this awful place caused me and think they should be investigated.

I would like to say that if weren't for Barb and her crew at Yukon PALS I would have never found my forever friend Joey. I was searching for a puppy 6 months after i lost my Toby to a age and illness. I seen a tri colored puppy on the PALS pet finder site and fell in love with this pup. I went to pet smart on a friday and had my puppy on the following Monday. I have had Joey for 1 year and without PALS and Barb I would have never found him. Please understand you have to understand Barb, she is a sweet person. Barb is a person who truly cares about the pets that are sheltered at PALS. She wants what is best for them and if that means a detailed back ground check than so be it. She wants the pets to go to good homes and to be loved. I know she can be abrubt, but she is also the kind person i see when i take Joey to visit at Greensburgh Pet smart . Barb always when not busy takes the time to say hello and visit with my Joey. I was at the shelter when i picked up Joey and it was extreamly full. Anyone who has a problem with Barbs attitude at times needs to take a step back and realize that the main concern is the pets and their well being. I thank God everyday for Pals, Barb and my Joey. Joey is my best friend, my baby boy and if it wasn't for PALS i would have never found him. Take a look around of all the abuse of animals and think about where these pets would be without the care and support of the local shelters who care for them until they are adopted and loved unconditionaly. keep up the good work Barb, Joey loves you always :)

I found a dog at Petsmart in Greensburg and was told (by the volunteers) that I was approved and better take her now because she will be adopted soon. After explaining I would pick the dog up the next morning after I had bought food and a crate etc, they told me ok.
I called the next morning to inform them I was on my way only to be yelled at by Barb the DIRECTOR (she stated this fact about 10 times in a 2 min conversation) that only she could approve an application and she did not and I could not pick up the dog. I let her know I was on my way and we could discuss. After a 20 minute grilling from BARB about how crate training was inhumane and how would I like to be locked in a crate for 8 hours, and that should expect "poop and pee" throughout my home, she told me should would call me the next day. 2 days passed before I received a call to let me know I was approved. After telling her I had found another dog and wasn't interested any longer, she called my voice mail at WORK and told me that she was glad because she didnt like me anyway??? REALLY? I went to Yukon shelter with such love in my heart to give to a puppy mill adult dog only to be yelled at? NO SOCIAL SKILLS! I think she works with animals because she can yell at them all day with no recourse. I highly recommend the Latrobe Shelter! They are all very nice, helpful and they all have SOCIAL SKILLS!

I had the most horrible experience with this shelter. I first found out about them when I went to Petsmary and they had volunteers with many dogs there. I wanted to adopt a dog and after filling out the application and it was reviewed by one of the volunteers she approved the application. I wasn't able to take the dog home that day so she made arrangements (I thought) to have me go to the shelter the next day. I arrived the next day and the Director Barb was at the desk. She could not have been more rude to me. She told me that my application was NOT approved and that I would NOT be taking the dog home that day. Her tone of voice was extremely rude and condescending. I ended up leaving and decided to adopt from another source. It is a shame because I would have given the dog a loving home and now I have such a bad taste in my mouth I would never recommend the shelter to another person.

I recently adopted 2 husky-mix puppies from PAL in Yukon, Pa. This was one of the cleanest shelters I have ever seen! I traveled almost 2 hours to get there and it was worth the drive. Barb was so great, great to respond to my e-mails and questions and made our adoption process very enjoyable!!!

They are the best!I agree with Traci C., Doesn't look like much but they are the greatest: Barbara, Beverly and all of their volunteers. We got 2 little toy-poodle mix-mutts from them (a year or 2 apart).Kinky, the first one had special needs, physical and mental, but now he is just fine and a really great, loyal and loving companion. A little while later they called us because they had found Phoebe who looked a lot like Kinky; could be his sister! She is so sweet and just the greatest addition to the family. Kinky, now legally blind, uses her for a seeing-eye-dog. Both provide great loving therapy for my elderly parents, mostly my Mom, a mutual admiration society goes on there! I cannot ever go out of the house without them. They insist going along for the ride in the car. We wouldn't miss our daily walks with their best friend, Cody (a Jack Russell terrior). Together they become great hunters through the woods (although they have never come back with anything but a dead cardinal)! I love them both so much. Thank you. A+. They could always use $money$, pet food and blankets.

I have gotten 2 cats from here in the past 12 yrs. Both were males that were strays. Michelle is tough and the place is cramped and in need on volunteers. Both cats quickly became part of the family.

PAL can always use donated pet food and kitty litter.
