I love stopping by this place on my way out for the evening. Great way to start off or end a night out. Food is tasty and the bartenders have personality- old school and elegant. One of my fave non pretentious places on the Square.

$80 (including tip) for a meal that I could get at Outback or Texas Steakhouses for 1/4 of the price (and Outback and Texas have better steaks!). I could somewhat rationalize the prize if the food was amazing, but it isn't. My steak was burned both times I went and the sides were no better than Boston Market! I can't believe this restaurant is so popular. I guess some people have more money than they know what to do with.

Do yourself (and your wallet) a favor and skip this one.

Cons: Heavily overpriced, food only so-so

I attended a rehearsal dinner here. The service was outstanding, and the food was terrific. The waiter kept our wine glasses full. For a group of 35, the timing of the dishes was amazing - everyone was served at the same time, and the food was hot. They've got large group service down pat.

not that good. ive been to le bec , Capital grill, striped bass, ect , ect and know the difference from good dining and great dining. Smith and Wollensky's wasnt living up to the hype i thought it would. i didnt have the steak and know its known as a steak house, but they can put a little more effort in their seafood. Calamari was good, my bass was dry . prices were too high for such mediocer food and having to pay extra for a side dish is just dumb. good selection of wine though.

This steak house certainly earns it's reputation as one of the best places to dine in the country. You will certainly pay for the experience, though. Their location here, just off Rittenhouse Square is great area to take in Philadelphia's history by foot.

I chose this place to celebrate an anniversary with my boyfriend. First appearance was awesome, the host and hostess were very friendly. They led us upstairs to our table which was very charming, small, but charming. Our server Brian came over the second we sat down and asked us what we wanted to drink as if he was trying to rush us out. We were the youngest couple in the restaurant. After we placed our order it was as if he disappeared, his serving assistant was awesome making sure everything was going well, getting us our drink refills and replenishing us with our silverware. We had a large crab cake to start which was very tasty and filled with tons of crabmeat and not just filler ingredients. The Caesar salad is HUGE so definitely split it. The filet I ordered was really amazing, really really big, cooked to perfection and seasoned just perfectly... definitely worth the 40$. The only downside to the food was that it wasn't piping hot, just warm. Our server took forever to bring us our check, cashing out everyone around us except us and then finally gave us our bill. All in all this was a good place for a romantic date. The dress code was casual we dressed up a bit but I saw people in jeans. You really can't go here and spend less then 200$ including the tip so be prepared.

This place is a toilet. They got my order wrong and overcooked my colleagues steak. Instead of getting me a new stake the wiped the dressing off, flipped it over and hoped I wouldn't notice.

So, I went to Smith & Wollensky during Restaurant Week, thinking that if the food was as good as everyone says, than I'd be more than happy to pay full price. Well, not only will I never pay full price, I will tell everyone I know how horrible the food was. I'm not sure why they even participate in Restaurant Week; it seemed as if it was a bother to them to do so. From the salad to the cheesecake, the food was less than mediocre. Three of us got filet and two got crab cakes. The filet was almost impossible to swallow and the crab cakes were dry and had no flavor at all. They were all served with overdone, dried out roasted potatoes and steamed, totally flavorless broccoli. Earlier in the week I had gone to Plough and The Stars where the RW menu had several mouth watering choices (S&W only offered filet, salmon or crab cakes, again, why bother?). The sirloin steak with blue cheese butter at the Plough was melt in your mouth good and the service was outstanding. At Smith & Wollensky I got the distinct impression that they did not really care too much about my food because I was not paying full price. It was insulting.

The best steak and seafood we have had in the city. Love this place and especially the bar crowd. I suggest the filet with crabmeat.

That is the way the steak arrived...DOA. As we had theater tickets, there was not time for them to do it over. I should have asked for the doggie bag before the meat was cooked. The Caesar salad lacked Ingredients: anchovies, capers and egg yolks and who knows what else. It did have Croutons the size of meatballs. No problem I just used the Jim Bowie knife they gave me for meat. We ordered one of the two bottles of red that were under $50. It turned out they were sold out of both. The $56.00 bottle was my $18. favorite from home. (Both bottles did appear on the bill since they were ordered. That charge was removed later.)
So I asked for beer, well, nothing on tap, the six different beers were 50% Bud. and Lite types plus Heineken. The dessert was great. Which left me with a good taste in my mouth as I left, until I got to the attached parking garage. At least they admitted to over charging and corrected the bill.
So if you are a Bud. drinker that likes well done steak and a salad with Italian desssing and a great dessert by all means go.

found S&W on CitySearch. i normally go to places that are 9.0 or higher. this rule of thumb paid off. my only complaint was that the portion of the appetizers and salads are far too large to have both. choose one or the other. having both will only lead to discomfort later. several of my companions were not satisfied fully with their filet, but my ribeye was excellent.

there were 10 of us in my party. the waiter was good natured. there is a fine line that can be easily crossed between patron and server, and our server was balanced in all aspects, despite the highly roudy crowd. we started with a seafood appetizer. one of my companions simply agreed to what our server had listed. prawns, various oysters, lobster tail, crab chunk, and calamari soon arrived. we had two of them, and it was nearly too much for 10 people. the variety of sauces was a welcome addition (hot, cold, spice, tasty).

not everyone ordered a salad. for those of us who did, we could have stopped there. the caesar salad was fantastic. i prefer anchovies on the side, but it was not available. they were in the dressing providing the saltiness required. one of my companions had a salad that contained HUGE pieces of bacon in it...delicious.

my medium-cooked bone-in ribeye was delicious (oscar style). i heard grumblings from my companions regarding their sirloins and filets. the complaint about the filet was that it was over-charred on the outside. the complaint about the sirloin was the prevalent dryness.

overall, this was a pleason dining experience for me. i would skip the filet and sirloin and always opt for the ribeye.

We had heard good things about this restaurant and were excited when we got reservations for a Friday evening. Even with reservations, we were not promply seated. Ordered prime rib (rare) and it came medium and dryand the potatoe for the side dish was nothing to write home about. Service was very slow (not a crowded night) and my water glass was NEVER filled!

On a recent vacation to Philly I took my family to S&W's. My New York Strip was large and tasty. My wife loved the lobster and our waiter helped her decide on which one, he was very knowledgeable. Even my seven year old son enjoyed the doting service of the wait staff and loved the food. My only negative is that the portion of the creamed spinach was on the small side, though VERY good.

I first was here when I took my girlfriend out for her birthday. I had the best margarita on the rocks that I've ever had. And the steak was perfect. Seated at an upstairs window to overlook Rittenhouse square was great. The servers were quick and courteous. A good time all around. The noise level was good for a date, easy to talk, but not dead either.

A wonderful dining experience. When I traveled to Philly, I always wanted to eat at Smith and Wollensky. They serve great martinis and the atmosphere is cozy and intimate in the bar restaurant. The food was always prepared perfectly and the steaks are great. I rate it above the Palm, Ruth's Chris, and Mortons-too stuffy and pricey. I miss Smith and Wollensky's now that I am not visiting Philadelphia any more. Bring one to Nashville, please.

WELL WORTH IT Dined here with my husband last night . EXCELLENT Service was amazing. Top Notch. Only steakhouse ive been to that provides such wonderful service. On top of you but not overbearing. Marcello and his partner are great. A classic steakhouse waiter. Profesionaljust like the rest of the place. From our initial greeting thru our meal and drinks at the bar afterwards. This has become our Philly Favorite. Great View too.

FABULOUS... highly recommend!! My husband and I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who likes to be treated exceptionally, who enjoys the best steak there is to offer, and without the feeling of pretentiousness. We requested a window seat (which we highly recommend for the view) which we did receive, along with a glass of complimentary champagne for each of us because it was our anniversary. What a surprise! The service was amazing (by Stephen and Glen) and not rushed. And the food... we just can't say enough positive things about it... wonderful appetizers, big portions, great cuts of beef deliciously cooked to perfection, and great side dishes. Save room for dessert, which will blow you away in size and taste! We are planning to return next year for our second anniversary and hopefully many more. Our anniversary wouldn't have been the same without this experience!! Well worth it!

Tried this place for the first time. Good food and excellent service. Shellfish bouquet is a must have for seafood lovers. Plenty of specials ( a bit exspensive) Bone in Filet was the best filet Ive eaten in along time. Menu is good. Big Steaks or a burger can be had. Best view in the city , if you are lucky enough to get a window booth. Bar scene is excellent as well. Overall a good time, tad exspensive but i guess to be expected in Center City Ritenhouse area. For me worth the price.

Thursday night was not only the best dining experience I have had in a steakhouse, it was the best in any restaraunt I have ever been to. Food was incredible. Cooked superbly, service top notch! And a view that is unlike any in the city. The place was packed, it is amazing how they handle such a busy place so well. I have been to SW in NYC and this is much better. Do yourself a favor and make it a must do in Philadelphia.
