I second BK's review of Central Books. My boyfriend and I had the most bizarre experience we've ever had in a bookstore, maybe in any retail establishment. Here's what happened.

The layout of the bookstore is not one big space, but is instead broken up into several small rooms. The owner was in the front of the store and said nothing to us when we entered, which is no big deal, but then, as we moved through the various rooms, she came back to "check" on us at least three times over the course of maybe 15 minutes. Naturally we got the distinct impression that she thought we were going to steal. What finally sent us out of the store screaming was when she "checked" on us the final time, and just stood there staring at us for what seemed like an eternity and then finally barked, "Well it's clear you're not interested in buying anything so I'm gonna take my break." With that she stormed out of the room and I said, loud enough for her to hear me, "We're just browsing; isn't that what everyone does when they come into a bookstore?!" Of course I got no reply. My friend and I just looked at each other in amazement and said, "Okay, it's time to get the hell out of here; this woman needs psychiatric help."

It's clear that this woman, the owner, is more than just a bit curmudgeonly. There is something REALLY wrong with her. Stay away.

Business Response:

Hi - I am the owner of Central Books, and I want to clear up some confusion. I share the building with another used book store that is a *completely separate* business. This is understandably confusing to new customers. This reviewer was actually in the other shop--not mine. My shop is on the left side as you walk in (as well as upstairs) and specializes in recent, new-looking books. We very much welcome *all customers* including browsers and children.

Not a safe place. As a longtime customer I was shocked and a little scared when the owner approached me yesterday after I was silently looking at books for 15 minutes. She accused me of coming to the store too often, never buying books, and of taking advantage of her. The facts? I frequent the shop every 3 months, have bought over $200 in children's books in the last couple years and am a quiet and conscious shopper. A stranger overheard the whole thing and put down her books and said aloud, "well, I'm never coming here again." I love used books stores but please protect yourself and find another one. Buyer beware!!!

Central Books has very good used books and the ones I've purchased were in great condition. You can find great deals for books and they have a little bit of everything you're looking for

Central Books is a great little book shop. The books are all used and in great condition. The book prices are reasonable and they always have a great selection. The books are organized by category and author so it helps if you have a book in mind it will be easier to find

Doylestown has several nice used book shows... 2 are right next to each other. Great shopping for fiction and non-fiction. Standard used book store prices. $1 rack on the front porch.

Located in Downtown Doylestown PA. A nice walkable touristy town. Park you car and spend a day. Be sure to check out the funky Mercer Museum, an eccentric concrete castle filled with antique tools and oddities. Doylestown also features a vintage movie theater, a needlepoint shop, a quilt shop, used book stores, and little tourity home decor shopes.
