No visit to Pittsburgh is complete without a trip on the incline. As you ride up and down Mt Washington you see beautiful views of the city and the rivers. Outlooks on the top are great too!

The Incline is such a special part of Pittsburgh and is rightly merged with the identity of the City. The Incline has been around for so long. The fabulous journey takes you from top to bottom (or bottom to top) of the great hillside overlooking the city. The views from the top are wonderful (and there are also some wonderful restaurants at the top of the hill -- dinner and an incline ride make a great date!) and the ride itself is magical to young and old. Some of my earliest memories of the city are taking this fabulous ride. It is something that still excites me to do. Every native and visitor should be sure to visit this wonderful attraction.

The Duquesne incline is a unqiue attraction. It serves as transportation for locals that live in Mt. Washington and then it serves as an attraction for many tourists. The incline is about 100 years old but is well maintained and professionally operated by the Port Authority of Pittsburgh. It's less than $2 for a ride down the incline and it offers a beautiful view of the city as you ride it. There is also an outside area that you can stand on to look over the city. They have a small gift shop, but no food is permitted.

PROS: A unique attraction with great views
CONS: Parking can be inconvenient

If you have never taken a trip on an incline, you should do it before they're all gone. One of 2 in Pittsburgh (the Monongahela Incline is the other one), inclines are very rare these days. The Duquesne Incline, built in 1877, is always listed as a Pittsburgh tourist attraction, but Pittsburghers who have never ridden it should take advantage of it also. As a small child, I thought it was magical how it could go up and down the mountainside without anyone driving it. Riding it as an adult, I realize that it is a tribute to man's ingenuity, and I appreciate the ride even more. Start your trip at the bottom of the incline, and get out at the top. At the top station , there is a small museum about inclines and Pittsburgh history, a little gift shop, and a very nice observation platform to look out over Pittsburgh. Enjoy the beautiful view before riding back down.

It's a part of Pittsburgh's history! This functioning incline is one of the few, if not the last of its kind. This was the main means of transportation back in the day when the steelworkers had to get down to the mills. Today it is great fun to take a ride up to Mt. Washington and get a view of this great city! Bundle up if you go in the winter!
