I have been to all the high end steak houses and paid alot more for just Ok. Not just in Philly but in Sandiego, Dallas, New Orleans,Chicago and NY. The beef was first rate. the service was warm and on point. Just there on Friday night. Three of us for an end of week business dinner and drinks. Split the Porter House for two with a peer. AWESOME! sizzleing Hot Plate(the steak stays hot though out the meal), Great Taste and cooked perfectly(med rare). What a flavor! YUM! The potato Lyonnaise-Crispy on outside with sweet onion, Yum again. The Choclate Moose Cheese cake. to die for . really. Can't be beat in five citys I am close to. I just changed my business dinner location to Ruth's Chris for tonight. Yes That Good.

it's hard to find great service AND great food in one place, but I found it here at Ruth chris in Philadelphia on Friday. the ravioli were AMAZING and the server, mark, was so polite to my kids and even brought them extra rolls because "they're perfect for dipping it in the extra calamari sauce!". I mean how Awesome!

the drinks were stiff the food was delish and the service was on point. I'll be back!

Went there on Monday night and was able to get a table without a reservation. The food was great. Got the fillet with mushrooms and potatoes al graten. The side portions are big. Fillet was perfect.

Cocktails were pricey at $12 per drink. Paid $145 for two with no apps, just salad, 3 drinks, dinner and 1 dessert.

During January 2009's Restaurant's Week, me and a group of friends decided to experience the cuisine at this restaurant. While the staff goes through the motions of performing their duties, i.e. parking your car; hanging your coat; seating you; and taking your order, they are not as friendly and warm as we expected or have experienced at other restaurants in Center City. Don't get me wrong, they were not rude, but there was something missing from the sincerity of their words.

The food was average. Two of our guests had Salmon and both complained of it being dry.
With Philadelphia having so many fine restaurants to choose from, this is not a restaurant I will be visiting again. I was disappointed.

The most excellent service at Ruth's Chris I've been here three times and paid the price for being treated like a King. If you want high quality steaks this is the place but expect to spend at least $75 for a meal.

The staff treats you a piece of succulent Filet Mignon...very attentive.

as in food, service, and value. i have been there 10 times in the last 15 years and have had enough. TRUST ME PLEASE; even if you have to wait two hours for a table, walk across the street, head north on broad st a couple of blocks towards city hall, and go to capital grille. it will be a smart decision.

PS-i think citysearch needs to figure out how to total ratings. this dump should have a cumlative rating of two and a half or three stars, not four and a half. check it out.

My friends and I have been hearing SO much about Ruth?s Chris Steakhouse that during restaurant week in Philadelphia (Sept. 15-19), we decided to give it a try.
This place should NOT be touted as a 5 star restaurant.
Our server was RUDE and any request we made was met with a heavy sigh and a roll of the eyes.
The salad was wilted and came with ONE cherry tomato cut INTO two.
The rolls were hard and lacked flavor.
The mashed potatoes were INSTANT, and watery.
Three of us ordered steaks, and if put together, it would?ve made one normal size steak. Add to that, they were tasteless.
We asked for sauteed onions, and was charged $6.50 EXTRA - something we found out when the bill CAME. (We didn?t ask in advance because no other restaurant ever charged for that).
I could ONLY understand the unbelievably small portions we were given, if the ENTIRE menu was open to restaurant week. However, they were only featuring ONE choice from (3) salads, (3) entrees, and (2) desserts, so the portions should have been a little more generous.
There was NOTHING about this place that would bring me back. The ambience, service, food, even the spacing of the seats seem as if they put tables and chairs where people should be walking (and i?m not a large person).
However, if you want a restaurant that has it ALL - great food, service, atmosphere ? AND will leave you satisfied and wanting more? Then you want McCormick & Schmick?s. THEY ARE THE BEST.
Ruth?s Chris? AWFUL.

This is a great place, if you wish to clean out your bowels. It began with a salad,,,,ended with a severe lower ab pain and the squirts. Do not eat at a Ruths Chris, unless, you wish to pay a C note for the schitts.

I had low expectations for this restaurant after reading some of the reviews on this site, but was completely impressed! The food is just so good in comparison to other comparable restaurants in Center City. My steak was perfect - moist and smooth. I've never had a better steak even at other more expensive places (e.g. Morton's, Capital Grille, Barclay Prime, Smith and Wollensky, etc.)! Our appetizer was probably the biggest delight. Exactly as our waitress described it: a delicious seafood platter with shrimp cocktail, crab meat and ahi tuna, large enough for two people to share. Well...we got 5 enormous shrimps, 5 perfect pieces of tuna and a heaping mound of crab meat over crisp salad leaves. There was absolutely nothing to not love about this dish, especially the very spicy sauce accompanying it (both my domestic partner and I love spicy food). Upon getting our bill we discovered that this appetizer platter cost us $7. I don't recall ever paying so little for such a top-notch appetizer. In addition to the steaks we got a plate of Au Gratin potatoes (heaven!), and sauteed mushrooms (which were simply fabulous). You can go to Applebees or Red Lobster and get lousy American food or Ruth's Chris and get "sophisticated" American food. The service was outstanding, but who needs the service with the food of such hight quality??? If you've never been to any other place than your local food chain restaurant, you will be in for a treat; and if you often dine in Center City - hurry over to Ruth's Chris Steak House at all costs!

Cons: food too good. never want to leave

This restaurant is extremely expensive for the quantity of food you receive and the ambiance of the place is loud and not very romantic nor exclusive. It seemed like a chain restaurant with a slightly more upscale air about it, which is basically what it is. The food is delicious but is it worth the exorbitant prices? I don't really think so.

This review is a bit late - but I have to say, that I was very pleasantly surprised by the food at Ruth's Chris. This was my first visit to the restaurant - and I was very impressed by the professional service and attentiveness during this busy time. The salad was phenomenal, the filet mignon was served perfectly and the dessert was scrumptious. I am VERY excited to visit tomorrow night for Philadelphia's Restaurant Week Winter '08!

My family and I decided to have dinner after a concert next door. What a complete disappointment. We were greeted by a massively large maitre de (lay off the steak buddy) that made a big scene about us not having reservations even though the place was empty at 5:30. My caeser salad had a long black hair in it, which the manager apologized for, and my steak was well done on one side and rare on the other. For $35 for a piece of meat that comes with nothing else I would expect nothing less than perfection. My family was completely disgusted by the meal and the service, just a slab of fish with no presentation or a single veggie, what a rip off. It seemed our waiter would have better off at home watching football rather than snickering and making rude comments to his customers. I am warning anyone that is considering eating here: STAY AWAY!!!

we had the most excellent service while at Ruth's Chris. My husband and I ate for 3 hours through dinner and desert. The wait-staff never hurried us. The meal was expensive, but delicious. It was a great night out!

My husband and I ate at this Ruth's location (our first visit to a Ruth's) and were tremendously disappointed. To start with, we had a reservation and had to wait 45 minutes in the waiting area where we were blasted by cold winter air everytime the door opened! We figured we would try Ruth's because a family member highly recommended it. I had to wonder if they do not know what good food is or are they easily satisfied because this was by far the WORST meal I ever had. Even the baked potato was terrible. We both ordered medium and got a very rare piece of meat on a sizzling plate that spattered greese all over my clothing. I realize this is part of their "trademark experience" but I certainly don't want to have to tuck a napkin in my collar for my entire meal so that I don't ruin my clothing or other persoanl belongings like my handbag. I sent my filet back because it was practically still moving on my plate, but it was still almost unedible after I got it back. It had an awful taste and was not even tender (mind you it wasn't even tender when it was rare), plus the baked potatato tasted like it was rolled around in dirt before it was baked. We vow to NEVER, EVER return to a Ruth's nor recommend it. We knew it had to be bad when even my husband complained, as he rarely complains about any dining experience. He eats steak and filets often and this was the first time he ever said he will never return to a rastaurant. It was a very poor dining experience and a huge let down. Don't believe the hype on this place. It is not worth the time or money.

Cons: Everything- poor food quality, very pricey. Reservations don't improve wait time.

My wife and I made a special night on the 23rd. We had tickets to the Philly Pops and I made reservations at your restuarant. Let me first say the waiter we had was horrible, he was barely at our table and when he took our order it was like we were bothering him. Then we get the entre the steak was so bland i had to request A1 which I nor my wife never use. There was no flavoring at all on the steaks, the potato was excellent but after spending 200 dollars and the only thing memorable is the potato that is sad. This was our first and last stop and ruth chris!!

Unfortunately, I have to emit precisely the same criticisms on this "Restaurant" as I've read thus far. Before ordering steak in the U.S., I always make sure to ask if medium-rare means true medium-rare (warm, red center). My steak came out no less than medium-well. I was disappointed, given the pride that this restaurant claims to take in the preparation of its steaks. Go to Capital Grille, Brasserie Perrier or Morton's if you want a good cut of steak done the way you want it.

I had high expectations for this restaurant, but wasn't impressed at all! The food just isn't good enough in comparison to other restaurants in Center City. My steak was dry and tough, I've had much better steaks at other places not specializing in them! Our appetizer was probably the biggest disappointment. The waitress described it as a delicious seafood platter with shrimp cocktail, crab meat and ahi tuna, large enough for two people to share. I just went to Ruth's Chris for restaurant week and it was very, very good. It was a bit crowded and my table wasn't too great (right next to the kitchen) but I think that on an ordinary night (and at a different table) it would've been very relaxing. I had a caesar salad, petite filet with mashed potatoes, and chocolate mousse cheesecake. Everything was excellent. The dessert was the best part of the meal! I could not believe how fast our food came out. We didn't have to wait long at all, despite how crowded it was. All of the wait staff were friendly and unpretentious. Definitely a bargain meal for restaurant week!

This is the first time I have ever posted a review, but after seeing so many people complaining I had to. Everything about this place is great, I don't think I am exagerating at all. The one thing you have to remember is that you are eating at an expensive restaurant in center city Philadelphia, and your wallet is going to know it afterwards. But if this a problem, you probably shouldn't be going out to dinner in center city. I've been there twice this year and just made reservations for New Years eve, I highly recommend Ruth's Chris.

After 10 years of enjoyment, the last two visits were horrible. I am not sure if local management changed or what. but the servbice was horrible. out of 8 meals two were wrong, side were not delivered till 10 minutes after the steaks. Local manager was not helpful. very very bad. It's a shame as we visited Ruths four or five times a year over the past 10 years. Just a shame and after a letter was sent not a word from them

I don't understand the bellyaching. I think the bad reviews are coming from competitiors. Complaining that valet parking cost $14.?? I paid $16 when I parked on my own at the Kimmel Center. We had a large party 15 - everything was great...food, service etc. The prices are up there compared to some but it is dining out and in the City. Go, you'll have a good time. If you don't, tell Mr. Bacci the Mgr - he is a lovely man.

I have dined at 3 of this chains locations and the broad street location was horrible. I tipped very well to make a special occaision reservation and the service, seating and cold food was not what I expect from this franchise. They should have paid me for patronage. Ruth's Chris should be ashamed. I wouldn't return for a free meal.

I tipped very well to make a special occaision reservation and the service, seating and cold food was not what I expect from this franchise. They should have paid me for patronage. Ruth's Chris should be ashamed. I wouldn't return for a free meal.

Cons: , cold food, everything else

.

While visiting Philly for the first time last year, we were eager to eat at the 'legendary' Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. Our waitress took 20min. to get to our table, with water and glasses for 4 of 6 diners. She left for another 15 mins, came back to take our order, and still forgot water. She returned with water and 5 of 6 salads. We had to ask for the rolls included in our meal. She returned with 4 of 6 dinners, no rolls, and the final salad. The other dinners were brought 20 min after the first, and she said, "Oh, do you still want the rolls?" We had finished a full half hour when she presented us with the bill, and then asked if we wanted dessert. I've had better service at truck stops. The food was okay, but not enough to make up for the poor experience.

Pros: slightly above averag

Cons: , too pricey, smokers ruin it

Ruth's Chris USED to be great, but is no more. My 40 oz. Porterhouse for two after fat and bone was maybe 18-20 oz. Everything is WAY too expensive. There are plently of reasons why this restaurant is empty on Saturday nights. Don't waste your time or money here. I wasted $130 when I could've got a better meal at Outback for 1/5 the cost!

The steak was over-priced, over done, and the service was slow and unreactive.

I payed over $100 for dinner for two -- with no alcohol. Not a good value by any measure.

Try Morton's.

My order that day was simple: The Cowboy Ribeye (medium) with a side of Lyonnaise potatoes. The waiter described the Cowboy Ribeye as a prime rib cut of meat on the bone which is cooked like a steak. When it arrived my eyes popped out of my head as it appeared larger than life. Unfortunately, the steak was not as tender as I expected, and cutting with a knife took quite a bit of work. I was also expecting a bit more flavor from the potatoes, as I've had better at lesser priced restaurants. Overall the meal was good, but as far as price goes, Ruth's Chris is considerably overpriced for a franchised steakhouse. I'd still recommend it though you try it at least one time.

Although Ruth's Chris is touted as a great steakhouse their treatment of guests at prior to seating is inexcusable. They did not honor the reservations we made and made us, along with other customers, wait over an hour for a table. They spent the hour pushing the bar on us...do you want angry customers to be drinking as well?!

We ordered a filet, medium-rare (avg.) and petit filet, medium-well (overcooked) for entrees; caesar salad (good) and chopped salad (not so good) to start; shared a baked potato and spinach in oil and garlic (both avg.); and had the chocolate cheesecake and banana cream pie for dessert (both very good).

We came for the steak, which was a little disappointing and ordinary compared to other Ruth's Chris's that we have been to in Los Angeles. The steak served in sizzling butter did not quite hit the spot like the other restaurants in the chain have in the past. Overall, still a solid steak but we probably will not return given the number of options available to steaklovers in this neighborhood. Service was friendly, but spotty (forgot our drink orders twice).

2-13-03. Had the barbecued shrimp app--Excellent! Ruth's salad--very good. Portabello T-Bones (vegetariandish)--Excellent! Ordered filet med-rare; came out close to raw! Sent it back--came backwell done on the outside and still raw in the very middle. Quality of steak was mediocore. It seemed as though it mat have been a frozen steak! servuce was great--we were splitting(sharing) everything and the waiter obliged nicely, dividing the salad and the steak ahead of time.

We had reservations for 7:30 and were seated 25 minutes later to a table in the middle of the entrance to the dining room where people brushed by continuously. The server was more businesslike than pleasant and seemed too busy with other parties to provide us with much attention. She forgot sugar with the coffee. I looked forward to the steak and was very disappointed. My ribeye was completely well done and dried out rather than medium well and was scorched on the outside. The bill, with tip, came to $300.00 for a party of four very disappointed people!

Overpriced Ala Carte (pay for salad & veges separately) Medium well=Well ... (order medium instead) Overall=Good, but have had better for half the money (salad & veges included) 116 bucks for 2 people (no alcohol) ... 2 mini filets, 2 veges, desert, and coffee. No salad.

An excellent dining experience. Fine steaks done to perfection, a menu containing a wide variety of options, deserts to die for and terrific service.
The downtown Philly location boasts the fine service, the KofP Mall rest. needs to go there for some training. But if you're out on the town and want an intimate & delicious dinner, go here!!!

Food - Standard steakhouse fare. You don't get much for what you pay for. My George Foreman does it as well.

Ambience - Great for those who like stuffy ivy-league country clubs. Basically, you're seated at a table with a freshly ironed white cloth. Nothing to see but the walls, and your neighbors which are way too close.

Service - You should be honored to be eating there.

Price - A joke. You get a steak. You have to pay extra for mashed potatoes.

My gf and I decided to try this place out (since we both love steak). The steak lacked any taste, was dry, came by itself (everything ala carte) and the service was horrible. The House Sirloin at Appleby's is a far better steak that the unfortunate excuse for meat from Ruth Chris's. Suffice to say, I'll never eat there again.

i will make this short and sweet. ruth chris was horrible. i think it was exasperated by the fact that i heard about it for YEARS and finally went some months back. since this is about steak, i will not talk about the service. but the steak was not tasty, very dry, and they nothing to put on it to make it better. neither me or my dining companion finished it, so we took the rest, the majority, with us, and someone else ate it at home. NOT my idea of a great meal.
thnks!

I can't speak for the Phila locaction but the KOP, PA location highly disappointed me. The service was horrible and the food did not wow me one bit. Moments after our apps came our entrees arrived. The waiter advised us he had no choice but to serve our entrees at this time. After we finished it took quite some time to have our tables bused. To be quite honest I've had better steaks at lower end franchises. I normally give the benefit of the doubt but it is to expensive to give it another shot. There were two other couples and we all shared the same experience.

Held my son's 23 birthday at Ruth Chris. Service was less than attentive-a could not be bother attitude. Dessert was awful. The birthday cake was a chunk of butter-not one diner had more than a bit. Lots of money for a good steak, poor service and a birthday cake that will be noted as the worst I have ever had.

Ruth's Chris is not a bad place, it is just very over rated and extremely overhyped. And, I MUST add, very OVERPRICED. Food was decent, but for the price I would rather go to the Capital Grille, The Prime Rib. They do is so much better.

I HAD VOICED MY OPINION TO THE MANAGER AFTER I HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE. THE PLACE IS NOT TERRIBLE BUT SERVICE IS. I ORDERED A BOTTLE OF WINE AND WITH OUT ME KNOWING THEY CHARGED ME FOR 5 GLASS OF WINE INSTEAD OF THE BOTTLE. AFTER I CALLED AND TALKED TO THE MANAGER HE WAS SINCERELY SORRY. THE GENTLEMAN TOOK MY INFORMATION AND SAID HE WOULD GET BACK TO ME AND NEVER DID. I HAVE EATEN AT EVERY STEAKHOUSE IN THE CITY AND HAD THE WORST EXPERIENCE AT RUTH CHRIS, FORGET RUTH CHRIS AND GO TO THE CAPTIAL GRILL, IT WAS THE BEST

A repeat customer and still not disappointed. The steaks are the best around and the portions are huge! It's a la carte, so if you have an appetizer or side dish, make sure you're going to share (ex. a hearts of lettuce salad was an entire quarter of a head!). Be prepared to wait, even if you have a reservation.
