After reading so many fabulous reviews and needing a new stylist, I decided to go see Richard. What a huge mistake!! I came in with nice hair but just wanted to clean it up a bit. I told him exactly what I wanted done and I ended up with something that was completely different from what I had asked for. At first I thought that maybe it was the way it was styled and I could go home and work with it myself but I was wrong. My husband said that it was the worst haircut that I had ever gotten. I'm beginning to think that all of those rave reviews were left by Richards mother, sisters and friends.

Are you kidding me? The prices are insanely high for what the salon has to offer. Have you seen the 'wedding room?' It is seriously a glorified closet! The staff itself is pretty friendly...until you meet Dean himself. Let's talk about over the top and hugely ridiculous. His style is that of someone who WANTS to appear they have taste, but lost touch with the current style years ago. His demeanor is fake and condescending, I mean where does he ever get his attitude? He works at a two bit salon in PITTSBURGH. Sorry honey I love this city, but it's no New York and Dean of Shadyside is nothing...NOTHING. Don't waste your time or money.

I was in town for a surgery for my husband and desperately needed some TLC and pampering. I looked up Dean on the internet, read some reviews and decided to go see Richard for color and a new cut. Richard's kindness, attentiveness and professionalism put me at ease and reassured me that I had made the right decision. He even understood and could almost read my mind when I tried to explain what type of hairstyle I was looking for. Every step of the color process was explained to me and I was given my formula to take back home with me to try to recreate the color in my hometown. Richard I was totally and completed pleased with my treatment from the moment I entered the salon till I walked out. I paid a high price for this "new look", but the experience was top drawer and I don't regret spending the money for one single minute. Thanks to everyone there who were sooo kind and attentive.

I am a young, female, professional, out of the country, travelling through Pittsburgh and I would like to share my overall very good impression of the Salon and the stylist I went to. Yes, it is probably a bit more pricy but it??s absolutely worth it!

The stylist I was referred to was Richard Sciulli and I was treated by him and the staff with utmost courtesy and competent behaviour. I have not met anyone else in this profession who spent such a lot of time to advise me on the general condition of my hair, hair care, style, maintaining the style and colour and last but not least, the products used were of high quality ingredients, no animal testing. Altogether, that shows care for the customer and care for the environment. Richard and his assistant were friendly and spirited, focussed on my wishes and again, offering recommendations whenever appropriate and welcomed.

During my visit, I was able to get a manicure and pedicure and that was also carried out with expedient and proficient attention.

I left the Salon three pampered hours later, feeling beautiful. That was four weeks ago and the cut and colour is still good. Thank you!

My sister and I were regulars at Deans. One of the employees that works there told me that some of the other employees make fun of us when we come in. One person in paticular said some really awful things. This obviously GAY man named RICHARD!!! My sister and I are of another culture and are highly offended. We will never ever come to this horrible cult like place again and will be sure to spread the word of our experience to anyone who will listen!!!

Richard is an all-round pro. He has the knowledge, skill and sense of style of a top-notch NYC stylist. I lived in NYC for 11 years and now in Miami for 4, and Richard's the only person I'll let cut my hair other than my stylist in NYC. He knows exactly what will look best on you, and he will give you a cut that grows in perfectly. He is also a pro colorist. SIMPLY SAID, HE IS SIMPLY FABULOUS.

One of my friends had the greatest cut and she always looked fantastic. I needed a change, I ask her where she went she said Dean had done her hair. She gave me a coupon from Dean's and I set out with her to Pittsburgh. We travel all the way from Wellsboro, Pa, 4 hrs away. It was a dream of a life time. Dean and his staff were wonderful. They took their time with me. I was in total amazement! The clients that came in, went out looking like they should be in Glamour. The services that they offer are 1st class. I can't believe all the great compliments I get now. You truly are World Class!! Darla from Wellsboro, PA

I have been going to this salon for nearly 3yrs. I have been very happy with the services I got from my stylist, Holly B. I received a letter stating she was no longer there, they would like to ease the trasition by offering discounted services with another recommended stylist. I dont want another stylist, I want HollyB. I even called to see if i could get information on her, although polite, they had nothing. no forwarding information...yeah right! They know where she is or what shes doing. I will not be returning to this salon. because of this, it is my choice to continue with the salon or with my stylist, I have been returning because of my stylist not the medicore salon.
Well, I did some investigating...I found her. And you can too. She now has a myspace account and she does that Silpada jewelry, mysilpada.com/holly.b or hbreckler22@yahoo.com or b.uwithhollyb@yahoo.com or she said you can call her 412 6572808. I look forward to continuing my hair relationship with her and Im sure you do too. Call her shes waiting!!!!

I used to go out of town to get my hair cut, but then a friend suggested Angela... Not only have I switched to having my cut in Pittsburgh, but I actually like my haircuts here *better* than in New York!! (not to mention they're not even *half* the price.) Take advantage of Pittsburgh while you can!!!! Get Angela to cut your hair!

I went in for a wedding party (thank god it wasn't *my* wedding) and was treated terribly. The hairdresser, obviously stressed due to wedding season, was rude and threw hair togethor with 2 bobby pins just to usher me along so she could get to as many wedding parties as possible. I can't account for the other stylists--maybe they are better but she was awful. She insulted the quality of my hair (i.e. Made me feel like crap..)Hello just style my hair, lady. I don't need to hair about how my hair doesn't fit your standards. She was also rude to other employees. It's very unsettling to get your hair done while someone is screaming at another person. I don't know her by name but she was overweight and had badly dyed reddish long reddish hair. DO NOT GET HER. I thought myhair looked like crap but didn't want to make the bride feel bad so I kept my mouth shut. Sure enough due to the lack of time and care spent on it, the "style" (if you can call it that) came undone by the end of the wedding and I looked like I had a mop on my head. All in all do not get that overweight/brow/red-haired woman to do your hair for ANY special event. She will put any stress she is feeling onto you ..which is funny since getting your hair done should be relaxing. BEWARE!!

Angela was recommended to me by a coworker and I would highly suggest anyone else looking for a fab new stylist check her out! She is very friendly and stylish (lets face it, I want my 'stylist' to have some style of their own)! Angela offers suggestions and consultations if you aren't sure what you're looking for and listens carefully to what you DO want. The salon itself is well kept and has a nice atmosphere. Highly recommended!

I just had my best ever experience at a salon! I was referred by a dear friend, to see a stylist "Richard" at Dean of Shadyside. Richard made me feel FABULOUS! I sat in his chair for my consultation, and told him to do whatever he felt would be right for me, I needed a change. For the first time in 25 years, a stylist actually showed his talent to me! Richard took time to cut my hair, style my hair and teach me how to make it look lovely! I enjoyed the entertainment and lively conversation we shared too! Richard, you are MARVELOUS! I look forward to seeing you in about 8 weeks!!! I LOVE IT!! Even my husband and teenage sons loved it!! I feel wonderful!! THANK YOU!!!

I was delighted with the hair specialist that took care of me. He exceeded. His name is Richard Sciulli. I have had several experiences with different hair stylist that you explain what you are lookiing for and because they have their own agenda...you are completing disappointment with the outcome and regret walking in. Richard, asked me what I was looking for, provided his opinion and completely satisfied me. It is a good feeling when you find a hair stylist that really listens to your needs. Thanks Richie

Unless you are a 50+ year old woman seeking to look like you're a spry 40, avoid this salon at all costs--the high cost (in dollars) of looking a lot older than you are. Each "stylist" is pretentious enough to have their own assistants, assistants who expect to be tipped for standing around gathering tips on how to give a horrendous haircut. While my "stylist" was butchering my hair, he babbled incessantly about all of the fabulous places he had worked and all of the "precision cutting" skills he had learned instead of letting me get a word in about how I wanted to look. When he wasn't talking about himself, he was asking his "assistant" about the next client. It seemed to me that my "stylist" was far more concerned about who was coming in next (also a 50+ year old woman) than 20-something me. I went in for a shaggy pixie cut -- I left looking like Prince Valiant. (see this Sunday's funny pages for visual reference) After crying about it, I went to JC Penney's salon in Robinson. Ask for Carol, she has experience fixing other stylists' mistakes

Dean of Shadyside is a little different than most upscale salons. It is reasonably large, but doesn't feel like it. The staff is friendly, and the service is excellent. I find the parking(metered parking) to be somewhat annoying and sometimes it is difficult to park near the salon. Overall, a very good salon. They carry the usual brand-name salon products, plus some other brands that I have not seen anywhere else.

I have to say i am shocked to hear such a negative comment about my new stylist. I visited the salon 2 weeks ago and was introduced to Jamie who blew me away. Not only did she give me a very good cut but she styled it perfectly. i ended up buying every product she recommended. She even showed me how to use the product and style my hair at home. I have been sending all my friends to see her and they love her just as much as i do. Shes not phony like many of my hairdressers in the past . She is a genuine, sweet person who does not deserve to be bashed on this site. She is still pretty new in the industry but she knows what shes doing. Besides her, the staff in general were very friendly as well. Im sorry dreamchaser had a bad experience with Jamie but i have never been happier with my hair.

well, i see i am not the only who is disgruntled with dean of shadyside. my story is no different than dpdancer and dreamchaser. i was not informed my guy had left. i was told i didn't have a relationship to him, but with the salon. that i would be with another stylist who was as good as robert- who turned out to be a butcher queen. i just found robert at spa uptown and he saved this mess on my head. i must agree with the two previous reviews, the spa is positively beautiful. i had the distinct pleasure of meeting the owner, geri, who was most welcoming. it was great to see miss skylar at the desk, oh yes, and that cute girl sherri- another familiar face from dean's. robert seemed quite happy and the staff were positively wonderful. my day at spa uptown was nothing short of ecstasy.

It's been 6 weeks since I've been at Dean, and you'd think that my animosity to the place and their practices have weakened, but honestly, they haven't. I didn't write a review right away, because I was too mad--I didn't want to be unreasonable. I wanted to think clearly about this. I had been with an exquisite hairdresser, Robbert, for several months and just as dpdancer, was informed at my appointment that he was no longer with Dean, etc. Just read her review. The same thing happened to me. Honestly, that day, I felt like someone had just punched me in the gut. I was horrified, but in need of a haircut, so I felt like I had no choice. The following is a letter to the owner, Dean: "Dean, I hate to tell you this, but my relationship is not with some pretentious salon; it is with the person who is actually making me look fabulous without fearing for my life in the chair. I'll never come back; I am attached at the hip to my hairdresser who is still practicing and much happier now. You will lose customers left and right because of dubious business practices and because your hubris (being out of touch with reality on account of arrogance, the number 1 deadly sin) won't allow your customers their voice to be heard. After all, you know better than all of us mere mortals who want to look good and feel good in our own skin. When I came in 6 weeks ago, Jamie (who by the way is just out of beauty school or she would have started doing hair when she was 8 if you expect people to believe that she has 15 years experience under her belt), gave me a Marine boot camp hair cut, which I didn't ask for. Not only that, she cut holes into my hair (as a former Marine wife of 10 years I know for a fact that I would never have been allowed in the barracks on account of unprofessional looking hair; any barber would have done better for 10 bucks) The color was the worst I had ever gotten (all brassy, which I try to avoid or I'd do it myself for much less), and I was in tears. You saw me; Richard (that overgrown buffoon who believes that his gay lifestyle--and I'm not a homophobe, some of my best friends are gay--gives him the right to yell on the floor at customers and has his customers flee with tears in their eyes--after all, all women are just hysterical, emotional humans in the mere presence of the God of Hair--other words come to my mind!!!) saw me--and you didn't come to fix it or help Jamie, who was overwhelmed by my tears. I teach 100 students each semester, and I pay attention to every one of them. As manager and owner, it's your job to teach and help your stylists, and you cannot tell me that you have no time to do so. If you don't have that time or the willingness you're in the wrong business. I paid 80 dollars for hair that I was in tears about for weeks; I didn't even want to go out and be seen with it. The worst compliment for a hairdresser is when a customer wears a baseball cap for weeks, because they cannot show their hair. I did that. I have many pieces of advice for you to save your business, but I would actually have to charge for all that common sense advice), so if you'd like to know, go through your client data and call me." So, here comes my advice: To all the well deserving ladies of Pittsburgh who work hard for their money and need to look their best, don't waste your money on a name and all the pretentiousness it entails; look for spas uptown across from Mellon Arena to get really great hair at a great price with friendly service you can rely on. Don't buy into lies or deal with people who will take your money for "outsourcing" color application and blow drying to assistants while charging for top notch service, so that the book can be filled to the brim and people can feel great about yelling at you, because your opinion does not matter and you of all people, don't know how you look your best. Trust your looks to the ones who care and know that return customers come from being satisfied with what you got.

I did that. I have many pieces of advice for you to save your business, but I would actually have to charge for all that common sense advice), so if you'd like to know, go through your client data and call me." Pros: NONE

Cons: EVERYTHING, but especially unprofessional management!

There is nothing worse than to show up to a hair appointment only to find out your stylist has left the salon. This happened to me. I have been going to a wonderful hair stylist named Robert for about eight months now. When I went in for my last appointment, I was told he is no longer working there and that he no longer was doing hair. The 'punker' girl said he quit doing hair to play in a band. I asked why I was not informed of this via a phone call or email. She rolled her eyes and with a smirk, she said that was not the policy of the salon. When I insisted on speaking with a manager, I was refused- He was too busy to talk with me. He did tell the girl that I should have no problem going to another stylist because I did not have a relationship with Robert, but with the salon. What in the hell? You have got to be kidding me! I have no relationship to this salon, but most definitely had a relationship with my stylist. I still can not believe this was said to me! She recommended another stylist who supposedly had 15 years experience. This girl was not more than 20 - 25 years old. I guess she was 10 when she went to beauty school?! I refused and left. What to do? What to do? I started searching on Google to find Robert and lo and behold, there he was... At Spa Uptown. So he really didn't leave the hair industry- he just left that place. I cannot believe that a salon would outright lie to a client like that. Shame on Dean of Shadyside!!!

So I have been getting my hair cut and colored by the same lady for years. I decided I wanted something new and exciting and I wanted someone with fresh ideas. I read some reviews and decided to give Richard a try at Dean of Shadyside. I get there, and the hostess was very friendly. I liked most that everyone gets to wear what they want, so you can see each of their personalities. They wear what they want, but it doesn't take away from the atmosphere. It's professional. I sit down next to Richard who was already styling someones hair at the time. I waited, MAYBE 10 minutes, no big deal. Then when the lady leaves, he sat next to me and we just started talking about what I was looking for. Let me tell you, that man knows EXACTLY what he's talking about. He actually taught me the difference between depth and tone when choosing color for your hair. I am blonde, and I've been getting the "bleached" highlights for years. I told him I wanted something a little softer, but still blonde. We talked for a while. Not feeling rushed. I felt like I should. I felt like I was the only one there. So he tells one of the other girls what colors to mix for me. He gave me 3 different colors. I know that may sound drastic, but they are all just a few different shades of blonde. VERY natural. Then we discussed cut. I have long hair, and I wanted something new. So we cut it short. Chin length, but it's short. He gave me a few bangs to complement my face shape. I'm serious when I say this, I have NEVER left a salon feeling more beautiful than I do today. My hair is bouncy and natural, and when I look in the mirror, it's exactly what it should be. It fits me. ANd he knew what to do, because he sat down and got to know a little about me first, so he knew what I wanted. They work together here. One girl would hold the foil, while Richard worked his magic. Not only was it awesome to see such great team work, it felt amazing to have 2 different people caring about your experience vs. only one. Everyone is happy to help everyone. I changed my hair stylist today. I went to the same lady for almost 10 years, and I will spend the next however many God willing... with Richard. I will recommend him to everyone. Hair isn't just about the cut and color... it's about fashion. He does exactly what you want, but I trust him now only after meeting with him one time. I would never question the newest and latest. He knows exactly what's up in the industry. Richard was born to design your hair. I know that sounds corny, but he is really very impressive.

Thanks Richard. I feel beautiful.

I was a regular customer at Deans 10 years ago- until my stylist left. I now drive 50 miles for a stylist that I really like.
Haven't been back and couldn't really figure out why I hadn't tried another stylist there in all these years. I am getting weary of the commute and decided to see if I could find someone closer to home.
Walked in the other day and remembered ...instantly.
Front desk staff is rude. Extremely rude.
No eye contact- "Can I help you?" as if I'm standing there annoying her. Name tag said 'Stephanie'- think I actually remember her from 10 years ago- only heavier and more rude. When I left the story was the same. Handed me change without making eye contact ...and said nothing. Why would I expect a "good-bye", "thank you", "have a nice day" ...or a smile.? Guess that would be expecting too much.
Elena was wonderful- no complaints. Great haircut and she was friendly. Would love to be able to say that I've found a new stylist...but, alas I won't return for Elena because of the general feel of the salon.
It's not all that girls ! Get over yourselves. The place is clean, but in need of updating. Someone needs to really take a look aroound at the walls, windows, etc.
And do a huge SWEEP of the staff. There are a whole lot of personable people out there. Poor Dean is losing me ...and who knows how many others to poor customer service. He needs to hire a 'Secret Shopper' to give him a real account of what goes on in the salon when he's not around. It's clearly not the only game in town. Customer service should be #2 only to the quality of stylists hired there.
Sadly, guess I'll keep on looking for the perfect stylist...but I won't be stopping at Deans.

I have gone to Dean's for years and honestly, my last visit was the worst experience I have ever had! Granted, my hair turned out great and Stephanie was perfect as usual, but beyond that, Deans has gone downhill fast.

First off, the Manager was yelling and singing at such a high level, my stylist and I could not even hear eachother. When asked to turn it down a bit, the manager confronted me and asked me inappropirate questions. He made an internal issue a public issue that should not involve the client. Very bad taste.

What is up with the receptionists and other stylists coming up to customers pushing other services on them? I mean seriously, I am there to get my hair done and enjoy my experience... not be hassled to purchase more services. If I wanted to get a pedicure in the first place, I would have scheduled an appointment... I didn't so leave me alone.

Last but not least, what is up with the name tags? Am I at Fantastic Sams or Denny's???They are big and black and makes the place look lowclass. TACKY!!!

I recently had the distinct pleasure of having my hair done by someone who doesn't do "Pittsburgh Hair." You see, I moved here from Washington D.C. and was shopping in Shadyside when I met an English woman who recommended the salon and more importantly, Robbert. Getting an appointment with him was more than difficult though. When I called for my appointment, the receptionist repeatedly told me he was booked and that she could put me with another stylist who she said is a color professional. I explained to her that I wanted a cut- Not a dye job. After some dispute, she found he had an opening the next day. When I arrived at the salon, I was greeted by Skylar, who made me feel very welcomed. She hung up my coat and got me a robe. While waiting for Robert, the owner of the salon welcomed me as well. Then the manager introduced himself. It was like a full-on welcoming committee. When Robert came out to meet me, he was all smiles and I instantly felt a connection. We walked back to his chair and he began to talk to me as if I were an old friend. I was immediately at ease and knew I could trust him. We talked about my concerns, needs, facial shape and what I was looking for. We went back to get me shampooed and- WOW! This guy knows how to give a great shampoo!!! We went back to his chair and began the cut. I was amazed at his movement and grace. This guy wielded his scissors like a painter with a brush. When he styled the cut he explained it every step of the way. It was simple and he even told me some tricks of the trade. The next day, I was able to recreate my style almost exactly like he did. Robert is a ray of sunshine in this gloomy city. I HIGHLY recommend this guy and ladies, he is really cute too!

My first visit was when I decided I was going to donate my hair to Locks of Love. I was able to get a walk-in appointment on a Saturday and was referred to Angela. I had never chopped all my hair off before and was nervous. She was EXCELLENT! She explained everything that she was going to do and how she thought to cut it. I also have curly hair so cutting it short can be a very scary thing. I have to say she gave me the best hair cut I have ever had. It is the one I always wanted and didn't know it. I have continued to go to Angela and she always makes sure I'm happy with the cut, and listens if there are any changes. She also makes awesome color recommendations! She is so nice and professional I would recommend her to anyone. I have moved and am sad that I had to leave her. There isn't much I miss about Pittsburgh but one thing is going here to get my hair cut and colored. Thanks Angela!!

Dean of Shadyside is by far one of the most unique and professional salons I ever experienced. I am a mwm and like my hair cut very short. Rather than using clippers like most of the salons in the area, the stylists use shears. Their training is ongoin and techniques are custom to each guest. Its an experience that I truly enjoy and keep coming back for more!

Such a pleasurable experience! Everyone one from Jason at the front desk, to Katherine the stylist's assistant, to Richard the stylist were sweet, attentive, and professional! I came in there with a curly mess of long hair that hadn't been attended to in 9 months, and I left with hair worthy of an Herbal Essence commercial. I couldn't have asked for better service, a better style, or a better stylist!

I recently moved to Pittsburgh and have been seeking a hair salon. I will preface this by saying that I am a woman in my thirties with several children. I am very active in gay and lesbian rights. I read an excellent review of a gay-owned salon in 'Out' magazine a while back, but forgot the name of the salon. I have been searching the net this evening to find the salon owned by the gay business man featured in "Out" when I came across the review of "Dean's Salon" by Karen. Karen apparently was put off by a confident and proud gay man and therefore fervently does not recommend this individual or the salon called 'Dean's'. I was so repulsed by Karen's homophobia that I am now going to go to Dean's simply because if someone as obviously outdated as Karen is put off by their services, I am certain I will be thrilled with their work! I can only imagine the dreadful style that 'Dean's Salon' saved Karen from inflicting on herself. I say kudos to the out and proud gay man (Richard) who had to put up with homophobic-attention starved-Karen for an hour. Karen, if you have a problem with homosexuals, perhaps you should avoid any of the city's cultural districts and stop looking at art or enjoying film while you are at it. The gay and lesbian community enriches our lives more than most of us realize, I have a gay son and I just hope that one day my son has the courage to be out and proud like the gentleman that gave you an hour of his time at 'Dean's'. I will most definitely be calling for an appointment right away!

A girl friend of mine recently began going to this salon and gave me a card for a free hair cut with the person she has been seeing. So I call and make my appointment with this Richard fellow. I show up 15 minutes prior to my appointment, where I am greeted kindly by the front desk staff, and asked to fill out some paper work. No problem. I'm greeted by what appeared to be other staff members, who inquired as to whether they could offer me a beverage, very polite. No problem. I then proceed to wait another 45 minutes in the waiting room,...basically this guy is 30 minutes late for my appointment. I'm then ushered to Richard where he speaks to me as a 4 year old girl and refuses to let me talk to him about my hair until I'm shampooed. Finally when I get back to his chair, he is working on someone in the next chair, completely ignoring me. He does this for another 15 minutes. Finally when he starts talking to me about me hair, I tell him what I want, and he begins telling me how it's not good for me, and begins telling me what he wants to do. Whoa,...I'm paying, do what I ask. I understand he should have his opinion, but he was way too forceful. I painfully allowed him his way. Then for the next 30 minutes he talked about how great he was and how proud he is to be gay. NEVER NEVER GO TO THAT MAN!

I was in PGH on vacation and decided to get my hair cut and colored. I was a bit apprehensive because I have ethnic hair..but decided to go for it since i was in a big city. Angela was fantastic. She explained everything she was going to do and explained what would/ would not work with my color and texture. She was proffessional and friendly and recommended the Pureology line (which is organic, smells great, and makes my hair silky and smooth, not to mention is anti-fade which is perfect to maintain my color). I have never had highlights that were the absolute perfect "caramel" tone until she did them...the blowout and her flatiron technique made my hair straight, smooth, and glossy. Recommend her to anyone. I will travel to Pittsburgh every 3 months just so she can do my hair, I will never go to anyone else ever if I can help it!

Cons: bit pricey, but worth it

If you have been searching your whole life for a hair stylist -- no, hair ARTIST is more accurate -- call Dean of Shadyside and make an appointment with Richard. Richard doesn't just look at your hair; he looks at your whole person: lifestyle, personality, time constraints, style of dressing -- even your makeup, then creates a cut, style and color that works to your best advantage. I always feel like a goddess when I emerge from a "Richard Session" and have never been disappointed. Highly highly highly recommend.

Note for new clients: there is free parking behind the building. The receptionist did not inform me about this wonderful perk when I made my first appointment, so I want to promote it.

All I have to say is the prices are outrageous. They advertise to be a high end salon, and then you go there and there are beauty school people attending to your hair. I'm sorry but for the prices they charge I want the stylist who I made the appointment with to do my hair, this includes mixing the color and applying it. It also includes blowdrying. At those prices I am not paying to be a guinea pig for a beauty school employee. I understand that people have to learn, however the salon should offer their services at discounted prices, and the customer should have a choice or not weather the beauty school stylist works on thir hair.

I have long long hair and I like to keep it that way. However, Its difficult to maintain long hair and yet have it looking styled. I am petrified of walking into a salon, discussing the importance of maintaining the lenght of my hair with the stylist and ending up with what I consider as short hair.

So when I first tried Dean of Shadyside I was sitting at the edge of my seat, explaining to my stylist Jessica that I need a new style that has me feeling and looking different without compromizing the lenght. As difficult a task as it may seem Jessica did just that for my hair. She gave me a Fabulous hair cut and the lenght was maintained. And it was probably the best haircut Ive had. Needless to say, Im a regular now and I always get great advice on how to style my hair . I recomended the place to several of my friends and they all have become regulars now. The service is very professional and the experience is well worth the money spent. Brilliant I say!

I've been going to Dean of Shadyside for a few years now, and I love them. The cuts are incredible and while they maybe expensive by some pittsburgh standards, I think they are quite affordable. And the cut that you'll get here is worth the price. The stylists are great at offering advice about styles that suit your face and your lifestyle; they don't push products down your throat; they are always 100% unpretentious. I've also been to Dean for manicures, and for whatever reason the polish seems to last much longer than at other places I've been (maybe the heat lamps? maybe the quality of polish?). Everyone is always polite, and I genuinely feel good about myself every time I leave there.

I was (key word - was) a customer of Dean of Shadyside Salon in Wexford for almost two years. On one occasion, I went to a regularly scheduled appointment - only to find out my current stylist had quit several weeks earlier. No one from the salon ever called me - and I was just placed with someone else. Okay - no problem - liked the new stylist and all turned out well. However - the next appointment I had with him - very early on a Saturday morning- which I fit into an extremely packed schedule (on a night I was going to a big event - right before leaving on vacation - when a family member of mine was in the hospital for an extended amount of time) was cancelled - get this - one half hour prior to my appointment. I was already on the road on my way to the salon - and I asked why they were cancelling my appointment. I was told my stylist called off sick - to which I replied - "Okay, things happen - can you please fit me in with someone else - because I have a lot going on right now, a big event tonight and this is the only day I have to come in....." The girl on the other end of the phone said - "Nope - sorry - all stylists are booked - call again when you can make time to come in". That was it - no checking with the stylists, no offers for help - no future discounts - nothing.

Needless to say - I found another salon, who took me right away as a walk-in that morning - did a great job with my hair- and charged me half the amount. My crisis was averted - but I will NOT be returning to Dean of Shadyside in Wexford. Customer service skills there are severely lacking and - so much for being a two-year customer. I know if I treated people that way where I work - my company would be in danger of going out of business. Some consideration for my situation would have been nice, and at the very least, professional.

I really feel sorry for the front desk girls. they are rude, but the fact remains that it is a circus in there and for that maybe i can understand. the whole salon is run terrible, theres no order in the ENTIRE salon. i had a 2 pm appointment on a tuesday and they were so behind. i ended up being taken back to get shamoo'd after 3pm! all though, thats not the worst of it. i ended up sitting with a wet head for 30 minutes after the wash! i 86'd the color cause i did not want to move in there, so i figured a trim was best. i expressed that i was mildly upset with the wait, but the hair dresser couldnt of cared less! no tip for you! might want to think about being a tiny bit more sympathetic before you lose your tip dumb@$$. but its their living not mine, thank god! guess they live off ramon noodles! i hope SOMEONE in the salon reads this and realizes they charge way too much for the services they provide. they think just cause they in uppidy shadyside, they can be snobs and over charge for services. ITS A BUSINESS, no matter where the location is. it makes you wonder if "DEAN" evens pays these people, maybe thats why they dont care. PAY UP DEAN....YOU STAFF OBVIOUSLY NEEDS IT!

Pros: they take walk ins, and were able to schedule my appointment fast, they are in a great area, later hours

Cons: price for service and products, attitudes, waiting, waiting, waiting.

I went here a couple of times and Richard did a great job with my color. The problem is the first time I went they got color on my shirt (I even had on a robe). I pointed it out to them and they didn't even offer to have it drycleaned. They also let me walk out of there with color on my forehead and cheek. I scheduled my appointment so far in advance that I forgot to write it down. No one ever called me to remind me of the appointement. They finally called me an hour after the appointment was scheduled asking me if I was coming. When I said no one called to remind me, she said that their receptionist marked it that she did call which was a total lie. Again, I feel a bit bad writing this because Richard was great with the color (the style was ok) , but the other stuff is not worth it.

I have been going to Dean of Shadyside since moving to Pittsburgh 2 1/2 years ago, and I've never been disappointed. Holly B. has been a great stylist and colorist- I have been a blonde, a brunette, and even a redhead and each color has been natural and flattering. Holly (and the rest of the staff) are eager to listen to what I need and are friendly and attentive. I highly recommend this salon!!!

Ken is amazing. Hands down most in depth consulation ever. His assistant did her job (spent 10 minutes washing and conditioning my hair, without commenting on her opinion of what he should do. She also didn't badmouth other people), he spent 20 minutes feeling my long curly hair that I wear straight, and determing the best path to undo that hack job someone back home did. I was early for my appointment, and got right in. The friendly staff hung up my coat, and put a robe on me. All in all, everyone was very friendly. The only con was the price, for shoulder blade length hair (Ken is a level III) it was $40 for the cut, you add in $10 tip...I think that is a lot, compared to other salons. HOWEVER, that being said, save your pennies ladies, very worth it. I am in law school, and I would rather eat Ramen for a week and have great hair, then sacrifice it for a $25 job at supercuts.

WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!!!! I WAITED OVER 2 HOURS TO GET IN, EVEN THOUGH I HAD AN APPOINTMENT, THE STAFF WAS RUDE AND SNOBBY, AND I ENDED UP WITH THE UGLIEST HAIR. THE STYLIST, IF YOU WANT TO CALL HER THAT, DYED MY HAIR BLACK AND RED AND CLAIMED THAT IT WAS REALLY DARK BROWN. I DIDN'T EVEN LET PUT SCISSORS TO MY HAIR AFTER THAT HORRIBLE DYE JOB. I ENDED UP LEAVING LOOKING LIKE A DROWNED WITCH. OH AND SHE EXPECTED ME TO PAY. HA!

I am moving out of the Pittsburgh area and am very sad to be leaving this wonderful salon, so I decided to write a review and share the love. I have been going to this salon for about 2 years and it is great. They have every service you can imagine, even a spa, and the prices are reasonable for a professional salon (especially for the exceptional service you recieve). Richard is my stylist and he is amazing. You can tell that he is not only passionate about what he does, but that he is also an expert. After giving me a 20 minute consultation where he learned about my hair history and questioned me about what i was looking for, he gave me the best haircut I could possibly imagine. I will probably try to schedule my hair appointments for when I am back visiting Pittsburgh; I am afraid I won't find anyone as good! I have had friends go to other stylists, and they have done a great job too. Definitely recommended!

THIS SALON IS HORRIBLE, THE RECPETIONISTS ARE NASTY AND RUDE AS WELL AS CARRY A FUNNY SMELL THAT IS VERY OFFENSIVE! THE JOB THAT WAS DONE ON MY HAIR LOOKS LIKE A FIVE YEAR OLD DID IT, I WILL NOT MENTION WHICH STYLIST DID THIS OF COURSE, BUT I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND ANYONE GO TO THIS PLACE. AND LETS NOT FORGET THAT THE PRICES ARE OUTRAGIOUS, AND FOR WHAT?

I have been getting my hair highlighted for years from different stylists, but Ken has done the best job hands down. My color is blended and natural looking, compliments my skin tone, and healthier than ever.I never look like I painted on stripes like many of the women I see. He is always open to suggestions, clear on what he's going to do, and matches my expectations with realistic solutions. I have thick hair and it takes extra time, but I never feel like he's rushing(although I would schedule during the week if you want extra attention-weekends at the salon are VERY busy). He also lets me quietly read while he's working, which I very much appreciate.
Worth the price every time.

I have gotten my hair cut there many times and have loved the results. The staff always listens to what you want and then adds their own input for a great style. I have also had my hair done for events in the salon and have felt pampered every time. The only thing that I don't like is that the staff (not hairstylists, but receptionist, etc.) is always very snotty. But get past that! It's worth it.
